take-off and landing.
If you’re planning a trip, you should also factor in extra time

AED Helps Save Life of Loyola Blakefield (Md.) Lacrosse Player
AED Helps Save Life of Loyola Blakefield (Md.) Lacrosse Player
Mon Apr 19 2021 | Paul Ohanian | High School
To enhance player safety, US Lacrosse has long advocated for the presence of an automated external defibrillator (AED) at all lacrosse practices and games. Fortunately, an AED was on-site at last Friday’s high school game in Baltimore between Loyola Blakefield and McDonogh.
Late in the first quarter of the game, Loyola Blakefield’s Peter Laake, a freshman defenseman, was struck in the chest with a shot. He collapsed on the field and immediately received medical attention.
In addition to Loyola Blakefield’s training staff, two doctors came from the stands to assist with administering an AED on the field. A Baltimore County medical team arrived shortly thereafter to render further emergency care, and to transport Laake by ambulance to an area hospital.
After being kept for observation, Laake has now been released from the hospital and is doing well.
“Commotio cordis was the injury,” Loyola athletic trainer Jeremy Parr confirmed to The Baltimore Sun, which chronicled the incident. “He is alert, conscious and in good spirits.”
What an incredible moment earlier today. Pete Laake has made his return to Blakefield.

Categorized as a disruption of the heart’s rhythm, commotio cordis is a rare but potentially catastrophic phenomenon that results in sudden cardiac arrest. It occurs as a result of blow to the area of the chest directly over the heart during a precise moment in the heart’s cycle. The only effective response to commotio cordis is the timely delivery of a life-saving shock or defibrillation.
The good news, in addition to Laake’s recovery, is that new chest protection is now available that can prevent commotio cordis before it happens. The enhanced equipment for men’s and women’s game goalies and for boys’ and men’s field players is the result of years of research and development. US Lacrosse has worked with manufacturers and medical experts to bring this new equipment, which meets NOCSAE performance standard ND200, to the lacrosse community.
“We’re all extremely thankful to hear that Peter is doing well and that he received the immediate medical attention that was so critical in leading to a positive outcome,” said Rick Lake, men’s lacrosse director at US Lacrosse.
Lake also cited the importance of the new chest protection equipment.
“Unfortunately, there’s still not an AED on every field, which further highlights the importance of the new chest protection equipment that meets the NOCSAE standard,” Lake said. “That equipment is designed to stop this type of injury from happening, so we certainly encourage all players to begin wearing them as soon as possible.”
Beginning in 2021, the use of goalie chest protectors that meet the new NOCSAE performance standard became mandatory in the US Lacrosse boys’ and girls’ youth rules, the NFHS boys’ and girls’ high school rules, and the NCAA men’s and women’s rules.
Beginning in 2022, US Lacrosse boys’ field players, NFHS boys’ field players, and NCAA men’s field players must also wear chest protection that meets the NOCSAE ND200 standard. Many manufacturers have already begun producing those products, which must contain the NOCSAE logo and be certified by the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) in order to be legal for play.
Consumers are encouraged to check the SEI website (www.seinet.org/search.htm) under Program: Chest Protectors (Lacrosse) to verify that a specific brand is listed as approved.
“The use of chest protection that meets the performance standard makes lacrosse safer,” said Dr. Mark Link, a member of the US Lacrosse Sports Science and Safety Committee and worldwide authority on commotio cordis.
US Lacrosse also works with The Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation to raise awareness among schools and other organizations about the importance of having automated external defibrillators. In 2000, 14-year-old Louis Acompora, a freshman lacrosse goalie for Northport High School in New York, died from commotio cordis after making a routine save in a game.
90,000 Baltimore suffered from RobbinHood
ransomware attack
In early May, the administration of the American city of Baltimore faced ransomware that infected a number of municipal computers. Some of the city services were completely paralyzed. Soon, a message appeared on the city’s website stating that you can only contact the authorities by phone. The culprit is a ransomware program called RobbinHood.
The Baltimore authorities did not disclose the details of the incident, however, according to The New York Times, the attackers used the sensational exploit EternalBlue.Despite the fact that the IT specialists of the mayor’s office promptly took measures (including shutting down all computers and servers to stop the spread of the ransomware), the malware managed to disable about 10,000 devices. The extortionists demand 13 bitcoins to restore the city services to work (about $ 114,000 at the time of publication).
Ransomware against municipalities
Baltimore is far from the first and, most likely, not the last city to suffer from ransomware. Last year, a ransomware attack forced Atlanta administration officials to return to pens and paper for several days.Offline were not only the mayor’s office, but also the local police, who had to hand-write the crime reports. The attackers asked the city for more than $ 50,000, but never received the ransom.
At the end of 2017, the Mecklenburg County in North Carolina became a victim of ransomware – one of the government officials opened a malicious attachment from an incoming letter. As a result, tax and prison services, the child support agency and many other institutions were affected. It took almost a month to restore the damaged systems.
What does the infection of municipal computers lead to
It is impossible to predict the scale of the disaster in advance. A modern person most often does not think about how much extra trouble municipal information systems take on. So when computers fail, urban dwellers are deprived of many of the usual amenities, which causes a wave of public discontent.
Due to the failed services, residents are forced to postpone important affairs for an indefinite time and contact government departments personally on issues that they are used to solving in a couple of clicks from home.
In particular, in Baltimore they write about such problems:
- The opportunity to submit an appeal to the mayor’s office has disappeared, since officials have lost access to e-mail.
- Real estate sales transactions were suspended (about 1.5 thousand).
- The possibility of online payment of fines for incorrect parking and traffic violations was lost, which led to a violation of the payment deadlines.
- The databases of the system of payment of utilities and taxes on real estate were damaged. As a result, it turned out to be impossible to write and pay bills, as well as to receive a receipt on the absence of debts from persons selling houses and apartments.
The Baltimore administration made a decision not to pay the ransom – from our point of view, absolutely correct. As we have written many times, paying the ransom is sponsoring ransomware with no guarantees of data recovery. By the way, in Atlanta and Mecklenburg County the demands of the ransomware were also ignored.
How to avoid falling victim to ransomware?
- Keep your software up to date, primarily your operating systems. Most of the exploits used by the authors of the ransomware Trojans are written for vulnerabilities that have been fixed long ago. Therefore, it is users of outdated programs that most often become victims of cyber attacks.
- Protect your system from ransomware with a dedicated security solution. For example, Kaspersky Anti-Ransomware Tool. This utility blocks attempts to encrypt user data. Firstly, it is completely free to download, and secondly, it is compatible with third-party security solutions.
- Train employees to recognize and defend against social engineering techniques used by attackers. People are often the very weak point through which attackers enter your infrastructure. We offer a range of programs to help raise information security awareness. They are designed to give people practical skills in countering intruders, rather than just listening to lectures for show.
Among other things, we have a version of the interactive training Kaspersky Interactive Protection Simulation, designed specifically for local administrations. It was created as part of the COMPACT project created by the European Commission, but is suitable for training public administrations around the world. You can find out a little more about him in this article.

Hellboymedia # 17: Baltimore – The Cult of the Red King
It’s time to take a break from the big and global events of Hellboyvers and discuss the big and global events of Baltimore. Due to the long pauses between mini-episodes, we haven’t talked about Lord Henry for a long time. Eight months already. The series The Cult of the Red King (Baltimore: The Cult of the Red King # 1-5) , which ended in September, promised to satisfy hunger and provide a lot of food for thought. And she kept her promise.
In order to pay due attention to a rare guest in our section, we even had to get the master of comic criticism Alexey Zamsky from the dungeon. Oh yeah, spoiler. We didn’t really like the episode. So no niceties this time. Go.
Stanislav Shargorodsky : Lyosha, last time we both agreed that The Wolf and the Apostle and The Witch of Harju were just a seed in the context of the second cycle of Baltimore.Tell us, what were your expectations from such an ambitious storyline as The Cult of the Red King ? Or don’t you really like to look ahead?
Alexey Zamsky : I belong to the category of people who pay attention to advertising only if they have not yet made a decision – say, read / not read. Therefore, for example, I did not see any trailer for “Age of Ultron” before the premiere. Likewise, prior to the release of The Cult, I knew only about its name and what the covers looked like.I did not read any previews or press releases, because the issue was already resolved.
And from that “underinformed” perspective, The Cult of the Red King didn’t seem like such a plot twist. After Baltimore turned from the Stalwart Tin Soldier to Roland’s Gunslinger, nothing particularly important had happened. A new “era” began in the series, but all that Mignola and Golden managed in this era was to remind us of the old satellites of Baltimore and introduce new ones. It was very unlikely that for the new five numbers Mignola planned to arrange a global cataclysm or to confront Lord Baltimore with the Red King – after all, such volleys had to be carefully charged, and this had not happened yet.So I was waiting, in general, for a new chapter in the wanderings of Baltimore. As cold, poetic and refined as the previous ones. But I didn’t get exactly what I expected.
Stanislav : Due to my greater awareness, I expected a lot from the plot. First, a full-fledged start of a new cycle. The previous two arcs were the prologue and epilogue, respectively, and starting from that, the reader could already demand from the author’s team changes and the outline of a new structure due to a change in subgenre.Secondly, I wanted to evaluate what the advances on working with the characters, issued just for the previous two plots, resulted in. Until now, the entire new gang of Baltimore was outlined only by general features (with rare exceptions), here such a trick could no longer pass. Moreover, when Mike and Christopher immediately outlined the rule that Henry’s companions do not live long. Therefore, time for “acquaintance” is criminally short. The third point, which was intriguing, stemmed from the title – we finally switched to the Red King and are now ready to dig our teeth into his history and legend.I was looking forward to immersion in mythology. And, like you, I didn’t get quite what I hoped for.
Alexei : You predicted last time that the new comics about Baltimore would be “team comics”, or at least deeply explore the relationship between Baltimore and the people around him. In general terms, your prediction came true – we do spend a lot of time with the hero’s companions, and their views of the world and their leader take up most of the time that is not spent in fights and research. But is this “character study” really so valuable in and of itself? Of course, it was necessary to shift the focus from Henry – on the one hand, he is good because he is impenetrable and mysterious, and on the other hand, he is in fact a simple monomaniac, and you cannot dig deep into his psychology.
Alas, the shift in focus made me remember the sad fact – the characters surrounding Baltimore, if they are not exotic (like Harish), can only serve as reflections (here I really want to use the word “foil” that has no Russian analogue). Each of them – especially the new ones, Sofia and Rigo clearly loved by Golden – are intended to emphasize how Henry differs from everyone else, and what at the same time has in common between him and his companion. Rigo – “Baltimore with faith”, Sophia – “Baltimore without army experience” (here I am simplifying, yes), Hodge – as it were his complete opposite, and so on. There is practically nothing to increase the volume there – the two-dimensional character will remain so. Worse, Golden writes such lines for some of them that the second dimension disappears from the heroes.Rigo on the ship speaks the standard set of priest’s phrases from genre prose. Kidd and Rose don’t do anything to move them beyond the “standard character number twenty-six.”
Stanislav : I agree. This is my first “not quite what I expected”. Mike and Chris at the end of the last cycle / the beginning of this one were stumped. They saturate Baltimore’s escort team too much, and they did it very inconsistently. Instead of each satellite being properly represented in turn, a whole bunch of them were dumped at one point. There is Hodge, with whom we are very familiar. There are three from the book that Golden didn’t really bother to reveal, but we could potentially know these characters from the novel. There are also a couple of characters out of nowhere (Harrish da Kidd). And there are two heroes to whom they have dedicated a whole arch (Sofia and Rigo). Those. at the beginning of this plot, out of eight characters, only three were more or less revealed. Add to this the idea that Henry’s allies do not last long, and the authors find themselves in a quandary – they are forced to speed up acquaintance with the heroes. As a result, this translates into regular attracted duets in a variety of combinations. Each, within the framework of his mission, had to communicate with everyone. Sometimes it comes to the point of absurdity, as in the scene in which it was found out with whom Sofia communicates excessively “close”.
But that’s all right. The real disaster was Childress, who was drained in the most shameful way. First, they outlined his important function of Henry’s last connection with himself in the past, and then they let him along the path of the “seduced man”, immediately turning away the readers. It all ended with an incredibly ridiculous death when, in a fit of rage, he rushed at the burning witch. With bare hands, no weapons. What was he thinking, and what was Golden thinking? Now I immediately run to the end, but it was the death of the companions that became the arch’s weakest point. Firstly, it does not cause any emotional feedback, because you didn’t really recognize the heroes. And secondly, these deaths are kind of meaningless. Death for the sake of death. That the voiced Childress (yes, the last thread is broken, but this is a stupid and far-fetched decision that has nothing to do with the development of the character), that the sacrifice of Aichros (heroic, but also not obligatory), that the completely excessive death of Hodge, which completely depreciates previous death, and the whole line with Carthage. The stakes are high, this is all clear, but you need to know when to stop.
At the same time, I really liked how the authors forced “suspense” around each satellite. Until the last release, it was unclear which character would not survive the story. It was intriguing and made reading unpredictable. The only pity is that this line could not be closed just as skillfully – as a result, those who were obvious candidates died.
Alexey : Yes. If they showed me this limited edition with torn covers and said that the series had changed writers, I would believe it.In general, there are many simplifications, which usually do not paint the inventive and brilliant Mignolu – starting with the “Russian hat” and ending with black flying ghosts. But the roughest corner cuts come with the characters. After all, it’s not even bad that Childress was senselessly killed – it’s bad that it was done from scratch. Let’s close our eyes to the fact that the line with the seductive witch turned out to be humiliating for both women and men. Let’s better see that it is staged by the authors like a piano in the bushes. On the ship with Baltimore, his trusted people, sailors and … a lonely unknown woman are sailing. Which Lord Henry ignores until the critical moment. At the same time, there is not a single moment in the plot for which Childress is necessary, his clouding of consciousness or his death.
If not for the death of Hodge (I say, the shooter Roland collects companions, without which he cannot cope, and they will certainly perish), I would generally think that the new limit is needed to exterminate the old companions of Baltimore who came from the novel, and surround him with only new characters.Childress is over, Aichros is over – Dr. Rose, we are very worried about you, do not go anywhere in the next comic. Moreover, dealing with the already introduced heroes, Mignola-Golden again add the character to the caste – I’m talking about Monsieur Marchand. And I must say that this is one of the most lively and interesting comic book heroes. Because he is appropriate, does not do and does not say unnecessary things. However, the same could be said in previous episodes about each new character. Marchand may still be as unnecessary cardboard as Harish.
Stanislav : Heh, I’m ready to blame Golden for everything =)
You will probably be surprised, but before sending it to the printing house, Mignola does not proofread all the issues he co-authored. There are authors with whom he has been working for a long time, and whom he completely trusts. With them, he preliminarily talks about global development, key moments in history and other important things. And in particular, and dialogues that affect the development of characters, he completely leaves it at the mercy of the co-authors.I do not see anything criminal in this approach, given that until now it has not particularly failed. And Chris has been working with Mike for more than a dozen years, so he is definitely on the “privileged” list. Mignola trusts him 100%, and I assume that he did not particularly check this particular episode. The only problem is that Golden, it seems, simply does not know how to write team comics, where you need to very carefully juggle the lines of characters, succinctly and accurately composing their portraits. So it turns out that one could not, and the second did not keep track. But this, again, is just my theory, nothing more.
Alexey : I look at such things simply – everyone in the output answers equally. Because the artist can call the screenwriter and ask: “Hey, you didn’t fall from an oak tree to write such a thing?” – well, or something like that. I don’t know how people talk on the phone.
But even if this episode belongs entirely to Golden – do you have the feeling that he changed his narrative style? Dialogues have become somewhat different, less poetic and more traditionally dramatic, this is the easiest to notice.Yes, there are more words scattered at the beginning of the story, retelling the previous events and demonstrating the key features of the characters than usual, because this is a “new beginning” for the series – but I kind of am not talking about that. I mean, how many extra words Kidd and Aichros say about “oh, what a deal is going on” . How much Sophia and Harish do a lot of chewing on the inner world of Baltimore. How, finally, Hodge says things that could easily remain subtext.
The structure of the plot has also changed quite significantly. But here the idea of Mignola and Golden is just clear – they changed the subgenre of their adventure novel, because it was required to raise rates. If events acquire global significance, and the number of opponents increases by an order of magnitude, then more than one Baltimore should go around the world, and you will not get off with temporary companions. It turns out that a team is needed – and then the “laws” by which the story is told change. Even Count Dracula, by the way, was not read alone in the book. Another thing is that “Baltimore” has always been the most purposeful series – we, even if we retreated into embedded narratives or flashbacks, always followed only the main character. The reader was as much a monomaniac as our steadfast tin soldier – the man on the page and the man above the page were only interested in walking, killing and revenge. “Cult” breaks this habit – from the very beginning of the storylines, two move, and then each group of characters is once again separated, so that we are already watching four, and if we count Marchand, then all five. And the events in these storylines do not develop as quickly and are not presented as sparingly as the readers of the series are used to.That in combination with new dialogues (which have not become more voluminous, but all the time it seems that the characters are talking too much somehow) creates an unusual impression from the series.
This is not all that I did not like the “Cult of the Red King”. He may not be the strongest in the series to date, but he is still an absolutely great adventure comic.
Stanislav : There is a feeling. And I think that this stretching and chewing is a consequence of the same change in the orientation of the series.Let me say it again: Baltimore’s satellites have limited screen time, so Golden tries to give everyone as many cues as possible. The decision is dubious, because these phrases often do not add depth to the characters. But from time to time they annoy with their obviousness or inappropriateness – the heroes are fighting for their lives and should be completely focused on the battle, but instead they exchange opinions about “how to live now” .
As for the other moment you noticed (the progression of the plot), you still read all the numbers at once.Imagine how it all dragged on at the “once a month” pace. In general, I am not a supporter of the approach when reading in collections significantly outperforms reading in singles. Any serialized comic strip should be readable in any format. I won’t say that “Cult” was really bad at singles, but sometimes the plot really didn’t move for the release. Add to this the story with additional remarks, and it seems that the writers did not approach their business very economically this time. After all, this is the first major arc since The Curse Bells , but how can they be compared in terms of saturation?
Alexey : There were two plots in the arch The Curse Bells – a new part of the “global” one, about Haygus, and “local”, about the bells. Both formally had open finals – the story with the bells could still continue, Hygus also escaped. At the same time, the arc had thematic completeness and a complete internal structure – the conflict appeared, heated up, resolved. In “Cult” there are also two plots with equally open endings – but they do “nothing”. Carthage generally came out useless – even the characters within the plot did not understand what they were doing there, and spoke unflatteringly about the importance of their opponents. Petersburg history could all fit in one shot, and there it would have been a place.
Stanislav : Exactly. For the ambitious title “The Cult of the Red King”, this story contributes too little to the development of, sorry, mythology. More precisely, none at all. The only thing that could hardly be called important new information was that the cult’s homeland was discovered in Carthage. But attentive readers have known about this since the time of The Infernal Train (this is where Lucretia sent her “train” with the priests). The records found in the original temple could shed light on how to fight evil, but it’s not that they haven’t been presented to us – no one can even read them now.Once again, I would like to return to the death of Hodge and its expediency. Already being ill, he wants to say something important to Rose. Gathers with strength and pushes the speech that not Henry, but precisely those like him, having gained knowledge, are able to defeat the Red King. And this knowledge seems to be obtained by Aichros and Kidd. Moreover, Demetrius even sacrifices his life to save them and Hodge, the only hope. And then he dies anyway. Without struggle and hope, it turns out that he did not have a chance, and all the sacrifices are in vain. The question is – why was it necessary to impose such a big burden on Khoja when, as it turned out, he was already on his way to the afterlife? This is completely illogical!
Alexei : The series generally easily writes checks, which are then not accepted by the bank – I had no expectations before reading, but when reading, of course, there were, and I assumed that something grandiose awaited us in Carthage. It is thanks to the ancient vampires from the locomotive. Well, Khoja was sent there, I thought, for a reason. If he was needed only as a character, he would have been left with Baltimore, so the contrast is more noticeable. But it turned out that Hodge was not needed at all. This, you know, is like when a new screenwriter unsuccessfully comes to a big episode – the old plot tails are thrown away, the favorite characters of the past author are “written off”, the heroes are thrown to a new place with a new task, without too much ceremony … But the screenwriter has not changed, and the new the direction of the five-issue series is not clear. And this we can make far-reaching conclusions, knowing the previous two dozen comics about Baltimore. And for some, this comic may be the first!
In my opinion, not only I think so – besides, that The Cult of the Red King opens with the inscription “twenty-sixth issue of the series”, everything has been done inside so that it can be perceived as the first one.As they write it – “ideal for new readers.” And here’s the curious thing. When in the first issue of the episode we are shown how the “Baltimore War” began, the scene with vampires devouring the dead on the battlefield is replayed in front of the reader’s eyes, and how Baltimore deprives Hygus of his eye, this scene is solved somewhat differently than its original version in Plague Ships . The difference is that in the first version, reality (and the page) turns red only at the moment when Baltimore injures Hygus. The horrors of war preceding this blow, including the appearance on the battlefield of vampires, giant bats, are performed in gray-purple tones. And when Highgus first visits Baltimore in human form, the colors are the same. This is, of course, the same color that Stewart dyes the skin of the living dead. A little later, when we discover that red in the stories about Baltimore means not only great blood and great anger, but also the presence of primordial evil (the eyes of the supreme vampires, for example), we will understand the symbolism – at this moment the Red King turned his gaze to Lord Baltimore , and has not let him down since. In Plague Ships , this color change indicates the moment at which the hero, unknowingly, declared war on the creatures of evil.
In The Cult, the entire scene as narrated by Harish is covered in red and orange. And further, when the action moves from the trenches to the hospital, the arrival of Haigus is also colored scarlet. Contrary to what is said right on top of these panels – that Baltimore shed the blood of monsters on the ground and, as he believes, started a plague and a new war – we see that Baltimore was already in the “red world.”He found himself in this world after the entire platoon had gone down, and has not left it since then – as if “woke up” in a nightmare that the Red King sees, and has been walking through it ever since.
However, it may always turn out that the red scale in this scene is needed only in order to more clearly separate it from the blue-violet (again) scale of “present time” and travel along the Baltic Sea.
Stanislav : I like your analysis, but I think the truth is in the middle. Stewart is unusually active in this arch with the entire gamut. The first cycle was in fact painted in only two colors – gray and red, and this perfectly created the necessary “desperate” mood of the series. Here the color scheme begins to boil. Hope has appeared in the world, and it has become brighter and richer – this is especially evident from the very first pages. This is how Stewart moves away from the dominant color. The consequence of this is the color separation between the scenes, which in turn seems to be a logical decision, given how many there are in the first release (more than four). Each episode, after both teams sail, has a key color (contrast and saturation) that acts almost like a filter. In this case, the flashback without this filter would look foreign. Another question is that red has a semantic load. I think that he symbolizes not the “nightmare” of Baltimore, but the “nightmare” of the whole world – this scene is about him as much as about Henry. At this moment, the Red King began to slowly awaken, and the world was flooded with blood.
In general, I would like to note that, in many respects, because of this, I liked the first issue the most. It turned out to be such a delicious mix between the tense atmosphere and the expectation of real adventure.Further, the key colors will remain, but Stewart will already restrain himself – in intensity they will lose to themselves the sample of the beginning of history.
Alexey : Well, why are you putting the nightmare in quotes! This is really a nightmare – the Red King sleeps and sees terrible dreams, and we live in these dreams. And this allegory of Lewis Carroll, sewn back into Baltimore, many limits back, will undoubtedly come back to haunt us. What to expect first, through the looking glass or the appearance of the Red Queen?
Stanislav : Heh, well, we have already presented one Red Queen in this arch.Judging by the fact that Henry failed to deal with her here, she will still shoot in the future. By the way, how do you like the decision to move the coven of witches to St. Petersburg? It is a well-known fact that Mike likes to use Russia in his works, but even so, the choice of the northern capital as one of the key locations of action pleasantly surprised me.
Alexey : There are few bears. And what, you can draw a boyar hat on a costume in the style of “Russian nights in the Crazy Horse cabaret”, but you can’t draw bears on the street? Okay, I understand – it’s winter, they have a hibernation.
But seriously, St. Petersburg is not really needed in this story yet. With the same success, the heroes could sail to any Scandinavian or Baltic city. Nothing particularly “a la russ” in the antagonists and the mythology of the plot is also felt. I generally disliked the “Scarlet Witch” – if not for the hat, then for this inappropriately told Baltimore “You consider yourself a hero” (after all, every reader knows that this is not true). Perhaps, it will still reveal its best side for us, but Mignola is usually above trivial national stereotypes, about which it is not interesting to read precisely because of their triviality.Petersburg in the series does not even have visual recognition – it is to the same extent “snowy Russia, filmed in Canada” as in, I don’t know, the Russian part of “Boys”. Against the background of how wonderful Bergting draws, this is very sad.
Stanislav : I would hope that St. Petersburg, as a place of action, will have its own meaning, but I perfectly understand that in this series the locations have only one function – to show how geographically the plague has spread.
As for Bergting, last time I praised him.But that was an advance. Now I considered drawing more demanding, and there are several key points that I want to note. Firstly, Bergting is a good, as they say, “storyteller” – the action goes smoothly and comfortably. Although I was a little confused in the scene where Baltimore rose after “death” – I did not immediately understand how the witches’ pawns were located in relation to him. Secondly, he is best at all sorts of monsters and other fantasy creatures (what a jellyfish, eh!). I am especially happy about this, because there will only be more of them in the series.Third, he paints Rigo’s scar very realistically. This is a trifle that I would not pay attention to if any other artist were here – with a probability of 95% in his performance, the scar would not affect the contour of the eye. Peter crumpled his eye, making it truly ugly. However, in this regard, he has not yet got the hang of it, because sometimes strange panels come across. Fourthly, despite the previous point, it is in the display of faces and facial expressions that I see the weakest point of the picture. On close-ups, he clearly conveys the emotions of the heroes, but on medium shots, he sometimes goes crazy.Especially Sophia and, sadly, Henry. In general, I note that with Bergting Ellie hit the mark, but his local style has not yet been fully formed. However, this is a completely normal process. Compare Stenbeck’s drawing on Plague Ships and The Wolf and the Apostle – evolution is visible to the naked eye.
Well, we walked through everyone and saluted everyone, it’s time to sum up the results. What’s your final verdict?
Alexey : Honestly, I don’t want to be the grumpiest and ever dissatisfied reviewer on the site, but all the time I fall into the hands of comics that could become brilliant, that promised a lot – and turned out to be empty inside. The new arc of “Baltimore”, outwardly very correct and keeping the brand, came out just like that. He did not give anything to the mind or heart, and even technically proved to be faulty. Baltimore is still very beautiful comics that are fun to read, but I expected more. Golden and Bergting can do more, and we’ve seen that. Well, let’s wait for the next episode to kill the smack.
Stanislav : I agree. “Baltimore”, having changed direction, ceased to stand firmly on his feet. This mini-series had tremendous potential in all areas that we discussed, but the authors did not really realize it.Whether this was an accidental misunderstanding or will become a systemic problem of the second cycle, we will find out in the next story. I believe in the best and hope that the mistakes of this arch will be accounted for in the future.
Ketchup “Baltimore” “Tomato”, no preservatives | Research of goods from Roskachestvo
Tomato ketchup without preservatives under the Baltimor trademark is produced by Unilever Rus LLC in Russia. The sample was purchased in the “Auchan” store at the address: Moscow, st. Vavilova, 3.
The composition does not contain toxic elements and heavy metals. Microbiological indicators meet the established requirements. No pesticides or GMOs were found. There are no impurities.
Ketchup does not contain preservatives (including sorbic and benzoic acids) and synthetic colors, but it contains a sweetener (saccharin). The manufacturer stated it in the labeling, however, the leading Roskachestvo standard does not allow the presence of this component in the composition. The salt content meets the leading Roskachestvo standard.
As part of this ketchup, the amount of dry matter does not meet the leading Roskachestvo standard, which may indirectly indicate a relatively low proportion of tomato paste in the product. In addition, it contains starch. The manufacturer indicated it in the composition, but the leading Roskachestvo standard does not allow the presence of starch in tomato ketchup.
The content of hydroxymethylfurfural (a toxic substance that can form when heated) is higher than the established leading Roskachestvo standard, which may indicate that the tomato paste was overheated or burnt during the preparation of ketchup.
Ketchup is a pasty dense mass without skin particles and coarse fruit particles, with the presence of seeds and spice particles. The color is red-brown, uniform throughout the mass. The taste and smell are sweet and sour, with a pronounced aroma of tomato products and used spices, without any foreign taste and smell.

90,000 German virologist responds to COVID dissidents’ allegations of coronavirus | Analysis of events in political life and society in Germany | DW
At demonstrations of COVID dissidents, in discussions about the coronavirus with opponents of vaccinations and people who believe in conspiracy theories, or on the Internet, both rather ridiculous and, at first glance, convincing statements like “The virus is not so dangerous” are constantly encountered, ” The pharmaceutical industry only wants to make money on the pandemic “,” Nothing will happen to young people. “
One of the leading German virologists, professor at the University of Bonn, director of the Institute of Virology, Hendrik Streeck, commented for DW on the most frequent statements of COVID dissidents and opponents of government measures to combat the spread of coronavirus.
“The virus is not so dangerous. It is the media, politicians and scientists who make an elephant out of a fly.”
Hendrik Streck: This is not the case. All studies conducted so far, both in the United States, where they lead to the conclusion of a rather low mortality rate, and in other countries with conclusions about a very high number of deaths, unequivocally show that coronavirus causes higher mortality than seasonal flu.
In a study conducted in the Heinsberg district (in western Germany, near Düsseldorf – Rev. ), we found that the virus is at least four times more dangerous than seasonal flu. Of course, the results of a study always depend on the population in which it is carried out. In any case, this virus should be taken seriously, but not overly dramatized.
“Politicians and the media talk about a large number of coronavirus infections every day. However, I don’t know anyone in my circle who gets sick with COVID-19.”
Among my relatives, two people fell ill with COVID-19.
“There have been many demonstrations against government restrictive measures due to the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Have there been outbreaks after them? No!”
The protests were held outdoors and the risk of infection is much lower than at indoor events. In addition, it is very difficult to trace whether there was a massive infection at such events as in Berlin, where many participants gathered from different cities and then returned back.It is much easier to track the spread of the virus when all attendees are from the same city.
Protest in Berlin against restrictive measures in the fight against coronavirus
“There are a large number of deaths in Italy and the United States, but not in Germany. Something is wrong with that.”
In Germany, people also died from the coronavirus. Compared to us in Italy and the United States, the virus spread very quickly among a large number of people, leading to overwhelming hospitals. In addition, the virus in these countries has penetrated into risk groups in which those infected have a high probability of death. This was avoided in Germany.
“Vaccinations are only needed so that the pharmaceutical industry can earn as much as possible.”
The assertion is invalid. The pharmaceutical industry, of course, makes money from the vaccine. However, health insurance funds in Germany spend on average only 0.3 percent of their annual spending on medicines on vaccines. In addition, the pharmaceutical industry must earn money to cover its vaccine development costs.
“The virus mutates so often that the vaccine will not provide any protection against it. Or else we will have to vaccinate against it like the flu every year.”
Such statements are not currently possible. The virus mutates, that’s true, but its mutations are not as strong as the flu virus. Whether the vaccine will be effective, and how often it will be necessary to vaccinate, we cannot say now, because there is no vaccine yet.
Participant of a protest in Stuttgart
“The restrictive measures introduced by the authorities to combat the spread of the virus are excessive. I want to live free again.”
We know that the current regulations – keeping distance, hygiene and wearing a face shield – are effective. Thanks to them, we were able to prevent the wider spread of the virus.
In addition, the effect of these rules is probably that if someone gets infected, then fewer viruses.Due to this, the infected person shows milder symptoms. As we know about other viruses, the more a person gets, the more severe his symptoms. As they say, the degree of poisoning depends on the dose.
By keeping our distance and using protective masks, we achieve this goal – to reduce the dose. Thus, we are all probably contributing to the fact that in Germany, more and more people are infected, if it leads to illness, then in a mild form.
“In neighboring countries – the Netherlands and Denmark – no one wears protective masks in stores. But people are not suicidal there either. “
Yes, indeed, in some countries they do not wear protective masks, and it is also correct that the mask should not be worn everywhere. It is important to wear a mask where it is impossible to maintain a distance.
At the same time in the Netherlands, compared to previous years and compared to Germany, mortality has increased, while in Germany the figure has remained the same, since we have not so many people infected.
“Coronavirus was created in a Chinese laboratory and accidentally got out.”
It is unlikely that this virus was created in a laboratory. As far as I know, such studies are not being carried out because it is too dangerous. Also, it’s impossible to tell exactly where the virus came from. A virus cannot contain a gene sequence that could not exist in nature.
It should also be said that laboratories such as those in Wuhan, China, are equipped with security gateways, thanks to which viruses and bacteria cannot enter different rooms, and cannot escape from the laboratory due to an oversight.
Therefore, I consider it extremely unlikely that such a thing could happen, but it is impossible to prove it. As it is impossible to prove the opposite.
“Even if I get infected, I am young, I am in good health. Most likely, I will not get sick, I will only have symptoms.”
Statistically, it is true that young people with good health are asymptomatic or with mild symptoms. However, it happens that young people develop severe symptoms and sometimes die.Such cases are also known.
Professor Hendrik Streck is Germany’s leading coronavirus expert. The director of the Institute of Virology at the University Hospital in Bonn is leading a long-term study of the spread of coronavirus in Heinsberg in western Germany, which became one of the epicenters of the epidemic in the country in the spring of 2020.

Abstract
The business elites of the countries of the Baltic region are one of the key subjects of their development, determining the present and future of the states. They form an integral part of the transnational capitalist class that emerged from the global economy and the worldwide division of labor. Using significant statistical material, the author carries out a comparative analysis of billionaires and millionaires in the Baltic region. The article considers such characteristics of business elites as the number, size of aggregate wealth, gender composition, average number of children, territorial distribution, global mobility, industry specialization, oligarchism, etc.It is noted that the strengths of the German business elite are a high level of wealth, a large number and significant rootedness in German society, a high proportion of women, a relatively even settlement throughout the country, a significant industrial and technological orientation, a low level of oligarchism; weak – a low proportion of those who got rich only on their own, and a low talent. The strengths of the business elite in Russia are marked by a significant amount of wealth, relative youth, a significant proportion of those who have become rich exclusively on their own, and a high level of giftedness; as weak – a small number and insignificant rootedness in society, an excessive predominance of men, an overconcentration in Moscow, a financial and raw material orientation and a high level of oligarchism.
Abstract
Local business elites make a major contribution to the development of the Baltic region’s countries, shaping their present and future. The Baltic business elites are an integral part of the transnational capitalist class – a product of the global economy and the global division of labor. Drawing on a sizeable body of statistics, the author conducts a comparative analysis of the Baltic states’ financial elites. The author considers such characteristics of business elites as their number, total wealth, gender composition, average number of children in their families, geographical distribution, global mobility, industry specialization, a tendency towards oligarchy, and others.Germany’s business elites are strong and are characterized by considerable wealth, a large number of billionaires and millionaires, strong roots in the German society, a high level of female representation, a relatively even geographical distribution, engagement in industrial production and technology, and a weak tendency towards oligarchy. Yet, Germany has a small proportion of self-made and talented business people. The strong points of Russia’s business elite are considerable wealth, relatively young age, and a high proportion of self-made and talented business people.Russia’s business elite is limited in number, has weak roots in the society, a low level of female representation, its hyper-concentration in Moscow, a strong tendency towards oligarchy and specialization in finance and raw materials.
