If in mice over the past two decades there has been significant progress not only in appearance, but also in terms of filling, then it is difficult to come up with at least something new with keyboards. However. The standard for these input devices is 104 keys, with a full set of necessary characters. There are shortened versions (TKL – Ten Key Less), in which there are approximately 87 buttons or slightly less.They are convenient due to their smaller size in the absence of a numeric keypad, since they take up less space and do not interfere with mouse movements (and you do not need to stretch your hands too far). In general, an option for games. But there is also 60% of the keyboard – without function keys, arrows and a block of editorial buttons. It is easy to guess that this species is the rarest, especially in our area. Who needs it and why? It is difficult to give an unambiguous answer to this question. But a certain trend for such keyboards has already formed.Moreover, even Razer, in order to keep up with fashion, has released 60% of the Huntsman Mini, which will be the subject of this review.

The keyboard comes in a box with a Razer-specific design. It is surprisingly informative and in addition to marketing information, there is also a list of combinations that allows you to switch backlight modes without installing software.

But what is strange is the absence of dampers and packing film inside. However, this is a demo sample, the retailers are likely to have it all.

The package contains a removable cable with USB Type-A on one end and USB Type-C on the other, a congratulatory sheet from the director of the company, instructions and a couple of stickers.

Appearance

The appearance of the Razer Huntsman Mini is cute due to its simple appearance and compact size. In width, it is slightly larger than the block of typed keys on a standard keyboard. The body is made in skeleton style, the base plate of the buttons is made of aluminum alloy with a thickness of 1 mm. There are only 61 buttons. The device weighs 458 grams without a cable, it can withstand twisting well, albeit with some creaks. The keyboard color can be either black or white.

The key layout is made according to the ANSI standard with long single-row Shift and Enter. The only difference is the Esc button in the upper left corner, which takes the place of the “tilde”. The main characters of the Latin alphabet are applied by double molding on the PBT-plastic caps in the middle at the top and are not subject to wear. They are highlighted. Alternative key assignments that work in conjunction with Fn are indicated by painted white characters on the front edges of the caps. The keycaps are shaped with a distinctive cylindrical groove and are rough to the touch.There are no Cyrillic symbols here and cannot be for technical reasons (at least in black).

Functional, multimedia, editorial commands, control of other additional functions, and even arrows are placed in an alternative layout and work exclusively in combination with the Fn button. Actually, the happy owner of the Razer Huntsman Mini will have to remember and make friends with all these combinations if he plans to use this keyboard to the fullest.

This keyboard features Razer branded Clicky Optical Switch in purple. In many ways, this is an imitation of clicking mechanics, since there are no physical contacts here, and the signal is obtained by opening the shutter when the key pin is lowered, through which the light from the diodes passes. A carriage and a latch are used to produce sound. The pin is returned to its original position by a spring, and the stabilizers on each key force it to move along a relatively flat and stable trajectory.Pressing is light, with a loud click, but without significant tactile feedback. The force required to activate the switch is 45 grams, and the travel to actuation is 1.5 mm. Formally, there are minimal delays, since there is no signal jitter, and therefore no double clicks. In addition, the MTBF is declared by the manufacturer in the region of 100 million clicks. However, at the very top of the key backstop there is a dead zone where the switch can be reactivated without resetting the clicking mechanism. Alternatively, this type of keyboard can be equipped with a Razer Linear Optical Switch – linear, no clicks, with a force of 40 grams and a travel of 1 mm before actuation.

The stabilizers of the long buttons are internal, but they are attached to the caps through wedge adapters, which raises doubts about their durability. On the other hand, at least such fasteners can be easily replaced without having to look for a new cap. In terms of the stability of pressing long buttons, everything is relatively good.They play a little, but at least they are pressed without distortions. By the way, you can put any Cherry-compatible keycaps here. A semicircular lens at the back of the movement also provides excellent illumination of the symbols.

Minimum height of the keyboard in profile along the back row of keys with folded legs is 37 mm. With the help of two-level fold-out legs, you can increase the tilt angle by 6 or 9 degrees and the height of the keyboard, respectively, up to 43 or 48 mm. The rows of buttons do not have a pronounced ergonomic slope.

The USB Type-C port for connecting a detachable cable is located on the rear edge on the left side of the case. There are no other external ports.

Medium thickness nylon braided cable with increased rigidity, easy to memorize a given shape. Its length is 1.95 meters. A reusable rubber tie is used to rewind the wire. The ferrite ring is missing.

Connecting the cable is easy to touch, thanks to the symmetrical shape and routing around the connector.By the way, the manufacturer claims that you can use any USB Type C cable, provided that it fits in size in the notch near the keyboard port.

On the back of the keyboard there are four small square rubber feet at the corners. With them, the device clings perfectly to the table. And the entire rear panel is covered with diagonally engraved Razer slogans “For gamers, by gamers”.

Legs can be deployed in two levels – 6 and 9 degrees. In both cases, there are rubber stickers on their edges. However, with the legs open, the device becomes much less slip-resistant than with folded legs.

The backlight looks bright and beautiful. The color of each button is individually configurable, and a variety of lighting effects can be connected. In addition, the local LEDs are capable of correctly reproducing the white color.

Functionality

The

Razer Huntsman Mini is ready to go out of the box, even without installing a driver.True, in this case, the possibilities for customizing the backlight will be significantly limited. However, the keyboard has five on-board built-in memory profiles that can be switched on the fly, where you can write a lot. Almost all additional functions are realized through a combination with the Fn button and are mainly what did not fit into the shortened layout of commands from a standard-sized keyboard. When you press Fn, all available keyboard shortcuts are highlighted in white. Let’s take a look at their list.

Razer Synapse must be active for quick macro recording. Otherwise, pressing the Fn + Y combination will cause only a quick blinking of this key in red. So, to record a quick macro, press the Fn + Y combination. The Y key will begin pulsing slowly in red. Software

The Razer Huntsman Mini, like the vast majority of the company’s other products, use the versatile Razer Synapse 3 software, which automatically installs on Windows 10 upon request.In other cases, you will have to visit the official website to download. We have already reviewed this application several times in previous reviews, so we will focus only on the main points. So, in the main window of the application, all the tabs have a modular structure, and among them we are only interested in the part that concerns the keyboard and macros (provided that the user nevertheless decided to install this module).

In the keyboard settings tab, you can reassign keys in the main and alternative layouts (Hypershift).The range of available commands is wide, as always. In the basic layout, you can change everything except the Win and Fn buttons. In the alternative, almost half of the keyboard cannot be reassigned, which concerns additional commands in the Fn layer. Changes are saved to one of five hybrid profiles. In the settings of the game mode, you can turn it on, off or make it active when you start the game. In this mode, not only the Win key is disabled, but, if desired, both Alt + Tab and Alt + F4. The Keyboard Properties tab opens the corresponding standard Windows application.

In the backlight settings, you can adjust the brightness of the glow, color, lighting effects. You can configure the backlight power saving options, for example, turning it off by time when the screen turns off or a certain time of inactivity. For more detailed customization, especially the individual color selection for each key, you will need to install the Chroma Studio module.

This is how the macro editor looks like. For recording, keyboard and mouse commands are available, recording the trajectory of the cursor movement and setting all options for time delays and methods for playing commands.

Ergonomics and Testing

The

Razer Huntsman Mini is pretty standard for its 60% format. It is compact and will hardly require getting used to a completely normal printed layout of buttons, as for those who use conventional keyboards, and especially for those who spend most of their time on 13 “or 14” laptops. But what will take a really long time to get used to is the lack of separate arrow keys. And also to the fact that all the “cut off” function keys are now available exclusively through combinations with Fn.

In terms of ergonomics, everything is not bad. The body is sturdy and does not flex with heavy use. With the two-level legs, you can always choose the appropriate angle for the keyboard, depending on the position of the elbows relative to the table. The keyboard takes up minimal space and is easy to move around if needed. And if it is not necessary, then it is worth folding the folding legs and the device will be perfectly held in place with rubber blotches. A lot of space is left for the mouse and mat.

In terms of tactile sensations, the keyboard shows itself interesting.Yes, there are clicky switches and slightly roughened PBT button caps, but there is no clear tactile feedback inherent in classic mechanisms. The Razer Clicky Optical Switch has a loud and dry click, but is very easy to press. The keys sag under the fingers, emit a sound, but do not give what is called “feedback” about actuation. Accordingly, the pleasure of typing fades slightly. However, for fans of “tube knocking” satisfaction will be guaranteed and in full. I didn’t get a chance to try out the Razer Linear Optical Switch, maybe the situation is a little better with them.At the very least, they seem to be the more logical choice if games are prioritized over work and printing.

The backlight in the Razer Huntsman Mini is very successful and is capable of delivering beautiful white over a wide range of brightness settings. Best of all, base colors can be customized without installing software.

Razer Synapse software remains true to itself. It is quite bulky, but it gets better over time. By and large, if the user does not plan to customize the color of the keys individually and record macros, then you can do without installing the driver.By the way, the keyboard makes it quite convenient to switch onboard profiles, which is also important in certain scenarios of use.

Razer Huntsman Mini supports full NKRO anti-hosting, allowing all buttons to be activated simultaneously and in any combination.

Results

The

Razer Huntsman Mini is an entertaining and rare keyboard in an unusual 60% layout format. It is compact, tightly assembled, with good illumination, durable and fast optical switches, keycaps made of PBT (by the way, you can choose almost any keycaps here, according to your taste).There are two color options: white and black. There are two options for switches: clicking purple and red linear. There is onboard memory and advanced software. In general, there are many advantages in this product.

There are only two disadvantages of this device: the cost is quite high even by Razer standards. And the stabilizers of the long keys, which are not attached via separate mini-switches, but in a wedge way to the adapters under the caps.

If you evaluate the device more subjectively, then it is pleased with the overall quality of workmanship and a certain “wow” effect that it produces on the user.But it is frustrating to have to learn key combinations to perform those familiar actions that are performed on a standard keyboard with one click. In general, it is difficult for me to understand for what purposes exactly such 60% of the devices are used. And still it is still impossible to get rid of the feeling that the Huntsman Mini would not have appeared on the market if HyperX had not released a limited batch of Ducky One 2 Mini under their brand.

This year, guests from all over Ukraine came to the event from Ulichnaya Eda and organizer Ira Veter. Most of them followed the dress code, so the festival was full of fluffy skirts, corsets and flies.

More than 100 artists performed on 4 stages, including Elderbrook, Tube & Berger, Reinier Zonneveld and Claptone.
