90,000 South Carolina lawyer ordered his own murder so that his eldest son would get insurance. His wife and youngest son were murdered three months ago
Margaret, Paul and Alex Murdo
Maggie Murdo’s Facebook page
53-year-old South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdo orchestrated the assassination attempt on himself so that his eldest son could receive insurance in the amount of 10 million dollars. This happened three months after Murdo’s wife and youngest son were found murdered near Murdo’s house. The investigation brought to the attention of the police two more deaths that may be related to the lawyer’s family.
The Murdo family is one of the most powerful legal dynasties in South Carolina. Late on June 7, Alex Murdo found his 52-year-old wife, Margaret, and youngest son, Paul, 22, dead outside the family’s country home. He called 911. The police found that the dead had received multiple gunshot wounds.
At the time of his death, Murdo’s son was in the status of a defendant in the boat crash case in February 2019. According to the investigation, he was drunk and became the culprit of the accident, which killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach, several other people were injured. Paul Murdo pleaded not guilty. Despite the death of the accused, the case remains open, and the family of the deceased girl has filed a number of lawsuits against Murdo.
Alex Murdo and his eldest son Buster have posted a $100,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the person or people who killed Margaret and Paul. The defense and brothers of Alex Murdo rejected the assumptions about his involvement in the murder of his relatives.
On September 4, there was an assassination attempt on Alex Murdo himself. He called 911 and reported that he had been shot at. Initially, its representatives said that the lawyer was attacked when he stopped on the road due to problems with a car wheel. Murdo was shot in the head, but survived.
But 10 days later, it turned out that Murdo himself asked 61-year-old Curtis Edward Smith, whose interests he represented in the speeding case in 2013, to shoot him for insurance. If the plan had succeeded, Murdo’s eldest son would have received $10 million in compensation. The lawyer admitted this to lawyers and investigators.
According to attorney Richard Harputlian, Murdo came up with the plan to kill himself while battling opioid addiction and depression after the death of his wife and youngest son. He decided that in the event of suicide, his eldest son would not receive insurance compensation, and agreed with Smith. The scheme was “an attempt to protect your child,” the lawyer said.
Smith was eventually charged with several crimes, including aiding suicide and conspiracy to commit fraud. Smith is under arrest. Alex Murdo has not been charged.
The day before the assassination attempt, Alex Murdo left his law firm. He was accused of embezzling her funds
On September 3, the day before the assassination attempt, Murdo announced his resignation from his own law firm, Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick. In the firm, his resignation was explained by the fact that he appropriated part of its funds. The specific amount was not specified, but The New York Times source in the company said that we are talking about millions of dollars.
Later, Murdo’s lawyers reported that he spent most of the money taken from the company and its clients on painkillers. The lawyer himself apologized to everyone he hurt, including relatives and colleagues, and stated that he was undergoing rehabilitation.
“The murder of my wife and son caused an incredibly difficult period in my life. I have made many decisions that I sincerely regret,” his statement said.
Murder of Alex Murdo’s wife and son leads to investigation into the deaths of two more people
Based on information gathered during the investigation into the murder of Margaret and Paul Murdo, the state police have reopened the case into the death of 19-year-old Stephen Smith, who attended the same school with Buster Murdo. In 2015, his body was found on the road 16 kilometers from Murdo’s house. It is assumed that Smith was hit by a car whose driver fled the scene of an accident. At the same time, no charges were brought against anyone. Smith’s mother claimed that her son was killed, possibly out of hatred, as he was gay.
On September 15, South Carolina law enforcement announced that they were opening a criminal investigation into the death of Gloria Satterfield, who worked as a housekeeper for Murdo for about 25 years. This decision was made on the basis of an appeal by Hampton County Coroner Angela Topper and information collected during another investigation involving Alex Murdo.
Satterfield died in 2018 at the age of 57 from injuries sustained in a fall at the Murdo home. Her death certificate listed her cause of death as “natural,” which is inconsistent with injuries sustained as a result of the fall, Topper said. According to her, the coroner was not informed of the death of the housekeeper, and an autopsy was not performed on her body.
The sons of the housekeeper filed a lawsuit against several people, including Alex Murdo, accusing them of not paying $475,000 in compensation that was promised to them after the death of their mother.
