9 Best Winter Ales of 2021

It’s getting colder. It’s getting darker. And the haze of summer is slowly setting behind us. But not all is lost as we head into the dark, dark months of winter. The colder weather makes hot coffee taste better or gives you an excuse to wear that scarf your mom knit you last year. Plus, for the next few months you have a reason to cozy up inside by the fire and drink one of those beers you’ve been sitting on for the last couple of months. 

Here in the Untappd winter wonderland, we’re pretty excited to crack open those winter beers such as juniper-flavored pales, snowy barleywines, and fresh hop celebration ales (if you get our. ..snow drift). 

Sometimes called Christmas ales or winter warmers, winter ales aren’t technically a beer style, per se, but essentially beers that celebrate the season. Consider winter ales a brewing tradition. 

Often in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Northern Europe, brewers would make a particularly strong dark ale that would warm people against the chill of the coldest months of the year. 

Going even further, brewers might add spices like ginger or nutmeg to play into the festive holiday spirit. 

Historically, these winterish beers have fallen under two categories: spiced Wassail (a dark, malty traditional English drink that can be a hot, spiced cider, wine, mead, or beer) or strong English ale. 

In the early 1900s, the original Burton ale made by the brewers of Burton-on-Trent was often considered one of the most popular hopped winter beers of the time. While the popularity of darker ales started to die out in the 1960s, the growing American craft beer movement in the United States in the mid-1970s helped revive the tradition. Starting with Anchor Brewing’s now-influential Christmas Ale, which was first brewed in 1975. 

Overall today, you’ll find that this beer category can be pretty murky. You might find some winter ales to be dark and malty. Others are fresh and hoppy. Some perhaps are barrel aged. And even more could include holiday ingredients like maple syrup, molasses, plums, raisins, and more. 

Regardless of the exact definition, one thing remains the same: These winter beers are meant to be unwrapped and enjoyed like the first present given on Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, or Christmas or just during your White Elephant party. 

Treat these beers like…well, treats. Drinks that are meant to be a celebration during some of the darkest, coldest, toughest days of the year.

Brewers Association Beer Style Guidelines

The Brewers Association Beer Style Guidelines are compiled by the Brewers Association, copyright: 1993 through and including 2021. With Style Guideline Committee assistance and review by Chris Swersey, Paul Gatza, Chuck Skypeck, Kaylyn Kirkpatrick, Chris Williams, Andrew Sparhawk, Dan Rabin, and suggestions from Great American Beer Festival® and World Beer Cup℠ judges, and brewers and beer lovers from around the world.

Since 1979 the Brewers Association has provided beer style descriptions as a reference for brewers and beer competition organizers. Much of the early work was based on the assistance and contributions of beer journalist Michael Jackson; more recently these guidelines were greatly expanded, compiled, and edited by Charlie Papazian. The task of creating a realistic set of guidelines is always complex. The beer style guidelines developed by the Brewers Association use sources from the commercial brewing industry, beer analyses, and consultations with beer industry experts and knowledgeable beer enthusiasts as resources for information.

The Brewers Association’s beer style guidelines reflect, as much as possible, historical significance, authenticity, or a high profile in the current commercial beer market. Often, the historical significance is not clear, or a new beer type in a current market may represent only a passing fad and is quickly forgotten. For these reasons, the addition of a style or the modification of an existing one is not undertaken lightly and is the product of research, consultation, and consideration of market actualities, and may take place over several years.

Another factor considered is that current commercial examples do not always fit well into the historical record, and instead represent a modern version of the style. Our decision to include a particular historical beer style takes into consideration the style’s brewing traditions and the need to preserve those traditions in today’s market. The more a beer style has withstood the test of time, marketplace, and consumer acceptance, the more likely it is to be included in the Brewers Association’s style guidelines.

The availability of commercial examples plays a large role in whether a beer style “makes the list.” It is important to consider that not every historical or commercial beer style can be included, nor is every commercial beer representative of the historical tradition (i.e., a brewery labeling a brand as a particular style does not always indicate a fair representation of that style).

Please note that almost all of the classic and traditional beer style guidelines have been cross-referenced with data from commercially available beers representative of the style. The primary reference for this purpose has been Professor Anton Piendl’s comprehensive work published in the German Brauindustrie magazine through the years 1982 to 1994, from the series “Biere Aus Aller Welt.”

Each style description is purposefully written independently of any reference to another beer style to the greatest extent possible. Furthermore, as much as it is possible, beer character is not described in terms of ingredients or process. These guidelines attempt to emphasize final evaluation of the product and try not to judge or regulate the formulation or process by which it was brewed, except in special circumstances that clearly define a style.

WTF is a Firkin?

A Firkin is a 10.8 gallon vessel used for cask-conditioning.
The conditioning process: filtered beer is transferred into casks, carbonated, sealed and then undergoes a slight final fermentation in the cask.
The net result is a beer that has a much gentler level of carbonation, a rounder mouthfeel, and since it is unfiltered, usually shows a slightly more complex flavor and aromatic profile.

How much are tickets?

General admission tickets are $70 each. Designated driver tickets are $20.

Can I purchase tickets at the Brewpub?

What do I get with my tickets

Entry to the Cask Ales Festival from 2pm-6pm, beer samples from Blue Point and 50+ breweries, and a firkin good time!

Are children and minors allowed?

This is a 21+ event. There are no exceptions and ID is required.

Can I cancel my ticket?

All sales are final. If Cask Fest is cancelled for any reason, a full refund will be issued.

What is the weather policy?

The Cask Ales Festival will be held rain or shine.

Why are you requiring proof of vaccination/negative Covid-19 test to enter this event?

From the beginning, we’ve been committed to doing everything we can to protect the health and safety of our entire community. Given the current surge in cases due to the Delta variant, we’ve made the decision to put our guests, our staff and our community first by implementing this additional safety measure.

What if someone is unable to receive the vaccination for medical reasons?

For those who are unable to receive the vaccine for medical or other reasons, we will allow proof of negative Covid-19 test within 72 hours of the event.

What type of negative test is considered acceptable?

A negative Covid-19 test result (molecular, PCR, or antigen) that was administered by an official testing center. Test must be taken no more than 72 hours prior to entry. Home testing kit results will not be accepted.

What are you requiring as proof of vaccination documentation?

Proof of vaccination requires in-person display of your vaccination card, NYS Excelsior Pass, or a clear and legible printed photocopy or photo on your phone.

Is there a charge for parking?

Complimentary parking is available at River Avenue Elementary Schooland the Watch Hill Ferry Lot. There is also ample parking throughout the village of Patchogue. Please keep in mind that much of that parking is metered.
We STRONGLY ENCOURAGE using a ride share!!!

How can I get there via Public Transportation?

The brewery is located 1 mile from the Patchogue LIRR station, and is easily walkable.

Do we have a specific time we’re required to arrive?

No, the gates will be open for the duration of the event, beginning at 2pm. Arrive by 1:30pm to cut back on long lines.

What do we do when we arrive?

Upon arrival our security team will check your proof of vaccine or negative COVID test, as well as your ID (names must match). There will be separate, clearly marked lanes for both vaccine proof and negative test. You’ll receive your tasting glass and can enter the best firkin day ever at 2pm.

What should I bring with me?

21+ valid photo ID

Proof of FULL vaccination or negative 72 hour covid test

What is the capacity for the event?

Approximately 3000 guests.

I need to leave early – can I?

Yes, you can leave whenever you’d like. If you plan to drink please arrange a safe ride home. We strongly encourage rideshare – Pickup area will be clearly marked.

I need to arrive late – can I?

You can arrive at any time. Proceed directly to the entry gate.

Will there be sanitizer available?

There will be hand sanitizing stations throughout the event.

Do I have to wear a mask?

Masks are not required for attendees during Cask Fest. Masks are strongly recommended for unvaccinated guests.

What do I do if I see someone that makes me feel unsafe?

Please alert a member of the event staff if there is any situation that you feel is unsafe. All staff will be wearing clearly marked shirts.

Will there be food for sale?

Guests can purchase food from various vendors and food trucks throughout the event.

Will there be vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options?

Food trucks will be providing their menus on the day of the event.

Will there be alcohol for sale?

There will not be any alcohol for sale at the event.

Will there be wine and/or cider options?

We will have LIIT, our line of gluten free hard tea seltzers, available.

Can I bring my own food and beverages?

Outside food and beverage is not permitted.

Will there be water stations?

There will be free water stations throughout the festival.

Can I buy beer from the Brewpub and bring it into the festival area?

The Brewpub will be closed during Cask Fest.

I didn’t finish all of my beer – can I take it home?

Sorry, no beverages or food can be brought outside the festival.

Can I bring my own cooler?

No outside food or beverage will be permitted.

Will there be children’s programming?

No. Only guests 21+ will be permitted to enter.

Can I bring my dog?

No pets will be permitted unless they are a service animal.

Is re-entry allowed?

There will be no re-entry into the gates for this event.

Will non-alcoholic beverages be available?

Yes. Subtle Tea will be available for purchase, as well as beverages from participating food trucks.

25th Anniversary Ale: Blended to Perfection

We are excited to unveil “25”—the latest edition of our annual Anniversary Ale series.

“25” is a tour de force blend of five barrel-aged beers created to mark our 25^th anniversary year. Additionally, for the first time ever, we are releasing this beer in tandem with a limited Anniversary Trio Pack featuring “25” as well as two component ales—2021 Parabola Autumn Edition and 2021 Stickee Monkee.

The story of “25” begins with what Brewmaster Matt Brynildson calls “our annual rite of passage—the blending of the Anniversary Ale with the help of local winemakers.”

The Art of Blending

The idea of including winemakers goes back to the blending of our very first Anniversary Ale in 2006. “Winemakers are practicing experts in the art of blending, so it seemed natural to call on them,” Matt says. “They’ve been a part of it ever since.”

True to form, an all-star cast of Paso Robles winemakers convened at the brewery on July 15, 2021 for the blending of “25.” They broke into teams to create their own preferred blends from five barrel-aged component ales, then voted as a group on the winning blend.

As always, it was a friendly but spirited competition, with the winners not only gaining bragging rights, but also the coveted cardboard crown that is passed along each year.

Rising to the Occasion

Winemakers from the following Paso Robles wineries participated in this year’s blending: Booker Vineyard, Desparada Wines, Epoch Estate Wines, Halter Ranch Vineyard, Herman Story, Ledge Vineyards, Tablas Creek Vineyard, TH Estate Wines, Thacher Winery and Torrin Wine.

For the first time, the winemakers were joined by two members of Firestone Walker’s Brewmaster’s Collective beer club, who won the chance to participate in the blending session. Russell From of Herman Story Wines and Taylor Mathiesen of Booker Vineyard, along with Brewmaster’s Collective club member Paul Rios (with guest Christian Smith), created the winning blend that became “25.”

“The Anniversary Ale started as a small project, and it has turned into this cultural crossroads between our local winemakers and our brewers here at Firestone Walker,” Matt says. “We like to stand back and let them create the magic. It’s all about them using their winemaker sensibilities, their palates and experience to create something that a brewer wouldn’t.”

Once again, Matt is thrilled with the results. “This is a beer that truly rises to the occasion of our 25^th anniversary. It represents many of the core elements that have made our brewery what it is today: exceptionally talented people, collaboration, innovation, barrels, hard work, patience and beautiful beers.”
