How does Adidas Creators Club work. What are the main issues with the loyalty program. Why does the program fail to leverage customer engagement effectively. How can Adidas improve its rewards system.
Unveiling the Structure of Adidas Creators Club
Adidas, a global sportswear giant, has implemented a loyalty program called Creators Club. This initiative aims to reward customers for their engagement and purchases. However, upon closer examination, several issues emerge that hinder its effectiveness.
The Tiered System Explained
Creators Club employs a four-tier structure:
- Challenger (0 – 999 points)
- Playmaker (1,000 – 3,999 points)
- Gamechanger (4,000 – 9,999 points)
- Icon (10,000+ points)
Members earn points through various activities, including account creation, purchases, product reviews, and engagement with the Runtastic app. The point system is designed to encourage multiple forms of interaction with the brand.
Point Accumulation Methods
How can members earn points in the Adidas Creators Club? The program offers several avenues:
- Purchases: 10 points for every $1 spent
- Creating an account: One-time bonus
- Product reviews: Points for sharing experiences
- Runtastic app engagement: Points for runs and workouts
- Birthday surprise: Bonus points on a member’s special day
This diverse range of earning opportunities theoretically provides members with multiple ways to climb the tier ladder and access better rewards.
Analyzing the Rewards and Benefits
As members progress through the tiers, they unlock increasingly attractive benefits. But do these rewards truly incentivize loyalty?
Tier-Specific Perks
What benefits do members receive at each tier? The rewards structure includes:
- Early access to sales
- Member-exclusive products
- Free access to the Runtastic app (Playmaker tier and above)
- Discount vouchers
The Icon tier, the highest level, promises exclusive event invitations and VIP experiences. This includes access to Adidas sporting events, parties, and meet-and-greets with sponsored athletes.
The Ease of Reaching Icon Status
Is it challenging to reach the top tier in Adidas Creators Club? Surprisingly, no. A member can achieve Icon status by spending just $1,000 on Adidas products. For enthusiasts of the brand, this threshold may not be particularly high, potentially diluting the exclusivity of the top tier.
Critical Flaws in the Program Design
Despite its ambitious structure, Adidas Creators Club falls short in several key areas that are crucial for an effective loyalty program.
The Missing Earn History Feature
Why is earn history important in a loyalty program? It provides transparency and motivation. Creators Club lacks a crucial feature: the ability for members to view their point earning history. This oversight has several negative implications:
- Members cannot track individual contributions to their point balance
- It’s difficult to verify if points from specific activities (e.g., product reviews or runs) have been credited
- Members lose sight of their progress towards the next tier
This lack of visibility undermines the program’s ability to motivate members effectively.
Failure to Leverage the Endowed Progress Effect
The Endowed Progress Effect, a psychological phenomenon demonstrated by Nunes and Drèze (2006), shows that people are more likely to complete a goal if they perceive they’ve already made progress towards it. How does this apply to loyalty programs?
In a study involving a car wash loyalty program, customers who received a head start (two free stamps on a 10-stamp card) were nearly twice as likely to complete the program compared to those who needed to earn all eight stamps from scratch.
Adidas Creators Club fails to capitalize on this effect by not providing clear visibility into members’ progress. Without a comprehensive view of their point-earning activities, members may feel less motivated to engage further with the program.
Communication Shortcomings in Creators Club
Effective communication is vital for any loyalty program. Unfortunately, Adidas Creators Club falls short in this area as well.
Unclear Instructions for Point-Earning Activities
How can members effectively participate if they don’t understand the rules? Some point-earning opportunities lack clear instructions:
- The “Share what you wear” feature is not explained
- There’s no confirmation process for submitted reviews
- Members are left guessing whether their actions have successfully earned points
This lack of clarity can lead to frustration and disengagement from the program.
Excessive and Repetitive Notifications
While communication is important, Adidas seems to have gone overboard with notifications in Creators Club. Members are bombarded with repetitive messages:
- Tier achievement notifications appear every time a member logs in
- Pop-up messages about recent point earnings are displayed repeatedly
This excessive communication can become annoying and detract from the user experience, making the program feel amateurish and poorly designed.
The Runtastic App Integration: A Missed Opportunity
Adidas attempts to integrate its Runtastic app with the Creators Club program, but the execution leaves much to be desired.
Lack of Information and Instructions
Why is clear information crucial for program adoption? Without it, members may not take advantage of offered benefits. The Runtastic app integration suffers from several issues:
- No explanation of what Runtastic is or its benefits
- Absence of instructions on how to redeem the free app access
- Lack of guidance on inputting promo codes
This poor communication may result in members failing to utilize a potentially valuable benefit of the program.
Missed Engagement Opportunities
The Runtastic app could serve as a powerful tool for engaging Adidas customers and encouraging brand loyalty. However, the lack of clear integration and communication means this potential is largely untapped.
Improving Adidas Creators Club: Recommendations for Enhancement
To address the shortcomings of the Creators Club program, Adidas could implement several improvements:
Implement a Comprehensive Earn History Feature
How can Adidas enhance transparency in Creators Club? By introducing a detailed earn history feature that allows members to:
- View all point-earning activities
- Track progress towards the next tier
- Verify that points have been correctly credited
This addition would leverage the Endowed Progress Effect, motivating members to engage more actively with the program.
Enhance Communication and Instructions
Clear communication is key to program success. Adidas should:
- Provide detailed instructions for all point-earning activities
- Implement a confirmation system for actions like product reviews
- Reduce repetitive notifications and replace them with more meaningful, personalized communications
Improve Runtastic App Integration
To maximize the potential of the Runtastic app within Creators Club, Adidas should:
- Offer clear information about Runtastic and its benefits
- Provide step-by-step instructions for accessing free app features
- Create seamless integration between the app and the loyalty program
The Importance of User Experience in Loyalty Programs
Why is user experience crucial in loyalty programs? A well-designed program can significantly boost customer engagement and brand loyalty.
The Impact of Poor User Experience
The shortcomings in Adidas Creators Club highlight the potential negative impacts of a poorly executed loyalty program:
- Reduced engagement due to confusion or frustration
- Missed opportunities for building brand loyalty
- Potential damage to brand perception
By addressing these issues, Adidas could transform Creators Club into a powerful tool for customer retention and brand advocacy.
Learning from Successful Loyalty Programs
What can Adidas learn from other successful loyalty programs? Several key factors contribute to effective loyalty initiatives:
- Transparency in point earning and redemption
- Clear communication of benefits and how to access them
- Personalized experiences that make members feel valued
- Seamless integration across all brand touchpoints
By incorporating these elements, Adidas could significantly enhance the effectiveness of Creators Club.
The Future of Adidas Creators Club: Potential for Improvement
Despite its current shortcomings, Adidas Creators Club has the potential to become a powerful loyalty program with the right improvements.
Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Engagement
How can Adidas use technology to improve Creators Club? Several possibilities exist:
- Implement a mobile app dedicated to the loyalty program
- Use AI to provide personalized product recommendations based on member activity
- Integrate augmented reality features for trying on products virtually
- Create gamification elements to make point-earning more engaging
Expanding Partnerships and Experiences
To enhance the value proposition of Creators Club, Adidas could:
- Partner with other brands for cross-promotional opportunities
- Offer exclusive experiences beyond sporting events, such as fitness classes or wellness retreats
- Create a community platform for members to connect and share experiences
By implementing these enhancements, Adidas could transform Creators Club from a loyalty program fail into a industry-leading initiative that truly engages and rewards its most dedicated customers.
Adidas Creators Club – a loyalty program fail.
Creators Club is the loyalty program of global mega-brand Adidas. It is always surprising to engage with the loyalty programs of major brands and discover poor design, sloppy execution and ineffective communications, but with Creators Club we find yet another example.
Status tier design
Adidas have embraced a status tier design for Creators Club. Members earn points for a variety of activities, then progress to higher tiers to unlock benefits.
Members can earn points by creating an account, making a purchase (10 points for every $1), sharing what they wear and leaving a review. Adidas reward members on their birthday with surprise points, while through the Runtastic app members can earn bonus points for joining an Adidas runners event, completing a run (1 km = 1 point) or completing a workout (1 per day = 10 points new).
Creators Club encompasses four status tiers:
- Challenger: (0 – 999 points)
- Playmaker: (1,000 – 3,999 points)
- Gamechanger: (4,000 – 9,999 points)
- Icon: (10,000+ points)
This structure makes it surprisingly easy to access the higher tiers. Spending just $1,000 on gear will unlock Icon status, which doesn’t seem excessive for an Adidas fan.
Benefits improve by tier, and include early access to sales, member-exclusive products, free access to Runtastic app and discount vouchers. The real fun starts at Icon, with Adidas promising ‘special events: invitations and tickets to the most exclusive adidas sporting events, parties and more. From free concerts and the biggest games to meet-and-greets with adidas athletes—you’re the real VIP.’
Lack of earn history
With all those opportunities to earn points, Adidas have forgotten to include a critical feature in the member account; the ability to view earn history. Members can see their total points balance, and how many points they need to access the next tier, but there is no opportunity to determine what the balance is comprised of. Is the join bonus in there? Were the points for the Ultraboost DNA shoes (Core Black/Cloud White/Gold Metallic) added? How about that 10km run? This lack of visibility makes it very difficult for the member to understand how they are progressing toward the next tier, and more importantly, the contribution each of their actions is making.
Status tier programs are perfectly designed to harness the Endowed Progress Effect. This was demonstrated by Nunes and Drèze (2006) [1] in a research study which involved a stamp card loyalty program at a car wash. Members could earn a free wash by collecting stamps on their loyalty card. Nunes and Drèze divided participants into two groups; for the first group, members needed to collect ten stamps, but the card already had two ‘free’ stamps on it. The second group were only required to collect eight stamps but did not receive any free stamps. Thus, both groups required eight stamps to claim their free wash. The first group with two ‘free’ stamps recorded a reward redemption rate of 34 per cent and came back more often. The second group saw a redemption rate of just 19 per cent. Thus, members who perceived they were progressing toward a goal felt more compelled to complete the journey.
Adidas fails to take advantage of the Endowed Progress Effect by not ensuring members can view their actions which have contributed to points earn, and hence to their progression.
Poor communications
In addition, some of the points earn options lack instructions and clear communication. For example, how does a member ‘Share what you wear?’ exactly. When they write a review, how do they know if the review has been posted and the points successfully earned? Basic instructions and notifications are absent.
When Adidas does provide notifications, they appear far too often. For example, each time a member signs in to their account, they are reminded of the most recent tier they have achieved. For example, ‘YOU NAILED IT – YOU’VE BECOME A GAMECHANGER,’ appears each time the member signs in when at that status level. Similar repetitive pop-up messages appear when accessing other areas of the website, such as the Orders page; ‘CONGRATS! +1560 PTS with last order’. It makes the whole experience appear excessively amateurish, like an early 2000’s website programmer who has just discovered pop-ups, but hasn’t yet figured out how to turn them off.
Other communication fails include the Runtastic app. Members who achieve Playmaker status or above gain free app access as a reward. But what is Runtastic? Adidas must assume members are already well informed, because no information about Runtastic appears on the website. When the free promo code is provided, there are no instructions on how to input the code into Runtastic to unlock the free period. This requires navigating to the Runtastic website to track down the process, a frustrating experience.
These basic communication errors raise suspicions that no one in a position of influence within Adidas has had a good play with Creators Club. Are they aware of these basic UX fails? Have they viewed their program through the eyes of their own members?
Icon tier an enigma
The ultimate goal, Icon status, is a true enigma. ‘Invitations and tickets to the most exclusive adidas sporting events, parties and more,’ sounds amazing, but what does it mean? There is no history of events on the Adidas website to understand what exclusive delights members have enjoyed in the past. A quick Google search finds no evidence of members who have managed to access any of these exclusive events, or even been invited. As the ultimate prize, members may perceive it to be little more than a hollow promise, which makes the whole idea of achieving Icon status quite unmotivating indeed.
Executing such an event and party series globally would be very challenging and expensive, especially at a scale that would satisfy ardent fans. It is an ambitious vision to deliver this at scale. It is too ambitious, perhaps?
Conclusion
Adidas is better than this, with a wonderful heritage and legions of adoring fans. It is time to turn those exquisite design skills onto Creators Club and make this loyalty program a true Superstar.

Adidas Ups Loyalty Game with Membership App ‘Creators Club’
Called Creators Club, the new loyalty programme sits within the brand’s AI-powered shopping app (launched in November 2017), which features personalised recommendations and content.
Based on points, it’s organised into four tiers. Each level comes with its own set of benefits, encouraging users to rise through the ranks to unlock additional rewards.
The four tiers are:
- Challenger (0-999 points): Limited editions, personalised content, and an overview of all purchases made, regardless of the channel.
- Playmaker (1,000-3,999 points): Exclusive customisation tools, special offers and a birthday present.
- Gamechanger (4,000-11,999): Free personalisation, early access to drops and priority customer service, including ‘Skip the Line’ and a dedicated support number.
- Icon (12,000+): Access to personalised training and nutrition apps, invites to special events, and high-priority access to sneaker drops.
Turning the traditional rewards concept on its head, a user’s ranking isn’t solely based on purchase, but also considers interaction – such as attending events and participating in the community. For example, writing a review equates to 50 points, while making a purchase translates into 10 points for every $1 spent.
Fuelling Adidas’s omnichannel focus, after signing up, each user is equipped with a unique ‘Creator ID’, enabling the brand to identify consumers at every touchpoint – a pre-requisite for contextual marketing and customised in-store experiences. More than half of consumers in the US and the UK (56% and 54% respectively) feel more loyal to brands that show a deep understanding of their preferences and priorities (Adobe, 2018).
Currently only available in the US (global rollout is planned for 2019), users sign up via the app, website or in-store. See also Supercharged Loyalty Schemes and Beyond Points & Plastic.

How Adidas and ThredUp are prolonging the life of shoes and apparel
Shoemaker Adidas is launching its Choose to Give Back program that lets people send used products — apparel, accessories and sports gear such as running shoes and soccer jerseys — from any brand back to the company to be reused or resold on an online marketplace. The program will be supported by ThredUp’s Resale-as-a-Service (RaaS) platform and expertise.
ThredUp, known as a leader in the resale space, has been building out RaaS since 2018. Its first client was clothing maker and retailer Reformation. Since then, its client list, which includes retailers and apparel manufacturers, has grown to over 20 companies. Other clients include Gap, Madewell and Abercrombie & Fitch.
“Adidas’s new program leverages the resale engine we’ve built to enable their customers to easily extend the life of their clothes,” wrote Pooja Sethi, senior vice president and general manager of RaaS at ThredUp, in emailed responses to questions for this story. “Ultimately, this program is designed to extend the life of gear, grow the reuse market and end plastic waste.”
We want to ensure this process is as seamless as possible before scaling up.
The program was launched Oct. 7 within the Adidas Creators Club app, which is free to join. The company plans to begin expanding the program more widely online and in stores across the United States in early 2022. It has not shared an exact date for the extended launch.
“We worked closely with the Adidas team to build a customized, scalable resale program to help their customers easily extend the life of their clothes, and we look forward to expanding the program together,” Sethi said.
Here’s how the program currently works for U.S. users of the Adidas Creators Club: Through the app, they can generate a prepaid shipping label, fill a shippable box with apparel, shoes and accessories from any brand, and ship it to ThredUp for free. When ThredUp receives an item from a customer, the resale company processes, prices, photographs and lists accepted items online for resale on its online marketplace.
Adidas noted that customers can send in shoes, apparel and accessories, no matter the brand or condition. “Products in good condition are resold through ThredUP, while the rest will go through ThredUP’s network of textile reuse partners,” explained Katja Schreiber, Adidas senior vice president of sustainability, via emailed responses to questions for this story.
Adidas rewards customers for items that meet certain quality standards. During this trial period, customers will receive up to 200 Creators Club points or Adidas vouchers based on the quantity and quality of items they return. Once a customer reaches 1,000 Creators Club points, they gain access to exclusive deals, birthday gifts and free training resources.
Adidas is using this first phase of the program rollout as a time to iron out any kinks related to the process and evaluating incentives to deliver the best experience for customers.
“We want to ensure this process is as seamless as possible before scaling up,” Schreiber said. “In testing this program, we will discover the best ways to grow and promote the reuse market, with the goal of preventing some of the environmental impacts associated with making products in the first place.”

Summary
Today Runtastic, one of the leading companies in the digital health and fitness products and services industry, and parent company adidas, the largest player in the sports goods industry, have introduced new adidas Running and adidas Training apps to reward athletes directly for completing workouts and runs.
Details
The Run For The Oceans Campaign, which ended in June 2019 and brought together 2.2 million athletes worldwide, helped raise $ 1.5 million to tackle plastic pollution in oceans and inspired Runtastic and adidas to take the next step in their mission to unite sports fans and fitness around the world and expanding their athletic capabilities. The move is the app that rewards athletes with exclusive privileges and special offers for their athletic performance.In line with the core belief of both companies – Sport gives us the power to change lives – the apps, renamed adidas Running and adidas Training, will link directly to adidas’ loyalty program to provide added incentive to exercise.
Awards for Athletes with a Passion for Sport
The adidas free loyalty program is currently available in the US, UK and recently launched in Germany as Creators Club .For several weeks, the Creators Club program will be available on the adidas Runtastic apps in those countries, so every kilometer covered with the adidas Running app and every workout done with the adidas Training app will be rewarded with points that give you access to exciting benefits such as early access to adidas products, special offers and promotions, and access to exclusive events. Additional bonuses will be added over time.
Global Advantage
Once athletes become part of the Creators Club loyalty program in the adidas Running or Training app, they begin to collect points for every kilometer and every workout completed to advance to the next level in the Creators Club loyalty program. * For a more enjoyable experience, a single account will soon be available for all applications and platforms. In addition to a huge global online community, adidas and Runtastic bring offline sports and fitness fans together through local communities such as adidas Runners in over 60 cities around the world.
Ideal moment for a new brand
As Runtastic and adidas have become even closer to each other through the renewed user experience and the introduction of rewards, they decided to reflect this in the brand: from today all Runtastic communication channels will be under the name adidas Runtastic, to highlight the close relationship between the two brands. For a seamless user experience, the two main apps will be renamed from Runtastic and Results to adidas Running by Runtastic and adidas Training by Runtastic .
With the introduction of a new design, the iconic blue Runtastic look will give way to a bold new look: a fusion of fresh turquoise, adidas black and white as a neutral base. In the future, the design will continue to be updated to make the application more convenient to use. From now on, users will instantly recognize their favorite running and workout apps thanks to the adidas’ iconic 3-Stripes logo.

adidas entered the market in the late 1940s and has since gained worldwide popularity. Today the company offers high quality sportswear, footwear and accessories, as well as develops its loyalty program. Each level of adidas Club membership unlocks access to new discounts and bonuses.
How to become a member of the loyalty program
The adidas Creators Club loyalty program replaces the adidas Universe discount card. If you have saved your Universe plastic card, you can transfer it to the “Wallet” application – it will be updated, but all accumulated points are saved. How to get a discount on adidas goods, as well as club privileges, read below.
To become a member of the program, you must register:
- at adidas website
- in the official adidas mobile app
- in the store at the checkout;
- in the “Wallet” application;
- in the adidas Running by Runstatic and adidas Training by Runstatic training apps.
To register in the loyalty program, you need to fill out a short form – indicate your full name, date of birth, phone number and e-mail address. Or log in through social networks.
Registration in the Creators Club through the Wallet application is faster – you just need to issue a card. Wallet users fill in their data once – only when registering in the application.
To access adidas discounts and promotions in Wallet:
- go to the directory in the application;
- find adidas discount card through catalog search;
- tap on “Issue a new card”;
- agree to the terms of the loyalty program.
In the past, joining the adidas Club required an adidas Universe card to register and register, but is now being replaced by the adidas Creators Club mobile card. adidas does not issue plastic cards when registering in the bonus program, and members of the Universe program are automatically transferred to the Creators Club program – the status and bonus balance are preserved.
How the loyalty program works
Terms of crediting points
The adidas Creators Club loyalty program gives regular customers access to discounts and personalized offers. You can get bonus points for different activities:
- 1000 points for creating a Creators Club account and completing a profile;
- One bonus point for each ruble spent in an offline or online store, points are awarded within 7 days;
- 500 points for a review of a purchased product;
- 750 points for participation in adidas Runners;
- 20 points per kilometer when registering a run with the adidas Running by Runstatic app;
- 75 points per training day with adidas Training by Runstatic app
- gift points for your birthday – the number will be a surprise.
It is easy to keep track of the accumulated balance of points in the “Wallet” application. On the adidas discount card screen, users can access not only the card number, but also points, current promotions and store discounts. In addition, in the Wallet message center, you can be the first to know about new special offers. And also a mobile card in the Wallet will always be at hand – among the discount cards of other favorite stores.
adidas Creators Club Levels: How Discount Calculated
Discount on adidas products depends on the level of the member in the program, that is, the number of bonus points on his account:
- Challenger (0 – 7499 points) – 0% discount;
- Playmaker (7500-14999 points) – 5% off;
- Game-Changer (15000-44999 points) – 10% discount;
- Icon (over 45,000 points) – 20% discount.
The discount is permanent, it is valid for purchases in online and offline adidas stores. In addition, membership in the loyalty program allows, depending on the level, to receive:
- discounts with limited validity period or condition of application;
- early access to selected merchandise and sales;
- priority access to popular products;
- Premium subscription to Runstatic;
- the opportunity to personalize products free of charge, for example, apply a text or image of your choice;
- invitations to private company events;
- and much more.
Points are active 365 days from the date they were credited to the card, which is why a constant activity is required from the buyer. A year after reaching a new level, a retraining is carried out. If by this time the balance of points has dropped and does not correspond to the level in the program, the user’s status changes.
You can check the balance of points on the card, as well as find out more detailed conditions for retraining, on the adidas official website.
How to use the discount when shopping on the site
To receive a discount on a discount card, a client can:
- present your adidas Universe card or adidas Creator Club mobile card from the store application, as well as enter the card number in a special field on the website;
- show the adidas card on the smartphone screen from the “Wallet” application or enter the number on the website;
- Apply a personal bonus coupon when shopping through the app or online store – coupons are available in your personal account.
The card discount cannot be used for gift cards and vouchers, adidas Yezzy brand products or certain other products. A complete list is available on the official website of the company. The discount cannot be combined with other special offers, promotional codes or promotions. When buying, you can choose the most profitable option – use a card or a special offer.
adidas App
The adidas Mobile App gives you access to an extensive product catalog and all the adidas Creators Club benefits.In the application you can:
- make purchases;
- control your level in the program and bonus balance;
- track purchase history;
- Leave photos and reviews to receive additional bonuses.
The adidas Creators Club loyalty program is about reaching new levels and receiving awards, as well as competing with yourself. Bonuses are awarded not only for purchases, but also for sports, so it is easy for adidas club members to combine profitable purchases and favorite workouts.
adidas miCoach | Itransition
Situation
Our client – adidas is one of the most renowned manufacturers of sportswear and equipment for both amateur and professional athletes in the world.
The company is actively developing innovative areas, such as the production of unparalleled devices adidas miCoach , which allow tracking and keeping records of physical activity, as well as the development of accompanying software.
The adidas miCoach product family includes several gadgets: Speed Cell, Pacer Bundle, and Heart Rate Monitor. These devices collect various statistics about the user’s physical activity, including movement speed, number of steps and calories burned, exercise time, distance traveled and heart rate. The devices connect to a PC / Mac as well as an Ipod / iPhone to transfer the collected data to the miCoach.com portal. The back-end web solution stores data, analyzes results and allows you to create individual training plans, helping to achieve your goals. In other words, users get a professional virtual trainer at their disposal.
The miCoach device management desktop application was originally developed by a third-party software vendor. The design left a lot to be desired, while the application itself was inconvenient to use and had low performance due to certain technological limitations.
adidas needed an end-to-end solution to meet modern technological requirements and end-user expectations.Adidas management decided to enhance the existing desktop application, simplifying the process of synchronizing devices with the web portal, which ultimately should increase sales of miCoach devices. For these purposes, the customer turned to Itransition, a company with extensive experience in the development of software for smart gadgets.
Difficulty
One of the most problematic aspects of working with a legacy application was the lack of any supporting documentation.The Itransition team had to study the source code of an existing desktop application in order to understand the mechanisms of functional interaction of its constituent components. We have decompiled a Java application and analyzed its business logic and low-level communication algorithms.
