sports SMM is like a minefield
They carefully prepare for matches, fight with colleagues from rival clubs and lose their jobs after high-profile fiascos. These are not trainers, but SMM specialists, and they could get into trouble much less often if they followed three simple rules …
Currently, there is not a single serious football club that does not have accounts in the main social networks. Social media has become a new channel for constant interaction with the audience.
This is an opportunity to attract new fans and warm up the audience before important matches, influencing, among other things, ticket revenue and broadcast popularity. At first glance, the story seems absolutely win-win. You don’t have to pay for accounts, while the leading clubs have a significant social base that allows you not to invest in promotion. But time after time, the merciless Russian SMM for some reason shoots either from a cannon at sparrows, or even in its own foot. It seems that the desperate pursuit of the viral effect is to blame.
Lille and Turkey attacking midfielder Yusuf Yazici has joined CSKA. Rookie introduction is a whole separate genre in sports SMM. Those in charge of army social media probably had to have an urgent brainstorming session. In search of “hype” associations, “Natasha” confidently withstood competition from the Janissaries, Suleiman the Magnificent and the singer Tarkan. As a result, the bet was made on the imitation of correspondence between the club’s breeders and the player.
They write one message after another, the football player does not answer until the crown argument appears: “Yusuf, this is Russia, we have a lot of Natasha here.” “Five minutes, I’m on my way,” replies the happy pseudo-Yazici.

The resonance was serious. The soreness of this topic was revealed by the football world championship held in Russia. Then the excessive friendliness of some girls towards foreign fans became the reason for the whole gender battles in social networks. But the wildest thing in army history is that the club media not only insulted the Russians and offended the Turks, but also humiliated their own team. After all, it turns out from the video that the army team has nothing else to attract a talented football player, except for affordable girls with low social responsibility. CSKA apologized and promised to fire the perpetrators, but the sediment will remain for a long time.
Such SMM has long become the norm. A little over a year ago, football club Baltika from Kaliningrad presented their newcomer only a little less epicly.
The club’s social networks wrote: “According to official data, “Novichok” was found in the body of the Baltika football club. The entry was accompanied by a photo of the Charite clinic, where a well-known blogger was undergoing treatment at that moment.
“A fool was discovered in the PR service of Baltika,” one of the news commentators wrote on a sports website. Perhaps this message expressed the feeling of the majority, although even harsher words were heard from the fans of the patient of the German clinic. The record from the club chronicle in social networks was soon deleted.
Creative on the theme of a variety of “strawberries” for the Russian sports SMM is also not new. Take, for example, the notorious Traktor hockey club media star Sonya Gudim, who promised to interview the players of her team naked if they win the Gagarin Cup. It is difficult to say whether such a prospect motivated or demotivated the hockey players, but the cup has not yet been given to them. Last year, Sonya Gudim decided to go into politics and entered the top three of one of the parties in the elections to the State Duma.
However, this time there were no such extravagant promises to voters. This is probably why the Green Alternative failed miserably.

Football “Spartak” in social networks most often jokes just not funny, but sometimes he jumps above his head. The most famous case occurred in 2018, when defender Georgy Jikia was entrusted to steer the club Twitter. The football player took a picture of the Brazilian legionnaires Luis Adriano and Fernando at the training camp in the UAE, signing the photo: “Look how the chocolates melt in the sun.” This time, the resonance took on an international scale, and the ubiquitous human rights organization FARE took up the cause. Fortunately, the club managed to get off with an apology.
Of course, there are major punctures outside of Russia. For example, the head of SMM at the Brazilian club Flamengo lost his job due to the publication of a photo with players from an airplane after a victorious match in the Libertadores Cup.
The fact is that all the players there were without masks. Shortly after returning, 16 patients with COVID-19 were found in the team, and she had to ask the league to postpone matches. And yet, Russian scandals have one peculiarity. They are much more likely to arise from the neglect of those things that are usually referred to as “political correctness” or elementary tact.
Moreover, not only club media, but also professional media get into stupid stories. So, the Sport FM radio station distinguished itself by publishing a photo of the ex-Spartak coach Massimo Carrera with a replaced sticker in his hands, on which it was written: “I killed two women, I will kill Spartak.” The reason was a tragic accident in which a specialist knocked down two women. The social media manager thought it was a great topic for jokes and, of course, was fired.

Another time, the Match TV channel published on social networks an image of MMA fighter Said-Khamzat Avkhadov with a quote: “You know, did Hitler torture people? And I also tortured myself.
” Not the most appropriate phrase concerned a record weight cut of 26 kg, but after pulling it out of context, it turned out especially wild.
Of course, it is impossible to smear all Russian SMM specialists with the same paint. Sometimes they get both high-quality creative and successful trolling. For example, a few years ago, FC Yenisei also decided to depict a dialogue between club breeders and a newcomer to the team. The club’s Twitter asked the question: “Friends, how to stop Artyom Dzyuba from @zenit_spb in the new season in the RFPL?” The answer came from the account of the Serbian defender Rade Dugalic: “I can help.” These words were accompanied by a photograph in which a football player grabs a Zenit striker by the face in a fight. “Great! The contract is for 2 years, ”the Yenisei tweeter writes. “Deal,” the footballer agrees.
FC Rubin is famous for its beautiful, bright and at the same time non-scandalous work in social networks. The club recently released another video for the song Last Christmas.
The head coach and players sing, and the video maker finds a reason for many references, both football and cultural. But perhaps the most touching work was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Leonid Slutsky. The whole plot, which plays on the details of the specialist’s biography, and individual numbers, in which the players parodied pop stars, turned out to be bright.
However, even in a sharper genre, it is quite possible to do without insults that go beyond the football theme and the framework of generally accepted morality. For example, after the victory over Zenit, Rubin caught the moment where the blue-white-blue player bowed to an advertisement for a well-known company. The photo was accompanied by the slogan: “Not all dreams come true.”
Photo: Maksim Konstantinov/globallookpress.com
In turn, the Zenit media in recent years have notably trolled Spartak. For example, after the victory of the Italian national team at the Euro under the leadership of the ex-coach of Zenit Roberto Mancini, the red-and-whites published an image of dominoes falling and pushing each other, and the first of them was associated with the victory of Spartak over Zenit in 2017 with a score of 3:1.
The caption read: “Football is fun. Don’t forget to thank us later.” Zenit immediately reacted with a photograph of the scoreboard, which recorded the winning score of the blue-white-blue match with Spartak: 5:1. “We think Mancini remembers this game better from 2017,” wrote the masters of media affairs. And last year, the St. Petersburg club presented even more beautiful material for such jokes, defeating Spartak with a score of 7:1.
SMM is a new tool. Not everyone has learned how to use it yet. Therefore, we enclose a simple safety instruction. Firstly, in the pursuit of hype, any references to the theme of the Great Patriotic War and related events should be carefully avoided. Secondly, before publishing, you need to make sure that the post does not offend any social group. This includes jokes about skin color, religion, as well as gender and national stereotypes. Death and disease are not a good subject for jokes. And, of course, the publication should not be offensive in relation to a particular person.
