5 points and a lacrosse goal – Michkov powerfully finished the season. Before the draft he is better than Panarin and Tarasenko – About the KHL – Blogs
The main Russian junior finished his first senior season – and it turned out to be intense: injury at the summer tournament, recovery, MHL, VHL, SKA, loan to Sochi, the first scandals. Michkov failed to find out what the playoffs are at this level – Sochi turned off the fight even before he arrived, but Matvey still managed to close the regular season beautifully.
In the last match he hit 5 points – the first in the history of the club, and scored his only goal in lacrosse style.
Michkov has been fond of this feint for a long time – he became famous with it
Although there is a nuance: the striker played such an extravaganza against Kunlun, which this year also did not really aim for the playoffs. The calendar planners were amazingly insightful, putting the two worst teams of the season on the final day. But it should be noted that it turned out even livelier than some games, where questions about places and the advantage of the site were decided.
Of course, Michkov’s goal was the highlight of the evening – already in the third minute he got the puck behind the net, put it on the hook – and brought it over the ribbon.
It seems that people in Mytishchi do not use the Internet very often: lacrosse-style goals are Michkov’s most famous feature, which Kunlun’s defenders and goalkeeper should have known about. He scored like this in juniors at the Moscow Championship and the U18 World Championship, in the Youth League (including the victory in the Kharlamov Cup final) and even for the adult Russian team. It was clear that someday he would score like this in the KHL.
Moreover, Matvey himself explains such goals not by a desire to show off, but by a playing necessity. “The point is not even that it was somehow beautiful, but that this goal was important for the team, since in the end it became victorious – this is doubly pleasant. The bottom line is that when you are behind the gate, then lacrosse is the shortest way to score a goal, ”he said in an interview with R-Sport in the spring.
But it should be noted that during this season Michkov improved not only as a sniper, but also as an assistant. He has more assists in the regular season than goals – but all this is thanks to the last match. In addition to his goal, he took part in four attacks of partners – including the one that led Artur Tyanulin to a hat-trick.
Ahead of Michkov – draft and, apparently, MHL
With such a performance, the striker reminded himself well before the draft – in the summer, NHL clubs will seriously puzzle over whether or not to take Michkov. It is clear that he will not leave under the first number – Connor Bedard finally staked out this place for himself (114 points in 45 matches of the Western Hockey League, 2023 MFM MVP with 23 points).
Matvey certainly has advantages over his competitors – for example, at the age of 18 he showed that he can play against adult opponents, and not score points in youth teams. But there is also a clear disadvantage, due to which he may well fly out even from the top 10 draft pick – his contract with SKA, which will end only in 2026.
And, of course, they would like to see him across the ocean earlier. KHL TV commentator Anton Vasyatin in his telegram channel closely followed the dynamics of Michkov’s scoring and noticed that he was the most productive player in the KHL in his pre-draft year – he played the regular season even better than Panarin and Tarasenko.
What’s more embarrassing is that the NHL Draft is only in 4 months, by that time his success will be erased from memory, but the highlights of competitors will be much fresher. But it is possible that the season has not ended for Matvey today: the youth team of Sochi – the Stupinsky Captain – is now fighting for the play-in for participation in the Kharlamov Cup – and Michkov has a chance for a sensation if he drags the team as far as possible into the play -off.
