Big Ten Lacrosse: Conference Uniform Rankings
Big Ten lacrosse is back which means crazy uniform reveals and impressive team issued gear drops. For those of you who appreciate lacrosse gear and uniforms, I have the perfect article for you.
Each week I will rank the uniforms and gear from conferences all across college lacrosse. Every level, every uniform, and all the little details in order to crown each conference with a winner of which team has the most drip.
Starting off this series will be the Big Ten. The Big Ten is comprised of six D1 powerhouse teams in Ohio State, Michigan, Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Penn State, and Rutgers.
Just looking at some of these schools and their attention to athletic detail and design, I think it goes without saying that these are some of the often most impressive uniforms and gear amongst all of college lacrosse. This year the race for best dressed begins now.

6.
Rutgers
Rutgers is the only Adidas uniform team on this list. I think we can all remember the insanely tight fitting ugly Adidas jerseys of the past.
However, Adidas has made some major improvements in their jerseys over the past few years. Rutgers seems to be rocking red and white jerseys for the year which do have some pop to their look.
Fired up for this one!#RUMLax and Lehigh are now underway in NCAA Tournament action.

There are just a few things about the uniforms that grabbed the bottom spot on this list. Not a fan of the opposite color stitching that goes across the jersey. For example, the white uniforms have visible red stitching all across the jersey as a design element. The other big thing about these uniforms that I’m not in love with is the font choice and proximity to the collar of the uniform.
Again, everyone is going to have their own preferences, but this is just my quick take on the look.
The #RUMLax roster for the spring is finalized with the official addition of Brian Cameron as a transfer from UNC!

5. Penn State
Penn State is another team that really tends to go with a classic look each season. While some may appreciate this consistency year in and year out, I personally would love to see Penn State spice it up a bit with possibly a new alternate uniform.
Their classic white uniforms are the only ones that I’ve seen so far for this season, and they are very much that, classic. Great look that really wraps together the iconic Penn State feel. I think the all white uniforms with the white helmet will be a cool icey look this season.

Big fan of their Maverik Rome all white with blue accent gloves but not as much of a fan of their M5 gloves as they just have a bit too much color in the wrong areas for my liking. Not saying they are a bad look, but the all white Rome gloves are surely their cleanest look.

4. Maryland
This past weekend we saw Maryland take on High Point which was quite an awesome uniform matchup between these two teams. Maryland has dropped all their uniform/gear looks and combinations for the season unlike a lot of other teams . These include red, white, and black jersey and short combos.

While the white is a great classic look and the black kit is a clean alternative look, I must say that the red uniforms catch my eye the most. Under Armour did a great job with these and I love the very realistic looking Maryland flag along the trim of each arm and the bottom of each side of the shorts.
The red jersey, white short, and white helmet combination is also one that’s growing on me. Whatever combination Maryland rocks this year I guarantee that the Terps will be looking clean with any of these options.
On the gear side Maryland is also a Maverik school and went with a very flashy type look. Solid Maryland red Maverik gloves really stand out in these uniform combinations. I appreciate the one color flare that really ties the whole outfit together.

3. Michigan
As I mentioned earlier the Big Ten is known for pretty classic jerseys with a sharp look. Michigan is a perfect example of this timeless look in their jersey designs.
This past weekend we saw Michigan take on Bellarmine rocking their brand new white uniforms. These are a simple yet elegant looking uniform featuring blue and maize perfectly sized lettering and numbers. On the back of the jerseys is a very detailed two color Michigan “M” which one can really appreciate.
I would love to talk about the other kits that Michigan has worn in years past, but considering these are new white uniforms only time will tell if their navy and maize kits get a tune up as well.

Michigan is a Maverik school and has some pretty sharp looking gear to go along with their uniforms. Their gloves in particular are great with a navy blue center and white outers along with an almost oversized awesome looking Michigan “M”. Again, these aren’t a crazy flashy look but instead a super well executed classic look that you just can’t go wrong with.

2. Ohio State
Ohio State is always a front runner in uniform design and attention to detail. While I’m sure we haven’t seen all of the Ohio State uniform options for the year yet, the ones that we have seen in years past are pretty awesome.
This past weekend we got to see Ohio State take on Detroit Mercy in which Ohio State was rocking their classic sleeveless Nike uniforms. White being the main color with some well placed red accents along the top of the jersey and lettering. Big fan of the letters being white with a red outline as it gives the uniform just a bit of a sharper look.

However, I feel a bit undecided on sleeveless uniforms this year. Are they still in style or are they a fad that should be long gone? Let me know your thoughts.
As of now, I feel like well designed sleeveless jerseys like these look sharp but the margin of error in rocking a sleeveless uniform is much smaller when compared to classic jerseys.
Also pictured on the Ohio State Men’s Lacrosse Instagram is their blackout/dark grey uniforms. These things look awesome and will be a great alternative for the year as they always are.

1. JOhns Hopkins
Full disclosure, I’ve always been a big fan of Hopkins and their uniform game. However, this year they seem to be even further ahead than the rest of Big Ten lacrosse in the uniform game.
Most teams in the conference will choose to go with a simple classic look from their jersey provider while Hopkins went with a slightly more futuristic look this season.
Their Under Armour uniforms feature the classic Hopkins blue as the main color with white numbers. Along the sleeve is an American flag and three white and black lines to give the jersey all the more flair. The collar of these uniforms is white but features a different design with a sharper more aggressive look as you may be able to see in uniform photos.
On the gear side their STX Surgeon RZR gloves add a great aspect to their overall look with another very modern/possibly even futuristic look.

Showmanship has become such an integral part of athletics. Yes, it’s moreso about the players, and how far your team can go; but how you look while doing it is a huge attraction to the fanbase. Nike, Under Armor, Warrior, New Balance, etc. are all out here trying to put together the most elite product for players to sport out on the field in attempt to set precedence when it comes to fashion in lacrosse. We put together a list of our top 15 all-time lacrosse jerseys, and we think you’re going to like what you see…
15. ST JOHN’S SKYLINE UNI
The Johnnies snuck into our 15th spot with these Skyline jerseys. The set overall is pretty standard – red on red – but the skyline pattern around the bicep with the dark navy blue shoulder propelled these unis onto our all-time list. There’s really not much too them, but who doesn’t love a city skyline at night? It’s a truly simple incorporation of something regionally nostalgic, but it’s extremely effective.
14. LA RIPTIDE
Simply put, this squad has a great color combination and logo. The scheme here holds very similar to the Miami Dolphins in the NFL – a tealish-aqua blue contrasting a marine-orange, with white accents and an aquatic animal logo – in this case a shark. This is a set that really works, and is one of our favorite ensembles the sport has seen thus far. New Balance really went for it here, and they hit the nail on the head.
13. UNC 2022 NIKE HOME JERSEYS
Maybe we’re suffering from some recency bias, but there’s just something about Carolina blue and lacrosse that seems like the perfect combination. These jerseys take the combo to the next level. Sporting the very color their name brought to sports, UNC matches the Carolina blue with matte black helmets. But, it’s not just the colorway that puts these jerseys on our list, it’s the minute details. The argyle stripes down the sides of both the tops and the shorts are a great touch, but the main ingredient here is the blown up Rameses the Ram highlighted on the back of the jersey. The way the school’s mascot is implemented into their uni is something that isn’t often done, and it was executed in a subtle, but effective way – and puts these in our #13 spot.
12. 2020 NEW YORK RIPTIDE HEALTHCARE HEROES
Sometimes, we have to sing for the unsung heroes. The New York Riptide did just that with their “Healthcare Heroes” get up. The Healthcare workers who stayed the course and didn’t miss a day serving the public during the COVID-19 pandemic were overworked and underappreciated, so the NY Riptide gave them a shout out with these outfits; modeling a set of scrubs, with a stethoscope around the neck and other various medical tools in a left-chest pocket. This is complimented by an orange cape depicted on the back of the jersey to really communicate the “hero” sentiment. Caps off to the Riptide on these.
11. 2017 SALISBURY ALL-GOLD
We’re all for a unique look in this world, and that’s what these Salisbury jerseys bring. Gold is a treasure, and the Gulls took that saying and ran with it with these New Balance jerseys. The Gold and Maroon colorway is unlike any other team in this space, and it is an elite look for an elite D3 program.
10. 2013 HOFSTRA WOUNDED WARRIOR
At 10, we have another ovation – this time for the heroes that protect our country. Hofstra and Warrior partnered to create the “Wounded Warrior” uniform, a camo based jersey blended with accents of the Hofstra yellow and blue. They dove full into the military theme, and somehow, the Hofstra colors work really well against the standard camo. Not only a great sentiment brought to the field, but also a great style.
9. 2012 HOPKINS RETRO
The first “retro” jersey to make our list, Hopkins and Nike came together to create something incredible. This jersey looks almost as retro as it gets, while still holding a modern appeal. Hopkins jerseys are also famous for sporting the Carolina blue, but these bring forward a much more subtle colorway, using white and black as the main components, and only using the Carolina blue for accents. The best touch though, in our opinion, is in the yellow that gets featured in the gloves and arm pads – the flashiness of the yellow compliments the subtlty of the Carolina blue, making it pop, while also adding to the retro look. These are a chef’s kiss.
8. MARYLAND BLACK OPS AND WHITE OPS
Maybe this is cheating, but this uni-line has two parts – The black-ops and white-ops that Maryland introduced in 2013. Maryland really elevated the blackout/whiteout look by incorporating the Terapin flag in the design. The details of the flag are blown up and added into the shorts and shoulders as gray accents, which contrast the black and white outs subtly and effectively. Done properly, the all-black and all-white look is extremely clean and sleek. UA and Maryland accomplished exactly that with these jerseys.
7. 2014 TUFTS JUMBOS WHITE AND BROWN
At number 7 we have one of the weirdest color combinations in sports, period. These 2014 Tufts jerseys sport white and brown as the main components, with Carolina blue accents. These unis also rep the school’s mascot, Jumbo the Elephant, with the word “JUMBOS” across the chest, and the elephant on each side of the helmet. Something about the brown and Carolina blue combo really works. It’s weird, but it’s fresh, and we’re digging it. Kudos to Nike for putting these masterpieces together.
6. 2004 SYRACUSE ALL ORANGE
At the 6th spot we have our first Syracuse appearance – and this look is just a lacrosse staple. Not only does this get up highlight the famous orange of the Orange themselves, it is the first time a team really rocked the same color head to toe in the sport of lacrosse. This set a precedent for some color rush uniforms, and changed the style out on the field moving forward. Syracuse frequently sets trends, and their first appearance on our list is all the way up at #6. Where else will they land above here?
5. 2021 FLORIDA GATORS CLUB LACROSSE
This pick might shock some people being that Florida only has a club team, but we had to pull these Gator get ups into our list. The colorway is similar to ‘Cuse’s retros, but they use the royal blue for the entirety of the base and it comes together extremely well. The orange accents against the royal blue look great, and topped off with the orange helmet, these bad boys climbed right into our top 5. Hopefully Florida can figure out a way to bring in another women’s sport and balance out their parity so we can see these unis at the elite level, because Nike was really in their bag with these ones.
4. 2012 MARYLAND PRIDE
Maryland cracks our top 5 in their second appearance on this list, coming in at #4 for their 2012 pride jerseys. The Maryland flag being incorporated into the uniform is just a top-tier look. The unique yellow, black, red and white designs against the black base of the uniform has fresh written all over it. The distorted red and gray camo in the numbers adds more personality as well. If we could choose a uniform to be walking out on the field with, these would be a top choice; and not just because the Terps are really, really good.
3. 2012 SYRACUSE TOMAHAWK RETRO (FIRST APPEARED 2004)
Retro jerseys will always be awesome. Period. These ‘Cuse Tomahawk Retros are the second Syracuse ensemble to hit our list. The flip of the emphasis on color is what works here: ‘Cuse is the Orange. They are known for their Orange. That will never change. But here, they’ve chosen a blue and white dominant outfit, with minimal orange accents, and it works for them beautifully, while still giving that throwback feel. Some people will definitely think we have these ranked too high, but Nike really outdid themselves with these, and we stand by our picks.
2. 2012 HOFSTRA ST PATTY’S DAY
We will let these unis speak for themselves. The combination of St. Patty’s Day and lax seems almost too easy to pull off, but Hofstra and Warrior teamed up to do it perfectly. The almost acid-wash-style fade of the shamrocks from the shoulders to the chest, and from the knee to the waist is brilliant. Plus, the shamrocks in the numbers are a great touch that adds even more personality to this uniform. With added touches of the Hofstra blue and yellow, these jerseys are fun, and more importantly, clean.
1. SYRACUSE VOLT
If there were one word to describe these, it would be “iconic”. With one of the first introductions of neon in organized, elite-level lacrosse, Syracuse and Nike created a trend that would permeate the next decade, and that’s why they deserve the #1 spot. You’ve got the all-white accented by the famous ‘Cuse orange and neon yellow, and the attractiveness of this combo made every kid in the game want to emulate this look. Syracuse dominated our board, with their third appearance being at number one overall.
Stadium Series between Capitals and Leafs
On March 3, 2018, Washington and Toronto will play an open-air game at the Naval Academy field
NHL.com @NHLdotcom
NEW YORK — The Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs will play in the 2018 NHL Stadium Series Coors Light at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. The game will take place on May 3, 2018. This was announced today at a press conference by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Over the next few years, the league plans to host more outdoor games at US military academies.
Washington and Toronto have faced each other 141 times in the regular season since season 1974-75. The Capitals are up by 24 points (YAS – 71-54-16 – 158; TOP – 60-67-14 – 134). The only time in the playoffs the rivals met this year – “Washington” won six games in a series of the first round. All six matches ended with a difference of one puck, and overtime was played in five of them.
The Maple Leafs and Capitals will play the first game of the NHL Coors Light Stadium Series at the US Military Academy for the first time, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “I’m sure that when these two teams resume the rivalry that reached new heights this April in their playoff series, their energy and dedication will be top notch.”0005
In March 2018, the Capitals will play their third outdoor game. In the first two, “Washington” celebrated the victory. In the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at National Park in Washington, the Capitals beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2, and in the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh they beat the Penguins 3-1 .
“We’re thrilled to welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans to Annapolis for the first outdoor hockey game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium,” said Capitals owner Ted Leonsis. “A unique and historic experience for all fans who are sure to see a great hockey game. We are honored to play at one of the finest venues in the region and the nation, the United States Naval Academy.”
This will be the Maple Leafs’ third outdoor match. In the first two games, they also did not know defeat. At the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, they defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout in front of 105,491 spectators. In the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centenary Classic at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto, the Maple Leafs beat the same Red Wings 5-4.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking forward to playing another outdoor game, Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan said. “Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium will provide an exciting and unique experience for the entire Maple Leafs organization and its fans.”0005
The US Naval Academy was founded in 1845 in the historic city of Annapolis. Young men and women are preparing to become professional officers in the United States Marine Corps. Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium opened on September 26, 1959. The stadium was founded by thousands of passionate veterans, sailors, marines and friends of the US Naval Academy. The arena was later renovated and turned into a first-class mixed-use complex where American football and lacrosse are played. During the renovation, the original elements of the stadium were preserved so that its history can be traced in chronological order.

Board of Trustees – Fishburne
“On his first day of tenth grade, my son Glenn pointed out an officer cadet carrying his sword and said he wanted to have one in the future. Before I could answer, he said, “But I know I’ll have to earn it!” Make money, really. This sword symbolizes great pride, strong will and diligence of the cadet.”
“FMS was the best investment I have ever made. Transferring Glenn out of public school in his sophomore year, he entered Fishburne with poor grades and no motivation. It didn’t take long for him to appreciate the structure of the classes and the discipline of JROTC teaching. What he found was a brotherhood of cadets, faculty and administration who supported them no matter the situation. His confidence was expressed in his appearance, and he honorably wore his accomplishments on his uniform. Glenn excelled in areas he once considered impossible.”
“As a senior officer cadet in the 2008 class, Glenn carried his sword with pride. He found himself reflecting on what he had learned from his experience. He learned to lead by example, be fair and when to delegate. With this knowledge, Glenn realized that these qualities turn a leader into a person that others not only follow, but follow with enthusiasm. His assignment to the Virginia Military Institute with the 2012 class would have been impossible if I had left him in a public school. His Fishburne sword will forever remain on his wall as a reminder of his transition from teenager to young adult and a bond that will last a lifetime.”
“Fishburn will always be close to my heart and highly recommended as a school of excellence. Thanks for being there for Glenn!”
Sincerely,
Linda Hershey
