Brian Stewart – Southern Express Lacrosse

Brian Stewart is in his seventh season as head men’s lacrosse coach at the University of Mount Union.  He led the Purple Raiders to a second place finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference’s inaugural season of 2014.

Prior to coming to Mount Union, Stewart spent two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina.

Prior to returning to Limestone, Stewart spent five years serving in the United States Navy. He was commissioned as an ensign in 2006 and was stationed at the Naval Academy Prep School as part of the athletic department.  He was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in 2008 and full Lieutenant in 2010. The latter came after he was ranked No. 1 among his peers.

Stewart served as the head lacrosse coach of the Naval Academy Preparatory School from 2006-2011 and was responsible for all facets of the program. Among his many accomplishments in that role were coaching 27 High School All-Americans and the graduation of 89-percent of the 72 lacrosse recruits sent to the Naval Academy Preparatory School over the five years.

His additional duties as a commissioned officer included serving as the event coordinator for home athletic contests, an assistant lifting coach, maintaining athletic facilities and serving as an academic advisor to all student-athletes. He was also responsible for overseeing the plan of the day over a 24-hour period, ensuring that safety of the command is maintained and documenting daily events in the command log book.

As a men’s lacrosse player at Limestone from 1998-2002, Stewart played for NCAA Division II National Championship teams in 2000 and 2002, an NCAA Finalist in 2001 and four straight Deep South Conference Championship teams that went undefeated in the regular season.

After graduating from Limestone with a bachleor’s degree in Liberal Arts, Stewart was an Assistant ED Instructor at Corkran (Md.) Middle School from 2003-05 and an Assistant Co-Taught Instructor at CMS from 2005-06. During the latter time frame, he served as the boy’s head lacrosse coach at North County (Md.) High School and oversaw the junior varsity program.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

Limestone’s defense held strong on the Warriors first possession, fending off three shot attempts before Maciejewski put the Blue and Gold on top 1-0 with a long range connection on the resulting clear. He scored on an empty net from inside the faceoff circle, but Merrimack quickly tied the game with 12:31 left.

In a game that featured two high-powered offenses, it was the defensive units that created problems early on as both squads combined to force seven turnovers. The Saints capitalized off one of those turnovers as Clancy planted his 21st goal of the year, but the Warriors again responded with the quick equalizer.

Second Quarter

Merrimack ended the first quarter with a one-goal lead, and then doubled up the Saints, 4-2, early in the second on an extra-man score with 11:01 remaining in the half. The Warriors would extend the scoring run to 3-0 as a goal by Kyle Stenberg pushed the margin to 5-2 with 4:41 left on the clock.

Limestone ended its scoring drought when sophomore Brian Huyghue (Halifax, Nova Scotia) finished off a nice feed from Maciejewski on the ensuing possession. The Saints would cut the advantage to one with 56 ticks remaining in the period as Maciejewski split the frame for the second time on the day.

Third Quarter

The Warriors delivered the opening goal in the third, pulling ahead 6-4, but the Blue and Gold rattled off three quick scores within a 17-second span to take its first lead since late in the opening quarter. Watkinson started the spurt before goals by Sheehan and Maciejewski put Limestone back on top, 7-6.

The Saints continued the third-quarter surge as goals by Smith and freshman Tyler Papa (Manlius, N.Y.) pushed the string of unanswered scores to five straight. The run would prove to be the decisive blow as Limestone pulled ahead 9-6 at the end of the third – a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Fourth Quarter

Playing in its first national championship game, Merrimack refused to go away as it responded with a man-up goal early in the fourth, cutting the margin to 9-7 with 12:21 showing on the Gillette Stadium video board. The Warriors would then add another just 41 seconds later to make it a one-score game.

That would be the closest things would get, however, as junior Ben Higgins (Hampstead, Md.) found the back of the net before Cornetta closed the scoring for Limestone at the 6:27-mark. Aikens surrendered one goal late, but made several tremendous saves down the stretch to preserve the 11-9 win.

TURNING POINT

In the regular season matchup just over a month ago, Merrimack used a 5-0 spurt before the half to tie the game and then eventually pulled away late in the contest. The roles were reversed this time around as the Saints rode the momentum of a 5-0 surge in the third quarter, and then used two goals in the fourth to put the contest out of reach.

Central’s Hoch to play with powerful Limestone lacrosse team

Central York High School senior Connor Hoch recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the powerhouse Limestone College lacrosse team.

Limestone is an NCAA Division II school located in Gaffney, South Carolina. The Saints have won three NCAA Division II national titles in the last four years, including claiming the 2017 crown. Limestone finished 21-1 last year.

Limestone has also won 10 Conference Carolinas championships in the last 11 years, including 2017.

Hoch, a midfielder, also plays for the Team Maryland Lacrosse Club. He was a Brine National All-Star in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and a Brine national champion in 2015. 

He helped Central win the York-Adams League title in 2017, scoring 41 goals, according to Central York’s MaxPreps.com page.

Hoch also considered Belmont Abbey, Mount Olive University and Walsh University.

K-D grad Marsteller earns PSAC, EWL honors: Kennard-Dale High School graduate Chance Martseller has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week.

He was also named the Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week.

The Lock Haven University redshirt junior made his much-anticipated Bald Eagles debut and he hasn’t disappointed. The nationally-ranked 165-pounder has raced out to a perfect 8-0 record.

At the Clarion Open (Nov. 5), Marsteller went 5-0 with four technical falls on the way to the individual crown. On Sunday, Nov. 12, Marsteller went a perfect 3-0 and won Pool A at the elite Journeymen Collegiate Classic.

Marsteller has won each of his eight matches by at least six points.

York’s Stahl named CAC Swimmer of Week, again: York College freshman swimmer Keven Stahl has been named the Capital Athletic Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week for the third consecutive week.

Stahl led the Spartans to a win over Washington & Jefferson in York’s lone meet for the week. The freshman earned two more wins in that meet. He now leads the team with seven individual victories. Stahl won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1 minute, 44.75 seconds, just .32 seconds off the school record. He also won the 100 butterfly in a time of 52.63 seconds.

Stahl owns the top times in the CAC in the 100 free (:48.17), 200 free (1:44.75), 500 free (4:41.57), 1,000 free (9:37.82), 100 fly (52.63) and 200 fly (1:55.88).

Karpontinis is Spartan Athlete of Week: York College sophomore wrestler Stefanos Karpontinis has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 12

Karpontinis earned his second straight tournament title at the Ursinus Fall Brawl. In the championship bout, he earned a 5-3 double-overtime win over Gettysburg All-American Paul Triandafilou. Triandafilou is a two-time NCAA Division III national qualifier and was a 2017 All-American.

Karpontinis is now 9-0 with three pins for the year.

Major League Lacrosse

Major League Lacrosse or MLL is a professional lacrosse league founded in 1999 in the United States that showcases the world’s best lacrosse players. Each season consists of 56 matches taking place from April to August.

MLL uses normal lacrosse rules and regulations with a few exceptions such as the 16-yard two-point line and 60-second shot clock.

The regular season started in 2001 with 6 teams in the MLL and planned to expand to 19 teams.

MLL currently has 8 teams. These are Annapolis, Boston, Columbus, Charlotte, Denver, New York, Palm Beach County and Rochester.

International Lacrosse Federation

There were two separate governing bodies for the male and female versions of the sport and this was one of the obstacles to international development. For men, lacrosse was regulated by the ILF, and for women, by IFWLA.

In August 2008, after four years of negotiations, the two bodies merged into one and the same body to form the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL). All championships previously held within the ILF and IFWLA have been transferred to the FIL.

The 2014 World Lacrosse Championship was hosted by the FIL in Denver, USA. The World Lacrosse Championship is held every four years and is funded by the FIL itself. However, only eight countries have competed so far – Canada, Iroquois citizens and the United States are in the top three places in these competitions.

European Lacrosse Federation

The next largest international competition is the European Lacrosse Federation of the European Lacrosse Federation (ELF) European Championship for both men’s and women’s teams. Since 1995 ELF has been hosting all European Championships.

Until 2001 they held these championships every year, then they changed the format every four years between the world championships.

Until 2004, only 7 countries participated in the EIL, but since then a record number of countries have participated with 12 men’s teams and 6 women’s teams, making it the largest international lacrosse competition of the year.

In the 2012 ELF Championship, England defeated Ireland with Sweden in third place. In the 2014 championships, 32 countries participated in the ELF championships.

International Lacrosse

Lacrosse has always been played mostly in Canada and the United States. Although there weren’t many lacrosse communities, they are certainly dedicated. Recently, however, lacrosse has thrived internationally with teams set up primarily in Europe and East Asia.

Lacrosse, which has not been an official Olympic sport since 1908, is the pinnacle of international lacrosse competition, consisting of the world championships held every four years, which began in 1968. Bellarmine University was chaired by four presidents – Alfred Horrigan (1950-1972), (1973-1990), Dr. Joseph McGowan (1990-2016), and Susan M.Donovan (2017 – present). Other early lacrosse clubs included Burwood District, Balmain, Camden, Granville, Marrickville, Mohican, Mosman, Newtown, North Sydney, Petersham, Stanmore, St Stephen’s Institute, University, Waverley, and Wentworth. ^{[14] [15] [16]} Lacrosse games were played at Sydney Cricket Stadium in the 1930s; ^[17] during the same period there was a group of the state of New South Wales. ^[18] This sport was strong enough for a Canadian team from Vancouver to tour Sydney in 1934. ^{[19] In} lacrosse was also played in Gleb before World War II. ^[20] The Sydney Lacrosse at the start of the period included Division A and B, and the Lassetter Cup was held. ^[21]

In 1909, the Broken Hill Lacrosse Association existed, which included the YMCA lacrosse club. ^[22]

Lacrosse was revived in New South Wales in the early 1990s by a small, dedicated group of men and women.It was originally a mixed lacrosse game in Neutral Bay. The men’s team successfully competed at the Paradise Lacrosse Tournament on the Gold Coast called “Basically Naked”. The junior lacrosse started out as a pilot in Gordon with the involvement of two development staff, resulting in up to 60 juniors playing modified lacrosse, some of whom went on to play the full game. With the addition of a development specialist at Sydney-based Lacrosse Australia, there is hope that the junior and senior games will be a success.Teams / clubs have been established in Pennant Hills, Concord, Woollahra, Mosman and Sutherland. The games were most often held at Centennial Park in Sydney, although initially they were held at Edgecliffe and some demonstration games were held in Concord, Mosman and Sutherland.

Tasmania

Hobart Mercury reported that lacrosse was played in Tasmania in the mid-1880s, and in 1884 the New Town lacrosse club recruited new members. ^[23] In 1906, Victorian teams played several games of lacrosse.Teams of North and South Tasmania. ^[24] In 1916, the Northern Tasmania Lacrosse Association withdrew from the competition for the title of prime minister due to recruiting men to participate in the war. ^[25] Lacrosse players were among those wounded or killed in the war. ^[26] In 1932, the Tasmanian team played Victoria as a curtain against a North-South soccer match. ^[27] In Hobart Mercury, , April 29, 1940, it was lamented that although lacrosse flourished before the Great War, it is now extinct. ^[28]

Pre-war

The history of women’s lacrosse in Australia dates back to 1904, when Miss Gwyneth Morris, a gym teacher at Merton Hall, Melbourne Church’s Girls’ Gymnasium, introduced the sport as part of the school’s commitment to team sports. ^[29]

In 1907, women practiced lacrosse in Goldfields Western Australia under the tutelage of men from the Kalgoorlie Lacrosse Club. ^[30]

The earliest registered women’s lacrosse club, the St. George’s Women’s Lacrosse Club, was founded in 1913 in New South Wales ^[31], soon followed by a club in Manley. ^[32] By 1914 there were four clubs and the competition was in place. ^[33] The NSW Women’s competition was suspended in July 1915 ^[34] presumably due to the First World War, with no further competition reported after that date.

By 1930, girls ‘lacrosse had directions from Miss Louis Hardy at St. Peter’s Collegiate Girls’ School and Girton House School in South Australia. ^[35] In 1931, the South Australian Lacrosse Association discussed the introduction of women’s lacrosse into the state. ^[36]

In 1936, the Victorian Women’s Lacrosse Association was formed. The games were centered around teams from the YWCA and Williamstown. By 1940, under wartime conditions, this sport had fallen into disrepair. ^[37]

Recovery

It wasn’t until 1962 that women’s lacrosse resumed in Victoria. With the support of Mel Taylor of the Lacrosse Club of Williamstown, 4 teams were formed (Williamstown 2, Footscray and Malvern). Ms Joy Parker (former secretary of the Victorian Amateur Women’s Lacrosse Association) became president of the newly reformed women’s association.The South Australian Women’s Lacrosse Association was also formed around the same time, with the competition beginning in 1962. Due to a shortage of lacrosse clubs in Australia, the Women’s Lacrosse Association of South Australia sold 12 women’s Victorian Association clubs for £ 4.

In 1962, Mel Taylor noticed an advertisement in a newspaper in Adelaide that women could play lacrosse. Mal used this as an opportunity for an interstate match. The Australian Women’s Lacrosse Council (AWLC) was established under the leadership of Ms Joy Parker.Ms. Parker became inaugural President following the first match between Victoria and South Australia with Secretary Ms. Titter and Treasurer Ms. L. Rollie.

In 1965, a men’s lacrosse carnival was held in Perth, Western Australia, and the AWLC were invited to play their annual interstate match between Victoria and South Australia during that carnival. Western Australians were persuaded to form an association and join the AWLC at the same time. (Coincidentally, they also competed in what became the first women’s lacrosse championship.)

Height

In 1975, the Tasmanian Women’s Lacrosse Association was formed in Hobart. In 1978, Tasmania became a full member of the AWLC and made its first official team at the 1978 Perth Championship.

National Championships for Seniors have been held annually since 1978, with South Australia reigning supreme from 1985 to 1996, when Victoria beat them in the final for the first time in 12 years; Victoria’s monumental victory and the end of South Australia’s spectacular 12-year winning streak.

The first U16 national championship was held in 1970, and in 1982 the first U19 interstate match was played between South Australia and Victoria at the Adelaide National Seniors Championships.

Currently, major lacrosse centers are located in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, with each city hosting multi-division club competitions in their respective urban areas. Each of these cities hosts national league competitions for both men and women, which attract foreign players (most from the US) who are hosted by local clubs to help strengthen their teams, as well as develop lacrosse programs for juniors.Most of the teams, both senior and junior, competing in lacrosse competitions across Australia are club-based, with small groups of school and university teams competing in club competitions.

Interstate competitions, inherited from the colonial days of Australia, have become a feature of many sports in Australia, and lacrosse is no exception. The competition is usually held as an annual weeklong carnival, with venues varying between states.Nationals are the highlight of the Australian lacrosse calendar, featuring some of the country’s best lacrosse talent and a very high level of games.

Australia’s first ever interstate (then intercolonial) match took place in Brisbane in 1887, when New South Wales beat Queensland 1 goal to zero. ^[38] In 1888, Victoria defeated South Australia 5-1 at Melbourne Cricket Ground in the first match between the two colonies. ^[39] In 1910, the MCG hosted the first Australian interstate lacrosse carnival. ^[40]

At senior and under 18 levels, each state sends its own elected team of representatives. At the Under 15 level, there is a national tournament to which Member States send one to three representative teams to level the playing field between the stronger and emerging lacrosse regions. National carnivals are now held at senior, under 18 and under 15 levels for both men and women.Often, several of these events are held simultaneously in one place.

The Australian Lacrosse League was introduced in 2004 to replace the National Carnival’s senior male instead of having state teams play each other twice, with double headers (Saturday and Sunday games) being played over three weekends. Each state takes one double heading and travels after another. The two teams with the best round-robin wins / losses progress to the finals, having played on the weekend after the last round-robin match.Currently, the strongest lacrosse states – Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia – compete in ALL, but the league’s long-term goal is to include teams from all Australian states. However, four years later, due to the lack of support from South Australia and Victoria due to the increasing cost of participation in the ALL-style competition, in 2008 the national championship returned to the traditional carnival format.

The first Australian Club Lacrosse Championship was held in Adelaide on June 7, 2008.The women’s championship was won by the Newport Victoria women’s lacrosse club and the men’s championship was won by the Woodville lacrosse club of South Australia. The success of the first event saw clubbing national championships return in 2009 in an expanded format, featuring premieres from the three major lacrosse-playing states, as well as a wildcard from one of those states to create the final format of the four. Due to the postponement of the national championships for the long weekend of June, the 2013 championship was held on October 5 and 6, 2013.Although it was held after the end of the 2013 season, it featured relevant 2012 season state premieres. Wembley declined an invitation to send in his women’s team, while the Williamstown men’s team withdrew from the men’s tournament at the last minute. The women’s tournament featured two teams and in one championship match, Brighton (South America) became the fourth consecutive Australian Club Championship to win over Newport (Vic). Lacrosse Glenelg’s Club of South Africa filled the vacancy left by Williamstown (Vic), competing with local rivals Brighton and Lacrosse Wembley and Brighton for the men’s title.Bayswater became the first Western Australian team to win the Australian Club Championship by beating Brighton.

In 1907, Australia’s first international lacrosse match against Canada was played at the MCG in front of 14,000 spectators. ^[41]

Australia has an important place on the international stage, consistently ranking in the top three in the men’s world championships, although it has never won a trophy. At the 2014 World Lacrosse Championships, Australia finished out of the top 3 for seniors for the first time, finishing fourth (behind Canada, the United States and the Iroquois).They also finished second in the first three Men’s U19 Lacrosse World Championships.

Australia’s women’s national teams have achieved even greater success. Although Australia has only a small fraction of the playing pool of other countries, Australia won two Senior Women’s World Championships (in 1986 and 2005), as well as the first World Under-19 Championship in 1995.
