What are the latest coaching changes in college lacrosse. How did teams perform in the 2023 season. Which recruits are flipping commitments. Learn about recent developments in college lacrosse programs and conferences.
Major Coaching Changes Shake Up College Lacrosse Landscape
The college lacrosse coaching carousel continues to spin as several high-profile programs have made changes at the top in recent weeks. Here are some of the most significant moves:
- Manhattan announced Doug Sage as interim head coach for the 2024 season
- John Odierna left Manhattan to become defensive coordinator at Syracuse
- Chris Ryan departed Mercyhurst (DII) to take the head coaching job at Mount St. Mary’s
- Dave Metzbower left North Carolina to join Matt Brown’s staff at Denver as offensive coordinator
Additionally, six Division I programs have changed head coaches this offseason, with over 15 programs seeing staff changes overall. Some notable programs with coaching transitions include Army, Dartmouth, Delaware, and Penn State.
Why are we seeing so much coaching turnover this offseason?
There are a few factors likely contributing to the high number of coaching changes:
1. Programs looking to shake things up after disappointing 2023 seasons
2. Coaches seeking new challenges or promotions at bigger programs
3. Retirements and departures creating a domino effect of openings
4. Athletic departments making changes to try to gain a competitive edge
These moves will undoubtedly have a major impact on the 2024 season as programs adjust to new leadership and systems. It will be fascinating to see which coaching changes pay off and which programs struggle with the transition.
Top Overachieving and Underachieving Teams of 2023
As we look back on the 2023 college lacrosse season, certain programs stood out for either exceeding or falling short of preseason expectations:
Overachievers
- Michigan
- Penn State
- Utah
- Army
- Johns Hopkins
Underachievers
- North Carolina
- Ohio State
- Rutgers
- Brown
- Harvard
- Jacksonville
What factors led to these teams over or underperforming in 2023? For overachievers, strong senior leadership, breakout stars, and innovative coaching often played a role. Underachieving teams frequently dealt with injuries, offensive struggles, or simply failed to live up to lofty preseason rankings.
Recruiting Updates: High-Profile Flips Shake Up 2024 Class
The summer recruiting period has seen some interesting developments, with two prominent programs landing flips from the 2024 recruiting class:
- Harvard secured a flip commitment
- Navy also landed a flip from another program
While the specific players involved were not named, these flips demonstrate the fluid nature of lacrosse recruiting. Even verbal commitments are not set in stone until National Signing Day.
How common are recruiting flips in college lacrosse?
Recruiting flips, while not extremely common, do occur with some regularity in college lacrosse. Factors that can lead to flips include:
1. Coaching changes at either the recruit’s committed school or a new suitor
2. Academic considerations as players get closer to college
3. Changes in a recruit’s athletic development or college goals
4. Increased interest from higher-profile programs later in high school
For college programs, landing a high-profile flip can provide a major boost to a recruiting class. However, losing a long-time commit can be a significant setback, especially late in the recruiting cycle.
2023 Conference Reviews: Patriot League and MAAC
As part of an ongoing series looking back at the 2023 season, we have in-depth reviews of two conferences:
Patriot League 2023 Review
The Patriot League saw another competitive season in 2023, with several teams jockeying for position:
- Army claimed the regular season and tournament titles
- Loyola and Boston University also had strong campaigns
- Navy and Lehigh remained competitive
- Bucknell and Lafayette struggled at the bottom of the standings
Army’s dominance was the major storyline, as the Black Knights went undefeated in conference play and earned an NCAA tournament berth.
MAAC 2023 Review
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) had an intriguing 2023 season:
- Manhattan won the regular season title
- Marist claimed the tournament championship and NCAA bid
- Mount St. Mary’s had a solid debut season in the conference
- Siena showed improvement but remained near the bottom of the standings
The MAAC race was competitive throughout, with Manhattan’s regular season success ultimately overshadowed by Marist’s tournament run.
Professional Lacrosse: PLL All-Star Game Recap
The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) held its annual All-Star Game on July 23, 2023, at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium on the University of Louisville campus. The event featured a matchup between the Veterans and Rising Stars teams.
Key highlights from the PLL All-Star Game:
- Veterans defeated Rising Stars 26-19
- Manny and Neumann led the way for the Veterans squad
- The game was played in front of a packed crowd in Louisville
The high-scoring affair showcased the immense talent in professional lacrosse, with established veterans proving they still have plenty left in the tank against the league’s young stars.
What is the significance of the PLL All-Star Game?
The PLL All-Star Game serves several important purposes for the league:
1. Showcases top talent in a fun, high-scoring format
2. Allows fans to see players from different PLL teams compete together
3. Brings professional lacrosse to new markets (like Louisville in 2023)
4. Provides a mid-season spectacle to maintain fan interest
5. Gives players a chance to show off individual skills outside normal game constraints
While the game doesn’t count in the standings, it remains an important event for growing the PLL’s fanbase and celebrating the sport’s top players.
Looking Ahead: Previewing the 2024 College Lacrosse Season
As summer winds down, attention is already turning to the 2024 college lacrosse season. Here are some key storylines and questions to monitor:
Top teams to watch in 2024:
- Notre Dame – Can they repeat as national champions?
- Duke – Always a contender with their recruiting prowess
- Virginia – Looking to bounce back after a down 2023
- Maryland – Consistently excellent under John Tillman
- Cornell – Ivy League powerhouse with recent Final Four appearances
Key questions for 2024:
- How will programs with new head coaches fare?
- Can any team challenge Notre Dame’s offensive firepower?
- Will we see more parity or continued dominance by top programs?
- Which underclassmen are poised for breakout seasons?
- How will rules changes impact the game?
The 2024 season promises plenty of excitement as the landscape of college lacrosse continues to evolve. From coaching changes to emerging powerhouses, there will be no shortage of compelling storylines to follow.
The Impact of Conference Realignment on College Lacrosse
While not directly addressed in the provided content, conference realignment remains a major factor shaping the future of college lacrosse. As schools change conferences for football and basketball reasons, lacrosse programs are often affected as well.
How is conference realignment impacting lacrosse?
Conference shifts are influencing college lacrosse in several ways:
1. Creating new lacrosse conferences or altering existing ones
2. Changing strength of schedules and RPI calculations
3. Affecting travel budgets and geographic footprints for programs
4. Potentially leading some schools to add or drop lacrosse
5. Altering traditional rivalries and conference tournament structures
As realignment continues in the broader college sports landscape, lacrosse programs and conferences will need to remain adaptable. The full effects may not be clear for several years as the dust settles on various moves.
Growing the Game: Lacrosse’s Continued Expansion
Another important trend in lacrosse is the sport’s continued growth and expansion, both geographically and in terms of participation numbers.
Where is lacrosse seeing the most growth?
Lacrosse is expanding rapidly in several areas:
1. Western states like California, Colorado, and Utah
2. Southern states such as Florida, Georgia, and Texas
3. At the youth and high school levels in traditional and new markets
4. In terms of diversity and inclusion initiatives
5. Internationally, with more countries fielding national teams
This growth presents both opportunities and challenges for the sport. While a larger talent pool and fanbase is positive, rapid expansion can also lead to growing pains in terms of coaching, officiating, and infrastructure development.
As lacrosse continues to evolve, stakeholders at all levels will need to work together to manage growth responsibly while maintaining the sport’s core values and traditions. The coming years promise to be an exciting time for lacrosse enthusiasts as the game reaches new heights of popularity and competition.

“Not a day without news from the national team!” – under this motto the last weeks, if not months, pass. Almost every day we receive some news from the national team of Russia. As for the Karjala Cup, at first Oleg Znarok, who was ill, did not fly to it, and after the defeat from Finland, nominal head coach Oleg Bratash had family circumstances. As a result, Sergey Zubov, who was originally listed as an assistant to the head coach, got on the bench.
Video of the day
As a result, Zubov acted as head coach, carried out general management of the game, forwards and the majority. Alexander Titov was responsible for the defenders and the minority, coach Yuri Zhdanov was in charge of shift control. Of course, not the strongest and ideal option for the national team, but force majeure intervened.
The Russian team lost the last match to the Finns when Oleg Bratash was at the helm. Our team missed all three goals in the minority, which could not affect the special teams, the conclusions were drawn.
“Despite the 3-0 defeat, in my opinion, our guys looked quite decent. In fact, we have gathered young, promising guys, and the Finns have all the strongest players. Each team at the home stage of the Eurotour always strives to assemble the optimal composition. And I, being the head coach of the national team, tried to do the same. In the current composition of the Finns, half of the players became world champions last spring. These are the main favorites of the current Karjala Cup,” said the honored coach of Russia Vladimir Krikunov.
Of course, in the second game against the Swedes, the Russian team wanted to rehabilitate itself. At the end of the first period, the Swedes carried out a quick attack, Fredrik Olofsson shot from the left side to a nickel – Bengtsson was ahead of Mukhamadullin, put his stick and sent the puck into Askarov’s net.
Then the audience saw a real masterpiece. Our young talent Michkov figured it out brilliantly. He watched for a rebound from the front board, picked up the puck on the hook and sent it under the crossbar. This is a lacrosse goal, you can only applaud here.
VIDEO OF GOL MICHKOV.
“Thanks to the coaches for giving me the chance to debut for the national team. I started the first shift with a throw, so it was already easier after that. But we lost today. We will draw conclusions and move on, add from match to match.
We were preparing for such hockey. The Finns are an adult playing team. They have many guys playing in the KHL, many are already familiar. Today they played great: they scored their chances, converted the majority.
I don’t feel pressure after Ovechkin and Tretyak broke records. This team includes candidates for both the Olympics and the MFM. It’s always a pleasure to cook with these guys. This is a great experience for me, ”Michkov said after the last match.
Now he confirmed his words. Indeed, no pressure from Matvey was visible. He played well, went to the match with the Swedes as an experienced hockey player and built beauty.
Thus, Matvey became the youngest scorer in the history of the Russian national team. He broke the record of Alexander Ovechkin, who scored his debut goal for the Russian national team in 2003 at the age of 17 years and 11 months.
And let’s not forget that earlier Matvey already had a great scoring chance, but he did not use it. It didn’t work then – it worked now! Bravo, Michkov.
Matvey has already thundered throughout the hockey world. Even the Swedish press writes about him, from which Russian players rarely manage to wait for praise. “He has a cheat code even when playing against adults,” Swedish journalist Patrick Betsel tweeted.
“Wow, Michkov! Supertalent gave Sweden a real delicacy. Matvey Michkov continues to amaze the entire hockey world. At the age of 16, he had already begun to score points in the KHL, and now he was given the chance to play in the national team.
