The Growth of Lacrosse Unlimited

Founded by Joe DeSimone in 1990 with one store in Hauppauge, the company has experienced remarkable growth over the past three decades.

Additionally, its strategic expansion into new markets has helped solidify its position as a leading retailer in the lacrosse industry.
Impact on the Long Island Lacrosse Community
The addition of a new Lacrosse Unlimited store in Wantagh is more than just a business expansion; it represents a growing commitment to the Long Island lacrosse community. Long Island has long been a hotbed for lacrosse talent, producing numerous collegiate and professional players. The presence of specialized retailers like Lacrosse Unlimited plays a crucial role in supporting this thriving lacrosse culture.

How does the expansion of Lacrosse Unlimited stores impact youth lacrosse participation? By providing easy access to equipment and fostering a sense of community around the sport, retailers like Lacrosse Unlimited can help encourage more young people to try lacrosse and stick with it as they grow older.
Jeff Teat’s Partnership with Lacrosse Unlimited
One of the most exciting developments in Lacrosse Unlimited’s community engagement efforts is its partnership with Jeff Teat, a star player for the New York Riptide in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). During the 2022-2023 season, Teat visited multiple Lacrosse Unlimited locations across Long Island, providing young players with a unique opportunity to meet and learn from one of the game’s top talents.
Activities During Store Visits
- Stringing tutorials
- Autograph sessions
- Q&A opportunities for young players
- Tips and advice for the upcoming season
Why is this partnership significant for young lacrosse players? Meeting professional athletes like Jeff Teat can inspire and motivate young players, giving them role models to look up to and aspire to emulate. It also provides valuable insights into the dedication and skill required to succeed at the highest levels of the sport.
Jeff Teat’s Impact On and Off the Field
Jeff Teat’s involvement with Lacrosse Unlimited goes beyond mere marketing. As a rising star in the NLL, Teat has been setting records and making a name for himself on the field. However, his commitment to giving back to the lacrosse community demonstrates a understanding of his role as an ambassador for the sport.
Teat’s Achievements and Philosophy
- NLL league leader in points (as of the 2022-2023 season)
- Surpassed previous career highs in Goals, Assists, and Points
- Pursuing his first MVP award in just his second NLL season
- Committed to passing on his love for lacrosse to the next generation
In Teat’s own words: “I am lucky enough to have seen all the positives lacrosse has brought into my life, and I want to be able to pass that on to the next generation.” This sentiment echoes the mission of Lacrosse Unlimited to not just sell equipment, but to foster a love for the game and support the growth of lacrosse at all levels.
The Role of Specialty Retailers in Growing the Sport
Specialty retailers like Lacrosse Unlimited play a crucial role in the ecosystem of any sport, but particularly for lacrosse, which has seen significant growth in recent years. These stores serve as more than just places to purchase equipment; they become hubs for the lacrosse community, offering expertise, support, and a gathering place for enthusiasts.
Functions of Specialty Lacrosse Retailers
- Equipment Sales and Fitting
- Educational Resources
- Community Building
- Support for Local Teams and Programs
- Introduction of New Technologies and Innovations
How do specialty retailers contribute to the growth of lacrosse? By providing a dedicated space for lacrosse players and fans, these stores help to legitimize and professionalize the sport. They offer a level of expertise and product selection that general sporting goods stores often can’t match, which is particularly important for a sport with specialized equipment needs like lacrosse.
The Future of Lacrosse Unlimited and the Sport
As Lacrosse Unlimited continues to expand, it’s worth considering what this growth means for the future of the sport. The company’s success is both a result of and a contributor to the increasing popularity of lacrosse across the United States.
Potential Areas for Future Growth
- Expansion into new geographic markets
- Enhanced online presence and e-commerce capabilities
- Partnerships with professional leagues and teams
- Development of proprietary product lines
- Increased involvement in grassroots lacrosse initiatives
What challenges and opportunities lie ahead for Lacrosse Unlimited and the lacrosse industry as a whole? As the sport continues to grow, there may be increased competition from larger sporting goods retailers. However, the specialized nature of lacrosse equipment and the strong community ties of stores like Lacrosse Unlimited provide a solid foundation for continued success.
Community Impact and Corporate Responsibility
As Lacrosse Unlimited expands its physical presence, it’s important to consider the company’s role in the communities it serves. Beyond providing equipment and creating jobs, specialty retailers have the opportunity to make a significant positive impact through various community initiatives and corporate responsibility programs.
Potential Areas for Community Engagement
- Sponsorship of local youth lacrosse leagues
- Equipment donation programs for underprivileged players
- Hosting clinics and camps featuring professional players
- Partnering with schools to introduce lacrosse to new audiences
- Supporting lacrosse-related charitable organizations
How can Lacrosse Unlimited leverage its expansion to make a positive impact on local communities? By integrating community outreach into its business model, the company can not only contribute to the growth of the sport but also build strong, lasting relationships with customers and stakeholders.
The expansion of Lacrosse Unlimited in Wantagh represents more than just the opening of a new store. It’s a symbol of the growing popularity of lacrosse, the importance of specialty retailers in supporting niche sports, and the potential for businesses to play a positive role in their communities. As the company continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how it balances commercial success with its commitment to fostering the next generation of lacrosse players and enthusiasts.

During the 2022-2023 season, Jeff Teat visited multiple Lacrosse Unlimited locations across Long Island to meet with local fans. The current Riptide offensive leader spent his time giving kids stringing tutorials, signing autographs, and answering any questions the young aspiring players asked. Through this partnership, local players had the chance to meet the NLL league leader in points and ask him for tips and advice for the coming season. In-person meet-ups with stars like Jeff Teat show another one of the Riptide’s efforts to grow their following around Long Island and give the community a unique experience to meet one of the game’s top players.
With one game remaining in the season, Jeff Teat has surpassed his previous career high in Goals, Assists, and Points as he is pursuing his first MVP award in just his second NLL season. While his accomplishments on the field have been setting records around the league, Jeff knows his impact can go far beyond the field. “I am lucky enough to have seen all the positives lacrosse has brought into my life, and I want to be able to pass that on to the next generation. ” Said Teat, whose father, Dan Teat, spent 14 years himself in the NLL. “My dad introduced me to the game young, and I really grew to love lacrosse more and more every time I picked up the stick or watched a game.”
Executive Vice President Rich Lisk has had only positive remarks about Teat on and off the field since he arrived in Long Island. “Jeff has done everything we have wanted when you draft a player first overall. His play continues to rise each game as he already is one of the best players in the entire sport. Off the field, he’s out signing autographs, giving back to our community with free clinics and helping the growth of the Riptide and the NLL.”
Lacrosse Unlimited is a Sportswear brand that has grown to become one of the top lacrosse apparel and equipment distributors in the whole sport. However, the store’s roots are tied to Long Island for longer than most know as the founders, Joe Desimone and Mike Desimone, started the company in 1990. At the time, the store’s original name was “Long Island Lacrosse” which then was renamed “Total Lacrosse” before eventually settling on Lacrosse Unlimited which has over 48 locations according to their website.

The Rochester Knighthawks (also known as the K-Hawks) are a professional box lacrosse team in the Eastern Conference of the National Lacrosse League. They play their home games at the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial.
The Nighthawks are owned by Pegula Sports and Entertainment (owners of the Buffalo Bandits) who purchased the team’s intellectual property from former owner Kurt Styres, who moved the previous version of the team to Halifax, Canada under the name “Halifax Thunderbirds”. As an expansion team, the current Rochester Knighthawks was founded in 2019year, and they are not a continuation of the previous Nighthawks, all championship titles and records have also moved to Halifax. Only the original name remains of the team, the colors and logo have changed.
Last season, the Rochester Knighthawks failed, finishing last in the Eastern Conference with only 4 wins and 14 losses.
This is how it happens, a team with a big name and a rich history, but there is nothing to write about. The whole story has moved to another city, and the Nighthawks are now writing their new book from scratch.
