Another sign of Under Armour’s struggles.

With Under Armour struggling financially, the Baltimore-based company has seemingly divested its lacrosse equipment business. Under Armour recently confirmed to the Baltimore Business Journal that it has stopped providing lacrosse equipment to the University of Maryland after nearly a decade of providing sticks, gloves and protective equipment to Maryland’s men’s lacrosse program.
IMS has learned that Maryland has inked a new contract for its equipment, with New York-based Maverik Lacrosse. The program already had an arrangement with Maverik for helmets, under its Cascade brand, but the new agreement will cover all other equipment beginning during the next season. It’s another sign of the times for Under Armour, which has been hemorrhaging money and thus is trying to wriggle out of its 15-year, $280 million sponsorship deal with UCLA.

Prior to Under Armour, STX provided equipment to the Terrapins. Maryland joins fellow Cascade Maverik Big Ten schools, Penn State, Michigan, and Rutgers in using Maverik Lacrosse equipment. Fellow Big Ten lacrosse member, Johns Hopkins, used Under Armour equipment. It is unclear what provider Johns Hopkins will use moving forward.
Terps coach John Tillman, whose program is among the nation’s elite, talked about Under Armour’s gear in a recent interview.
“I mean, obviously, I’m a little biased. I love their stuff. A lot of times, especially in the lacrosse part, we would get samples and we would be a little bit of the guinea pigs. They would send us stuff, and our kids would try it out and give them feedback. So our kids thought that was super cool. I know we enjoyed it because we could give them feedback on, ‘Hey, the kids think this’ or, ‘The kids think that.’ Obviously, you know, [Kevin Plank’s] done a lot for the university, and Under Armour’s done a lot for Maryland,” Tillman said.
“We’re pretty loyal folks. I love it. Listen, a lot of those people make good products. There’s a lot of good stuff out there. I got a kick out of you guys going back and forth over it, so I figured I’d reach out and fun with it. Our kids love it. They love the Under Armour stuff. It’s easy to get them motivated, you know, say there’s going to be some gear or some food, maybe some Chipotle, and they’re all in.”
The agreement with Maverik Lacrosse covers only equipment, not apparel. Under Maryland’s 10-year sponsorship agreement with Under Armour, it will continue to provide uniforms to Terps lacrosse and all of the school’s other scholarship athletic teams. Under Armour also signed a three-year equipment deal with the National Lacrosse League in 2019, which presumably will also end. It is not known if the women’s lacrosse program will also move to Maverik Lacrosse for its equipment.
Maryland football tallied another Sunday commitment after a busy visit weekend.
Maryland football tallied another Sunday commitment after a busy visit weekend, adding a pledge from Class of 2024 linebacker Keyari James.
The Clearwater Academy (Fla.) prospect has played just one year of football in America after living in Canada his entire life. Picking the Terps was a rather easy decision and a full-circle moment for the international product.
“When I was a kid I used to watch college football highlights and I just always liked turtles as a kid and that’s their thing,” James told InsideMDSports. “So that’s kind of what got me started.”
James picked up an offer from Maryland in February, visited College Park unofficially in March and officially visited this weekend. His offer from the Terps remained his only Power Five offer throughout the spring with additional interest from Rhode Island, Charlotte, Arkansas State and more.
“It was a great trip fun-wise of course, but they did a great job of really showing me where I would be,” James said of his official visit. “Who’s helping you academically, where I would be training, where I would be studying, where I’d live. I really got a great grasp of what the Maryland lifestyle is like and all my teammates. I kind of got to know them and like their dynamics and I just thought it was great.”
With knowledge of the program and a relationship built through months of recruiting, James mostly looked for confirmation on the type of program put together by head coach Mike Locksley.
“I feel like for me my biggest factor going into [my visit] was the culture,” James said. “I want a school that has a winning mentality and a really focused culture. So I feel like seeing the players and how they talked and talked to the coaches and like Coach Lockley’s vision for the program, it kind of motivated me to want to get behind it.”
Standing at 6-foot-1, 225 pounds, James projects as an inside linebacker, bringing strength, speed and instincts to the heart of the defense. His ability to get in the backfield is hard to miss.
“[Last season] was my first year playing football in America, so it was an adjustment period for me,” James said. “My game, I like to play fast-paced, I love to hit people, I like to set the tone.
