How did Kingsway’s lacrosse team perform in recent playoff matches. What were the key factors that contributed to their victories and defeats. Who were the standout players that made a difference for Kingsway and their opponents.
Kingsway’s Playoff Victory Against Egg Harbor Township
In a thrilling South Jersey Group 4 playoff match, Kingsway Dragons demonstrated their prowess on the lacrosse field, securing a hard-fought 14-8 victory over Egg Harbor Township (EHT) Eagles. This win marked a significant milestone for Kingsway, propelling them into the second round of the playoffs and setting the stage for a showdown with second-seeded Lenape.
The game, hosted by EHT for the first time in their school’s history, was a testament to both teams’ determination and skill. While Kingsway ultimately emerged victorious, EHT’s resilience and fighting spirit were on full display throughout the match.
Key Players and Game-Changing Moments
Several players stood out during this intense playoff battle:
- Meghan Bennett (Kingsway): Scored 4 goals and provided 1 assist
- Jules Campagna (Kingsway): Contributed 4 goals and 2 assists
- Haley Phalines (Kingsway): Dominated face-offs and scored multiple goals
- Hayley Henderson (EHT): Freshman standout with 3 goals
- Emily Gargan (EHT): Another freshman talent, scoring 2 goals
The game’s momentum shifted multiple times, with Kingsway establishing an early lead, EHT mounting impressive comebacks, and the Dragons ultimately securing their victory in the final moments.
Strategies and Challenges Faced by Both Teams
Both Kingsway and EHT employed various strategies throughout the match, adapting to their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. Kingsway’s height advantage in face-offs, particularly through Haley Phalines, posed a significant challenge for EHT.
EHT coach Melissa Williams highlighted the importance of countering Kingsway’s face-off dominance: “You have to get it out and away. She wants it to go straight up for a self draw and we needed to get it out to our little girls.”
The Eagles faced additional hurdles, including injuries to key players and difficulties finding the back of the net early in the game. Despite these challenges, EHT’s young talent shone through, with freshmen Hayley Henderson and Emily Gargan making significant contributions.
The Impact of Youth and Program Development
Both Kingsway and EHT showcased the importance of nurturing young talent in building successful lacrosse programs. EHT’s coach emphasized the role of their senior players in mentoring younger team members, setting the stage for future success.
Williams reflected on the team’s progress: “We’re a young program and we’re excited about what’s next. I said, ‘some of you guys ended your career here tonight, but tomorrow starts the next group.’ The younger girls need to be happy with what (the seniors) taught them, so that when they do move on and up they can remember what the seniors taught them.”
Kingsway’s Narrow Defeat Against Jackson Memorial
In another thrilling match, Kingsway faced off against Jackson Memorial in a game that came down to the wire. Despite a valiant effort, Kingsway suffered a heart-wrenching defeat as Jackson Memorial clinched the victory in the final seconds of the game.
The Decisive Moment
With just 8 seconds left on the clock, Jackson Memorial’s Wedgeworth scored the game-winning goal, capitalizing on a man-up opportunity. This clutch play turned the tide in Jackson Memorial’s favor, transforming what could have been a disappointing outcome into a moment of triumph.
The goal came off a precise pass from Rinaldi, who found Wedgeworth positioned perfectly at the right post. This well-executed play demonstrated the importance of teamwork and strategic positioning in crucial moments.
Kingsway’s Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Despite the loss, Kingsway’s performance against Jackson Memorial showcased their resilience and fighting spirit. The team had managed to tie the game with just 1:54 left, thanks to a goal by junior attackman Bill Moran during an extra-man opportunity.
This ability to perform under pressure and capitalize on crucial opportunities highlights Kingsway’s mental toughness and tactical awareness. While the final outcome wasn’t in their favor, the team’s performance undoubtedly provided valuable experience for future high-stakes matches.
The Role of Special Teams in Lacrosse
Both the Kingsway vs. Jackson Memorial and the Kingsway vs. EHT matches underscored the critical role that special teams play in lacrosse. Extra-man opportunities, whether on offense or defense, can often be the deciding factor in close games.
In the Jackson Memorial game, both teams scored crucial goals during man-up situations. Kingsway’s tying goal and Jackson Memorial’s winning goal both came during extra-man opportunities, highlighting the importance of capitalizing on these advantages.
Similarly, in the EHT game, Kingsway’s ability to dominate face-offs through Haley Phalines gave them a significant edge. This advantage in possession allowed them to build and maintain their lead throughout the match.
Developing Special Teams Skills
For high school lacrosse programs looking to elevate their game, focusing on special teams could provide a competitive edge. This includes:
- Practicing man-up and man-down situations regularly
- Developing face-off specialists
- Creating set plays for extra-man opportunities
- Improving communication during transitions
- Enhancing players’ ability to adapt to changing game situations
The Future of Kingsway Lacrosse
Despite the mixed results in these recent matches, the future looks bright for Kingsway lacrosse. The team’s ability to compete at a high level against strong opponents bodes well for their continued development and success.
Key factors that could contribute to Kingsway’s future success include:
- Continued development of young talent
- Building on the experience gained in high-pressure playoff situations
- Refining strategies for face-offs and special teams
- Strengthening mental toughness and resilience
- Fostering a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement
As Kingsway continues to build its lacrosse program, these experiences – both the victories and the defeats – will serve as valuable learning opportunities. The challenge now lies in translating these experiences into consistent performance and long-term success.
Lessons from Kingsway’s Recent Lacrosse Matches
The recent matches involving Kingsway’s lacrosse team offer several valuable lessons for high school sports programs:
The Importance of Mental Toughness
In both the victory against EHT and the narrow loss to Jackson Memorial, Kingsway demonstrated remarkable mental resilience. The ability to perform under pressure, whether maintaining a lead or fighting back from behind, is crucial in high-stakes games.
Nurturing Young Talent
The standout performances of young players in these matches highlight the importance of developing talent at all levels. Giving younger players opportunities to shine in important games can pay dividends both in the short term and for the program’s future.
Adapting to Opponents’ Strengths
Kingsway’s ability to leverage its advantages, such as height in face-offs, while EHT’s efforts to counter these advantages, demonstrate the importance of strategic adaptability in lacrosse.
The Power of Momentum
Both matches saw significant momentum shifts. Understanding how to build on positive momentum and how to stop an opponent’s momentum are crucial skills for any lacrosse team.
Moving forward, Kingsway’s lacrosse program can use these experiences as building blocks for future success. By focusing on developing young talent, refining special teams play, and cultivating mental toughness, Kingsway can continue to compete at the highest levels of high school lacrosse.
As the program grows and evolves, the lessons learned from these intense playoff matches will undoubtedly shape the team’s approach to training, strategy, and player development. With a solid foundation and a clear vision for the future, Kingsway lacrosse is well-positioned to achieve even greater success in the seasons to come.
Kingsway survives EHT’s second-half surge to advance in playoffs – Glory Days Magazine
By DAVE O’SULLIVAN

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — Meghan Bennett scored for Kingsway early in the second half of the opening round of the South Jersey Group 4 playoffs, and with an 11-4 lead it looked as though the Dragons were on the verge of blowing out Egg Harbor Township, which was hosting a playoff game for the first time in school history. But the Eagles had come too far this season to simply throw in the towel.

EHT rallied for three straight goals to cut the deficit to 11-7, then, after the Dragons went on a spurt to go up 14-7, the Eagles rallied again. But Kingsway did enough to hold off EHT down the stretch, as the No. 10 Dragons scored a 14-8 victory over the No. 7 Eagles to advance to the second round. Kingsway advances to face second-seeded Lenape on Friday.
The Eagles (12-8) got an early goal from Emily Gargan to tie the game, 1-1, but then Kingsway ripped off three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead, and led 7-2 by the end of the first half. EHT had all kinds of trouble containing Bennett and Haley Phalines, who combined to notch four of the Dragons’ seven first-half goals. And Phalines, who is about six feet tall, presented a big challenge on faceoffs.
“You have to get it out and away. She wants it to go straight up for a self draw and we needed to get it out to our little girls,” said EHT coach Melissa Williams. “Our attack had some problems finding the back of the cage in the beginning of the game. We had a good comeback, but just fell short with the time. Their center (Phalines) was very tall and that’s a big advantage. And the last time we saw them, in a scrimmage, they had a different goalie. We have a few girls hurt who were significant for us in the beginning of the season, so with them out and us not pulling through with goals in the beginning of the game — we had more shots on cage, if we had just finished some of them it would have been a different game.”

Kingsway (6-12) went ahead by as much as 10-2 with a strong start to the second half, getting a pair of goals from Jules Campagna, but EHT responded with goals by Gigi DeCaprio and Laine Walterson, and after a goal from Kingsway, the Eagles ripped off three straight tallies to cut the deficit to 11-7. Walterson, Gargan and Hayley Henderson all scored during that stretch, but the Dragons responded with three goals of their own — including a pair by Campagna — to push the lead out to 14-7. Bennett finished with four goals and an assist, Campagna added four goals and two assists, and Pahlines and Payton Ruwet combined for five more goals. Henderson, a freshman, led the Eagles with three goals while Gargan, another freshman, added two more. DeCaprio and Walterson also scored a pair of goals each.
“At the end of the day, we came this far and made history. We didn’t win the game, but we made history by having a home playoff game, and that’s big for EHT. Next time we have to see a ‘W’ in the column instead of a loss,” Williams said. “That next thing we need is depth coming in off the sideline. We need to be that well-oiled machine and we’re not there yet, but we’ll get there. The girls who had a great game for us tonight are young. We’re a young program and we’re excited about what’s next. I said, ‘some of you guys ended your career here tonight, but tomorrow starts the next group.’ The younger girls need to be happy with what (the seniors) taught them, so that when they do move on and up they can remember what the seniors taught them.”
What’s next: (10) Kingsway travels to (2) Lenape on Friday at 4 p.m. in the South Jersey Group 3 quarterfinals. (7) EHT’s season is complete.

Lacrosse – Wedgeworth’s Goal with 8 Seconds Left Sends Jackson Memorial Past Kingsway

JACKSON — In a season filled with adversity, Jackson Memorial turned disappointment into delirium with one clutch play.
Kingsway had rallied to tie the game on an extra-man opportunity goal by junior attackman Bill Moran with 1:54 left in the game, and took control of the ensuing face-off. A loose-ball push on Kingsway gave the Jaguars possession with just over half a minute to play, and off the timeout they went with their man-up offense in an attempt to win the game. The Jaguars cycled the ball around until Jan Niec gave it to Rinaldi behind the net. He immediately found Wedgeworth with a precise pass to the right post, and Wedgeworth tucked it in to send the Jaguars into the sectional quarterfinals.
“We were trying to run our man-up against their zone to see if that look was there, and it wasn’t so we went back to our 1-4 and I was sitting on the crease wide open,” Wedgeworth said. “No one saw me. It was perfect.”
Jackson Memorial celebrates Scott Wedgeworth’s game-winning goal with eight seconds left to beat Kingsway 7-6 in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group III playoffs.
“We only had 30 seconds left and I saw Scott and he was wide open, so there was no reason I shouldn’t have made the pass,” Rinaldi said. “This could’ve been the last game for a lot of kids so you have to take that chance. If we dropped it, we dropped it, but the chance was there, and we picked up on the opportunity.”
Junior attackman Troy Wolf led the Jaguars (9-8) with two goals and one assist and Niec, a senior midfielder, had a goal and two assists. Wedgeworth finished with one goal and one assist in addition to going 7-of-12 on face-offs. Senior defensive midfielder Vinny Celidonio, senior midfielder Jeff Galatola and junior attackman Alex Aguilar also scored for Jackson, while freshman goalie Dylan Furnback turned aside 10 shots to secure the win.
Jackson will play at top-seeded Shawnee (15-1) on Tuesday, hoping to keep its tremendous second-half run going. Since an 0-6 start, Jackson has gone 9-2 in its last 11 games with wins over Holmdel, Red Bank Catholic and Kingsway in the last three contests. The Jaguars were in the final of the Shore Conference Tournament two years ago and reached the semifinals last season. They missed this season’s tournament by one game, their bad start too much to overcome by the May 3 cutoff. Over the last two weeks they’ve played their best lacrosse, however, salvaging a season that didn’t look like it could be saved in mid April.
“It’s a huge win,” Wedgeworth said. “We came together after not making the (Shore Conference) Tournament and said we want to make a statement. After beating Holmdel and RBC, the five and four seeds, we showed maybe we should have made the SCT.”
“This definitely gives us a big lift,” Wolf said. “It was a heartbreaker not being able to make the tournament. We had some problems with the program in the beginning, but we stuck through it and our coach (James Buchanan) got our heads right. We came out the last couple weeks looking to show what we’re all about.”
It was all Jackson through the game’s first 12 minutes as the Jags raced out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. Celidonio got the scoring started with an unassisted goal off his own clear at 10:15, and Galatola made it 2-0 at 4:55 with a blast from the top of the box during an EMO. Jackson would capitalize on another man-up situation with 1:05 left in the opening quarter when Niec dished inside to Wolf, who zipped it past Kingsway goalie Gabe Lombardi for a 3-0 advantage.
Kingsway (6-10) cut the Jaguars’ lead to 3-2 at halftime with the only two goals of the second quarter. Sean Dunn found Moran with an inside pass that made it 3-1 at 6:58, and Moran assisted on a similar goal when he teamed up with Zack Craft on an EMO strike at 3:09.
Junior attackman Troy Wolf had two goals and one assist to lead the Jaguars’ offense in their 7-6 victory over Kingsway in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group III Tournament.
Wolf pushed the Jaguars’ lead to 4-2 off a pass from Niec at 4:20 of the third quarter, but the Dragons answered with two goals in the final 1:17 to tie the score at four. Senior midfielder Nick Guglietti took a pass from Dunn and beat Furnback to make it 4-3, then David Floyd got a fortunate bounce when his long shot deflected in off defender Bobby Chitren with 11 seconds left in the quarter.
Each time Kingsway would draw close, however, Jackson would find an answer. Niec gave the Jaguars a 5-4 lead 57 seconds into the fourth quarter off a pass from Wedgeworth, and Aguilar finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play off a Celidonio clear and a quick feed from Wolf that put him one-on-one with the goalie.
Once more Kingsway would rally to tie the score, but again Jackson would fire back to pull ahead. Wedgeworth’s clutch goal kept the Jaguars’ season alive and gave them another moment to help erase their dreadful start to the season. Jackson graduated several standout players off last year’s team, but this year’s players still entered the season with the mentality they were a top team in the Shore. The finger-pointing and sullen atmosphere that accompanied their shocking start to the season has given way to a tight-knit unit riding a wave of momentum.
“The one thing our coach was trying to teach us was to not get down on each other and stay positive,” Wedgeworth said. “We got our ball-handling back and our goalie has been making crazy saves, but overall I think it’s been the way we treat each other that’s been the difference. We’re more of a family unit now.”
“These were our expectations in the beginning of the year,” Wolf said. “We’re where we want to be now, and we just have to keep going forward.”
They’ve proved to themselves they are the team deep down they always knew they were. Now they want to spread the word.
“We’re excited. We want to play Shawnee,” Wedgeworth said. “We want to prove something. They’re the team to beat, and if we can beat them we feel we can go all the way.”

I am in 8th grade. I used to play football, basketball and wrestling. I stopped playing those because as I enter high school I want to focus on one sport. So I chose lacrosse because I love it. I was the leading scorer in my indoor league (8 games 20 goals). I mainly play attack but I also play middie. I go to Hockinson but I play lacrosse for Kings way because Hockinson (both high school and middle school) does not have a team. I am comfortable dodging from any where on the field. I am also comfortable shooting from all angles. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and shooting on my goal in my backyard. As of right now I want to get a double major in marketing and business. I would like to go to a big school but its defiantly not at the top of my list.

Kingsway names Miller as new boys’ head lacrosse coach; Hess takes over winter track’s head coach
WOOLWICH TWP. — The Kingsway Regional School District has named Kevin Miller, high school health and physical education teacher and graduate of the University of Central Florida, the new head coach of the boys’ lacrosse team.
Coach Miller has held the assistant boys’ lacrosse position at Kingsway Regional High School the past four years. An outstanding athlete himself at Holy Cross High School and the University of Central Florida (UCF), Coach Miller brings a wealth of coaching knowledge in multiple sports from various high schools including Kingsway, Holy Cross and Riverside.
“Coach Miller has been an impressive young man and his passion to work with students, in both the classroom and on the athletic field, is second to none. Named the South Jersey Times cross-country Coach of the Year in 2016, Hess has served as the winter track program’s longtime assistant coach. Kingsway is excited to elevate Hess to head coach, and we are confident that she will continue a culture of character and success.
Kingsway’s Girl’s Lacrosse Team Defeats Seneca – freevoicenews
SWEDESBORO, N.J. – Kingsway’s freshman girl’s lacrosse team played their first game of the season on March 30 at 4 p.m. against Seneca. Families in warm jackets squinted in the sunlight to watch their girls play. The teams played on Kingsway’s freshly cut field. According to a referee, the final score was Kingsway 15, Seneca 11.

At the beginning, Seneca scored a few goals putting them ahead of Kingsway. Kingsway quickly gained the lead back. A few mothers could be heard on the sidelines cheering on various players.
By half time, Kingsway scored twice as many goals as Seneca. The score at half time was Kingsway 7, Seneca 3.
One Kingsway offense player, number 16, scored several times. Kingsway’s goalie and defense players also performed well by saving goals that could have brought Seneca the win.
After half time, the lacrosse teams ran the field back and forth. Each team scoring or missing. For the last quarter, Seneca hustled to gain the lead, but Kingsway stayed on top.

At one point the Kingsway track team ran by the field singing, “D-DRA-DRAGONS, dragons, dragons are the best! Go dragons!”
Seneca almost caught up at the end of the game. However, Kingsway held the lead for the majority of the game and kept it.
The game was so close that spectators could barely keep track of the score. When the horn blew signaling the end of the game, the Kingsway freshman girl’s lacrosse team ran excitedly and hollered to their coach with sticks in the air. It was clear to spectators who won.
Kingsway’s freshman girl’s lacrosse Coach Michelle Carrocino said, “The ladies played hard.”
To prepare for this game Carrocino said, “The girls work hard every single day. We did a lot of drills and game plans since the beginning of March.”
Kingsway’s lacrosse team is prepared for the season. (Taken by Kristin Guglietti)
Sami Federico, a 15 year old freshman defense player, said “I like playing with my teammates. I think we will have a good season.” Federico has played lacrosse for five years with most of her current teammates who became her friends.
“We work well together as a team,” said Chloe Britton, a 14 year old freshman mid player. Britton said she is excited for the season and hopes to win every game.

Ovechkin and Malkin bypass legends, Whims is the king of overtime, Svechnikov is a new hero – Hockey news
Notable events with the Russians in the starting month of the NHL season.
Russians in Washington: Suspension
Washington’s Russian stars were the first in the NHL to be punished for violating the COVID protocol. Ovechkin, Orlov, Kuznetsov and Samsonov were suspended from training and games after a double run at the start of the season to Buffalo and Pittsburgh. The league cited regular disregard for isolation rules and socializing in the same hotel room as the reason. There was no doubt in North America: by punishing Ovechkin and company, the NHL sent a signal to all teams. Later, information appeared about Samsonov’s positive test, but the league had questions not only for the wife of the captain of the Capitals, Anastasia.
Ovechkin – NHL Chief for Off-Ice Revenue
The Washington captain became the first in the league in advertising earnings in the new Forbes ranking. The publication compiled a list of the best hockey players in terms of salaries (excluding deductions due to the pandemic) and other income. In the top 3 – Matthews ($ 16 million), McDavid (15.2 million) and Marner (15 million).
Ovechkin (13.2 million) and Crosby (12.4 million) added to the top five. The Russian and the Canadian lost their salaries to the younger stars, taking into account the long-concluded contracts, but they remain the most attractive NHL players for advertisers: Alexander’s income outside the ice is $ 5 million, Sydney is $ 4.5 million.
The highest paid Russian in the NHL, Panarin, ranked sixth in the Forbes ranking (11.2 million), in tenth – the only goalkeeper in the top 10 Vasilevsky (10.1 million).
Ovechkin – # 1 Future Free Agent
The 35-year-old Capitals forward topped The Hockey News’ ranking of expiring league hockey players who will become free agents this summer. The striker has a 13-year contract for $ 124 million in the last year (this was the first agreement in the NHL for the amount of $ 100+ million). The salary of a Russian this season is $ 9.538 million (after deductions due to the pandemic – 8.2 million). In North America, they expect that Ovi will agree with his native Washington on a new contract for a period of two to five years and try to complete the race for Gretzky’s sniper record (and then keep his promise and return to Dynamo).
Ovi: return
The captain of “Washington” is the only Russian from the capital team, whose suspension was limited to four matches. But “everything” is not the most appropriate word for a player, even without talking about losing the pace in the race for the best snipers in the history of the league. The forward returned to the squad during the home streak ahead of the Boston encounter with these words: “Of course it sucks. Nobody wants to get disqualified and find themselves in such a situation. But now, you know, this is in the past – you need to learn a lesson and move on. ”
Ovechkin scored one goal in four starting matches – in the first with Pittsburgh, against which Kuznetsov played brighter and more useful. After returning, the captain brought Washington an overtime win over Boston (now 7 points, 2 + 5 in 5 games). The Russian has updated his own record for goals in overtime (24), bypassed Hall and Selanne and became the fourth in the history of winning goals (111) and caught up with Gartner in the top seven NHL snipers (708).
“He’s a Washington DC and league legend, so it’s nice to catch up with him, but there’s still a long way to go,” Ovechkin said of Gartner and the sniper race. The next goal is Esposito and 717 goals, before the record holder Gretzky – 186 goals.
Malkin and the greats
The Pittsburgh forward leaves questions about the game. It’s not even that Malkin made his first effective action only in the fourth match of the season – he scored a goal in a striking match against Washington. The striker (he has 4 points, 1 + 3 in 9 matches) is still dissatisfied with his hockey himself: “You have to come to the rink and work, work, work. Now it’s hard to say anything good about my game, but I hope that everything is ahead and I believe in myself. ”
In North America, they are discussing the Penguins’ intention to retain the 34-year-old Russian until the end of his career (the current contract is calculated until the end of the 2021/22 season). In the match with the Rangers at the end of January, the striker set two important achievements at once: he beat Lemieux in the number of games for Pittsburgh (916, more only for Crosby) and pushed Jagr out of third place in the club’s top scorers list (1089 points, only Crosby and Lemieux).
Panarin and Record
The Rangers forward entered the club’s rich history from New York in January. Panarin scored 100 points the fastest – he did it in 73 matches, one ahead of the previous record holder – Messier. In 8 games of the season, the striker has 9 (4 + 5) points, and Buchnevich has 7 (2 + 5).But this is not enough for the competitiveness of the team in the Eastern Division. At the other extreme are Washington, which won without the Russians, and Philadelphia with Provorov as the leading defender (6 points, 2 + 4 in 10 games).
Whims vs. Kings
The Minnesota forward made a bright debut in the NHL: 3 (1 + 2) points and an overtime winning goal against Los Angeles. Only one Russian started the best in the league. The Wild forward got good press and solidified the impression in his second game with the Kings. And again – a productive action in overtime, in the second case – a transfer.
Whims became the main star of the first week of the NHL, the first in the history of the club to score 6 (1 + 5) points in 6 starting matches. At the end of the month, the striker added another goal – again against Los Angeles, again playing spectacularly and aggressively. After the starting month, he has 8 (2 + 6) points in 10 matches.
Romanov & Canadians
The Montreal defender scored a splendid assist against Toronto in his first North American League game and scored against Edmonton in the third.Romanov had an enthusiastic press even before his NHL debut, got a lot of playing time at the Canadiens and spent it convincingly.
Svechnikov & Hurricane
The Carolina forward dominated and scored in three games at the start of the season. Svechnikov was the best Russian in the league at the time, but his team was quarantined due to the coronavirus outbreak. After his return, Andrey brought his statistics to 4 goals and 2 assists in 6 matches. The Hurricanes striker is also working on his new contract this year. And he remains calm: lacrosse goals and other spectacular numbers are not his goal, but if possible, he will not miss the chance to surprise him again.
Guryanov and Zvezda
Another team affected by the covid outbreak is the 2020 Stanley Cup Dallas finalist. The Stars entered the game nine days after the start of the season and defeated Nashville – 7: 0 with participation in the extravaganza of Khudobin and Radulov. Guryanov had a bright start. The forward has 7 (3 + 4) points in 6 matches and is one of the best Russian scorers in the league.
Our goalkeepers
Samsonov can’t take a place at the Washington goal. Bobrovsky, after missing the training camp and the starting game, must deal with the ghosts of an unsuccessful first season at Florida.
Georgiev and Shesterkin won just once with the Rangers in January, with the participation of the first match with Pittsburgh after the defeat in overtime at the end of the month, a story about a conflict with Diangelo broke out (after which the leading defender ended up in the draft refusals).Sorokin failed his debut at the Islanders after Varlamov’s injury half an hour before the start of the second regular season derby in New York.
At his top level, Vasilevsky at Tampa and Khudobin at Dallas. Even if you cannot play with a stick and skate, you can always eliminate the danger in a different way. The best Russian goalkeeper at the start of the season is Varlamov. The Islanders goalkeeper had a dry streak of two matches and one period, setting a number of records.
Highlights of the season: Ovechkin’s 700th goal
While everyone is waiting for the start of the new regular season, NHL.com / ru presents the 10 best moments of the 2019-20 season. Today we are talking about the second place, where we put the 700th goal of the captain of the Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin, which he scored on February 22 in the match against the New Jersey Devils.
The Russian forward had another great regular season, in which he scored 48 goals and, together with Boston striker David Pastrnyak, won the Maurice Richard Trophy, which is awarded to the best NHL sniper. Ovechkin won this prize for the third time in a row and for the ninth time in his career, and improved his own record, which he set at the end of the 2018-19 season. Then the Russian scored 51 goals and won the award for the eighth time, ahead of Bobby Hull, on whose account there were seven.
All goals are important, but still Ovechkin scored his main goal last season on February 22 in an away match against New Jersey (2: 3). Yevgeny Kuznetsov got the puck outside the Devils goal and made a quick pass to the captain, who made a 2: 2 score from an unusual right-hand throw-in circle and scored his 700th career goal in the NHL regular championships.Ovechkin became only the eighth player in the history of the league to whom this milestone was submitted.
The entire elite sniper club looks like this: Wayne Gretzky (894), Gordie Howe (801), Jaromir Jagr (766), Brett Hull (741), Marcel Dionne (731), Phil Esposito (717) and Mike Gartner (708) ). It is noteworthy that Ovi started the championship “only” in 14th place in history with 658 goals, but during the season he was ahead of Luc Robitaille (668 goals), Teemu Selanne (684), Mario Lemieux (690), Steve Yzerman (692) and Mark Messier (694). Only two goals were not enough for Ovechkin (706 goals) to catch up on the seventh line with Gartner and knock out another “fifty kopecks”.And there is no doubt that if it were not for the forced pause, the Russian would definitely have done it.
Video: WASH-PIT: Capitals congratulate Ovechkin on his 700th goal
“As he approached this mark, I thought it would be great that this club will have two representatives from Washington,” said Gartner, who spent his first ten years in the NHL for the Capitals and retired in 1998. “I want to congratulate Alex in advance for catching up with me so quickly on his way to 800 goals.”
During the pause, Ovechkin admitted that it was a shame for him to lose the opportunity to score 50 goals again, but at the same time he said that safety should come first: milestone, but we need to think about the health of the family, people, fans. The sooner all this is over, the earlier we will start playing hockey. I will be happy to score 50 goals, set another achievement, but now we only care about health. ”
Beating Gartner is Ovechkin’s first individual goal for the new season. But let’s think about what other sniper achievements a Russian can beat in the new championship. Without a doubt, it can be argued that the captain of “Washington” in the list of snipers is able to overtake not only Gartner, but also Esposito, Dionne and Hull in one season. To do this, the Russian needs to score 36 goals. He did not reach this milestone in his career only three times in 15 seasons: in the 2012-13 lockout championship (32 goals), as well as in the 2010-11 (32) and 2016-17 (33) seasons. In all other regular championships, Ovi had at least 38 goals.
The Russian forward reached 40 goals 11 times, and eight more times he scored 50 goals. If he had knocked out a fifty-kopeck piece this year, he would have caught up with Gretzky and Mike Bossy, who have scored 50 goals nine times in a season. Well, one more goal for Ovechkin for the future championship. In general, at some point in the 2019-20 season it even seemed that the captain of “Washington” would be able to reach 60 goals for the second time in his career (after the 2007-08 championship), but it did not work out.If it suddenly develops in the new season, then Ovi will catch up with Jagr, who is in third place, in the list of snipers.
Video: All 700 goals of Alexander Ovechkin
Do you think this is unrealistic for a 35-year-old striker? What about the fact that at 34, Ovechkin scored four hat-tricks in one season for the first time in his career? And in principle, the forward became the only player in history who, over the age of 33, managed to chalk up four hat-tricks to his account. How much more to come? Or here’s another remarkable fact.It took Ovechkin just 53 games to score 40 goals in one regular season. Faster (in 52 matches) he managed to do it only once – 12 (!) Years ago – in the 2007-08 season at the age of 22.
Another significant achievement that Ovechkin will soon need to beat is the number of goals in the majority. In the history of the NHL, the Russian takes third place in this indicator (260 goals). So far, Hull (265) and Dave Andreychuk (274) are ahead of him, but it is clear that the leader of the “Capitals” will soon be ahead of them. The Russian striker has scored at least 13 goals in numerical superiority 14 times in his career. And to score 15 goals in the majority in one regular season is not a problem for him.
There is also no doubt that Ovechkin will come second in history next season in terms of the number of shots on target. Considering that the Russian forward shot 220 times even in the 2012-13 lockout season. Now he is in third place (5545) and is only 92 shots behind Jagr (5637). The leader is Ray Burke (6209), but he is unlikely to stay there in a couple of years. In addition, Ovechkin has one more winning goal left to go to the sole fourth place in this indicator. Now he shares this line with Selanne and Hull (all three have 110 winning goals). And the top three looks like this: Jagr (135), Howe (121) and Esposito (118).
Video: VASH-VIN: Ovechkin was congratulated on his 700th career goal
Another of the best moments of the season Ovechkin gave us on February 25th together with his son Sergei. On this day, before the match between Washington and Winnipeg at Capital One Arena, a ceremony was held in honor of Ovi’s 700th goal. The Russian forward received virtual congratulations from the NHL legends, holding his son in his arms, who at some point grabbed his dad by the neck with both hands and called the world “mi-mi-mi”. If you watched this moment less than 10 times in a row, then I’m ready to argue that “The Lion King” and “The Green Mile” also did not cause any special emotions in you.
Ovechkin has long proved that after 30, life is just beginning. And not only sports and professional life, but also family life. During the last season, Alexander and his wife Anastasia had a second son, Ilya Alexandrovich Ovechkin. While he is just growing up, his older brother Sergei has already learned to throw the puck and catch it on the hook. In two years! Who knows, maybe in more than 20 years we will be writing about the debut in the NHL of the Ovechkin-Ovechkin-Ovechkin trio, which will be gathered by the general manager with the same name in one of the NHL clubs? We will not think of anything, but why not dream.

The sly strong will win | Warspot.ru
In everyday peaceful life, the word “cunning” most often carries a negative connotation, but in war it is quite the opposite: sometimes it is tricks, deception and disinformation that allow you to gain the upper hand over the enemy. History is full of examples of how a handful of soldiers, led by a cunning commander, defeated entire hordes of enemies.
Razin’s “smart” victory
In June 1669, Stepan Razin, the leader of the navy, thanks to his natural ingenuity and talent as a commander, was able to win the largest naval victory for Russia in the 17th century.Since 1668, his “thieves” Cossacks dominated the Caspian Sea and attacked Iranian possessions. The Persians were offended by the fact that their subjects were suffering from the raids of some rebellious peasants, so when in 1669 Razin and his Cossacks settled on the Pig Island, from 50 to 70 ships were sent to destroy it, which were previously connected with chains to catch small Cossack ships are like fish in a net. Razin, who had only 15 sea and eight river plows at his disposal, hardly had any chance in an open battle. Therefore, when the Cossacks saw the approach of the Persian fleet, they began to retreat into the sea, where there was more room for maneuver.
At the same time, the robbers managed the courts so badly that the leader of the Persians, Mamed Khan, believing in his easy victory, began to persecute. When Razin lured the enemy into the open sea, his fleet turned around and opened fire on the Iranian flagship. Shells filled with oil and cotton set fire to the ornate ship, and it sank, dragging all neighboring ships with it.Panic began on the Persian ships. At this moment, the Cossacks showed all their skill and dexterity in controlling the plows. They maneuvered between enemy ships, firing at them from all sides. One after another, the Iranian ships went to the bottom. Of the entire Persian flotilla, only three ships survived, on one of which Mamed Khan himself disappeared. In this battle, Stepan Razin lost only 50 wounded people, but captured 33 cannons, as well as two children of the Persian governor.
How Khmelnitsky captured two hetmans
On May 15, 1648, the army of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, numbering 18,000 people, entered the Korsun region. In Korsun itself at that moment there were the troops of the Commonwealth (more than 20,000 people) under the leadership of the crown hetmans Mikolai Pototsky and Martin Kalinovsky. They just received information about the crushing defeat of the gentry under the Yellow Waters and have not yet decided how to proceed. Khmelnitsky sent forward several of his scouts, who deliberately surrendered to the enemy. Portraying defectors, they began spreading rumors that Khmelnitsky was leading a huge army, much larger than that of the Poles in Korsun.Khmelnitsky himself built his troops in a crescent on a hill in front of the Polish camp and began to depict preparation for an attack with large forces.
The Poles, believing the defectors, at the evening military council decided to retreat at dawn along the Boguslav road. They did not know that the day before one of the Khmelnitsky regiments under the command of Maxim Krivonos and part of the Krymchaks had gone to the rear of the Poles and prepared a trap. As soon as the troops of the Poles left their camp and approached the hills, they stumbled upon a dig and rubble, attempts to bypass which were hampered by dirt and gentle hillsides. When the Polish detachments lost order, the Cossacks of Krivonos attacked them from the front and from the flanks. Volleys of Cossack artillery sowed panic in the Polish camp, and the main forces of Khmelnitsky who had struck in the rear slammed the trap. In four hours, the enemy was completely defeated: in the hands of the Cossacks were 41 cannons, two crown hetmans, 80 nobles, 127 officers, as well as a large number of weapons, ammunition and provisions. Of the entire Polish army, only 1,500 people escaped death and captivity.
Zopyr’s Trick
Sometimes, in order to deceive the enemy, you have to make sacrifices. This was also known to the Persian military leader Zopyrus, who lived in the 5th century BC. He served Tsar Darius I, who could not conquer the rebellious Babylon in any way. For two years the inhabitants of the city under the leadership of Nebuchadnezzar III successfully held the siege of the Persians and did not even think about surrender. Seeing no other way out, Zopyr decided to destroy the city’s defenses from the inside. He ordered to cut off his ears and nose. In this form, he came to the Babylonians and convinced them that he was mutilated, allegedly by the order of Darius as punishment for the fact that he offered the king to reconcile with the inhabitants of Babylon. The Babylonians gave shelter to the disfigured commander, and soon he finally gained confidence in them – he was made the main commander.
Portrait of Zopyr from the collection of biographies of 1553 (http://wikipedia.org)
The joy of the Babylonians knew no bounds: every time Zopir and his army went out against the Persians, they fled in fear. None of the defenders suspected that all these retreats were planned in advance and carried out on the personal orders of Darius. Soon, Nebuchadnezzar had no doubts that the military leader mutilated by the Persian king was a friend and protector of Babylon, which, in fact, Zopyr used when a good opportunity turned up.At the appointed hour, he opened the gates and admitted the Persian army into the city. Babylon fell, and Zopyr became a people’s benefactor and hero for the Persians. True, when Babylon rebelled again, already during the reign of Xerxes I, the rebels first of all rushed to kill Zopyr, thus getting even for betrayal.
Bloodsport
Lacrosse is not very popular in our latitudes, but even in those countries where the game invented by the Ojibwe Indian tribe is a popular sports entertainment, not everyone knows that there is a moment in its history associated with treachery and blood.Due to the drought of 1762, the Ojibwe Indians suffered from hunger. In addition, their French allies in 1763 lost the war to the British and lost all their colonies, and the Indians did not like the new orders established by the British colonial government. Against the background of all this, a prophet named Neolin appeared among the Indians, who called on all the tribes of Native Americans to unite and return to the old order. Chief Pontiac understood this call in his own way – for him, a return to the old order meant the return of the French. Therefore, he gathered a secret society from the leaders of different tribes and began to prepare an uprising. The conspirators struck their first blow in May 1763, as a result of which the British lost eight forts west of the Appalachians. The next target was Fort Mackinac.
Since the news spread very slowly, even after a month no one in the fort knew about the uprising. Therefore, when in early June the Ojibwe Indians set up their camp right under the walls of Mackinac, this did not matter. On June 4, the king’s birthday, the Indians invited the chief of the fort, Major George Etherington, and his men as spectators to Baaga’adowe (the original name of lacrosse) as a sign of respect. The defenders gladly accepted the invitation and left the fort. At the same time, they did not think of closing the gates behind them, or at least taking weapons. The Indians were counting on this: during the game, the ball “accidentally” flew into the gate of the fort, and several Ojibwe women ran after it. The soldiers did not attach any importance to this and waited for the continuation of the game. Once inside the fort, the women killed the sentries and took possession of their weapons, and then gave a signal to their fellow tribesmen. The Indians killed the commandant of the fort and everyone who came with him to the game, after which the entire garrison and part of the population, who were trying to resist, were killed.
Kanzhal massacre
In 1708, the Kabardians, refusing to pay tribute to the Crimean Khan and the Ottoman Sultan, incurred their wrath. An army led by Khan Kaplan-Gerai was sent to Kabarda to “admonish” the Circassians. According to various sources, the number of the Ottoman-Tatar army ranged from 20 to 40 thousand people. In an open battle, the Kabardians would have been completely destroyed, so they sent their negotiators to the Gerai camp, who convinced the khan that they did not need a war, and that everything could be resolved peacefully. That evening, a group of Circassian defectors came to the enemy’s camp. Having lulled the enemy’s vigilance, the main forces of the Kabardians under cover of night advanced to the Ottoman camp. They imperceptibly blocked all escape routes, and some of the soldiers climbed to the top of the mountain, at the base of which the enemy’s tents stood. Others led three hundred donkeys to the front line, tied to their backs with bundles of hay soaked in resin.
At the signal, the hay was set on fire, and the animals were directed towards the enemy with pricks of daggers. The distraught animals rushed into the camp, setting fire to everything in their path and crushing the sleeping soldiers. When the fire started, the Kabardians sitting on the top of the mountain began to push boulders onto the tents. Horses of the Tatars, frightened by fire and shouts, began to rush about the camp. The defectors and ambassadors turned out to be dispatched assassins who slaughtered all the enemy commanders. The completely disorganized troops of Gerai could not do anything when 7,000 Kabardian horsemen led by Prince Kurgoko Atazhukin broke into the panic-stricken camp. Those who were not hacked by the Circassians died under boulders or fell into the abyss. Various sources claim that from 10 to 30 thousand Tatars and Ottomans were killed that night. For Kabardians, the victory in the Kanzhal battle is still considered a national holiday.
Snake Bombs
Surely everyone knows who Hannibal is, but this commander received the glory of the greatest military strategist of antiquity not only for his Carthaginian “blitzkrieg”. Around 186 BC.e., hiding from Roman justice, he found refuge at the court of the king of Bithynia Prusius I. At this time, he was just at war with the Pergamon king Eumenes II, who was an ally of Rome. Following the principle “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”, Hannibal offered his help to Prusius. They met Eumenes in a naval battle. Two opposing squadrons lined up in battle formations, but before giving the signal to start the battle, Hannibal sent his ambassador to the enemy. When the ambassador approached the Pergamon fleet, he announced that he had a message for Eumenes II.He was taken to the ship where the king was, as it was believed that the letter contained a proposal for an armistice. However, to the disappointment of the Pergamon ruler, there were only insults in the letter.
Enraged Eumenes gave the order to start the battle. He did not even suspect that, having received the ambassador, he betrayed the location of his ship. By order of Hannibal, the Bithinian fleet concentrated its attacks on the Pergamon flagship, and he, unable to withstand the onslaught, retreated to the nearest harbor. Nevertheless, the Pergamon ships began to gain the upper hand over the Prusian fleet, but suddenly clay pots flew to their decks.According to the Roman historian Cornelius Nepot, at first the Pergamon sailors laughed, as they considered it a gesture of despair, but then they realized that there were snakes in the pots, which quickly spread over the decks. Some sailors threw themselves into the sea, others took their ships to their home harbor. However, Prusius thanked Hannibal in a very peculiar way: wishing to curry favor with Rome, he gave the senate the location of the commander hated by the Romans, and then his troops surrounded Hannibal’s refuge. Not wanting to surrender to the Romans, the commander took the poison that he kept in the ring, even outwitting Rome by his death.
Last invasion
On February 22, 1797, a Franco-Irish force landed near Fishgard, Wales. The “Black Legion” under the command of the Irishman William Tate numbered about one and a half thousand fighters. They were opposed by the troops of Lord Cowder, collected by him from British soldiers, sailors and local militia, a total of 700 people. The British, although they were able to provide the guests with a “warm” welcome, without the support of artillery, they could only dream of a victory over Tate.Fortunately, not everything went smoothly for him either: the soldiers, for some reason, disliked the Irish colonel and revolted. In addition, the French did not really like to fight alongside the Irish, which often led to fights. Tate realized that a little more, and he could not hide from the enemy that his troops were completely demoralized. Therefore, he organized a meeting with Cowder, at which he suggested that he surrender and avoid unnecessary bloodshed, but the British lord was not one of the timid, and even quick-witted.

He realized that a superior army, and even under the command of an Irishman, did not need to worry about the lives of the British, so instead of surrendering he decided to bluff. Couder burst into a fiery tirade about how many soldiers he had, and how many more with each passing hour. At the end of his speech, he himself demanded that Colonel Tate lay down their arms and surrender. The commander of the “Black Legion” decided not to test the veracity of the Lord’s words on his own skin and accepted the terms of surrender – so nearly seven hundred British were able to capture nearly one and a half thousand soldiers of the Franco-Irish coalition, as well as capture one frigate and one corvette. The French frigate became part of the Royal Navy of Great Britain under the name HMS Fishguard, and the events near Fishguard went down in English history as “The Last Landing Force”, since after that no foreign power made any more attempts to land on the shores of Foggy Albion.
Falsification of Bismarck
Sometimes cunning is needed not only to win a war, but also to start it at the right time and not look like an aggressor in the eyes of the world community. Otto von Bismarck understood this perfectly. After the victory of Germany in the Austro-Prussian-Italian war, until the complete unification, only the lands of southern Germany, which were in the power of the French, were lacking. By that time, the French had managed to annoy all the powers a little, but if Germany had unleashed a war with France, she would have become an aggressor. In the long term, this could spoil relations with other countries, and the French could have allies. The dispute over the Spanish throne was for Bismarck an excellent opportunity to start a war and not involve other states in it. After the overthrow of Queen Isabella II in 1868, Germany nominated a relative of Wilhelm I, Leopold Hohenzollern, as a candidate for the throne. This displeased Napoleon III, who had his own candidacy. On July 8, 1870, through the ambassador, he conveyed to the Prussian king a demand to dissuade his relative from claiming the Spanish throne, and William, fearing war, agreed.Bismarck, upon learning of this, flew into a rage. However, the arrogance of the French government played a cruel joke on the French: on November 13, France demanded that William I officially prohibit Leopold from accepting the Spanish throne, even if he was ever asked to do so.
This proposal violated all the norms of diplomatic etiquette, so Wilhelm replied that he had no right to do so and make any promises in this regard. Then in Paris a new requirement was formulated, according to which William I would promise never to encroach on the dignity of France. However, the king could not provide the ambassador with an audience and listened to the demands of the French side at the station, after which he promised to continue the conversation in Berlin. Leaving, Wilhelm, ordered to inform Bismarck about everything. The “Iron Chancellor”, having received the dispatch, slightly edited it, and in the final version of the document Wilhelm allegedly not only refused the French ambassador an audience, but said that they had nothing more to discuss. In this form, this message was published in all newspapers, Paris just exploded with indignation, France declared war on Germany and began to look like an aggressor in the eyes of the public.
Shrinking Army
The number of intrigues that took place at the court of the Chinese rulers during the era of the Warring States could envy any royal houses of Europe. As a result of one such military adviser, Sun Bin, a descendant of the Chinese philosopher and strategist Sun Tzu, was accused of high treason by his longtime rival Pan Juan. As a punishment, Sun Bin received tattoos on his face telling about his crime, cut out his kneecaps (according to another version, cut off his feet) and drove him out of the Wei kingdom. However, a person with such a brilliant mind will come in handy at the court of any ruler, and therefore he was gladly accepted into the kingdom of Qi, over whose army Wei’s soldiers repeatedly won thanks to Bin’s advice. When the two kingdoms unleashed war again, Sun Bin, recovering from his wounds, stood at the head of the Qi army, while the culprit of all his misadventures, Pan Juan, led the army of the Wei kingdom. The Qi army had a bad reputation: throughout China, their soldiers were considered cowards and their commanders mediocre. The descendant of Sun Tzu decided to play on this.
Every time Juan’s troops came close to Bin’s army, the latter gave the order to retreat, and every night, when the army got up camp, he ordered fewer and fewer fires to be lit. So on the first night, Juan’s scouts saw about 100,000 bonfires, the next night there were half as many, then only 20,000, and so on. Pang Juan was jubilant: he believed that the Qi soldiers, as always, were fleeing to their homes without even going into battle. Therefore, after another sortie, he decided to finish off the remnants of the enemy army, on the same night he gathered the best soldiers and set off with them.According to legend, when Pang Juan drove up to the Qi army camp, he saw a tree with peeled bark, on which there was an inscription. To see it, the commander of the Wei army lit a torch and read: “Pan Juan will die under this tree.” He had barely finished reading when 10,000 Qi archers opened fire at the same time. Juan’s riders fell one after another under a hail of arrows. The warlord of the Wei kingdom, realizing that he had lost to a cripple, could not stand the shame and cut his throat.
Cunning Zhang Xun
The best proof that even in the face of overwhelming enemy forces can be won with the right strategy and a number of tricks comes from the story of General Zhang Xun.In 755, a rebellion broke out in China, later called the An Lushan rebellion. General Xun was a supporter of the ruling Tang Dynasty. In 756, he and his two thousandth army ended up in the city of Yongqiu, which was very quickly surrounded by a forty thousandth army of rebels. The city was perfectly fortified, but the general understood that defeating the enemy, so much superior to him in strength, was not an easy task, and without tricks it would not be possible to cope with it. The first time he went to the trick, when his soldiers began to run out of arrows.
