Can a piece of string become a fashion statement. How does animal cruelty impact the lives of innocent creatures. What are the physics behind swinging objects on strings.
The Rise of Unconventional Fashion Accessories: String as a Headpiece
In the ever-evolving world of fashion, celebrities often push the boundaries of conventional style. Recently, an unnamed celebrity has been spotted wearing a simple piece of string around their head, sparking curiosity and debate among fashion enthusiasts. This minimalist approach to accessorizing raises questions about the nature of trends and personal expression in the fashion industry.
Is this string headpiece a genuine fashion statement or merely a publicity stunt? The simplicity of the accessory contradicts the typically extravagant nature of celebrity fashion, making it an intriguing topic for discussion. Fashion experts might argue that this trend exemplifies the industry’s move towards sustainability and minimalism, while critics may view it as an attempt to generate buzz through unconventional choices.
The Psychology Behind Unconventional Fashion Choices
Understanding the motivations behind such unusual fashion decisions can provide insight into celebrity culture and societal trends. Psychologists suggest that adopting unique fashion elements can be a form of self-expression or a means to stand out in an increasingly crowded media landscape. The string headpiece, in its simplicity, might represent a desire to break free from the expectations of glamorous, high-end fashion typically associated with celebrities.
The Dark Side of Fashion: Animal Cruelty and Negligence
While the celebrity’s string accessory may seem harmless, a disturbing incident involving a similar object highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the devastating consequences of animal cruelty. In Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, a puppy named Nancy was discovered with a life-threatening condition caused by a piece of string tied tightly around her neck.
The string, likely placed there when Nancy was younger and never removed, had caused severe swelling of her head as she grew. This horrific case of neglect serves as a stark reminder of the suffering that can result from carelessness or intentional cruelty towards animals.
The Physiological Impact of Constriction on Animals
Nancy’s case illustrates the severe consequences of restricting blood flow in living creatures. The string around her neck had effectively cut off circulation, leading to a dangerous swelling of her head. This type of injury can cause long-term damage to tissues and organs, potentially leading to life-threatening complications if left untreated.
- Restricted blood flow can cause tissue death
- Swelling may lead to difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Prolonged constriction can result in permanent nerve damage
- Infection risks increase due to compromised skin integrity
Animal Rescue Organizations: Unsung Heroes in the Fight Against Cruelty
The heartwarming rescue of Nancy by Animal Aid Unlimited showcases the vital role that animal welfare organizations play in combating neglect and abuse. These dedicated teams work tirelessly to save animals from dire situations, often facing challenging and distressing scenarios in their mission to protect vulnerable creatures.
How do animal rescue organizations make a difference in the lives of abused animals? These groups not only provide immediate medical care and rehabilitation but also work to educate communities about responsible pet ownership and the importance of animal welfare. Their efforts contribute to a broader movement aimed at reducing animal cruelty and promoting compassion towards all living beings.
The Rehabilitation Process: From Rescue to Recovery
Nancy’s journey from a severely injured puppy to a healthy, playful dog demonstrates the remarkable resilience of animals and the effectiveness of proper care and treatment. The rehabilitation process typically involves several key stages:
- Emergency medical intervention to address immediate threats to life
- Wound cleaning and management to prevent infection
- Pain management and supportive care during the healing process
- Nutritional support to aid recovery and overall health
- Physical therapy and exercise to restore normal function
- Behavioral rehabilitation to address any psychological trauma
- Finding a loving forever home or safe living environment
The Power of Social Media in Animal Welfare Advocacy
The sharing of Nancy’s rescue story on platforms like YouTube has highlighted the significant impact that social media can have on animal welfare issues. These platforms provide a powerful tool for raising awareness, gathering support, and inspiring action in the fight against animal cruelty.
How does social media amplify the efforts of animal rescue organizations? By sharing compelling stories and visual content, these organizations can reach a global audience, potentially leading to increased donations, volunteer support, and public pressure for stronger animal protection laws. The emotional response evoked by stories like Nancy’s can spark meaningful conversations about animal welfare and inspire individuals to take action in their own communities.
Leveraging Technology for Animal Protection
Beyond social media, various technological advancements are being employed to enhance animal welfare efforts:
- GPS tracking collars for monitoring endangered species
- Drones for detecting and preventing poaching activities
- AI-powered image recognition for identifying animals in distress
- Mobile apps for reporting animal abuse and connecting rescuers
- Telemedicine platforms for remote veterinary consultations
The Human-Animal Bond: Stories of Compassion and Dedication
While Nancy’s story highlights the dark side of human interaction with animals, it also showcases the incredible bonds that can form between humans and their animal companions. The story of Robert, a dog owner who decided to take a year-long road trip with his terminally ill dog Bella, exemplifies the depths of love and commitment that exist in these relationships.
What motivates individuals to go to such lengths for their animal companions? The human-animal bond is a complex and powerful connection that can provide emotional support, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being for both parties. In cases like Robert and Bella’s, the knowledge of limited time together often intensifies the desire to create lasting memories and provide the best possible quality of life for a beloved pet.
The Therapeutic Value of Animal Companionship
Research has shown that interacting with animals can have numerous physical and mental health benefits for humans:
- Reduced stress and anxiety levels
- Lower blood pressure and improved cardiovascular health
- Increased physical activity and social interaction
- Enhanced mood and decreased symptoms of depression
- Improved cognitive function in older adults
The Physics of Swinging Objects: From Fashion to Fun
Transitioning from the emotional aspects of our relationship with animals to a more scientific perspective, we can explore the physics behind swinging objects on strings. This concept relates not only to the celebrity’s string headpiece but also to various forms of entertainment and scientific inquiry.
What factors influence the behavior of a mass swinging on a string? The motion of a swinging object is governed by several key principles of physics, including centripetal force, angular velocity, and the relationship between the length of the string and the period of oscillation. Understanding these concepts can provide insight into everything from simple playground activities to complex engineering applications.
Key Equations in Circular Motion
The behavior of a mass swinging on a string can be described by several important equations:
- Centripetal force: F = mv²/r
- Angular velocity: ω = 2π/T
- Relationship between angular velocity and string length: ω² ∝ 1/L
Where:
- F is the centripetal force
- m is the mass of the object
- v is the velocity
- r is the radius of the circular path
- ω is the angular velocity
- T is the period of one complete rotation
- L is the length of the string
Practical Applications of Circular Motion Principles
The physics of objects swinging on strings has numerous real-world applications beyond simple demonstrations. Understanding these principles is crucial in various fields of science and engineering.
How are the principles of circular motion applied in everyday life and technology? Some practical applications include:
- Amusement park rides design and safety
- Satellite orbits and space exploration
- Centrifuges for medical and scientific research
- Wind turbine efficiency optimization
- Athletic performance in sports like hammer throw
By studying the behavior of masses on strings, scientists and engineers can develop more efficient and safer technologies across a wide range of industries. This fundamental understanding of physics continues to drive innovation and progress in numerous fields, demonstrating the far-reaching implications of seemingly simple concepts.
Experimental Verification of Circular Motion Principles
To verify the relationship between angular velocity and string length, a simple experiment can be conducted using different string lengths and measuring the time for one complete rotation. This hands-on approach to understanding physics principles not only reinforces theoretical knowledge but also develops critical thinking and experimental skills.
The process of conducting such an experiment typically involves:
- Setting up a controlled environment for swinging the mass
- Preparing strings of various lengths
- Measuring and recording the time for multiple rotations at each length
- Calculating angular velocity for each trial
- Plotting the results to visualize the relationship between ω² and 1/L
- Analyzing the data to confirm or refine the theoretical model
Through such experiments, students and researchers can gain a deeper appreciation for the underlying principles of physics and develop skills in data analysis and interpretation. This practical approach to learning physics helps bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world applications, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of the natural world.
Puppy’s head ballooned after cruel owner tied string around her neck
Poor pooch Nancy, who was discovered by Animal Aid Unlimited in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, was in such a bad condition that they feared she would die from choking.
Her head had swollen to nearly twice its size after a piece of string was found tightly around her neck.
**WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT IN VIDEO**
The string, which they suspected had been there for a long time, had tightened significantly, and sliced her neck.
In the graphic clip, animal aid workers show the extent of her injuries, with the deep lacerated wound seeping and covered in flies.
Dog in India whose head swelled up like a ballon after cruel owner tied string around it
It is believed her head had swollen so much because the rope had cut off her circulation.
Her blood-matted fur had started to fall out too, with her rescuers reckoning she could have died if she hadn’t been found.
India’s Animal Aid Unlimited told in a video: “We rescued this baby with a life-threatening neck wound, possibly caused by someone tying a string around her neck as a puppy, and never removing it. ”
The shocking footage upset many animal lovers, who took to YouTube to tell of their horror.
One wrote: “How did the dog even survive this? You’d think that would also cut the blood circulation to and from the brain.”
While another said: “Omg thats so sad! No one ever took that off her neck? Why aren’t people more respectful of animals.”
But thankfully in the clip, the Animal Aid Unlimited team, who regularly share videos of their rescues, came to her aid by removing the string wrapped around the neck.
Using two pairs of scissors, they cut off the string but are astonished by how small it had gotten around her neck.

Nancy’s rescuers said she could have choked
One of the workers said: “This is the string that was around her neck. As you can see it is really small. and really tight.”
Cleaning the wound using a disinfectant, they remove her blood matted fur as the dog stands patiently.
They are then seeing bandaging her and giving her a well-earned treat.
Later in the clip, the charity told how her deep wound started to heal and the swelling reduced – before showing her incredible transformation.

Bouncing along, Indian Pariah dog Nancy looks like a completely different dog.
Wagging happily, there is little sign of her previous trauma – with her head reduced to her normal size.
By the closing scenes of the clip, you can see nearly all her fur has grown back as she plays with other pups at the rescue centre.
Viewers on YouTube were amazed by her transformation.

Nancy’s swelling has reduced now
One wrote: “Thank you so much, Animal Aid Unlimited. The work you do is from the heart and so filled with love. You can always tell how important it is when you see the animals thriving after the healing. Bless you!”
While another added: “You guys are awesome!! I almost cried at the beginning.”
Her story comes after Express. co.uk told how a devastated owner was taking his pet dog on a road trip after she was diagnosed with cancer.
Pooch Bella was given just six months to live so owner Robert decided to take a year off work to travel with her before she passed away.
The Physics of Swinging a Mass on a String for Fun
OK, there is one more thing to look at. What about the relationship between the angular velocity and the length of the string? Looking at the force diagram above, there is only a component of the tension force acting in the horizontal direction. This means the net horizontal force can’t be zero. In fact, it has to be equal to the mass (m1) multiplied by the acceleration. In this case, the mass is accelerating to the right since it is moving in a circle. The circular acceleration would be the product of the angular velocity squared (we like to use the symbol ω for this) and the radius of the circle. Notice that the radius of the circle is not the length of the string—instead it is the length of the string multiplied by the cosine of θ (to get that adjacent side of the triangle). Putting this together, I get the following.
This equation says that the square of the angular velocity should be proportional to one divided by the length of the string. That seems simple enough to test. All I need to do is to swing the mass around with different length strings (the length from the top of the tube to the mass). I can do this by watching a small piece of tape at the bottom of the tube to make sure the length is constant. Of course I need to also keep the masses constant. I can determine the angular velocity by measuring the time it takes the mass to make one rotation. The angular velocity will then bey 2π divided by this time.
I did this for five different lengths using a hanging mass of 50 grams and a swinging mass of 15.8 grams. Here is a plot of ω squared vs. 1/L:
That looks fairly linear. But the important part is the slope. Looking back at the relationship between ω2 and 1/L, the proportionality constant should be M2g/m1. I know the masses and I know g, so this constant should be 31 m/s2. The linear fit has a slope of 43 m/s2—so not quite the same, but still close.
Still, if this was a student lab report, I think that data would be acceptable. I’m still slightly concerned that the swinging angle isn’t constant and this slope isn’t closer to the expected value. I have a feeling that there might be some friction between the string and the rotating glass rod. Friction at the contact point would mean that the tension in the string at the swinging mass is not M2g, but something else. Maybe I need to come up with a different method to measure the tension.
Honestly, this is a great reason why you should always work through the lab experiments—even if you are pretty sure you know how stuff works. You just never know how things will turn out.
What’s the Best String Trimmer Head?
Under normal use, you need to advance your string trimmer’s nylon cutting string whenever the tool isn’t cutting effectively. That happens every few minutes or even quicker in tall grass and weeds. What that entails varies from model to model, with some requiring far less work than others. In our tests, those that score well for ease of use reflect how simple it was for our experts to load a model’s head and advance the string. Some models also allow you to swap the original head with a different aftermarket head, about $20. No matter the type, the best-performing string trimmers cut with dual strings rather than a single string. Here’s a closer look at the different head choices.
Traditional Heads
These are the most common—and often a major source of frustration. Inside is a spool that you need to wrap long lengths of string around. Some trimmers come with the spool preloaded, but it might not be enough to get you through a season of cutting. Once the spool is loaded, you feed about 6 inches of line through holes on the trimmer head. Each time the string wears down, the trimmer head will advance a bit of string automatically or you’ll need to advance more string manually. If a sharp object cuts your string down to the base or if the auto-feed isn’t keeping up, you’ll need to open the head and advance the string manually.
Bump Heads
These work much like traditional heads but they’re spring-loaded and have a large button on the outside of the housing. Once you’ve loaded the spool with string, you can simply bump the trimmer head against the ground while the head is spinning to auto-advance the line each time it wears down, without needing to take the head apart.
Locking Heads
These are the fastest to reload. Instead of housing a spool, there’s a simple disc that has a hole through which you feed a shorter, precut length of string that locks into place. There’s no wrestling with long lengths of line. Then simply replace the line with another precut piece each time it wears down. But you need to buy packages of precut string or cut it yourself from a larger spool.

Sai Sin and the Sacred White Thread
If you’re a regular visitor to Thailand, there is a good chance you’ve had white cotton bracelets tied round your wrists at some stage during your travels. This cotton thread has been blessed in advance by a Buddhist monk and is known as ‘sai sin‘. The sai sin is supposed to provide protection and good health to the person wearing it. The colour of the thread is usually white because it represents purity in Buddhism although other colours including red may be used depending on the region you are in and the circumstances. But the sacred white thread isn’t just worn on the wrist. If you visit a Thai temple on important Buddhist holidays, you may see grid-lines of white string attached to the main Buddha images.
Sai sin in Buddhist ceremonies
Sai sin is present in a range of ceremonies in Thailand including weddings and funerals as well as blessing ceremonies when people move into a new home. At traditional weddings in Thailand the thread connects around the heads of the couple being married. Friends and family will also tie sai sin bracelets around the wrists of the newlyweds. At some Thai funerals, the white thread may be circled three times around the crematorium to wish the deceased good luck and protection in the next life.
At larger ceremonies there is often one big ball of string which is first tied around a Buddha image before being passed along to the monks in attendance. From there, the thread is passed along to everybody else in attendance. With each individual holding their hands in a wai, the thread is looped around each person. The thread may be strung around a person’s fingers or it can be looped around their head. The important thing is that the thread links everybody to the monks and the Buddha image. The chanting of the monks and the associated merit is then symbolically passed along the thread reaching all of the people in the congregation.
The significance of the circle
The sai sin thread carries merit and protection. When the thread forms a circle the protective power is believed to be stronger because the circle is continuous.
The power of three
Three is a significant number in Buddhism because it represents the Triple Gem or the Three Jewels of Buddhism: Buddha, Dharma (the teachings of Buddha) and Sangha (the monkhood). When Thai Buddhists enter a temple they will often kneel in front of the main Buddha image and bow three times whilst placing their palms on the floor before bringing their hands together to form a respectful wai. The significance of three in Buddhism means that if sai sin is tied around your wrists, you should ideally keep it on for at least three days.
Sai sin etiquette
You don’t have to be Buddhist to accept sai sin so think of it as a good luck charm if somebody ties the cotton bracelet to your wrist. Never refuse sai sin if it is offered. To do so would be disrespectful to the person offering. If somebody thinks enough of you to want to tie sai sin around your wrists, it is an act of hospitality and should be accepted with grace.
Sai sin may be attached to your wrists by monks or by ordinary people depending on the circumstances. If you are at a temple and a monk ties sai sin around your wrists, you should make a small donation (at least 20 Baht) to one of the donation boxes you will see on display. Women aren’t allowed to touch monks and if you watch a monk attaching sai sin to a woman’s wrist you will notice how careful he is not to make contact with the lady.
If somebody does attach a sai sin bracelet to your wrists, don’t think that you have to keep it there for months on end or until it falls off. If you can keep it on for at least three days, that is ideal and means you have benefited from the merit bestowed on you. Old traditions also say that you should gently untie the thread when removing it rather than cutting it.
DIY Centriphone whips iPhone around your head on a string
Possibly the most insane iPhone accessory ever made for the accident-prone is this: the Centriphone. We saw the results of this contraption in action not too long ago – it creates a sort of bullet-time video using the slow-motion capabilities of the iPhone or GoPro camera being flung around in a circle. Super slow motion and movement of the camera create a fantastic result – and one that’s now entirely DIY and open source. Today we have the making-of video and instructions.
Back on the 5th of February, we described this project as DIY Bullet Time with your smartphone (and a prayer). We’re still not entirely convinced that we’re not going to end up tossing our devices over a cliff.
But the draw is too strong! This project is too excellent!
As such, we’ll sit back and watch the making-of video too.
It’s like a tiny kite with an iPhone attached with a rubber band.
How very simple!
To get the gist of the whole project in a single image, you’ll want to look hither:
What’s most important here is that everything is connected solidly. Attaching the iPhone with a string instead of a rubber band could result in the iPhone being flung into a pile of rocks – working with overly-thin string for the flinging could result in the same.
While the creator – Nicolas Vuignier – has been convinced by friends to create a market-ready solution, he’s also released the plans for the 3D-printed model to GitHub. You can find all open source links via the Centriphone Open repository.
Users are also invited to download the DIY plans – not just 3D printing – to cut a Centriphone out of wood, or something similarly light yet robust.
Again, exercise all caution when attempting to capture a video such as the one you’ve seen above. SlashGear isn’t responsible for your smashed camera, nor is Vuignier. You can do whatever you want in life – it is you who will be accepting the consequences.
All About Guitar String Dampeners and Fret Wraps
In this guide, we will look at:
- What string dampeners and fret wraps are
- Why some guitarists consider using string dampeners cheating
- Popular string dampeners and what to look for
- How to get started using a string dampener
Whether you’ve never heard of string dampeners before or are wondering how to get started with one, this guide is for you.
What are String Dampeners?
A string dampener is exactly what it sounds like: a device that sits on your fretboard and dampens your strings. There are a few different designs, but they all aim to do the same job, keep your guitar nice and quiet.
There are a few ways guitarists use string dampeners and I’ll go through the different ways to give you an idea whether one would suit you.
The most common way guitarists use string dampeners is in the studio when recording lead parts. For any parts that don’t use the open strings, string dampeners can significantly reduce the amount of string and fret noise during the recording.
A tiny amount of string noise can ruin an otherwise perfect take, so a string dampener can be used to keep the strings quiet while you focus on recording the best take possible.
The other common way guitarists use string dampeners is during live performances. This isn’t as common as studio use, but at some performances, you might notice a string dampener ready to go on the guitar’s headstock.
As you can see in the above photo, Guthrie Govan usually has a string dampener hanging over his headstock to use as a string dampener. While he may slide this over the strings for some parts of his performance, in that picture it’s still impacting his tone as I’ll explain next.
Why Use a String Dampener
There are two ways a string dampener can clean up your playing (even if you use perfect technique). I’ll explain each way so you can get the most out of any string dampener you buy.
Suppressing sympathetic resonance and overtones
Guitars are imperfect instruments. Pickups hum, guitar amps feedback, and strings vibrate when they’re not meant to.
While you may not have heard the term ‘sympathetic resonance’ before, you may have heard it on your guitar. Sympathetic resonance is the fancy way of saying “when something vibrates, something else vibrates as well”.
Have you ever noticed that sometimes if you pick a note, a different string starts vibrating? That’s sympathetic resonance in action.
Try this: without touching or muting any of the strings, pick the low E string really hard. Now lightly touch each individual strings and pay attention to any that feel like they’re vibrating.
The chances are you will notice the B string has started vibrating. Or pick the open B string hard and see what happens. The low E string may vibrate.
There are notes across the fretboard that will cause some open strings to start vibrating. While you may not notice this while you play, it does affect your overall tone.
When recording, sympathetic resonance can turn an otherwise perfect tone into a ‘pretty-good’ tone. But you’ll only notice how much of an impact it has on your tone when you properly mute everything.
While proper muting technique can eliminate a lot of this vibration, it cannot eliminate all of it.
Here is a big source of sympathetic resonance that cannot be removed with technique:
See those lengths of string behind the nut? You can’t mute them while playing and they will vibrate depending on what you play.
The harder you play or the louder you have your amp, the more these string lengths will impact your tone. You may not notice it, but you will notice the difference when those strings are properly muted.
I was shocked when I first placed a string dampener on those strings. I had no idea those tiny lengths vibrating could have any impact on my tone, but a quick A/B test confirmed that it did.
But if you place a string dampener on those strings (or foam or a piece of cloth behind the strings), it will eliminate any possible vibrations and clean up your tone during recording or live performances.
This is why guitarists like Guthrie Govan always have string dampeners or hair ties on the headstock. Even if they never move them over the strings while playing, they’re always suppressing vibration that would impact their tone.
So even if you have no interest in using a string dampener to mute your strings while playing, I highly recommend putting something in place to eliminate sympathetic resonance behind the nut.
Suppressing String Noises
Even if you have fantastic muting techniques, using a string dampener when playing any leads is a good idea.
Why? Try this test:
Use your picking hand to mute all the strings near the bridge. Now use your fretting hand to hammer-on hard to any note. What do you hear?
On top of the sound of your finger hitting the string and the string hitting the fret, you will hear a note sustain.
The note you hear is the string vibrating from the nut to your finger as shown below:
We don’t notice this during normal playing because the main notes are far louder. But they’re always there in the background.
Every time you place a finger onto a string, the string will vibrate from the nut to the fret before your finger. That means even if we don’t notice these notes, they impact our tone.
By using a string dampener while playing any parts that don’t use the open strings, you can eliminate these background notes.
If you’re planning on recording anything that doesn’t use open strings, a string dampener can clean up your recordings – even if you already use perfect muting techniques!
Are String Dampeners Cheating?
Whenever you hear somebody see or mention a string dampener or fret wrap, you will also hear people saying that it’s cheating. You will hear people say things like “real guitarists don’t need them”, “[amazing guitarist’s name] doesn’t use one” or “it’s a crutch for poor technique”.
Instead of tearing somebody apart for using one, let’s take a level-headed look at whether string dampeners are cheating or not.
A string dampener is a tool, just like a capo, tuner, or pick. Are those tools cheating, too? Let’s look at other tools guitarists use and whether they’re cheating or not:
Is using a capo cheating? If somebody said “capos are just for people who have poor technique and can’t be bothered learning new chords”, you might give them a strange look. While some guitarists do use capos to cover up their limited chord knowledge, it’s a bit far-fetched to say that using a capo is cheating.
A capo is a useful tool to let you play in new ways, come up with new ideas, or transpose songs quickly to match a vocalist’s needs. There are plenty of reasons why capos are useful.
Is using a guitar tuner cheating? Do you hear people say “tuners are for tone-deaf people”? Surely a pedal that tells you if your string is out-of-tune is cheating, right? Why don’t you just learn to tune by ear without any reference pitch?
Nobody says tuners are cheating because it’s obvious that they’re useful. While you might be able to tune your guitar by ear, tuners are far more precise. They’re useful tools and guitarists who use them instead of tuning by ear are not cheats.
Is using a guitar pick cheating? It makes a lot of things far easier to play, so it’s a cheat, right? “What, you’re not good enough to play everything with your fingers? Picks are cheating!”.
A pick is a tool that allows you to play things that would be ridiculously difficult or outright impossible without one. While that sounds like cheating, it’s clear that guitarists don’t call out picks as cheats.
The more you think about it, the easier it is to find other tools that could be called cheats. Light string gauges is a cheat to make it easier to play bends. Low action is a cheat to play faster. Noise gate pedals are cheats to make you sound better. Guitar amps are cheats that take your thin and weak tone and transform it into something better. Frets are cheats to improve your intonation – show me a violin with frets.
The key point I want to make is that we use tools all the time to improve our tone and make playing guitar easier. Whether you choose to use a string dampener or not is a choice you can make, just like using a capo, tuner, or pick. Tools can be used for good reasons, or they can be used to hide poor technique or laziness.
To call a tool such as a string dampener, capo, or guitar tuner a cheat is lazy thinking.
As explained earlier, even if you use perfect muting techniques, your strings are still going to vibrate in ways you don’t want them to. Dampening the strings past the nut isn’t cheating – it’s fixing a flaw in the way guitars are designed.
Cheating what?
Guitarists can be competitive. It’s pretty standard to see a guitarist watch a video of somebody else play and scoff: “I can do better”. But music isn’t a competition. It isn’t a sport where there are winners and losers. There aren’t any Gold medals to hand out.
A guitarist who uses a string dampener to make a complicated eight finger tapping sequence sound cleaner for a recording isn’t cheating. If the string dampener makes it easier to express his ideas in his music, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s not cheating because music isn’t a competition.
Other people say string dampeners are cheating the guitarist who uses one. The idea is that the string dampener is holding the guitarist back and preventing them from learning ‘proper’ technique.
For some guitarists, that’s true. Some guitarists do use string dampeners to avoid learning proper muting techniques. But even in those cases, the guitarist can easily go back and learn those techniques. There’s nothing wrong with using a fret wrap as a temporary crutch to help guitarists express themselves.
The key point to remember is that string dampeners are just tools you can use or not use. There are no rules when it comes to playing guitar, so you’re not cheating if you use one.
Best Guitar String Dampeners
There are a few different options if you’re looking at using a string dampener. I’ll go through all of the most popular options so you can decide which is right for you.
Hair ties or scrunchies (the DIY approach)
The cheapest option is surprisingly common. Typical hair ties or scrunchies work surprisingly well at muting your strings while you play.
If you’re a woman or you live with a woman, the chances are there will be multiple hair ties lying around your house right now. You can try one out right now and see what all the fuss is about.
While hair ties don’t work as well as a fret wrap designed specifically for muting guitar strings, they do a good enough job for you to mute your strings when you need to. I’ve seen plenty of photos of Guthrie Govan using hair ties.
FretWraps by GruvGear
The most popular option for string dampeners are the FretWraps designed by GruvGear. These provide far more padding than a typical hair tie and come in multiple sizes to properly fit your guitar’s neck.
The extra padding in these fret wraps means you get better control over muting your strings. With one of these in place, it’s possible to play very aggressively or loosely without worrying about sympathetic resonance or string noise.

While Michael Angelo Batio (MAB) is a technically brilliant guitarist, I couldn’t help but poke some fun at his string dampener in this article.
In truth, it’s a very well designed string dampener that uses a clamp system to allow quick apply or release onto the strings:
You can see him use these dampeners with his double or quadruple-neck guitars.
They work extremely well, but at a cost. The reason I poked some fun at this option in that other article is that they’re quite expensive.
You can pick up a handful of hair ties for a few dollars, or a 3-pack of FretWraps for around $30, while the MAB String Dampener will cost you $100.
It’s a great design, but for almost all guitarists you’ll get just as good results for a lot less money using a standard fret wrap.
Using a String Dampener
A string dampener can be a helpful tool in cleaning up your tone. Even if you only use it to suppress sympathetic resonance past the nut, your recordings and your live tone will sound better.
While it’s important to develop good muting techniques, a string dampener can be used to assist with muting.
Some guitarists will still tell you that string dampeners are cheating, but music isn’t a competition. Use whatever tool you want to help you express your music.

Top String Tuesday: LaxAllStars Top String
This week I wanted to bring you something special in honor of Veteran’s Day and the good ol’ US of A. Now, I can’t take credit for the creation of this top string. Our very own Michael Allen sent me a photo and suggested it may make a great TST… He was right, obviously, so I wanted to break it down through an easy to follow photo tutorial.
I am a visual learner and felt that with the ins and outs of this top string it would be best to stay away from the video this week and just take you through step by step so that you can follow along at your own pace.
The LaxAllStars Top String is a spin off of the Chenango Top String I strung up in the first week of TST. The difference between the two is the LaxAllStars top features a little flair through the stringing of the second piece of top string. I’m not going to lie to you and say I didn’t do this just for looks, but I will say that I have found that the LaxAllStars top string rounds out the top of the pocket a bit more than the Chenango Top String through the tension that the bottom corner of the star adds to the mesh. I actually like the shape of this pocket a bit more as it eliminates the potential for a slower release that a Chenango runs the risk of creating if you string your channel too tight.

My suggestion: give them both a try and see which one you like best. Follow along with the steps below to string your own.
Step 1: Start by stringing up the first top string just like you would when stringing a Chenango. Don’t know how? Check out my tutorial.
String 1 is just like a Chenango.
I like to start my Chenango Top String in the third sidewall hole from the top. The lower you go, the tighter the channel will be and you will start running into release issues.
3 from the top.
Step 2: Add your second top string.
Second top string in the second top string hole.
Step 3: The second top string goes through the first top string hole. Make sure you string from the front of the head to the back.
String 2 through the front of the head.
Step 4: String the second top string through the back of the second diamond on your 9 diamond row of mesh.
Through the back of the second diamond.
Step 5: This is where the star takes shape. Wrap the top string around the back of the sidewall, placing it through the outside of the second sidewall hole. The string will continue up to the second top string hole where the first Chenango top string has secured the mesh to the head.
Around the back of the sidewall and up to the second top string hole.
Step 6: String the top string through the back of the second top string hole and out the front.
Up to the second top string hole.Through the back and out the front.
Step 7: String the top string underneath the fold of the middle diamond (the 5th diamond on the 9 diamond row) and then back through the front of the third top string hole. This step is the same when stringing the middle two top string holes in a Chenango pocket.
Under the 5th diamond and back through the front of the head.
Step 8: Run the top string out through the inside of the first sidewall hole.
Through the inside to the outside of the head.
Step 9: String the top string through the front of the second diamond from the right side of the head (8th from where you started stringing). The string will be brought from the front of the diamond to the back of the mesh and up to the remaining top string hole.
Through the front and out the back.
Step 10: String the top string through the back of the remaining top string hole and then down to the second sidewall hole – stringing through the inside of the sidewall hole to the outside of the head.
Around the back of the top string hole and down to the second sidewall hole.
Step 11: String the top string around the outside of the head and up to the back of the second top string hole. Pull the string through the back of the second top string hole and out the front.
From the outside of the head to the back of the second top string hole.
Step 12: String the top string back through the front of the next top string hole and out to the back of the head.
String the top string back through the next top string hole.
Step 13: String the sidewall out through the second sidewall and tie it off.
Run the top string through the second sidewall hole and tie it off.
Step 14: Go out and show off your LaxAllStars Top String.
There you have it.
Be sure to check back next week for another edition of Top String Tuesday and, as always, stay laxy my friends.

How to hang fish
- Details
Views: 4771
During the smoking process, the fish can break off, so hang it up very carefully. The most common way of hanging: at the end of the tail, in front of the tail fin, a strong knot is tied with a hemp cord 1-1.5 mm in diameter (Fig. 23).
Fig. 23. Hanging fish for smoking
This allows all types of fish to be hung, except eels. This is one of the fastest and most reliable types of suspension. It is used to smoke fish whose gills have not been removed. With this method of hanging on the body of the fish, bruises do not form, since the fish hangs head down, there is no need for a long cleaning of metal hooks. You can only use the cord once!
Fig. 24. Upper knot and loop
For smoking, the fish should be laid out on the table so that it touches its tails and heads. Tying is done with one cord. To speed up the work from the suspended coil of cord, you must constantly release the thread. Observing an equal distance between the fish (15-20 cm, depending on the size of the fish), the end of the tail is threaded into a loop tied with threads (“lasso”) and tightened. After a sufficient number of fish have been fixed on one cord in this way, it must be cut in the middle between the fish. Both ends formed are connected by a knot (“top knot”) (Fig. 24). Loops 8-10 cm long are formed, through which a metal or wooden bar is threaded. Notches are made on the bar, which determine the distance between the fish and thereby prevent contact and adhesion to each other. If there are no such notches, then before starting to smoke the fish it is necessary to move it apart. The easiest way is to string the whole fish onto rods,
representing stainless steel rods with a diameter not exceeding 8 mm.The fish is strung on these rods in the head region in the direction from the abdomen to the back (if fish are strung through the eye holes, they quickly fall). This is the fastest stringing method. The fish must be at a certain distance from each other, then the smoke can spread evenly. White spots are formed at the contact points of the fish. The rods are sharpened on both sides. It is recommended to pierce fish carcasses, regardless of the type, over the head in the direction from the abdomen to the back and thus string them onto the rod.
Devices for stringing fish with cold smoking are shown in fig. 25.
Another method is to use hooks on stainless steel transverse rods or poles. The most famous is the S-shaped hook. It is thrust into the fish carcass overhead in the direction of the back so that the fish’s head is on the hook. If the head is tilted in the opposite direction, then during the smoking process it can come off, and the fish will fall off the hook.
The use of hooks designed by the Bavarian forevod Retzer (Fig.26) allows you to easily, quickly and neatly hang the fish. This is done like this: two metal strips 4 cm wide and a length corresponding to the width of the oven are firmly fastened with screws at a distance that allows you to move the hooks between them, putting on both sides of the carcass strips.
Fig. 25. Devices for stringing fish with cold smoking
The fish is planted in the head area from the side of the opened abdomen on both spines. In this case, the spine is between both spines. The spines are slightly bent upwards so that the fish cannot slip off them. The V-shaped extension towards the middle of the shaft opens the fish abdomen, prevents the peritoneum from joining, thereby ensuring uniform coloration of the internal cavities and the vertical position of the fish.
Fig. 26. Retzer hook
Durable stainless steel double hooks. They are of two types: double and tracheal (Fig. 27). In both cases, on the hook itself, which is rounded at the top, two spikes are attached at a distance of several centimeters under each other for hanging the fish.
In one embodiment, these tenons are reinforced in the same direction as the top round for the hook. In the other, both tenons form a right angle in the direction of the curvature of the hook.
This is done in order to hang the fish from the side of the abdomen or from the side of the carcass.
Both thorns must be driven into the spine of the fish from the side of the abdomen. Trout and whitefish can be hung up or down.
Double hook with spikes at the level of the top curvature for hanging, usually used with a curved curve along the profile of the hook. This bend should be under the hanging bow and on top of the cleats. Then he maximizes the vertical position of the suspended fish.
Fig. 27. Double and tracheal hooks
Hooks come in a wide variety of shapes. One of them is a double-stranded wire, the lower ends of which diverge at an angle of 50 degrees. The ends of the wire are sharpened and pierce the body of the fish under the head on the left and right in the region of the spine.
The tracheal hook shown last in the row is very handy when smoking portioned trout. It is inserted from above or below through the mouth and pushed around the spine.
Another shape of the tracheal hook is not shown in the figure. A fairly thick wire must be bent in such a way that it forms the shape of a tweezer; the lower ends are pointed and bent almost at right angles, forming spines. For small, light fish, a simple stainless wire, rounded at the lower end so that it forms a simple pointed spike, will suffice. The upper suspension hook can be bent to the shape of the frame bar. These are the most common types of hooks used to hang fish carcasses.
Some of the same hooks are also suitable for hanging carcass halves. Large fish, especially bream and carp with wide backs, are often cut lengthwise. Such carcasses, cut in half, can be strung on rods. But in all cases, the use of hooks is most advisable. For hanging the fish divided in half, not an S-shaped hook, but a double hook. From single hooks, halves of carcasses fall.
For hanging large carp, bream, trout or pike bogs about 5 cm wide, they can be strung on the rods from the back. When smoking pieces, in all cases it is advisable to hang them in the oven without removing the skin, otherwise the fish may fall. Only when using double hooks can the skin be removed from the fish. However, in this case, the width of the piece should not be much greater than the length of each individual spike. Tracheal hooks can be used to hang loose pieces of skin.
Another special way of hanging fish for smoking. It consists in hanging pieces wrapped in a fishing net or tied with bast.In this form, they do not break off. At the end of smoking, a beautiful imprint is left on the pieces of fish wrapped in a net or bast. At the same time, this means that the smoke could not evenly penetrate all areas of the fish pieces.
Before hanging the fish in the oven, rinse again with water.
DIY beaded beads
Someone thinks that website promotion and promotion is ordered only if any goods are offered for sale on it.In fact, many blogs can also generate income from the advertisements they publish. But in order for the income to begin to grow, you need to take care of the growth of the popularity of the site, and for this you need to order its promotion. But what can you blog about? In fact, you can lead it on any topic, for example, even about creating products with your own hands or even with children. And present them in the form of a story. For example, like this! Today I will tell you how I made beaded beads with my daughter Masha! And why they now have to be redone. How important it is to choose the right materials for making beads.
I visited a handicraft shop in order to buy the necessary threads for curtains. And the daughter started looking at windows with different colored interests. The child, of course, cannot tear himself away from the seductive display case with multi-colored beads. Seeing such an interest from my daughter, I decided, why not start making beads together? As a result, in addition to the threads we came for, we bought pink pearl beads, seed beads, and, on the advice of a sales assistant, an elastomeric thread.
DIY beaded beads
I strung the beads and beads on an elastomeric thread. It is hard, so you can string it without a needle. This thread has the ability to stretch. Therefore, when putting on beads, the thread can be stretched a little and put on over the head without a special fastener. ATTENTION! Here’s my mistake! Elastomer thread is not suitable for beads. In any case, for children. Because when stretched, the thread still does not return to its original size. And when the beads were ready, and the daughter put them on and off 15-20 times, an empty space of thread without beads formed! About 2-3 cm.And this already does not look pretty. And each time this distance increased. That is, the thread has stretched out.
I chose any pattern of beads – 7 beads 1 bead, 7 beads 1 bead and so on. Now you need to disassemble and string the beads again. No longer on an elastomeric thread, but on a special line for beading. In addition to the fishing line, I also bought a special lock that will fasten the beads at the back.
So, to summarize. To make beads from beads with your own hands, you will need: Beads of the desired color, beads (optional), a line for beading, a clasp, and a great mood, and imagination. As you can see, making beads with your own hands is not at all difficult. The main thing is to know some secrets!
How to fit the jig head? How to properly attach it to different baits? Installation rules
If a novice fisherman first thought about using rubber lures in fishing, then he will definitely face the fact that they need to somehow be attached to the hook. For this, there are jig heads of different sizes and shapes.
Basic rules
The jig head is a lead lead sinker with hooks that is used in spinning fishing for predator fish. Classified by lead weight and shape. There are fixtures with floating and fixed heads. The second type of hooks provides greater dynamism of the silicone bait being put on.
- The basic rule of thumb is to choose the right lead. The stronger the current, the heavier the jig should be. The hook size depends on the diameter of the bait.
- It is quite easy to attach a jig head to any kind of silicone bait. To do this, the hook is applied to the base of the twister or vibrotail, and if the sting fits in size, then the rubber is strung on the hook.
- In addition to the open hook jig, there are non-hooks. This is a kind of rig where the sting is hidden inside the silicone.
- Additionally, any jig head can be equipped with doubles or tees. Thus, the fixation of the silicone on the hook increases, it will definitely not slip and will be securely fixed. Also, the fish will be able to hook not only on the main hook, but also on additional stings.
- In addition to all of the above, it must be borne in mind that the larger the bait that is used with the jig head, the slower the rig will sink.
- Another rule to remember is that the less active the fish, the less the sinker should weigh.
- The color of the jig head does not particularly affect the performance of the tackle, but some fishermen believe that bright red bait with blades can attract more attention of predators.
- Depending on what method will be used for fishing with a spinning rod – upstream, downstream, another way – you need to choose a jig head and the type of silicone bait.
Fastening instructions
Installation of jig lures requires only experience. In theory, there is nothing complicated about the nozzle itself. For the simplest option, you will need a bait, a double and a sinker . A more complex method involves the use of a winding ring. In this case, you will have to assemble all the items of equipment yourself.
Now they are producing new versions of jig heads, where the equipment is not simple, but has a wire on the hook, which holds the silicone very well and does not tear it when inserted.
Correctly put the twister on the hook so that it goes out from the ribbed side of the bait.If you do the opposite, then when the nozzle falls to the bottom, the tip will collect a bunch of debris.
An elastic band on a jig head with a winding hook is placed in the same way as other lures for predatory fish, only the sinker is attached here with the help of a ring, which gives the nozzle more dynamism. Silicone lures are put on not only on the jig head, but also on offset hooks. Fishing tackle of this type allows you to hide the sting so that a non-hook bait is created. This is necessary when fishing in water bodies where there are a lot of algae and other plants.
The special shape of the hook prevents snagging, but also complicates the installation of silicone baits on it. Both a twister and a vibrotail can be attached to the offset hook. Thanks to their streamlined shape, they pass well between the algae.
The hook itself is hidden inside, and this allows you to hook big fish without any problems.
When choosing a hook, you should attach the equipment to the bait and see if you can pull the sting out so that it comes out closer to the base.A short crochet hook will make this job easier if you can’t get the most correct size. The offset bend height should ideally not exceed the twister body diameter, because it should not stick out.
Install the offset tip so that it fits snugly against the silicone bait – if the hook protrudes, then there is a high probability that it will catch on various obstacles in the water. If, on the contrary, you overdo it, and the sting is fixed deep in the silicone, then it will be difficult for the fish to get to the hook, and the whole fishing will come to naught.
So that silicone baits do not quickly deteriorate when you put them on offset hooks, you need to be able to correctly select the weight of the sinker and the size of the step that rests on the head of the bait. By equipping them with the right weight, you can increase your catch.
Twister
Twister is a fishing lure made of high quality silicone.Used to catch different types of fish. Its effectiveness lies in the imitation of living creatures that live in water bodies. Modern baits such as twisters, scraps or slugs are made from edible silicone, the base of the bait is covered with special flavors that attract fish.
These lures are suitable for catching predators. You can catch the twister:
- perches;
- pike;
- pike perch;
- soms.
The sizes of the bait range from 3 to 30 cm. The latter are used for sea fishing for especially large fish species. Smaller models can also be found on the market. Some fishermen use these attachments for ice fishing. Peaceful fish, when hungry, bite well on twisters with a diameter of about 1-2 cm.
The most common material used to make a twister is soft plastic and silicone, although at first they were made from rubber, which was not very dynamic. Now this type of lure is widely used for fishing with microjig or spinning.
But here the question arises – how to properly put the twister on the jig head? To do this, you need to correctly select the sinker .Sinker heads are used to load plastic lures intended for fishing predatory fish with spinning reels.
First you need to take a silicone bait and compare it with the size of the hook. If you do not first estimate the size of fishing tackle, then the efficiency of jigging or spinning will decrease.
After trying on, the twister is turned on its side and the hook is inserted into the front of the bait.Having completely inserted the silicone snap on the hook, it is taken out. The jig head should be well fixed inside the twister. It is clear that the silicone will slip, no matter how you put it on, so the fishermen have come up with several ways to fix the bait to the hook.
- Use glue. The twister can not only slide, but also break at the beginning of the base – then it does not hold well on the hook, and the fish is poorly led to the bait. Some fishermen attach silicone to the jig with super glue, but it is very harmful and it is better to use another method.
- Fixing with a tee. We put one side of the hook on the bait, and put the eyelet over the jig ear. Thus, the bait is firmly fixed on the fishing rod.
- Double hook. If you string a twister onto a double and attach a removable sinker, then the silicone bait will fix very well in this way.
To put a twister on a jig head, it is not necessary to use the methods listed above – you can come up with your own, no less effective system.
Vibro tail
If the twister has a clear transition from the head to the main part of the lure, then the vibrotail does not have such a contrast, so it is more difficult to attach it to the jig head.
To put the ripper on the jig, you need to determine the place where the bait begins to taper. . It is this part that is motionless, and at the end of the base, you need to bring the hook out from the back.
We begin to string the vibrotail at the location of the mouth of the silicone bait. The denser the material, the thicker and longer the sting should be, and vice versa. It is not necessary for a large bait to have a heavy sinker – it depends on the type of fish you plan to catch and the fishing conditions.
Jig head with vibro-tail can be supplemented with doubles or tees . These types of hooks will not only help to fix the silicone bait, but also increase the chances of catching large predatory fish. But in order to string the ripper onto such hooks, you must first make punctures along the diameter of the double or tee. After all, improperly made holes will quickly ruin the silicone, and the vibrotail will become unusable.
Rubber fish
Regardless of the shape, all rubber lures fit on the jig head in the same way as the vibrating tails twisters. The secret to success is choosing the right hook size. Some fishermen, after putting the bait on the jig, pierce the tail with a ballpoint pen, awl or gypsy needle. This is done in order to increase the vibration of the rubber fish, because it is not known how the fish behave in a still unexplored reservoir.
Tips
Simple secrets for fishing with silicone baits:
- if there is not enough practice in stringing a twister or other rubber bait on the sting, then before putting the rig on the hook, you must first measure it and make the markings with a black marker, and only then string it;
- is easiest to start by mounting silicone on jig heads with a fixed sinker;
- it is unacceptable that the hook is larger in diameter than the base of the vibrotail;
- in water bodies clogged with algae and vegetation or in rocky terrain, use a snap-on rig;
- if you use doubles or tees for fishing, then you need to make holes for the hooks first.
These are simple tips that are sure to come in handy for novice fishermen. With experience, it will be possible to determine and choose the most convenient jig heads for use.
