What are the top stringing patterns for the Warrior Helix lacrosse head. How to choose the right mesh type for your playing style. Which stringing techniques improve ball control and shot power.
Understanding the Warrior Helix: Design and Features
The Warrior Helix is a popular lacrosse head known for its versatility and performance. To maximize its potential, players must understand its unique design elements:
- Wide face shape for improved ball control
- Reinforced sidewalls for added durability
- Strategic stringing holes for customizable pocket placement
- Lightweight construction for quick maneuverability
These features make the Helix suitable for various playing styles, from attackmen to midfielders. However, the key to unlocking its full potential lies in choosing the right stringing pattern and mesh type.
Selecting the Ideal Mesh for Your Warrior Helix
Choosing the appropriate mesh is crucial for optimizing your Warrior Helix’s performance. Consider these options:
Soft Mesh
Soft mesh offers excellent feel and ball control, making it ideal for players who prioritize precision passing and quick releases. It breaks in faster but may require more maintenance over time.
Semi-Soft Mesh
This versatile option provides a balance between feel and durability. It’s suitable for all-around players who need a consistent pocket in various weather conditions.
Hard Mesh
Hard mesh is known for its durability and consistency, especially in wet conditions. It’s preferred by players who value shot power and minimal pocket maintenance.
Performance Mesh
Advanced synthetic materials offer enhanced performance characteristics, such as improved weather resistance and faster break-in times. These options can be an excellent choice for serious players looking to gain an edge.
When selecting mesh for your Warrior Helix, consider your playing style, position, and local weather conditions to make the best choice.
Top Stringing Patterns for the Warrior Helix
The stringing pattern you choose can significantly impact your stick’s performance. Here are some popular options for the Warrior Helix:
Traditional Pocket
A classic choice that offers excellent ball control and a natural feel. It’s versatile and can be customized to suit various playing styles.
Mid-Low Pocket
This pattern places the pocket slightly lower in the head, providing a good balance between ball retention and quick release. It’s popular among midfielders and attackmen who need versatility in their game.
High Pocket
Placing the pocket higher in the head can improve shot accuracy and passing precision. This pattern is often favored by offensive players who prioritize quick stick skills.
Shifty Pocket
A more advanced stringing technique that creates a pocket that shifts as you cradle, offering excellent ball control and deception during play.
Experiment with different patterns to find the one that best complements your playing style and the Helix’s design.
Stringing Techniques to Enhance Performance
Mastering specific stringing techniques can help you optimize your Warrior Helix for peak performance:
- Channel creation: Use strategic knots to create a defined channel for improved ball control.
- Tension management: Vary the tension along the sidewall to achieve the desired pocket depth and whip.
- U-shape formation: Create a U-shaped pocket for better ball retention during cradling and dodging.
- Shooter setup: Properly place and tension shooting strings to fine-tune release and accuracy.
These techniques require practice and experimentation to perfect, but they can significantly enhance your stick’s performance when done correctly.
Customizing Your Pocket for Different Positions
Different positions on the field may benefit from specific pocket configurations:
Attackmen
Attackmen often prefer a deeper pocket with a mid to low placement for better ball control during dodging and quick stick maneuvers. A slightly higher whip can also aid in shot power and accuracy.
Midfielders
Versatility is key for midfielders. A mid-pocket with moderate depth and whip allows for smooth transitions between offense and defense, facilitating both passing and shooting.
Defensemen
While the Warrior Helix is not typically a defensive head, players in this position might opt for a higher, shallower pocket to promote quick passes and checks. Minimal whip is usually preferred for long clearing passes.
Remember that these are general guidelines, and personal preference should always be considered when customizing your pocket.
Maintenance Tips for Optimal Performance
Proper maintenance is essential to keep your Warrior Helix performing at its best:
- Regularly check and tighten loose strings
- Clean your mesh after playing in wet or muddy conditions
- Store your stick in a cool, dry place to prevent warping
- Periodically re-adjust your pocket to maintain consistency
- Replace worn-out mesh or strings to ensure optimal performance
By following these maintenance tips, you can extend the life of your stringing job and maintain consistent performance over time.
Advanced Stringing Techniques for Experienced Players
For players looking to take their Warrior Helix to the next level, consider these advanced stringing techniques:
Stack Stringing
This technique involves stacking multiple strings in a single sidewall hole to create a more defined pocket shape and improved ball control.
Wrapped Shooters
By wrapping your shooting strings with additional string or lace, you can fine-tune the release point and add texture to your pocket.
Custom Knots
Experimenting with different knot types, such as the triangle top string or barreled sidewalls, can provide unique pocket characteristics and improved durability.
These advanced techniques require patience and skill to execute properly but can result in a truly customized and high-performing stick.
Adapting Your Stringing for Different Game Situations
Consider how different game situations might influence your stringing choices:
Indoor vs. Outdoor Play
Indoor lacrosse often benefits from a deeper pocket and more whip due to the confined space and emphasis on quick stick skills. Outdoor play may require a shallower pocket for longer passes and shots.
Weather Conditions
Wet weather might necessitate a pocket with more hold to prevent slipping, while dry conditions allow for a faster release. Consider having multiple stringing setups for different conditions.
Face-Off Specialists
If you’re using the Warrior Helix for face-offs, a specialized stringing pattern with a defined channel and minimal whip can improve your success rate.
By adapting your stringing to various game situations, you can ensure optimal performance in any scenario.
Legal Considerations and Rule Compliance
When stringing your Warrior Helix, it’s crucial to stay within the rules of the game:
- Ensure your pocket depth complies with official regulations
- Avoid illegal stringing techniques that could result in penalties
- Be aware of any rule changes that might affect stringing requirements
- Consider having your stick checked by officials before important games
Staying informed about and compliant with stringing regulations will help you avoid unnecessary penalties and ensure fair play.
Experimenting and Finding Your Perfect Setup
The quest for the perfect stringing pattern is often a journey of experimentation and personal preference. Here are some tips for finding your ideal setup:
- Keep a stringing journal to track different patterns and their performance
- Seek advice from experienced players and stringers
- Don’t be afraid to make small adjustments to fine-tune your pocket
- Consider the playing style of professional players who use the Warrior Helix
- Be patient and give yourself time to adapt to new stringing patterns
Remember that what works best for one player may not be ideal for another. Trust your instincts and focus on what feels right for your game.
Resources for Further Learning
To continue improving your stringing skills and knowledge about the Warrior Helix, consider these resources:
- Online stringing tutorials and video demonstrations
- Lacrosse stringing forums and communities
- Local stringing workshops or clinics
- Warrior Lacrosse official resources and guides
- Books on advanced stringing techniques and theory
Continuous learning and practice will help you master the art of stringing and get the most out of your Warrior Helix.
By understanding the unique features of the Warrior Helix, selecting the right mesh, and experimenting with various stringing patterns and techniques, you can optimize this versatile head for your specific playing style and position. Remember that stringing is both an art and a science, requiring patience, practice, and a willingness to experiment. With dedication and attention to detail, you can create a pocket that enhances your skills and takes your game to the next level.
Warrior Mesh Session: Stringing a Warrior Cobra X and a Warrior Emperor with Matt Danowski and Drew
What happens when you get two of the game’s premier attackman with unstrung heads and two stringing kits? You get a lesson in how to tie up your rig in an appropriate fashion. Both Dino and Westy are seasoned vets when it comes to tying knots and burning fluff, so take notice of how they’re treating their spoon in the special sit-down session.
Matt Danowski: First you have to start out by loosening up the mesh. I typically play with soft mesh, but I’m going to string this up with hard mesh. Let me show you how to put a little power in your stick.
Drew Westervelt: Power?
Dino: Power is what I call Whip, because whip has a negative connotation. I’m stringing up the Warrior Cobra X, which I like because it’s a little wider through the middle, so it’s good for my transition pocket, where I can carry the ball moves low in the pocket, and it’ll sit under my U when I drop down low to shoot.
Westy: I’m playing with the Emperor, which I played with over the summer and liked a lot. The first thing I do is go 10 holes across the top, but I start by leaving the first loop a little loose, I don’t really know why.
Dino: I also string 10 holes across the top like Drew, one on each side and two per hole in the head along the top. My whole theory with the sidewall string is that I keep it tight at the top, then I make it loose as I go to the bottom.
Dino: See what I do when I singe my strings — I burn it first, and then I cut it.
Westy: You cut the string with the flame?
Dino: No, I burn it so it’s smooth. I don’t get the little bubble at the end and I don’t burn my fingers; my mom taught me better than that.
Westy: Look at baby hands over there.
Dino: I have milky soft hands.
Westy: I think on this one I’m going to go double early. That means I’m putting the sidewall looped through two holes of mesh, which will help the pocket sit deeper once it breaks in. This is an aggressive double right here — this is where the power comes in.
Dino: You don’t have power in your shot. You shoot skippers.
Westy: Only in Denver, off that beautiful grass.
Dino: How’d you get your pocket so deep already? Wow, his sidewall is better than mine. I’ll admit it. I actually don’t prefer it though. He doesn’t have the holes like I do in mine.
Westy: But that’s where your power is generated from.
Dino: This is it — Cobra X, strung up. Lotta power, no whip. Two-pointers all day.
Westy: Here’s my Emperor. Puts Matt’s to shame. Enjoy.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Weed Eater Head
Before setting out to purchase the best weed eater head, you’ll need to consider a few factors. This section explains each key consideration and provides a bit of background on what goes into replacing a weed eater head. Be sure to give this section a thorough look to choose the best head for your weed whacker.
Size
Unless you purchase directly from the weed eater’s manufacturer, you’re going to need to find a universal head. Many universal heads come with adapters that attach to nearly any weed eater.
Beyond the size of the head itself, the size of the weed eater string is a consideration, too. Many universal heads can handle string thicknesses between 0.065 inch and 0.095 inch, and heavier-duty models might tolerate 0.105-inch string or thicker. If you’re using a powerful gasoline-powered model, you might consider trading up to a larger diameter string, as it’s less likely to break while trimming.
Electric vs. Gas-Powered Head
There isn’t always a difference between weed eater heads for electric and gas-powered models, but when there are, it’s usually a deal-breaker. Many electric or battery-powered weed eaters use proprietary heads that snap onto the shaft, while weed eater heads for gasoline-powered models screw onto the shaft, in most cases.
If you’re able to put a screw-on head on your electric or cordless trimmer, it’s important to choose a light-duty model. Heavy-duty replacement heads put a lot of stress on the weed eater’s motor and may shorten the weed eater’s lifespan. This is far less of a concern with torquey gasoline-powered models.
Line-Feed Design
As the string on a weed eater spins and bumps into stones, stumps, landscaping blocks, and other objects, it breaks and needs replenishing. How the weed eater head feeds out more string depends on the model. When you replace your weed eater head, you get to choose the line-feed method.
There are three main types:
- Automatic feed weed eater heads, as the name suggests, release more string as needed without input from the user.
- Bump feed heads have buttons under them that release string when bumped on an object. For these devices to work properly, the head must be spinning when you bump it on a solid object like a stone or log.
- Fixed head string trimmers either require the user to manually replace the string or feature small blades instead of strings.
Automatic feeds are obviously the most convenient, but fixed heads have fewer moving parts, which makes them potentially more durable.
Blade Type
Some of the best weed eater heads feature blades in place of string. Blades cut through heavy brush and undergrowth faster than string, and they’re less likely to break. Most weed eater blades are plastic. Metal blades are also available, though they are less popular since they can easily damage landscaping and trees.
You may also find a wire brush rather than plastic or metal blades. These models are designed for trimming along driveways and stone paths. They’re heavy and best suited for gas-powered weed eaters.
Weed Eater Compatibility
You’ll probably replace your weed eater head with a universal-fit model. These heads work with most weed eaters, regardless of size or brand, as long as the weed eater has a reverse or left-hand thread shaft.
A reverse or left-hand-thread shaft requires the user to spin the weed eater head counterclockwise to tighten the head in place. It’s important to ensure the model you’re replacing also has reversed or left-hand threads. If not, you will have a hard time finding a replacement head for your unit.
Also, it’s worth noting that most replacement heads are designed to work with straight-shaft weed eaters only. Very few models work with curved shafts.
Our Top Picks
With a bit of background on the best weed eater heads, choosing the ideal model is far less complicated. Below is a selection of some of the best weed eater heads on the market. Be sure to compare each one carefully in order to make the best decision when choosing a product for your weed whacker.
As a note: All of the following models feature left-hand threads.

Anyone looking to replace the string head on their weed eater should consider Oregon’s 55-265 Trimmer Head Speed Feed replacement head. This product includes multiple adapters to work with a variety of straight-shaft weed eaters. It also supports string diameters of up to 0.105, which makes it a heavy-duty option.
Oregon’s “semi-matic” trimmer head attaches and feeds easily. To fill it with string, feed a length of 2 or 3 feet into one end and out the other until the head is in the middle. Simply hold the collar in place with one hand, and twist the head with the other, winding the string into place. The head automatically feeds string as needed.

When it comes to a replacement head that fits almost any weed eater and budget, Weed Warrior’s Push-N-Load 3 Blade Head is worth a look. This three-bladed head fits almost every weed eater, and its nylon blades make quick work of heavy grass and brush.
The kit comes with the necessary adapters for mounting the head to almost any weed eater, including models from Ariens, Echo, Green Machine, Homelite, Husqvarna, and more. It also comes with six nylon blades. And replacing those blades is easy: Just push the button holding the old blade in place, slide the old blade out, and slide the new one in its place.

A high-quality replacement head for a curved-shaft weed eater isn’t easy to find. MaxPower’s PivoTrim Universal Replacement might be the answer. It comes with adapters to fit most weed eaters, curved or straight. It also features three swiveling string mounts for attaching 0.080-inch or 0.095-inch string.
MaxPower’s head doubles the string over to create six cutting surfaces instead of the standard two or three. Replacing the string is easy: Push the old string through the swivel, and thread a new length through. And, because it’s so lightweight and straightforward, it works with electric weed eaters that have screw-type shafts.

Weed Warrior’s Brush Cutter replacement head includes three metal blades that swing out from the head. The blades’ serrated edges dig into thick stalks and other obstructions with ease. The blades are both durable and easy to replace. Just unscrew the three screws holding the two halves together, remove the old blades, replace them with new blades, and reassemble the halves.
The kit includes the hardware to attach the head to most gas-powered trimmers as well as electric models with screw-type shafts.

Some say less is more, and with Weed Warrior’s EZ Lock Head, that might be true. This simple, rugged weed eater head replacement features a straightforward, doubled-over string design, free from moving parts or complicated replacement procedures. Simply feed the string into the unit, double it over, and send it back out to lock it in place. It accepts line sizes between 0.08 inch and 0.095 inch.
The Weed Warrior is a universal-fit replacement for electric, cordless, and gas-powered trimmers with straight and curved shafts. This includes models from Echo, Stihl, Husqvarna, Redmax, Ryobi, and many more. It comes with the appropriate adapters for each.

For yards that alternate between brush and grass, a hybrid option like Pivotrim’s Rino Tuff Universal Hybrid String and Bladed head might be the tool for the job. This replacement head combines the best of both worlds, as it trims with both 0.095-inch string and three plastic blades. To absorb impact without breaking, the string swivels and the blades feature a pivoting design.
This hybrid kit comes with all the adapters necessary to fit most gas trimmers, including Ariens, Craftsman, Cub Cadet, Echo, Homelite, Husqvarna, Ryobi, Snapper, Stihl, and many more. While it could attach to a cordless or electric weed eater, it may be too heavy to work properly.

Not all weed eater heads can stand up to heavy-duty brush and growth. Grass Gator’s Brush Cutter is specially designed for these scenarios. Its three steel blades swing out from the cutter head and slice through heavy grass and growth with ease. The three heavy-duty steel blades are easy to replace once they become worn out or dull.
According to the manufacturer, Grass Gator’s brush cutter works with 99 percent of straight-shaft gas trimmers, and hardware for attachment is included. While this unit fits most weed eaters, it works best on gas-powered trimmers with 25cc engines or larger.

- Players can no longer cause a second orb to become non-interactable while carrying an Orb of Torment.
- Plaguefall
- You must now defeat the first three bosses of the dungeon before the door to Margrave Stradama opens on all difficulties.
- Developers’ note: The first two bosses of the dungeon were frequently being skipped in lower-difficulty dungeons, typically by groups who were trying to earn Renown much faster than intended. To improve players’ Renown earnings, we’ve also added a chance for Renown to be earned by completing layers in Torghast (see hotfix below).
- You must now defeat the first three bosses of the dungeon before the door to Margrave Stradama opens on all difficulties.
Items and Rewards
- Teleporter Repair Kits should no longer have a Unique count and will now stack to 50.
- Repaired Riftkeys will also now stack to 50.
- Developers’ note: Early in development, Teleporter Repair Kits and Repaired Riftkeys were only available from the vendor. Based on player feedback of not knowing if they were worth purchasing, we decided to have them drop occasionally as well. Now that these items dropped and became out of player’s control, we should have removed the unique cap on the Teleporter Repair Kits then. Also, since you have access to purchasing the Teleporter Repair Kits or Repaired Rift Keys, we are disabling them from going to mail if you loot one with a full inventory so they will no longer fill up your mailbox.
- The item levels of Conduits sold by the Rated PvP vendor have been corrected.
- Fixed an issue where the Salvaged Fusion Amplifier was not dropping for Marksmanship and Beastmaster Hunters.

- Shards of Domination
- Scouring Touch no longer incorrectly removes stealth type effects from the caster when applied to targets.
- The amount of Anima dropped by bosses in the Sanctum of Domination is now affected by achievements earned by upgrading your Covenant Sanctum.
- The Treatise: The Study of Anima and Harnessing Every Drop should now work on Korthia dailies, rares, and treasures as well as the Covenant Maw Assault quests.
- Developers’ note: The original goal was for the Treatise items to give you bonuses when returning to the 4 non-Maw zones or to the Maw proper for the Stygia Treatise. Korthia was themed to be part of the Maw during development and so it was not included. However, since we didn’t clarify that well and Korthia is abundant in Anima having not originated in the Maw, we are enabling this item’s bonus there as well. Looking forward, the Treatise: Relics Abound in the Shadowlands awarded at Tier 6 with The Archivists’ Codex only works on the four original zone factions as a bonus to players who want a way to speed up their reputation with these factions.
- The new socket adding item, Alloy-Warping Facetor and conduit upgrade item, Death-Bound Shard should now be purchasable by all characters on your account from Archivist Roh-Suir once one character has reached Tier 6 Research.

- Added a graveyard that is specific for the quest “The Nathrezim.”
- Developers’ note: This should eliminate the long run back to the quest if it is in progress and reduce some of the timing bugs that were coming up with Mal’Ganis’ gloating moments.
The Maw
- Fixed an issue where players who accepted a queue in the middle of flying to the Beastwarrens would be pacified until relogging.

- Guardian of the First Ones
- [With regional restarts] The Physical damage portion of Obliterate is now correctly increased by Obliterate’s vulnerability effect, and Obliterate’s vulnerability effect has been increased to 5000% on Heroic and Mythic difficulties.
- Developers’ note: On Heroic and Mythic difficulties, the Guardian’s Sunder and Obliterate combo is meant to be shared between two tanks. Prior to this change, stringing together multiple immunity effects could allow a single tank to survive the entire encounter; this should no longer be possible. Our goal is to avoid a scenario where the optimal strategy for the encounter involves having only a single tank, unlike all other encounters in Sanctum of Domination.

- Mailroom Mayhem
- Unstable Goods that are on the ground are no longer automatically picked up when players approach, and instead must be clicked on to pick them up. Unstable Goods that are thrown can still be caught by other players if they’re not already carrying Unstable Goods.
- Developers’ note: Since Tazavesh opened last week, many players have struggled to consistently pick up Unstable Goods. This issue has proven particularly elusive to track down, but we believe we’ve isolated the cause and are trying out a fairly substantial change to address it.

- Added a new reward to Archivist Roh-Suir’s vendor list that will reduce players’ Stygia loss in The Maw by 75%.
- Developers’ notes: As the denizens of Azeroth have progressed through The Maw, they’ve gained powers to thwart most of the Jailer’s punishing effects, with the notable exception of losing Stygia upon death. We’re making it so that players can now reduce the potential Stygia loss with a new item called Treatise: Bonds of Stygia in Mortals, which will be available at Tier 4 with The Archivists’ Codex.

Dungeons and Raids
- Sanctum of Domination
- Eye of the Jailer
- On Mythic difficulty, using immunities such as Divine Shield could put players in a bad state where they had cleared their Scorn or Ire debuff but may not be able to control what debuff would be reapplied once the immunity wore off. Now using immunities will temporarily immune the damage but will not clear Scorn or Ire debuffs.
- Soulrender Dormazain
- Unleashed Tyranny damage reduced by 17% on Mythic difficulty.
- Echoing Screams now ticks every 2 seconds (was 5 seconds) on all difficulties, with damage proportionally reduced on Normal, Heroic, and Raid Finder difficulties to keep total damage over time unchanged.
- Echoing Screams damage reduced by an additional 10% on Mythic difficulty.
- Developers’ notes: The bursts of damage from Unleashed Tyranny on Mythic difficulty could combine with Echoing Screams ticks to cause unreasonable damage spikes relative to the healing burden of the fight otherwise. These changes are aimed to smooth out those spikes.

- The total damage players must deliver to Sylvanas Windrunner has been reduced by approximately 5% in Normal and Heroic difficulties.
- Sylvanas Windrunner now transitions out of Stage 1 at 84% on Normal and Heroic difficulties.
- Developers’ notes: We felt that players were losing too much uptime due to mechanics, and getting out of the first phase much later than originally anticipated, so this is meant to curtail the length of the encounter without affecting difficulty too much.
- Veil of Darkness radius has been reduced in the third stage of the encounter.
- Banshee Wail and Banshee Scream radius reduced.
- Developers’ notes: Our goal here was to help ease the space constraints imposed by larger raid sizes, without substantially reducing the difficulty of the encounter.

Kozma Kryuchkov – the brave Cossack of the Russian Empire
When I hear his name, an old postcard rises before my eyes. It has a popular print – a young Cossack with a dandy mustache and in a famously crooked cap, stringing freaks in a gray-green military uniform onto a peak. Next to it is some verse with “yatami” and, most importantly, the name of the hero – Kozma Kryuchkov.
When I hear his name, an old, rather faded postcard rises before my eyes, accidentally found in a pile of letters in my grandmother’s closet. There is a popular print on it – a young Cossack with a dandy twisted mustache, in a famously bent cap, which, it seems, is about to fall from his head, is stringing a dozen freaks in a gray-green military uniform onto a lance. Next to it is some verse with “yatami” and, most importantly, the name of the hero – Kozma Kryuchkov.
Well, a real person cannot bear such a name! Obviously, this is some kind of fabulous epic warrior-hero. A brave soldier, great-great-great-grandson of Alyosha Popovich and grandfather of Ivan Brovkin …
That postcard has long been gone, but for some reason the name and the picture are remembered. But it was only many years later that I found out that it was a real person, whom almost every citizen of the Russian Empire knew at the beginning of the last century. A real hero who received the first combat award of the First World War. An undeservedly forgotten hero of an undeservedly forgotten war.
Kozma Firsovich Kryuchkov was born in 1890 on the farm Nizhne-Kalmykovsky in the Ust-Khoperskaya stanitsa of the Ust-Medveditsky district of the Don Cossack.
“I studied literacy at home. He is not strong, but very flexible, evasive and persistent. He was always first in all dexterity games. Kryuchkov’s father is not rich, he is engaged in agriculture. After marriage, Kryuchkov and his wife were the main support of the whole family. Among the farmers, the Kryuchkovs enjoy a well-deserved reputation for homely and religious owners, “- this is how the illustrated magazine Iskra Voskresenye, dated August 24, 1914, wrote about our hero:
In 1911, Kozma was called up for military service in the 3rd Don Cossack Regiment of Ataman Ermak Timofeev. By the beginning of the First World War, he had the rank of clerk, which corresponded to the rank of corporal in the army, and was considered one of the most experienced fighters in the regiment.
The regiment in which Kozma Kryuchkov served was stationed in Poland, in the town of Kalwaria. On August 12, local residents informed the Cossacks that a German cavalry detachment had appeared in the vicinity. It was decided to send a patrol to find the enemy. Having received an order from their superiors, Kryuchkov and three of his comrades went on reconnaissance.
This is how Kozma himself describes what happened next:
“At ten o’clock in the morning we set off from the town of Kalvariya to the Aleksandrovo estate. There were four of us – me and my comrades: Ivan Shchegolkov, Vasily Astakhov and Mikhail Ivankov. We began to climb the hill and stumbled upon a German patrol of 27 people, including an officer and a non-commissioned officer. ”
At first the Germans retreated, but then, seeing that there were only four Cossacks, rushed to the attack. Now the Cossacks had to retreat. Kryuchkov and his comrades galloped towards their positions, firing back at the advancing enemy. And quite fortunately – several Germans were killed or wounded. However, the enemy still caught up with the Cossacks.Cutting has begun …
“Eleven people surrounded me,” Kozma said later. – I don’t want to be alive, I decided to sell my life dearly. My horse is agile, obedient. I was about to use the rifle, but in a hurry the cartridge jumped in, and at that time the German hacked me on the fingers, and I dropped the rifle. He grabbed the checker and began to work. Received several minor wounds. I feel the blood is flowing, but I realize that the wounds are unimportant. I answer for each wound with a fatal blow, from which the German falls in a layer forever. After laying several people down, I felt that it was difficult to work with the saber, and therefore I grabbed their own pike and laid the rest with it one by one.
During this time, my comrades dealt with others. Twenty-four corpses were lying on the ground, and several unwounded horses were scurrying about in fright. My comrades received minor wounds, I also received sixteen wounds, but all empty, so – injections in the back, in the neck, in the hands. My horse also received eleven wounds, but I then drove back six miles on it. “
The wounded Cossacks returned to their own. Kryuchkov was in hospital in Belaya Oolite, where he was visited by the commander of the Russian army, General Pavel Rennenkampf, who himself in the past was a dashing cavalryman. The general rewarded Kozma for valor and courage by removing the St. George ribbon from his uniform and pinning it to the hero’s chest.
This is how Kozma Kryuchkov became the first Russian soldier to receive a combat award in the outbreak of World War – St. George’s Cross, 4th degree, number 5501.And three of his comrades were awarded the St. George medals.
The feat of the Don Cossack was reported to Emperor Nicholas II. Almost all newspapers and magazines in Russia wrote about Kozma. His portraits and popular prints were sold in every shop. The brave Cossack showed off on posters and leaflets, cigarette packs and postcards. They wrote songs and composed poems about him.
But the war had just begun, and after a short vacation to improve his health in his native village, Kozma returned to the active army. The authorities decide to save the hero, and he receives the post of chief of the Cossack convoy at the headquarters of the division.
Kozma’s colleagues said that when the division was withdrawn from the front to rest in some city in the rear, the division chief often informed the city authorities that Kozma Kryuchkov would also come. And then the whole city seemed to go crazy. The garrison with a military band went out for a solemn meeting, the townspeople poured out into the streets in order to certainly see the famous hero with their own eyes.Solemn speeches, receptions, feasts. And necessarily valuable gifts (the most common weapon was a Cossack saber in a gold or silver frame).
Kozma Kryuchkov not only became famous. His name has become a household name. He turned into a semi-mythical person, into a symbol of Russian military prowess and courage, into the heir of epic heroes. An unprecedented wave of patriotism, which swept the entire Russian Empire at the beginning of the World War, raised a simple Cossack from a distant village and threw the crowd at the feet of a jubilant and thirsty for heroic deeds. You need a hero – here he is, get it!
However, let’s be objective.
Firstly, in those years, the First World War was perceived by Russian society as a just war against the Western enemies of Russia, many called it the Second Patriotic War. And any victory, let alone such a bright one, could not be in the people’s minds anything other than another vivid confirmation of the heroism and “chosenness” of the nation, the power of Russian arms.
Secondly, it is truly a feat – to enter a battle of four against 27 and emerge victorious. Moreover, the opponents of the Cossacks were not some recruits or reservists, but career German cavalrymen, perfectly trained servicemen of one of the most powerful armies in Europe, fully mobilized and ready for war.
Thirdly, we must pay tribute to our hero – “star fever”, as they say now, did not affect him. Glory and fame disliked him, he did not like talking about that fight. Kozma did not want to play the role of “mummer at the fair” and at the first opportunity tried to return to the front in his regiment.
Kozma Kryuchkov among the Cavaliers of St. George (center, front row).
In general, Kozma Kryuchkov continued to fight. And successfully – he received two St. George’s crosses and two St. George medals “For Bravery”, having finished the war with the rank of sergeant-major, as a platoon commander.
After the February revolution, Kryuchkov was elected chairman of the regimental committee, and after the collapse of the front in December 1917, together with the regiment, he returned to the Don.
But the Cossacks did not succeed in a peaceful life – the Civil War began. Kryuchkov remained faithful to the oath and sided with the Whites. He fought skillfully, by the end of 1918 he received the rank of cornet and became the commander of a hundred.
At the end of August 1919, Kozma Kryuchkov died near the village of Lopukhovka, Saratov province.
Some say that he was captured by the Reds and was shot.
Others say that Kozma died as well as he lived – a real hero.During the shelling of the village, several bullets hit him. One wound – in the stomach – was fatal. The comrades carried the Cossack out from under the fire and called a doctor. And when they tried to bandage him, Kryuchkov courageously said: “Doctor, do not spoil the bandages, there are so few of them … and I have already fought back.”
Half an hour later, Kozma Kryuchkov died. They buried him in the cemetery of his native farm.
And then … The sad path, familiar to many, from all-Russian glory to almost complete oblivion. And it could not be otherwise – the hero of the Russian Empire was an enemy of the Soviet empire.
But times are changing. We are reconsidering our attitude to the history of Russia and to the people who each created this history in their own way. The First World War is gradually ceasing to be a “forgotten” war, opening its pages to us, naming the names of the soldiers who fought and died for their homeland. Such as the Don Cossack Kozma Kryuchkov. I would like to believe that not only specialists and enthusiasts dealing with military history and the history of the Cossacks will know his name. And that, like a hundred years ago, it will become one of the symbols of the military glory and courage of our people.
Ivan Pereverzev
90,000 Male warrior. Development – Training center Alexey Lukin
Male energy separating and therefore opposition is characteristic of male consciousness. As the famous hero of Dumas said:
“I fight – because I fight”
This is at least an honest statement, there is no attempt at self-justification in it.The time was like this – fight until old age and no one twists a finger at his temple. At a certain age, all the boys fight. Having discovered that the desire for confrontation is a property of masculine nature, tired of stupid and useless fights, from which their face, clothes and the world around them deteriorate, many teenagers find a healthy solution to the problem.
I once discussed this aspect of my childhood with a friend in adulthood. And it turned out: his peers, as well as mine, came up with the idea of adequate sparring. At school we agreed to beat each other only in the corps and not at all for the sake of victory. Sparring for the sake of sparring. A humane version of Fight Club. Reasonable enough. My son at the appropriate age began to come home from school with bruises on his shoulder. His boyish environment further limited the rules – to hit only on the shoulder.
Almost all the men with whom I discussed this issue recalled something similar in their childhood. Of course, ideally, it is appropriate to channel this energy into the mainstream of the mastery of a particular martial art.
What to expect from states in which laws are created by elderly boys who did not have enough reason to fight more constructively?
But now we are not talking about the deputies, but about the fact that every man strives for opposition, a warrior lives in him – this is a property of male nature. Dividing consciousness and provides a masculine movement – you can only rely on what resists. To move somewhere, you need to find an opponent. Castaneda recommended that the warrior “leave his home and go in search of a petty tyrant.”Unreasonable men turn everyone and everyone into opponents, including women, pets, and babies. This is probably very difficult to live with, but this is not the article.
This article is devoted to the classification of male warriors in accordance with the level of consciousness at which they realize their separating potential. Fundamental in this classification is the ability of a man to feel, hear his soul, love himself and accept love. So, let’s begin.
Soulless warrior
If the space in which a man grows turns out to be completely cold, there is little love and warmth in it, the man’s soul can fall asleep very soundly and then the man grows up to be a low or soulless warrior.Demon warrior. Such warriors are sometimes called scumbags. The name is basically correct: the soul froze due to an extreme deficit of high vibrations. The Germans investigated in great detail the reasons for their fascism. Who is interested in reading the work of Alexander Lowen, he is, in my opinion, the best author on this topic. Quote:
“One aspect of this problem needs clarification. A sadist wounds a loved one not out of anger, but out of love. Many of those who survived the horrors of Hitlerism described to Wilhelm Reich the expressions on the faces of their pursuers. This expression can be described as a plea for love and understanding. It seemed that these sadists themselves were tortured people who tried to free themselves from their own torment through violence against others. For those describing these scenes, watching them was worse than the torture that was applied to them. ”
I am not writing about this to justify someone’s actions. I’m just trying to draw your attention to the fact that the problem of an individual and even a nation goes beyond this nation. Mortality from cardiovascular diseases continues to occupy a leading position in the civilized world.
It is quite difficult to heal a demon warrior, it takes a lot of warmth, truly angelic warmth, and such warriors, as you know, do not deserve it. In principle, such a man-warrior is doomed to destruction, since in general the vibrations of the Earth’s biosphere are more mature than such energies. The earth no longer carries them in the literal sense of the word. Watch the movie The Night Porter, virtually the only cinematic exploration of this topic.
Heartless Warrior
The next level of military consciousness: warriors of strength.Warriors who allegedly “did not know love.” Allegedly, because such men got enough human warmth, otherwise they would be scumbags. Their tragedy is different, at some point in their lives they did not dare to fall in love. After all, to love means to become weak, vulnerable, to lose strength. Complete Adolescent Initiation. It is not for nothing that in the culture of such men there is a cult of the mother and female love is rejected in every possible way. To paraphrase a well-known phrase, the motto of such men is:
“Power is not necessary for love”
Socially, such men can be successful because they have enough energy to string the goddess Endu into beads.Such men hear their soul and make a conscious choice not to follow it, sell it for a high place in the beads, thereby shifting towards lower warriors, in fact, becoming scumbags of their own free will. Classic literary example: Othello, who still chose to kill Desdemona, but not to love her. Initiation failed. If such a man dares to fall in love, he goes to the next step.
Naive Warrior
The next level of military consciousness is the warriors of truth.Eternal youths, maximalists of both sexes, who do not know what they are doing. The heart of such men woke up, they experienced adolescent love and stopped at it, because growing up is painful and scary. The basic mythology of mankind is the mythology of naive warriors. The overwhelming number of cheap blockbusters collecting millions of dollars are parables about how a naive warrior defeated all bad ones. I have a favorite saying on the topic of naive warriors:
“Good always triumphs over evil, since the one who won is the one good.”
Any truth that naive warriors fight for is as far from the truth as it is not the truth.
They say that in the last years of his life Lenin asked Krupskaya: “How did it happen, Nadya?”
How else could it have happened? Look at the expression on Krupskaya’s face. She saw Lenin every day:
The role of women in history. A topic that deserves a whole book and more. Judging by Krupskaya’s illness, she knew and understood a lot. And she was silent. Why was she silent? Was she afraid of punishment, or did she not want to upset the possessed leader? Or maybe she just did not live in harmony with her soul? I tried to find photographs of smiling Krupskaya. They are not here. A muse without a smile, what could she inspire? Photos of Krupskaya with a smile appeared only after Lenin’s death.
After the naive warriors destroy all the bad, they begin to see the bad among the good and destroy them, and so on until national suicide.
The bad ones cannot be defeated because they do not exist. The existence of contradictions and disagreements is the basis of the Game of Duality. Dialectics, which Lenin should have known and understood better than others. Why didn’t he understand ?! The traditional disease of naive warriors is an obsession with their own truth.
Once we were arguing about something with a friend and I came up with amazing arguments for his point of view. I suggested that he swap and with great pleasure argued from his position, and he from mine. “Are you really unprincipled?” – in horror exclaimed the wife of a friend, watching this picture. “Absolutely!” – We happily nodded our heads. Sparring for the truth, not happy about winning an argument.
The one striving to be the most right of all is actually just obsessed with the desire for excellence and sooner or later will cause trouble.
It is the concepts of naive warriors that underlie the basic social institutions of modern mankind. The key words of naive warriors are “to win” and “overcome”: enemies, disease, crime, terrorism, crisis. Squirrels in the wheel of history. It is very difficult for them to believe that the enemies are not in the outside world. In their own mind. I met on the train two chiefs of the city OBOPOV, who were traveling from a large meeting. “It’s not difficult to liquidate crime, it’s a matter of several months,” they said, forgetting about the years of Stalin’s repressions, “but what to do with crime among our own people?” Naive warriors – removing criminals from law enforcement is just as impossible as removing Judas from Christianity. The very idea of fighting crime – gives birth to criminals. This game will not end until humanity has enough of it.
Arnold Mindell introduced the concept: “Role is a ghost.” One such role is the ghost of a “bad person.” To one degree or another, we all find ourselves in this role, but we always have some kind of justification. It has long been believed that the entire system of modern justice is in fact legalized revenge. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.”
What I did with the OBOP members all night while we were driving was helping them understand the psychology of criminals. In fact, they were meeting with themselves and accepting the shadow aspects of their own consciousness. Blueberry is the best movie on this subject, check it out if you haven’t seen it yet.
In my picture of the world, war was the only salvation for both the Soviet Union and Germany from total genocide. The external enemy relieves for a while of the pain in your own soul. And of course there would be no war if Stalin really had the wisdom that was attributed to him – there would be no war. He was not a warrior of the word.Cunning and discernment are not the same as wisdom. If you want to understand what to expect from a man – look at his woman. If Krupskaya had an expression of horror on her face, then Alliluyeva allegedly shot herself. In traditional Indian culture, if the leader doesn’t get along with his wives, the tribe gets very nervous. In their view, this is a bad leader.
The initiation of the naive warrior is inevitable. Sooner or later he will be disappointed. And his future fate depends on how this initiation goes.If a naive warrior lives through the pain of his disappointment, his consciousness matures, he becomes a wise warrior. If he avoids pain, his heart closes and he becomes a cynical warrior.
Cynical (fallen) warrior
The cynical warrior is a rather suffering creature. Although he carefully hides it even from himself. Its correct name is the fallen warrior. He lives on the energy of a warrior of strength, where he is not at all comfortable, he has already passed this stage. His soul calls to higher levels, but it hurts to go there.
“Non progredi est regredi” – said the ancients.
Trying to stay on the reached boundaries of consciousness, the cynical warrior inevitably falls.
In some ways, a cynical warrior is a slave to his resentment, although it seems to him that he is the master of his fate. After all, he feels superiority over the warriors of power and over the naive warriors. And he is really energetically older than both, and therefore easily plays with them like pawns.
Social institutions of the modern world were created by naive warriors. They naively think that if “everything bad” is forcibly removed from the world, then it will disappear. No matter how it is. After all, “everything bad” is in the minds of the naive warriors themselves. Fallen warriors are much smarter and dispose of social institutions as they see fit. One misfortune, no matter what high position in the beads of the goddess Endu the fallen warrior occupies, no matter what achievement he has, he always feels that somewhere, by and large, he has lost, only he cannot understand what. In everything.
“There are no villains in leather cabinets, Here the former are similar to the latter. And no less tired than the latter, perhaps … ”Each man corresponds to his woman. Now there is a wave of women’s trainings teaching women to sell their souls dearly to match the fallen warriors. There is always a buyer for any product. Can a fallen warrior rise up without waiting for a heart attack?
If a naive warrior goes through the pain of initiation – the pieces of his broken heart stick together, his ability to love develops. Consciousness matures. Stairway to heaven.
A naive warrior ceases to be naive and becomes a wise warrior.
Wise Warrior
His actions are completely different from those of a warrior. A wise warrior understands that there is no way to hurt or punish someone without hurting his own soul. It is compassion that helps the naive warrior to grow up.
A wise warrior realizes that the conflicts and contradictions of this world are the basis of its development and there is no need to turn opponents into enemies.
The key tool of a wise warrior is the word. The world is as we speak about it. After all, as we say – so we think. How we think – so we live. The warrior of the word transforms this world with his own words. People have been reading and rereading the speeches of outstanding warriors for thousands of years, they help to heal.
In an effort to find peace in his soul, a wise warrior becomes a peacemaker. After all, any resolved external contradiction resolves some internally. I have already recalled one of my teachers, the founder of the Institute for Deep Democracy and international negotiator Max Schupbach.I don’t know why it takes more courage to go out without protection and weapons to meet the lions, as Richardson does. Or stand unarmed between two groups of armed men, ready to shoot each other. In this Universe, a man will always find where to apply his courage. Fighting with your own kind for this is not at all necessary.
Male souls wake up – there are more than peacekeepers. Wise warriors have long developed ideas and principles of other social institutions in which the concepts of enemies, stupid students and disobedient citizens are not used. They were developed a long time ago, but the war is sweet. Sweet with a sense of superiority, which is dearer than peace in the soul. It is the awakening of wisdom in compassion in the minds of individuals that is that evolutionary process, which is much more effective than any wars and revolutions. But even such a legendary peacemaker as Mahatma Gandhi did not dare to dissolve the army in his country, in his opinion, people were not yet ready for this. And in the minds of the legendary peacemaker, the war continued. Together with Gandhi’s army, they would have to cover up the Indian film industry, based on the description of the exploits of naive warriors. The Indians certainly would not forgive him for this. War is sweet.
Costa Rica abandoned the army in 1948 and has not yet been attacked. Perhaps it is too small and not tasty. Cynical warriors of all times and peoples tried to direct the energy of young men in a safe and beneficial direction for themselves.
If a low warrior is capable of surpassing the enemy with the help of strength and skill, but sooner or later he will meet a stronger one and he will have to recognize his weakness.
If the fallen warrior knows how to turn things around with the help of manipulation skills to his advantage, but sooner or later he will understand that he has been deceiving himself all his life. Any naive warrior will sooner or later guess that he himself is the one with whom he has been fighting all his life. The stages of growing up.
Any wise warrior will understand that his wisdom is not unlimited and in some places borders on stupidity. At some point, it becomes unclear whether his interference in the stupid games of adult children is so reasonable that it might be wiser to leave them alone.Let them fight and kill each other, let them howl with their own shadow, let them try to defeat the Spirit of Life, calling it a cure for diseases, let them voluntarily renounce love, trying to humiliate and buy women and their own children. Let them do what they want. In the end, everyone learns from their sins.
A complete turn of the development spiral. Wise Warrior Initiation . The warrior of the word sooner or later realizes that all the contradictions, wars and conflicts of his life and the world around him are a reflection of the processes taking place in his own consciousness.Anything that looks bad or unfair seems so because it touches some kind of wound in his own soul. Healing your own wounds – you can transform the whole world around. Higher military skill. Heal yourself and thousands will be healed around.
Spirit Warrior
Starting to heal not the outside world, but the world within himself, a wise warrior becomes a warrior of the Spirit. The hardest test you can imagine. The hardest thing. This is where you should spend your courage.Passing through these trials, the warrior of the Spirit purifies his consciousness, with every wound healed, with every hole healed in his soul, he becomes a purer and empty flute. And sooner or later the moment will come when all military initiations are completed.
Return of the prodigal son.

Kozma Kryuchkov – the brave Cossack of the Russian Empire
Pages of history
26.09.2013
When I hear his name, an old postcard rises before my eyes.It has a popular print – a young Cossack with a dandy mustache and in a famously crooked cap, stringing freaks in a gray-green military uniform onto a peak. Next to it is some verse with “yatami” and, most importantly, the name of the hero – Kozma Kryuchkov.
When I hear his name, an old, rather faded postcard rises before my eyes, accidentally found in a pile of letters in my grandmother’s closet. There is a popular print on it – a young Cossack with a dandy twisted mustache, in a famously bent cap, which, it seems, is about to fall from his head, is stringing a dozen freaks in a gray-green military uniform onto a lance.Next to it is some verse with “yatami” and, most importantly, the name of the hero – Kozma Kryuchkov.
But it was only many years later that I found out that it was a real person, whom almost every citizen of the Russian Empire knew at the beginning of the last century.A real hero who received the first combat award of the First World War.
After marriage, Kryuchkov and his wife were the main support of the whole family.Among the farmers, the Kryuchkovs enjoy a well-deserved reputation for homely and religious owners, “- this is how the illustrated magazine Iskra Voskresenye, dated August 24, 1914, wrote about our hero:
However, the enemy still caught up with the Cossacks. Cutting has begun …
“Eleven people surrounded me,” Kozma said later.- I don’t want to be alive, I decided to sell my life dearly.
This is how Kozma Kryuchkov became the first Russian soldier to receive a combat award in the outbreak of the World War – the St. George Cross of the 4th degree, number 5501. And three of his comrades were awarded St.
The garrison with a military band went out for a solemn meeting, the townspeople poured out into the streets in order to certainly see the famous hero with their own eyes. Solemn speeches, receptions, feasts.
Glory and fame disliked him, he did not like talking about that fight.Kozma did not want to play the role of “mummer at the fair” and at the first opportunity tried to return to the front in his regiment.
After the February revolution, Kryuchkov was elected chairman of the regimental committee, and after the collapse of the front in December 1917.together with the regiment he returned to the Don.
90,000 To take part in the knightly tournament, warriors from five countries came to Ukraine
To defeat the enemy, conquer the public and, of course, win the favor of a beautiful lady – the participants of the knightly tournament, which took place in Ukraine, had a lot of things to do. Indeed, the most courageous and noble warriors gathered there on spears and swords.
While medieval warriors fight with spears and swords knee-deep in mud, he is here alone like cheese in butter. A Ukrainian Cossack with an edible nickname makes sure that everything rattles properly on the battlefield. There is enough gunpowder in his flasks, he says, for everyone.
“This is a powder flask, real gunpowder, we do it ourselves. The Cossack should also have a cradle, a purse, while empty, without money, and buttons, they are poured out of lead. In battle, they can be used as bullets. They shoot in such a way that it will not seem a little, “says the Cossack.
The Italian knights, by the way eight-time champions of the Old World, having seen the Ukrainian beauties, put their military weapons aside.
The captain of the Apennines team, Mario Copacci, was so carried away by learning toasts and dances that he was almost late for the final battle, but he remembered how his surname sounds in the Ukrainian manner. They are not just fond of history, they live it. Heavy helmets and armor on them like a glove.
In the Cossack village of Mamaeva Sloboda, the whole world history literally gallops before our eyes. There are Italian knights, the Polish gentry, and the Ukrainian Cossacks. The plot is so dashingly twisted that it is simply impossible to determine which era is now.
On horseback no worse than professional stuntmen. The Ukrainian team, by the way, more than once surprised the Queen of Great Britain with their exciting stunts at the famous Windsor show.
In the stands, the spectators reminded the Swedes of the battle at Poltava, but they were not even offended, especially since the Russian soldiers did not come to the knightly tournament this time.
“We have been competing in Kiev for the second year and have not yet experienced a big defeat. We do not intend to give up,” says Alf Kjellstorm, a competitor from Sweden.
At the Kiev lists, the warriors competed in accuracy and speed – to string iron rings at a gallop on a saber, or to spin a conditional enemy 360 degrees with one blow.
The hosts of the tournament had no equal again. The main prize – the saber of the Cossack Mamai for 4 years has never left the territory of Ukraine.
“Here, like nowhere else, the spirit of the Cossacks and chivalry is fully felt. I seemed to be in the 16th-17th centuries”, – shares her impressions Angelica Rostovshchikova.
Guests could also plunge headlong into the Middle Ages. When Tatar warriors take off their caps from their heads with a whip from ten meters, the adrenaline in the blood simply goes off scale. Traditionally, spectators were treated to lard with mead and kulesh on the fire.
At the festive table, warriors from five countries discussed the past fights and congratulated each other.Outside the battlefield, in everyday life, they are friends with homes and even families.
America in the Russian mirror – from Pelevin to Pushkin
Alexander Genis: With an honest regularity of the calendar, every autumn for Russian readers begins with a new book by Viktor Pelevin. This commitment alone deserves our gratitude to the prolific and up-to-date author.
Pelevin has long been the best commentator of post-Soviet reality. For many years, it has brightened up the life of a country with a difficult history and non-trivial economy. But instead of a historical chronicle and topical ditties, he creates its metaphysics, using the same technique: stringing ancient theological constructions onto modern characters. Composing the legends and myths of the new Russia, Pelevin combined the Strugatskys with Lem and multiplied them by Borges. The generator of satirical fantasy, assembled according to this scheme, constantly produced fascinating books.
Following them from the very first – the wonderful collection of stories “Blue Lantern”, I cannot help but notice one strange circumstance. The further, the greater the role America plays in Pelevin’s prose. And not only at the plot level, but even in language. Like raisins in a bun, Pelevin’s pages are stuffed with funny puns, but they often only work in English. So, he comes across the intelligence site malyuta.org or Russian march, which in Pelevin’s translation turned into goy pride. One of his stories was called an untranslatable joke: “Burning Bush.” On the one hand, this is the “burning bush” from the Old Testament, on the other, “Burning Bush”.
In his previous book, The Art of Light Touching, America today became the central theme of the pamphlet story. Vividly reminiscent of The Da Vinci Code, the text tells of an FSB conspiracy that killed an overseas rival. Today, Pelevin assures the reader, “America is a totalitarian scoop of 1970 with LGBT people in the place of the Komsomol, corporate management in the place of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, sexual repression in the place of sexual repression and the dawn of socialism in the place of the dawn of socialism.”
In this acrimonious portrait, it is easy to recognize the America that is presented from the side of her passionate but disappointed admirer.(By the way, this is exactly how I knew Pelevin when I met him in New York. Victor loved and understood American culture and counterculture like no other Russian writer.)
The new two-volume opus “Invincible Sun” continues Pelevin’s tactics: an inventory of spiritual practices, revision of ancient myths and acute topicality. This time, I found the Indiana Jones analogy more appropriate. But I won’t tell you why, because the book has just appeared and I don’t want to spoil the pleasure with a spoiler.Let me draw your attention to just one amazing detail. Starting with the main character, the advanced Moscow blonde Sasha, all the characters speak English.
It turns out that the book is, as it were, translated into Russian, and even then not always, because many witticisms remained without translation. Even with his compatriots, Sasha speaks English. One of the resonators in the novel explains this by “a scar on the collective subconscious”: “Russians abroad strive at the earliest opportunity to join a safe and protected community of people who speak English.”
It seems that this is exactly what is happening with Pelevin himself, who finally turned to America. It is there that he finds what to fight with, whom to complain about and what to ridicule. Pelevin, as I have already said, is the most sensitive author-diagnostician in Russian literature, and if he runs away from it to America, it means that it is here, together with his devoted readers, that he is looking for the main nerve of today’s world.
However, this is not a new, but the next stage in the Russian discovery of America and its development for their own purposes.Having taken root in the Russian national subconscious, America has long taken possession of the collective imagination. Today it needs America, because confrontation with it brings back the lost feeling of sovereign arrogance. As long as the main enemy is America, the rest do not seem to count. This is how Khrushchev, having decided to overtake America, at once eliminated other competitors, who, however, did not notice this.
Today’s episode of the cycle “Lost in Translation” by Vladimir Abarinov will discuss the historical origins of the problem: how America was reflected in the Russian mirror.
Immigrants from Eastern Europe at the federal immigration center on Ellis Island. Date unknown. From the collection of the US National Archives
Vladimir Abarinov: “ America is quietly going on its way, hitherto safe and prosperous, strong in the world, its geographic position strengthened, proud of its institutions. But several deep minds have recently taken up the study of American manners and regulations, and their observations raised again questions that were thought to have long been resolved.Respect for this new people and for its way of life, the fruit of the latest enlightenment, has been greatly shaken. With amazement we saw democracy in its disgusting cynicism, in its cruel prejudices, in its intolerable tyranny. “
This is what Pushkin wrote in 1836, and this characteristic is still a favorite quote of Russian Americanophobes. What did the poet mean and what did the Russian classics generally know and say about America and the Americans, what kind of image of the country did they create? This is the topic of our conversation today in the Lost in Translation cycle. This topic has not been covered with archival dust at all, it is still relevant.
The existence of the New World in Russia was learned in the 16th century, about 40 years after it was discovered, from the work of the learned monk Maxim the Greek. He studied in Europe, was a very educated and knowledgeable person, and in one of his opuses he said that the Spaniards and the Portuguese learned to swim far beyond the Pillars of Hercules, that is, beyond Gibraltar, and discovered many new lands, in particular, “the land of the greatest verb Cuba “.But Maxim the Greek does not yet call the newly discovered continent America.
In August 1732, Russian navigators Ivan Fedorov and Mikhail Gvozdev, with the crew of the Saint Gabriel boat, saw the American coast for the first time with their own eyes and dropped anchor four miles from Alaska. In festive verses for the new year 1733, Vasily Trediakovsky wrote about the beneficial trade relations with America:
Purchase is blessed
Will come enriched,
We will be friends with the nations,
American birth.
Indians were then called Americans. Here Lomonosov, for example, in his famous “Letter on the Use of Glass” mentions an unequal exchange, but sees in this the great wisdom of the Indian people:
They live in America, we have tea, simpletons,
What is there metal from a silver river
They give the European merchants willingly
And they take uncountable number of beads,
But those, I think, are wiser than us,
That they drive away from their troubles the cause of the eyes.
To them these times will not be forgotten forever,
How their fathers fell for gold they were beaten.
Sumarokov severely condemns the colonialists:
Europeans touched land,
Where their insolence led,
Want to cleanse mortal souls,
And hit their bodies.
Ivan Krylov wrote the libretto for the opera “The Americans”. It was set to music by the outstanding Russian composer Evstigney Fomin. The opera features Spaniards spoiled by civilization and noble, simple-minded American savages.
Louis Glazman. Battle of Sitka. 1988
In June 1802, the Tlingit tribes captured the Mikhailovskaya fortress, built by a Russian-American company, on the island of Sitka. Two years later, the main ruler of the RAC, Alexander Baranov, began a siege, and then an assault on the fortress with the participation of natives friendly to Russia and the sloop “Neva” under the command of Yuri Lisyansky. The city of Novoarkhangelsk was subsequently built on the island, which became the capital of Russian America (now the city of Sitka). Before the incident in Syria on February 7, 2018, when US regular troops responded to the actions of PMC Wagner’s mercenaries, the Battle of Sitka remained the only US-Russian clash in history.
Well, and, of course, one cannot but recall Radishchev’s ode “Liberty”, which contains an eulogy to the American Revolution, which was not yet completed by the time these poems were written:
Look at the boundless field,
Where the atrocities have been erased:
Not the cattle were driven here against their will,
Courage gives no lot,
Not the pile tends correctly,
The leader here is a warrior, everyone is watching,
He is looking for a glorious end.
O unshakable warrior,
You are and were invincible,
Freedom is your leader, Washington.
Decembrist Nikita Muraviev wrote his draft constitution on the basis of a careful study of the American constitution. In Russia, everyone, starting with Empress Catherine II, avidly read the novels of Fenimore Cooper, Pushkin was very fond of Washington Irving, but he adhered to the opinion quoted above about the political structure of the United States.
Our frequent guest, literary critic, Pushkinist, Dostoyevskist, nabokologist Alexander Dolinin, is participating in today’s program. Alexander Alekseevich, on what basis did Pushkin write about the “disgusting cynicism” and “intolerable tyranny” of American democracy? He is believed to have read this from Alexis de Tocqueville in American Democracy. He wrote to Chaadaev that he was “hot and scared” by this book. But Tocqueville also has a lot of praise for American democracy, in fact, it is a hymn to the US political system. Why didn’t Pushkin internalize this positive view of American political institutions?
Count Alexis de Tocqueville. Portrait by Theodore Chasseriot. 1850
Alexander Dolinin: I would not say that this is a hymn. I would say that this is an extremely deep, dispassionate description of the new social system, which Tocqueville, an aristocrat himself, considered an inevitable stage in world historical development, assumed that European monarchies would sooner or later go the same way, but believed that this system was unpleasant. has many repulsive features, but it is not devoid of positive features. That is, it is such a special model, a prototype of the European future. And Pushkin apparently read this book like that. And so he was scared of this future, which, according to Tocqueville, awaits all European countries sooner or later. He viewed American democracy in two ways: as a political democracy, which took on special forms in the United States in accordance with local historical and geographical conditions, and social democracy, which, he believed, was compatible with other types of government, even with autocratic ones. That is, public democracy can be under a monarchy, for example.
Pushkin had a two-volume book of Tocqueville in his library, which he bought, we even know when, in French. These books have survived. He did not cut the pages in the first volume that dealt with the state structure of the United States. And he cut only those chapters where it was about democracy as a social institution, about the extension of the principle of equality to all spheres of social life, with the exception of the economy and racial relations, including the sphere of culture. He, of course, read chapters on the democratic tyranny of the majority, which enslaves the human soul, actually limits freedom of opinion and excludes the appearance of literary geniuses and other prominent personalities in culture. This is such a flip side of egalitarianism – as Tocqueville wrote, “the intolerable tyranny of the mob over culture.” This is what frightened Pushkin. And the American political system left him deeply indifferent.
The first edition of Democracy in America, which was read by Pushkin
Vladimir Abarinov: Then it is permissible to ask: was Pushkin in general a democrat or a liberal?
Alexander Dolinin: Pushkin, firstly, often changed his views. We can say that he was a liberal conservative. Or a liberal undemocratic. He didn’t like democracy. Democracy scared him off precisely because it is the rule of the majority over the minority, including over the educated minority, including over the gifted minority. He did not like the July Monarchy in France, he wrote somewhere that the people there ruled “with all the disgusting power of democracy.”
Vladimir Abarinov: And he wrote to one of his women acquaintances (I think, Elizaveta Khitrovo) that now Madame Janlis should marry Lafayette, and Bishop Talleyrand should marry them – this will be a worthy end to the revolution.
Alexander Dolinin: Yes, yes, yes. He was impressed by English democracy for the time being. What he in the poem “To the grandee” called “a dual cathedral” …
Vladimir Abarinov:
Here the onslaught is fiery, and there the rebuff is severe,
Bold springs of new civic consciousness.
Alexander Dolinin: But in 1832, after the parliamentary reform, Pushkin became disillusioned with English democracy. These reforms seemed to him too radical.
Vladimir Abarinov: It is interesting that the Russian Slavophiles who wrote about the decline of the West did not include America in this West. For example, Ivan Kireevsky saw in her a source of fresh strength that would renew civilization.
Alexander Dolinin: Here, as it were, two models of perception of America are competing. They compete in the minds of not only conservative thinkers, but also liberal ones. At first, what struck me as surprising was the reaction to the same book by Tocqueville on the part of Russian democrats-Westernizers, liberals.Herzen objected to Tocqueville, in one of his letters he wrote: “Where is the beginning of future development in America? The country is cold, calculating, and the future of Russia is immense. I believe in its progressiveness.” This is Herzen, then a young, radical democrat. And Belinsky also speaks of Tocqueville’s book.
For them then – perhaps thanks to Tocqueville – America becomes the embodiment of the most unpleasant materialistic aspirations, which alienate even the democratically liberal-minded young thinkers of Russia of that time from it.Here, you see, two models work in an interesting way. One model is, if you will, twin, where the similarities between the United States of America and Russia are emphasized. Young countries that entered the arena of world history late, at about the same time, and are developing in parallel. This is one model.
Another model is antagonistic. Russia and America – yes, two young powers that are developing very quickly, the population is growing rapidly, the economy is growing rapidly, but, nevertheless, they are antipodes. That same Tocqueville, the famous Pushkin certainly knew this place, because it was published, albeit in French and with cuts, in his magazine Sovremennik in the first issue. Pushkin’s friend Alexander Ivanovich Turgenev published his letter there from Paris, in which he said: “I spent the evening reading Toqueville’s“ On Democracy in America. ”Talleyrand calls his book the smartest and most remarkable book of our time, and he knows both America and the aristocrat himself , as well as Tocqueville You will agree with the conclusion of the author… “He further quotes the last paragraph of the second volume of Tocqueville …
Vladimir Abarinov:
At present, there are two great nations in the world who, despite all their differences, seem to be moving towards a common goal. These are Russians and Anglo-Americans.
Both of these peoples appeared on the scene unexpectedly. For a long time, no one noticed them, and then they immediately came out on top among the peoples, and the world almost simultaneously learned about their existence and about their strength…
In America, activity is based on freedom, in Russia – slavery.
They have different origins and different paths, but it is very possible that Providence secretly prepared each of them to become the mistress of half the world.
Alexander Dolinin: He, of course, stops the quote, otherwise the censorship would not have let it through.
Vladimir Abarinov: In post-reform Russia there is a new interest in America, no longer in political institutions, but in its entrepreneurial spirit.Nekrasov, who was a businessman of a new type, the “bourgeoisie”, as they said at the time, sees nothing wrong with honest entrepreneurship, but precisely honest, because business swindling flourished in post-reform Russia:
Rus raves about America,
To her hearty gravitation …
Shuisko-Ivanovsky goose –
American? .. Of course!
Whatever happens – they drag,
“Our ideal, they say, is
Transatlantic brother:
His God is also a dollar !.. “
True! But the difference is:
His God is a dollar earned by labor,
And not a stolen dollar!
America appears to be a country of immense opportunities, Russian subjects are fleeing there, and Dostoevsky writes indignantly about this in his Diary of a Writer: “… … weren’t there just some seminarians. ” And he calls this flight “treason to the fatherland.”In general, if you read Dostoevsky, America is some kind of total hell, not New, but the other world. Mitya Karamazov, whose brother is going to arrange a jailbreak to America, dreams of how he and Grushenka will live there with the “last Mohicans”, and then return to Russia as such Americans, and then he says: “I hate this America now! And even if they were all immense machinists there, or what – to hell with them, they are not my people, not my soul! ” How did America displease Dostoevsky?
Alexander Dolinin: Well, you see, this is such a mythologization of reality. We have two models. Both mythological. Both, of course, are stereotypes. One is America, the promised land, a different world, where a person acquires a new identity for himself and realizes dreams of freedom, starts a new life from scratch. This is such a blissful death and rebirth. For example, if we remember Korolenko’s story “Without a Language”, there the peasant Matvey ends up in New York, and then he has a dream in which he hears prophetic words: the old Matvey died, the old faith died, and the heart becomes different, another soul becomes , something like that.
And the second is, accordingly, a negative reflection of the first. It’s like Svidrigailov, who, before putting a bullet in his forehead, announces that he is going to America. That is, he goes to hell, to his bath with spiders, that eternity that he drew for himself. So for Dostoevsky, of course, this is hell, and he exaggerates the negative traits of American life in order to portray America as a cursed place. Not a promised land, but a cursed land, if you will. And those who remain in America are, of course, infidels, enemies of the human race.
Dmitry Svetozarov’s series “Crime and Punishment” (2007). Suicide of Svidrigailov. Svidrigailov – Alexander Baluev.
Vladimir Abarinov: Leo Tolstoy perceived America quite differently. In one of our previous programs, we talked about the great impression made on him by the American transcendentalists – Emerson, Thoreau. In the novel “Resurrection” Nekhlyudov carries a petition to the highest name for pardoning Katyusha, and he is already mentally preparing to accompany her to Siberia and recalls the words of Henry Thoreau that the only worthy place for a just person in an unjust state is prison. This is from Thoreau’s essay On Civil Disobedience. Alexander Alekseevich, what can we say about Tolstoy’s attitude towards America and Americans in general?
Alexander Dolinin: A lot of Americans came to Tolstoy. There were followers of his teachings in America. They came to him as a spiritual teacher, it was extremely pleasant and flattering for him, and he talked with them with pleasure. An interesting memory came across to me. This is Tolstoy’s conversation with James Creelman.
Vladimir Abarinov: This is a very famous journalist, at the time the editor of the New York Herald. He was in Yasnaya Polyana in March 1891.
In December 1908, Leo Tolstoy recorded a short text in four languages, including English, on a phonograph roller for the Edison company. On the label of the British record company The Gramophone Co. Ltd. it is erroneously indicated that this is an excerpt from Tolstoy’s book “For Every Day”. There are no such words in this book. But the first phrase of this short monologue is literally in Tolstoy’s diary: “The fact that the goal of life is self-improvement, the perfection of the immortal soul is the only goal of human life, is already true because any other goal, in view of death, is meaningless.” Further, Tolstoy says: “Consequently, the question is whether what you did in life, what you had to do, is a matter of great importance, which is only one thing that matters in the short time allotted to us, that business, for which He or It sent us into this world. Are you living right? “
Alexander Dolinin: This seems to be one of the few interviews with him where he talks about America in general.
Twice they met, and both times Tolstoy spoke about America. First, he said, “America needs great faith. Truth will make your people free. When Americans stop seeing pleasure as the goal of life, they will not need so much money. Then he told this American that” it is wrong to be proud of your country. But being ashamed of your country is good. In my opinion, – said Tolstoy, – Americans are constantly proud of their country. “The American says:” Why not be proud of them? After all, this is a country based on the principle of equality. ”-“ No, ”said Tolstoy,“ this is a country absorbed in the pursuit of money. ”That is, Tolstoy, like his antagonist Dostoevsky, sees in America the embodiment of the materialist idea.
And then, the second time, he told him – almost like a prophet of America’s doom – that “America has lost its youth. Her hair turns gray, her teeth fall out, senile senility sets in … Your Emersons, Garrisons and Whiters are a thing of the past. Your country breeds only moneybags. In the years before the Civil War, the spiritual life of your people flourished and bore fruit. Now you are miserable materialists. “That is, from the point of view of Tolstoy, America underwent a process of degradation in the 19th century. This he said somewhere at the very turn of the century.
Vladimir Abarinov: This dualism in the perception of America has survived to this day.Sometimes he takes caricature forms from one side or the other. It is difficult to resist not to quote the already textbook poems of Andrei Voznesensky, written in 1977:
Two countries, two heavy palms,
destined for love,
head-gripping in horror
God damn what the Earth has done!

90,000 Knights seized the Shchelokovsky farm: the Volga Standard Festival opened in Nizhny Novgorod
September 14, 2019, 22:35
For the thirteenth time, the famous historical festival “Privolzhsky Standard” is being held on the territory of the Shchelokovsky farm. This year it turned out to be especially large-scale, and in addition to knightly battles, Nizhny Novgorod residents saw a reconstruction of the battle from the times of the Nizhny Novgorod militia.

Once again, reenactors representing different eras and peoples, from the Vikings of the Dark Ages to the Musketeers of the 17th century, set up their tent camps on the territory of the farm.Hundreds of Nizhny Novgorod residents gathered to watch the battle of the soldiers, who were not frightened even by the rainy weather. And they did not come in vain, the 2019 festival has become one of the most diverse in recent years.
The program was opened by a general parade, which brought together historical clubs from Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Dzerzhinsk and many other cities of Russia. In front of the spectators on foot marched men at arms, pikemen, archers, infantrymen of the early Middle Ages, Varangians and many others.Equestrian knights, accompanied by vigilantes and ladies of the heart, caused a special stir.
The honor of “shedding first blood” fell to reenactors in knightly armor. They participated in the so-called “black buhurt”, that is, wall-to-wall battles, in which any techniques of fencing and wrestling are allowed. True, in their hands they did not have swords and axes with maces, but sticks of different lengths.
This measure was introduced several years ago after the participants in the buhurts began to frequently receive injuries after fighting with metal weapons. But, despite the use of pieces of wood, the battles have not become less spectacular and are still a real test of courage, strength and endurance.
The main tactic of the men at arms this year was to encircle the weakest members of the opposing team and quickly incapacitate them. Therefore, one could often observe that two or three knights at once lean on one opponent and literally press him into the ground with their weight.
No less spectacular was the White Buhurt, a battle between two teams using metal swords, axes and spears.Unlike men at arms, they did not have serious protection except for leather armor and chain mail and therefore were more accurate, striking not with full force.
According to the rules, any direct hit to a part of the body, be it an arm or a leg, means the defeat of the competitor. The organizers explained this by the fact that in a real battle, a soldier who had lost an arm or received a strong blow to the body was no longer able to continue to fight.
For fans of the graceful play of blades, the reenactors organized a fencing tournament with weapons of the late Middle Ages: swords and foils.According to the rules, the fight lasts until the first effective blow, that is, hitting the body, hits on a tangent are not counted, since swords, unlike heavy swords, left only cuts on the bodies of the duelists.
Not only the Middle Ages were presented at the “Privolzhsky Standard”, the audience could watch how they fought in the 17th century. The rivals were Russian spearmen with archers and German musketeers together with Swedish pikemen.
To win, the shooters had to load their old muskets as quickly as possible and smoothly fire a volley. Naturally, they fired blanks, otherwise the competition would have ended too quickly.
After the musketeers and archers fired a volley, pikemen stepped forward, trying to hit each other with long spears. This battle tactic was adopted by the Europeans of the 17th century from the ancient Greeks, who fought in special formations called “phalanges” and used spears that reached a length of three or more meters. At the same time, the pikemen were helped by musketeers and archers, who threw down their firearms and switched to close combat, armed with swords and sabers.
At the same time, horse knights met at the main lists of the festival. In the beginning, they demonstrated their prowess in various exercises. The first was the throwing of darts or sulits, as they were called in Russia. Each participant had to accurately throw 5 throwing javelins at the target at full gallop.
Further, the horsemen found out which of them was more dexterous, stringing wreaths on the spear, which their beautiful companions held in their hands. At the end of the demonstration performances, they knocked down cabbage heads set on poles with swords, which symbolized the enemy’s heads.
After the knight put on armor and proceeded to what all the spectators had been waiting for for so long – a real knightly duel. According to the rules, victory points were given to hits in the body and head of the opponent. In this case, the most points were given if the horseman inflicted such a strong blow that his spear broke. By the way, it was precisely from such medieval fights that the popular expression “to break the spear” went.
At the end of the spectacular part of the festival, the Nizhny Novgorodians were shown for the first time a reconstruction of one of the many battles that took place on the outskirts of Moscow in 1612, when a militia was assembled in Nizhny Novgorod by Kozma Minin and Prince Pozharsky, which drove away the Polish invaders.
According to legend, the mercenaries of the gentry – Spanish and Swedish pikemen, together with the German musketeers – took up a position on the path of the militia. The archers had to recapture it, putting the invaders to flight.
Well-trained mercenaries came out against the Russian soldiers, among whom there were even knights in plate armor, but nevertheless the militias were able to inflict such heavy damage on them that the invaders entered into negotiations and agreed to retreat for a small reward of 300 gold.
However, the mercenaries were insidious and occupied the only bridge in the district through which the Russian army could cross. Moreover, they brought a cannon with them, which for a long time prevented the militia from approaching enemy positions and seizing the bridge. However, the archers proved to be less cunning than their opponents, and outflanked the enemy, striking the musketeers and mixing their ranks. At the same time, Russian spearmen went into battle, completely defeating the enemy and capturing the commander of the mercenaries.
But the program of the festival was not limited to demonstration performances, the guests could feel themselves medieval warriors, taking part in master classes in archery and combat with cold weapons. The little knights were given special training “soft” swords or tambaras, with which they happily beat each other.
Lovers of more peaceful entertainment were able to participate in an impromptu medieval ball. Masters of ancient dances demonstrated to the citizens of Nizhny Novgorod how they moved in old “discos”.
For those who wanted to get acquainted with the medieval history, a fair was opened where one could buy replicas of weapons, elements of armor, plates and mugs made using ancient technologies, medieval clothes and much more.
In addition, one could feel like a real blacksmith, helping the reenactors in the armory under the sky.

90,000 Maria Semenova “Swan Road” – Dorija’s review
Oh, what a language Maria Semyonova has! The words are strung like pearls on a thin strong forest, and a long thread of mother-of-pearl beads comes out, twisting into a necklace.
But how has only one single person spoiled me, and also the author of a wonderful fantasy, the great and terrible George Martin. While reading, every now and then I caught myself waiting for the death of this or that hero, no, I do not wish him death, but simply sure that no matter how sorry I was, he could not survive, and was very surprised every time when the hero didn’t die after all. “As in a fairy tale” – revolves somewhere in the backyard of consciousness. And when for me the death of book characters became the norm of life, the only reality that is beyond doubt? .. Mr. Martin poisoned my blood with his gloomy severity, I almost stopped believing in the victory of justice and the triumph of good. But how beautiful is the world created by Maria Semyonova. A created, not invented, ancient world, far from us, described as she dreamed of.
Vikings – scorching by a piercing north wind, washed by the icy northern sea, beautiful as ice-covered fjords, persistent as rocks turned gray from salt, my love!
Three brothers Viglafsson, sons of the famous Raven, brave warriors themselves, by chance are forced to leave their native shores and, together with their families and faithful retinue, look for a new home in foreign lands.Their path lies to the east, across the great Lake Ladoga, past the lands of Prince Rurik, to the glorious city of Kremenets. Where dense forests full of animals, fast rivers rich in fish. Winter is generous on the snow. And the honey smells of the meadows, and the dawn mists silvery with dew, and the wind infused with wild grasses.
Prince Churila Mstislavich is sitting there. Even the Hovding, cut off in battles, is not ashamed to serve under the command of such a king.
Kremenites received vagabonds as good guests, gave them a land plot. The Vikings rebuilt, settled down, made friends with the locals, some even began to take Kremenets beauties as wives. But the Vikings are bored to feel the solid ground under their feet, the Vikings yearn for the hoarse voices of seagulls and the swaying deck, and their drakkars, carefully sheltered from rain and sun, day after day dream of the sea surf.
Ah, what a serial could have come out of this, how many bright characters and interesting destinies! But they will spoil the same …
PS. But what I don’t understand is why and how some of M. Semyonova’s novels, including Swan Road, ended up under the tag “fantasy” ?!
Thanks to Carmelita for the recommendation.
