In late March, UPS opened its refurbished European hub at Cologne/Bonn Airport in Germany following its expansion. This project, one of the largest investments in UPS history, cost $200 million and took two years to complete.
UPS (United Parcel Service) is the world’s largest express delivery company with a turnover of more than $54.1 billion in 2013. The company is headquartered in Atlanta, USA. UPS operates in more than 220 countries and territories around the world. UPS’s main European aviation hub is located at Cologne/Bonn Airport. Together with the UPS Worldport hub in Louisville (USA) and the Asian ports in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Shanghai, Cologne/Bonn plays a central role as an international logistics hub for both large international companies and small and medium-sized companies in Europe, which use the capabilities of the UPS global logistics network.
“The Cologne/Bonn hub remains our flagship hub in Europe and continues to serve customer needs,” says UPS Europe President Cindy Miller. “Our strategic investment in Germany, one of the world’s largest exporters, underscores our commitment to growing the European economy. This is part of a long-term strategy to enable our clients to successfully compete and conduct their business both on important trade routes within Europe and on routes linking Europe with North America and Asia, in an era when planned free trade agreements promise growth and development of large and small companies.”
As part of the reconstruction, the existing center was equipped with the latest technology, and the sorting area for larger cargo was also significantly expanded. The UPS Air Hub in Cologne has a unique feature: the sorting system is divided between two buildings, which are connected by two bridges 126 and 152 meters long, respectively. Each bridge has eight conveyors to move goods between the two buildings. The operating area currently occupies over 105 thousand m2. The UPS sorting center is the largest employer at Cologne/Bonn Airport, now with over 2,500 employees; as a result of the reconstruction, 200 new jobs were created.
At the same time, there are completely deserted floors in the three-level building of the sorting center, where all sorting takes place automatically. Loads move along conveyor belts, with each box lying on a separate concave platform. Scanners read barcodes, at the right moment the platform tilts and the box slides onto another conveyor. Smaller items are sorted in the same way – parcels and parcels.
The addition of eight new automatic sorting lines increases the capacity of the air hub sorting center by 70%, to 190 thousand shipments per hour or about 53 shipments per second. The length of the conveyor system is currently about 40 km, while the time it takes for a shipment to move from the unloading point to the loading point takes an average of 15 minutes.
Every day on weekdays, Cologne/Bonn Airport receives and then sends almost 40 cargo flights, that is, a total of about 80 takeoff and landing operations are performed. The main work is done at night. It is very important that Cologne/Bonn is one of the few airports in Germany that has retained the ability to operate around the clock. Most airports have banned night flights due to noise restrictions. UPS Europe has 17 owned and 20 leased aircraft. And around the world, UPS Airlines has a fleet of 234 own and 293 chartered aircraft. It is curious to note that UPS has not only its own cargo air fleet, but also containers of its own design.
In the European market, UPS has been able to significantly increase export volumes over the past decade. With the expansion of the air hub at Cologne/Bonn Airport, UPS will be able to provide trade routes to and from Europe for the whole world and gain opportunities to further develop the international express delivery business. One of the promising areas for the further development of UPS is participation in global logistics supply chains, including production ones. At UPS, global distribution and logistics includes managing the movement of not only goods, but also the information and money that moves with those goods. The formation of such schemes allows, for example, to organize assembly production without own warehouses, since all the necessary components are delivered to the conveyor at the right time. This allows you to save on inventory, but, of course, requires a well-established supply chain. At UPS, such schemes are called the synchronization of world business processes.
