Texas’ Most Beloved Summer Camps — Storied Overnight Camps are a Tradition Like No Other for Generations of Texans

Nothing conjures up feelings of sweet nostalgia like summertime in Texas. Blazing sun. Perfectly tanned skin (after an inaugural base-burn). Melting ice cream. Fresh, juicy peaches.

I, like many Texans, spent my childhood (and young adulthood) enjoying days of summer sunshine and freedom at camp. My camp wasn’t just a “summer camp” though. It was more than that — it was a home-away-from-home, and the friends I made there are truly my second family.

Many of these Texas summer retreats lie tucked away in the heart of the beautiful hill country near Kerrville, Texas. For reference, that’s about an hour and a half west of San Antonio. Picture giant canopies of rich green trees that blanket unending rolling hills. It’s like stepping foot into pure paradise: sounds of chirping birds, buzzing cicadas and gentle streams rescue you from the hustle and bustle of noisy city life — until the yells and laughter of joyful children breaks the profound tranquility.

Going to camp seems to be in the blood of many Texans. But not all Texas summer camps are created equal. These are Texas’ most beloved summer camps, many with histories that stretch back generations.

Take note: The camps are listed in alphabetical order.

Heart O’ the Hills

For many camp goers, Heart O’ the Hills is most easily identified by its red-roofed hotel-style cabins. Some might find it a bit different that the girls who attend this camp live in an old inn, but why waste good construction and real estate?

The inn was built in 1928 for campers’ parents dropping their children off at neighboring camps.

The inn was in operation until 1953 when it became a camp in honor of the soon-to-be-owners’ daughter, Jo Jones, who died in a car accident in nearby Ingram. Since then, Heart O’ the Hills has grown, and through the years has constructed more traditional-style cabins (what they call “tepees”).

Another interesting characteristic of Heart O’ the Hills is its location just along Highway 39, and by that I mean the highway actually splits the camp. So as you (carefully) wind the narrow roads, take it as no surprise when you might see some campers horseback riding on your right and others splashing in the Guadalupe River on your left.

Besides the daily activities, the camp also holds special days and events throughout the term. Take, for instance, Seminar Day. This special and highly-anticipated tradition provides a change of pace from the day-to-day camp life.

Campers can learn the ideas and customs of their counselors’ home countries in seminars like Fiesta, Netball, Advanced Canoeing, Zip-lining and even Harry Potter World! I’m not sure exactly what that entails, but I have a feeling it’s a dream come true for many.

La Junta

Like many of the camps that dot the roads through central Texas, Camp La Junta is one that has been around for decades — since 1928 to be exact. Because of its great tenure, the camp has developed strong traditions and deep history that have stood the test of time.

La Junta is an all-boys camp whose name means “the gathering place”, and the name suits the camp perfectly. Generations of boys have gathered every summer to challenge themselves in sports and activities and learn important life skills, all while building an appreciation for the outdoors and (arguably most importantly) enjoying the simple joys of summer.

The boys at La Junta can take a wide range of activities that are unlike anything they’d be able to experience during summer at home. Imagine taking mountain biking as a class, or trap and skeet shooting, or horseback riding. Yes, please!

But La Junta takes Riding to another level. Back in 1955 they began a tradition called “The Rough Riders”, which since then has given the camp’s top eight riders an opportunity to embark on a two-day camping and ranching excursion. The boys ride over miles of ranch country, sleep and cook outside, run fence lines and work livestock or game.

Longhorn

Camp Longhorn has been a summer staple for thousands of young Texans since its founding in 1939 at Inks Lake. The small and humble beginnings of Longhorn are almost unrecognizable now that it boasts three locations. In addition to its home base at Inks Lake, the camp now offers its summer sessions at Indian Springs (established 1975) and C3 (established 2016, located on Inks Lake).

Of the many fun games and activities Longhorn offers, its blob on the lake is an undeniable trademark. To make things clear, Camp Longhorn is actually credited with inventing the exhilarating activity. If you’ve never had the opportunity to experience the excitement (and brief, adrenaline-rushing fear) of a blob, just imagine a giant trampoline.

As one camper (or several) jump on one end of the massive water installation, the camper on the edge of it gets thrown high up in the air before splashing into the water below.

You can thank Camp Longhorn for creating the blob.

Unlike many other camps, Longhorn’s focus is more on participation and leadership than on competition. So it should come as no surprise that there is a “Longhorn Rangers” leadership and adventure program for 10th grade boy campers.

Those boys who participate in the program get to travel via bus to Colorado and New Mexico with a myriad of activities to check off along the way, like camping, fishing, and rock climbing. After completing the two weeks of bus travel and activities, they return to camp to put their leadership skills into practice as counselors and teachers.

Camp Mystic

Drive down Highway 39 in the evening hours, and you’ll find this camp marked by its glowing “Mystic” sign atop a hill they call Sky High. Because Camp Mystic was founded 1926, many campers can say that their mothers, aunts, cousins, grandmothers and sometimes even great-grandmothers attended the camp as children.

The Guadalupe River splits the more than 700-acre campgrounds, and provides a refreshing reprieve from the hot and steamy days that only get worse as the summer wears on. Mystic offers a number of sports and activities for campers to participate in daily, many of which revolve around the river.

Girls are also members of one of two teams that compete in sports and games throughout each term. One of the teams is declared the crowning champion at the end of each term.

And what of the food you ask? Those who attend Mystic unabashedly boast about its delicious and flavorful dishes. And to make things even better, Mystic serves Blue Bell ice cream every day after lunch. Every. Day.

But the heart of the camp lies in its Christian identity. Sundays are reserved for praise and worship on the waterfront, and vespers on Chapel Hill. And with just more than 400 campers per term, Mystic remains a fairly small camp, making it a special place to create those lifelong friendships that we all dream of.

Stewart

Camp Stewart began back in 1924, and is the brother camp to Heart O’ the Hills just down the road. The two camps, which are not too far from each other, even have a brother/sister picnic for siblings who attend each camp.

Stewart rests on more than 500 acres of land, providing ample room for all sorts of activities and programs. In addition to the everyday activities, the camp offers Condor Specialty Programs to boys once they turn 13. There are four programs within the program itself: Ranchman, Sportsman, Outdoorsman and Campmaster.

Each of the programs allows the teens to take specific classes in each field to learn more about what interests them most.

But all things activity aside (though the activities Billy Bob Sled and Tarzan Rope sound like the absolute most fun), Camp Stewart also has several special events and traditions that I wish could be celebrated every day outside the confines of camp. Like Rodeo. Or Crazy Hat Breakfast. Or Mardi Gras Lunch. Can I RSVP yes?

Vista Camps

Of all the camps on this list, the Vista Camps hold the honor of being the oldest ones, having hosted Texas kids since 1921. The Vista Camps are actually comprised of two camps: Rio Vista (for boys) and Sierra Vista (for girls). Though each camp is located on the same grounds, they are distinct and are considered to be more brother-sister camps than anything else.

The activities at Vista are similar to any other camp, but the Vista Camps offer other unique ones as well. Campers can opt to take “Just for Fun,” which is essentially a 50-minute class of fun and free time. Or campers can keep their brain cells fresh and conduct all sorts of science experiments in an activity called Mega Mind.

Though Vista’s boys and girls camps have their own separate schedules and activities throughout the day, they do gather together about once a week for any number of nightly programs. Together they have a dance, as well as a picnic, and even a carnival.

Because of the age of the Vista Camps, the traditions run deep. Often times, generations of families have attended, and can share in the memories and traditions together.

Camp Waldemar

Waldemar, also situated between the rolling hills of central Texas and along the Guadalupe River, has been the summer retreat for summer-loving, camp-devoted girls and their ancestors since 1926. Its deep history and legacy run just as deep as the roots of the camp’s cypress trees.

Since its beginnings, Camp Waldemar has made it its mission to provide wholesome fun and an escape from the business of the outside world, and to instill in the girls the values of faith, friendship, character and self-esteem.

Of the many things Waldemar is known for, its dedication to excellence in etiquette and manners (particularly at meals) is certainly near the top. The girls are taught all the important to-do’s and not-to-do’s of eating at the table, including using “please” and “thank you” when asking for food, waiting to begin eating until the hostess begins her meal, maintaining good posture and trying one of everything set before them at the table.

Trying a little bit of everything may seem daunting to some, but when all the food preparation is overseen by a gourmet chef, it isn’t too difficult. Waldemar even has its own cookbook you can purchase on its website that includes recipes and dishes from past eras.

Our camper application requires a $400 deposit that is fully refundable up until the month of March of the year the camper is scheduled to attend camp. For campers that are on the waiting list, the deposit is fully refundable at any time.

Potential Conflicts with Public School Dates

Dear Mystic Parents, Grandparents, and Alumnae,

We need your help with school calendars. We are trying to prevent camp days being cut from our camp calendar. The law has been (and still is) that public schools cannot start earlier than the 4th Monday in August. However, a new law passed at the end of the last legislative session, which gave public schools a loophole if they wanted to change their own School Start Date and End Date to any date they wanted. This loophole is a part of Districts of Innovation (or DOIs). We are not against District of Innovations; schools should be innovative, but we are concerned with just 2 of the 67 exemptions from law that they can ignore, the school start and end dates. As a result, many school districts that are now Districts of Innovation are changing their calendars. Over the past year, we and other camps have been actively lobbying at the Capitol in Austin to try and restore the traditional calendar back to starting the 4th Monday in August for all public schools.

Please help us by contacting both your local School Board and your State Legislators, and tell them you want school to end before Memorial Day and start after the 4th Monday in August. Explain to them how beneficial longer summers are for you and your family, and describe how educational summer camp is for your daughters and granddaughters.

The more local School Boards, State House of Representatives, and State Senators hear from you and other constituents, the more likely they are to restore calendars of schools starting the 4th Monday in August.

If you need to determine your state legislators, look online for the website Who Represents Me. Put in your address and your state representative and state senator should appear in the list of all who represent you.

Memorable Moments From the First Summer at Camp Mystic Cypress Lake, 2020

 
For decades, God has put on our hearts the dream of creating a second camp and allowing more young women the opportunity to enjoy the fun of summer camp and experience the Mystic Ideals. And with His love, we will be opening our sister camp in 2020.
 
Our new camp is being built on the hill that overlooks the Cypress Lake, past Natural Fountains. It will be independent from the older camp, with a separate entrance, waterfront, dining hall, office, infirmary, playing fields, archery range, stables, chapel, and cabins.
 
Dick and Tweety Eastland will be executive directors of the original camp and new Camp Mystic Cypress Lake, with their sons and families working at both. The new lake camp will carry on the traditions, tribes, and values of our existing camp.
 
For 2020, we will have two sessions. The first session will be for two weeks beginning in early June and have a similar program to our existing short term. The second session will last four weeks and open in mid-June and have a similar program to the existing long terms. We are now accepting applications for new campers and for those on the waiting list who may be interested in attending Camp Mystic Cypress Lake.
 
We will be posting pictures of the construction on our website and sharing more information.
 
For 93 years, Camp Mystic has been in pursuit of instilling confidence, friendships, skills and spiritual growth of thousands of girls. We are grateful for your love, support, and prayers. May God continue to bless us all.

I loved RRR from the second I saw it. The smell of the cedar trees sure was heaven compared to the pollution of Dallas. I only got to stay for two weeks that first summer, which was way too short a time. I rode the horses, shot up targets, and made stuff in the crafts hut. I know I made it down to the river a few times. It was the year that I got my red tie in the horseback department and I was sooooo proud! I got to stand in front of the campfire while the campers all went berserk over my accomplishment. I feel so lucky to have the memories that I do and those are of RRR. I don’t remember much about my childhood, but I remember everything about RRR and how much I loved going there every summer. It was heaven on earth.

They seem so simple there in the moment … the singing of camp songs, Friendship Circle at the end of an evening program, the Cowpoke/Wrangler drawing, saddling a horse for the first time, scooting down the rapids … but each song, with each tug on the halter rope, with each stroke of the canoe oar, with each ring of “Goodnight, campers!” a new brush of color is being painted on her childhood experience. Location & Directions – Trinity, Texas

Camp Olympia is located on beautiful Lake Livingston in the piney woods of East Texas of Trinity, Texas. Trinity is about 100 miles north of Houston, 200 miles south of Dallas-Ft. Worth area, and 200 miles east of Austin.  Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is only 90 miles from camp, which makes the trip to Camp Olympia convenient for campers that are from other areas of Texas, out-of-state and out-of-country!

Houston – Approximately 1.5+ hours away:
From I-45 North take exit 113, which is Hwy 19. Stay on Hwy 19 approximately 20 miles to Trinity, turning right at the second traffic light onto Hwy 94. Go approximately 3 miles and turn right on FM 3188. Follow the road about 5 miles to the gates of camp.

Kingwood – Approximately 1+ hours away:
From Hwy 59 North exit FM 1314 in Porter and go left. Turn left onto FM 242 and go approximately 5 miles to I-45. Go North on I-45 to exit 113, which is Hwy 19. Stay on Hwy 19 about 20 miles to Trinity, turning right at the second traffic light onto Hwy 94. Go approximately 3 miles and turn right on FM 3188. Dallas – Approximately 3 hours away:
From I-45 South exit Hwy 7 at Centerville. Go east to Crockett. In Crockett go right on Loop 304 for approximately 1 mile. Turn right on Hwy 19 and travel south to Trinity. In Trinity turn left at the first traffic light onto Hwy 94. Go approximately 3 miles and turn right on FM 3188. Follow the road about 5 miles to the gates of camp.

Beaumont – Approximately 2+ hours away:
From Beaumont take Hwy 69 North to Woodville. Take Hwy 287 northwest to Groveton. In Groveton, turn left on Hwy 94 and travel 15 miles southwest. Turn left on FM 3188. Follow the road about 5 miles to the gates of camp.

Austin – Approximately 3+ hours away:
Take Hwy 290 east. Exit Hwy 21 towards Caldwell. Travel east on Hwy 21 over 100 miles to IH 45.Go right on IH 45 to Huntsville. Take exit #118 and turn left under IH 45, then right onto Hwy 75. Buildings, as a rule, are guarded around the clock, and their strict schedule requires students under 16 to return no later than 21 hours, those who have not yet turned 18 – no later than 22 hours.

A seven-year-old girl from Guatemala died in hospital the American city of El Paso shortly after being arrested by the US border patrol.According to the American media, death came from exhaustion and shock. According to the Washington Post with reference to the US Customs and Border Protection, the girl and her father were detained on December 6 in New Mexico as part of a group of 163 migrants.

Eight hours later, the child started having seizures and fever. According to the records of the border service, the girl did not receive food or water for several days.

The girl was then taken by helicopter to the children’s hospital in El Paso, where she died of cardiac arrest.

The US Department of Homeland Security confirmed to CNN that doctors were unable to save the child. The authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of the tragedy.

Most of the children go to a refugee youth camp in Tornillo, West Texas.It now contains about 2,800 children and adolescents who are housed in tents in a desert area near the Rio Grande River.

The camp is designed for 3 thousand children, and its leadership is already complaining that it does not have time to cope with the increasing influx of migrants.

A child may be released from a refugee camp under the care of sponsors, usually a family member or close friend who is already a US citizen.

How does Dubravushka differ from others? First of all, the atmosphere.It’s so good here that the guys want to come back again and again. The first words of my daughter when I picked her up last year: “Mom, next year I will go here for 4 shifts in a row!” And that says a lot! Recreation and health improvement of children – a set of activities that ensure the development of the creative potential of children, the protection and strengthening of their health, the prevention of diseases in children, their physical education, sports and tourism, the formation of healthy lifestyle skills in children, by them of the diet and life in a favorable environment while fulfilling the sanitary and hygienic and sanitary and epidemiological requirements (Art.1 of the Federal Law of July 24, 1998 No. 124-FZ “On the Basic Guarantees of the Rights of the Child in the Russian Federation”).

Since January 1, 2010, the issues of organizing and ensuring recreation and health improvement of children are attributed to the powers of state authorities of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. In the Samara region, this issue is within the competence of of the Ministry of Social, Demographic and Family Policy of the Samara Region and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Samara Region.

Annually, at the expense of the regional budget, more than 40,000 children rest in children’s health camps in the Samara region.

Every child living in the Samara region, including those in a difficult life situation, annually has the right to receive vouchers to children’s out-of-town health camps and sanatorium health camps of year-round action.

During the year (except for the summer period), all children of the Samara region, including children in difficult life situations, orphans and children left without parental care, have the right to receive vouchers to sanatorium health camps all year round free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis in complex social service centers at the place of residence.

In the summer of 2021, vouchers to health camps for children of the Samara region, including children in difficult life situations, orphans and children left without parental care, will be provided as follows:

Vadim Perelman’s film “Farsi Lessons” has finally reached our cinemas, which became a hit last year: its world premiere took place at the Berlinale, the Russian premiere at the Moscow International Film Festival, and the Chinese one in Beijing, after which the film was shown there on thousands of screens. The originality of her script and genre solution was appreciated by Andrey Plakhov .

The script for “Farsi Lessons” was written by Ilya Tsofin, our compatriot living in Germany, based on a plot that has a real basis, which became an apocryphal and used in the story by Wolfgang Kohlhaase.Belgian Jew Gilles, trapped in a Nazi concentration camp, pretends to be a Persian; German officer Klaus Koch saves him life, demanding in return to give Farsi lessons, which he does only by inventing a non-existent language. The film was directed by the Hollywood director (and also our former compatriot) Vadim Perelman with the help of the Moscow producer Ilya Stewart and the Belarusfilm studio. The credits also include the name of Timur Bekmambetov as a co-producer. The picture was shot by cameraman Vladislav Opelyants, the music was written by composers Eugene and Sasha Galperins living in France.

But in the film, where there are so many eminent Russian participants, there is no Russian language, there is French and German. Fortunately, not English, which is used to “comb” European co-productions, including those based on the Second World War, which completely deprives them of their authenticity. The protagonists, each in their own language, are played by the German Lars Eidinger and the Franco-Argentine actor Nahuel Perez Biscayart. Linguistic truth is especially important in the plot, the key character of which is the language: pseudo-Persian, invented especially for this film and having another important task.It is based on the names of the prisoners of the camp, many of whom will not live to see the end of the war and should be recorded in history.

Eidinger and Biskayart, performers from different schools and generations, form an expressive duet, and their characters enter into an intellectual duel for life and death. Moreover, one of the duelists is unarmed and risks everything, the other feels that he is being fooled, and is ready to use the victim, but the latent respect for a skillful opponent makes this game a cat and mouse. As a result, it turns into a perverse friendship between a potential executioner and a potential victim.

Lars Eidinger, star of the Schaubühne Theater, is finally performing in a film role worthy of his talent. The head of the camp kitchen Koch, in his performance, is a grotesque image and a farce image, sharpening the theme of “ordinary fascism” and “the banality of evil” to the utmost. Not devoid of artistry, the layman dreams of somehow quickly surviving the war and doing the culinary business – to open a restaurant in Tehran (this is what Persian lessons are for). He is not some infernal sadist or zoological anti-Semite, he just does the job, and, of course, it is not his fault that the place of this work turned out to be a concentration camp, but the material – human lives.However, sharpening the type of his hero – there is a lot of German explosive mixture of cruelty and sentimentality, romanticism and psychopathy – Eidinger does not turn him into a caricatured villain; he deliberately reduces the bold colors of the actor that are appropriate for the theater, but excessive for the cinema. The seriousness with which he pronounces words in pseudo-farsi prompts one to recall the best comedian actors in world cinema.

Authenticity as a principle is continued in the way the visual environment of the film is solved: the foggy rare forests of Central Europe and the dull barracks of a carefully designed concentration camp that was smashed here.Of course, this is no reconstruction at all, and thank God, but this is not a symbolic hell either. The film avoids expressionism, even in a variation on Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. At the same time, there is no doubt that Vadim Perelman carefully studied the experience of his predecessors, who radically transformed the theme of concentration camps and the Holocaust over the past quarter century. A turning point on this path was the painting by Roberto Benigni “Life is Beautiful”, where this theme gave a strong tilt towards not only fairy tales or melodrama, but also comedy.At first glance, this genre mix seems blasphemous, but in fact it reflects the dead end in which attempts to develop large tragic forms in the twentieth century entered. After Auschwitz, it turned out to be impossible, at least in its former form, not only poetry, but also tragedy. The era of mass slaughter and factories of death could not give rise to either Sophocles or Shakespeare. The tragedy has mutated into a tragicomedy, in this case – into a tragicomedy of positions. After all, this is really funny and creepy: how in the very heart of Europe, in the midst of a war, a Jew forces a German to cram an invented language, moreover, made up of the names of thousands of prisoners.

Perhaps Perelman would have succeeded even more in this risky genre experiment and made the film aesthetically more sophisticated – such opportunities were in the script. However, the director preferred the democratic option – to give the viewer the opportunity, empathizing with the story, to learn simple but valuable lessons. A spark of humanity can be carved even in the darkness of fanaticism and terror. Fate helps the brave, and laughter rather than fear helps to overcome horror.
