How did Joe Steffy overcome the challenges of Down syndrome and autism to become a successful business owner. What role did his parents play in his journey to entrepreneurship. How has Joe’s story inspired others with disabilities to pursue their dreams.
Joe Steffy’s Early Life and Diagnosis
Joe Steffy’s story is a testament to the power of determination and support in overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges. Born with Down syndrome and later diagnosed with autism, Joe faced significant obstacles from the very beginning. Early assessments painted a bleak picture of his potential:
- Teachers reported an IQ of 32 with profound intellectual disabilities
- Receptive and expressive language skills at a 3-year-old level
- Minimal basic academic skills
Despite these initial evaluations, Joe’s parents recognized qualities in their son that others had overlooked. They observed his desire for independence, his love of social interaction, and his remarkable memory for detail. These observations would prove crucial in shaping Joe’s future trajectory.
Defying Expectations: Joe’s Community Involvement
Joe’s parents actively sought opportunities for him to engage with his community and develop his skills. Their efforts led to several positive outcomes:
- Joe became a strong swimmer and helped at the community pool
- He developed a passion for horseback riding and volunteered at a local stable
- These experiences demonstrated Joe’s ability to follow routines and work with others
How did these community experiences impact Joe’s development? They provided valuable opportunities for skill-building, social interaction, and the development of a strong work ethic – all of which would prove invaluable in his future endeavors.
Navigating the Transition to Adulthood
As Joe approached the end of his high school years, the transition planning process revealed a stark contrast between the expectations of his school team and the vision his parents held for his future:
- School team’s assessment:
- Joe would never hold a job
- He had no attention span and could not focus
- He would need to live in a group home
- Parents’ perspective:
- Joe was capable of working
- He learned effectively by watching and imitating
- With proper guidance, he could develop valuable skills
Why was this divergence in expectations so significant? It highlights the critical role that parents and advocates play in challenging limited perceptions and fighting for opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
The Birth of Poppin Joe’s Kettle Korn
The idea for Joe’s business was born during a family trip when his father observed a kettle corn vendor. Intrigued by the process, he began to consider how this might be a suitable enterprise for Joe. This moment of inspiration led to a series of events that would transform Joe’s life:
- Joe’s parents researched the kettle corn business extensively
- They developed a business plan tailored to Joe’s strengths
- Equipment was purchased and Joe began learning the kettle corn-making process
- Poppin Joe’s Kettle Korn was officially launched

DSWORKS Initiative Success Stories | National Down Syndrome Society
Joe Steffy
My Name is Joe Steffy, I am 30 years old and I own Poppin Joe’s Kettle Korn. As October is Down syndrome Awareness Month, I wanted to share my story to inspire others to pursue their dreams. My story is a tribute to my parents’ determination and the support they have given to ensure my quality of life. I have been able to share my success story across the country at conferences, seminars, and to parent and self-advocacy groups. In honor of Down syndrome Awareness Month and National Disability Employment Month, I’d like to share it with you!
I was born with Down syndrome and later diagnosed with Autism. When I was in school, my teachers said I had an IQ of 32 with profound intellectual disabilities. The reports said that my receptive and expressive language was at a 3-year-old level, and that I had minimal basic academic skills.
As I grew, my parents saw that I liked to do things independently, I loved being active with other people and spending time with family and friends. They recognized that I had a very good memory for detail, and could follow through with activities that are part of a regular routine. I was blessed with many community opportunities and became a very strong swimmer. This led to the opportunity of helping at the community pool. I also enjoyed horseback riding at a local stable and began to volunteer there to help with the horses.
In high school, my team started to plan for my transition into adulthood. The team had very low expectations. They said I would never hold a job, that I had no attention span, could not focus, and would need to live in a group home. My parents disagreed. They knew I was capable of working and that I learned by watching. They also knew I would do exactly what I saw done, so teaching me the right way to do things would be important. I am happiest when I am busy and my parents knew this. I would work, they said.
While on a trip, my Dad saw a man popping kettle corn and it caught his attention. He asked many questions about the process to the man, and learned that kettle corn is an old German way of popping popcorn with sugar. The popcorn pops between 420°- 460° degrees. When you add the sugar and secret ingredients to the popcorn and vegetable oil in the hot kettle, the sugar breaks down into a liquid. As the popcorn pops it comes up through the sugar and gives the kernels a sugar coating. While popping, the kettle is 500° degrees so it is important that it is constantly stirred. As you stir the popped kernels, it commingles. Once it is all popped, it is dumped out onto the screening table where it cools.
My Dad came away excited about the possibilities to use this to build on my strengths. This was a way for me to prove that I could work. We did a work trial in October of 2000. The goal was to see if I could work. We popped on weekends at local grocery stores and I showed Dad I could stay on task for up to 6 hours. In the work trial, Dad saw that I could learn the repetition of the production process. I could pop, and I could bag, both key parts of popping kettle corn.
My parents decided this looked like very promising work for me. They attended a Davis Hammis presentation at a Partners in Policymaking class in Kansas. It showed that I could OWN my own business. The key to making Poppin’ Joe’s Kettle Korn come true was having a business plan, doing the work trial, and proving that I could work.
First Steps helped my Mom set up the business plan, and the Kansas Department for Developmental Disabilities provided me with a new business startup grant to purchase new equipment. My start up team included Social Security, which offers a program called PASS (The plan for achieving self-support) and having cash set aside for achieving my business goals. My parents also worked with Vocational Rehab to purchase a computer and laser printer for my business. They submitted my business plan to open Poppin’ Joes Kettle Korn to each of these team members. My team was then able to provide me the startup supports I needed to become the sole proprietor of Poppin Joe’s Kettle Korn in April of 2005.
I offer five products in my business. Cinnamon Kettle Korn, Sweet and Cheesy, Old Fashioned Kettle Korn, White Cheddar popcorn, and Golden Karmel Korn. 65% of my business is through selling at Festivals like the county fairs, car shows and various festivals around Kansas City. 25% of my business is through weekly supplies to specialty stores like gas stations, medical centers and farmer’s markets. The final 10 % is popcorn I sell for special events like weddings, graduations, employee events and internet sales.
My daily business tasks include deliveries, banking, paying my bills, and sending out invoices, as well as popping kettle korn to keep up with the demand. My gross sales starting out were $15,000 in 2005. They doubled in 2006, and have now have tripled to over $60,000 annually in sales last year! We are a success because of teamwork and the commitment my parents have made to me.
Poppin’ Joe’s Kettle Korn began with the mission of honoring God in all we do. Being a blessing to other people, to pursue excellence, and to grow profitability. I am a member in the community that I work in, which gives me a place to belong. I am a contributing citizen and am able to do fundraisers for local churches, schools, businesses and communities events, as well as for many nonprofit organizations. My community values me – I pay taxes!
In 2008, Poppin Joes helped me move into my own home. I love my freedom! It gives me a great life! I go to work during the day, and hang out and do fun activities at night, just like most business owners. I have many activities I enjoy, like shooting hoops, horseback riding, swimming, traveling, skiing, going to amusement parks, water surfing, sky diving, lifting weights, scuba diving, spending time with my family and friends. My business has also enabled me to have many adventures, going places and meeting people I would not otherwise get to meet. I have been invited to travel and share my story with groups across the country. This has brought me many new friends, and expanded my business even further.
I have been blessed by incredible parents who have advocated for me since my birth. They saw my potential. They knew that I could succeed. They have given their time and energy to help make my business a reality and a continued success. This Down syndrome Awareness Month and Disability Employment Month I want to say Thank You to my advocates since birth, Mom and Dad, Janet and Ray Steffy. I love being Poppin’ Joe!

National Interest Waivers (NIW) Success Story
My success story of getting my green card with the help of the Arkell Immigration Team.
I am thrilled to report that with the help of Tom Arkell and the Arkell Immigration Team, my I-140 petition was approved and I received my green card. I wanted to share my success story to encourage others to seek their green cards and pursue their dreams in America. I am an Italian native with an M.B.A. from the Bologna Business School, a Bachelor’s in Electronic Engineering, and a Masters in Biomedical Electronics Engineering from The University of Bologna. Most of my work is in the biomedical field, and I have helped develop many life saving devices and systems throughout my career. At the time of my application, my work and research had 20 citations and resulted in my presenting at two national and international conferences. In addition to my development of technology, I had done research and taught at both Johns Hopkins University and The University of Bologna. I am thrilled to be granted a green card so I can continue to research and develop lifesaving technologies and keep changing the landscape of biomedical engineering in America. I have Tom and his team to thank for that.
While searching for an immigration attorney to help me on my journey of immigration to the United States, I found the Dunn Law Firm and Tom Arkell. Tom was incredibly accommodating and even helped me complete the I-140 process while I was in my home country of Italy through the use of Consular Processing. Tom and his team are incredibly well versed in the intricacies of immigration law and proved to be extremely professional and accommodating during the petition process. I had a team member assigned to work with my case specifically, so I always had someone to reach out to regarding a question or a concern without having to deal with the hassle of communicating with someone unfamiliar with my case every time I had an inquiry. Tom was very reasonable with his pricing, and I had peace of mind and confidence that he truly believed in his ability to get my petition approved. Tom made sure that every aspect of his process was on time and very time efficient in order to get my petition in front of the right people in the most timely manner possible and his diligence put me at ease as I knew that he would never put my case off or leave me wondering what was happening in my application process. He and his staff collaborated with me and helped me through the process of writing excellent letters of support. Tom’s team made the entire process easy to understand. I would highly recommend Tom and the Arkell Immigration Team to anyone looking for assistance in the immigration process, their professionalism and knowledge base was astounding, their prices were reasonable, and they ultimately helped me acquire my green card.
Thank you to Tom and his team!
Luca Neri
My success story of getting my green card with the help of the Arkell Immigration Team.
I want to thank the Arkell Immigration Team from the bottom of my heart for helping me change my life. Tom and his team filed an EB-1A extraordinary ability petition on my behalf which was approved in two days. I would like to tell my story to help others understand how Tom helped me enter a new chapter in my life as a permanent resident of the United States. I am originally from India and I am an experienced researcher and author in the fields of bioinorganic chemistry and cancer therapeutics research. I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chemistry at Madurai Kamaraj University, then earned my Ph. D in Bioinorganic Chemistry from Bharathidasan University. After earning my Ph.D., I advanced my research in Japan and France before joining the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (“UIUC”) as a Postdoctoral Researcher, where I am currently a Research Scientist. At the time of my petition, I had authored or co-authored 15 peer-reviewed articles and 4 conference proceedings in the field of chemistry and had been invited to present my work at universities, international, and national conferences 3 times. My work had been cited 507 times, and I served as a reviewer for the International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research and Modern Education, Chirality, Journal of Biological Sciences and Advanced Techniques in Biology & Medicine (ATBM). Additionally, I served on the Board for the International Journal of Recent Research and Applied Studies.
I met Tom while working at UIUC and from the moment I sent him my CV he was wonderfully responsive and personable. I was also blown away at how reasonable his fees were when compared to other nationally known immigration attorneys. Every aspect of the process was made easy to understand and streamlined for me. It is due to the exceptional personalized service I received that I have recommended many friends and colleagues of mine to Tom and the Arkell Immigration Team. I know that Tom and his team will treat everyone I send his way like his top priority and give every ounce of effort they have to make sure to try and get their petitions approved. I am so grateful to Tom and his colleagues for everything they have done for me and my friends. I would encourage anyone who needs immigration work done to send Tom their CV for an honest and candid evaluation. I will continue sending people his way so the Arkell Immigration Team can help them, like they helped me.
Sincerely,
Ramakrishnan Sethu
My success story of getting my green card with the help of immigration attorney Thomas J. Arkell.
It is my great pleasure to let you know that we (I and my wife) received our green cards. I take this opportunity to share my success story of getting our green cards with you. I believe that this would help someone who is struggling (as I did two years ago) to find out a better approach (if not, the best approach) to get the green card. I’m SR, a native of one of the South Asian countries (not an Indian). I finished my Ph.D. in Agriculture and I moved to Madison to work as a Post-doctoral fellow at University of Wisconsin-Madison, WI. I wanted to apply for my green card soon after I moved to Madison as I realized that it would be much harder to get a job without my green card. But I was the least informed or least prepared to apply for the green card compared to my colleagues who were trying to apply for the green card as always I was focusing on my academic and research work. As I was struggling with not having enough time to prepare for our green cards, I decided to get a help of a lawyer group to apply for my green card. I searched different websites but could not finalize anything. When I talked to one of my friends who was already a green card holder, he told me that Tom Arkell helped him get his green card within 2 months under the EB-2 category. He strongly suggested that I send him my CV.
When I sent my CV, Tom responded quickly and said that he would like to help us get our green cards. Tom was very reasonable with his service fee. It was a flat rate for both applications, I-140 and I-485 and there were no other hidden fees included. I have already talked with other lawyers regarding the attorney’s fees and most of them were very expensive. Tom accepted credit cards and asked me to pay his service fee in four terms which was a big relief for me as I did not have money to pay if he asked me to pay using my debit card or using a check. Always we had a clear understanding of how much to pay and when to pay. Another important thing was that when he was sending our applications to USCIS, he wrote checks for me as filing fee ($580 for I-140 and $2140 for two I-485s). So I was able to pay the whole amount using my credit card. What I’m saying here is that when you get help from Tom, you can start applying for your green card without having money in your bank account. I applied for two credit cards with 0% APR for two years. That gave me a comfort zone to pay back the whole amount without spending a penny as an interest. It is noteworthy that Tom did not charge a fee for using credit cards to pay his attorney’s fee. The other best thing is that they have a money back guarantee in case you do not get your green card. My interpretation for that is, if Tom accepts a case, that is a guarantee that you are getting your green card (if you follow his guidance properly).
When I signed the contract with Tom, the whole process was smooth. His staff was friendly and always tried to help with the situation. He assigned one staff member to work on my case and that was convenient as I did not have to explain the situation to different people to get the job done. All the instructions were clear to get all the documents prepared. They created an account for me and I could see the all required documents in one place. I uploaded them as they were ready. They provided templates for the recommendation letters. The recommenders were happy to see the templates for the letters as they did not want to spend too much time on creating letters from the scratch. They also helped me with writing and correcting the recommendation letters. They were an efficient group and did everything in time. Once we sent the documents to USCIS, it was a matter of time to receive your green card as Tom does an excellent job compiling all required documents and present your case to USCIS where they have a minimum chance of rejecting your application.
In short, the green card application process with Tom saves a lot of your time, you do not need to know a lot about the application process as they cover that for you, reduce the unnecessary burden on getting your green card, saves money, multiple options for paying his service fee and filing fee, no hidden fees or fees for using credit cards to pay his attorney’s fee, clear instructions, well-developed user friendly website for uploading documents, and cutting the postal charges for sending documents, finally you get what you want, your green card. Good luck with your green card application and please do not hesitate to work with Tom.
Thank you, Tom and your staff!
Sincerely,
SR and family.

Case Study 1 – Keeping The Edge Sharp
The need: Pfizer, one of the world’s leading providers of life-saving drugs, wanted to maintain top performance in one of its largest manufacturing plants – located in Dalian, China – after its current Managing Director retired. The pressures to keep the edge sharp and the plant at peak productivity were enormous.
The Solution: After careful planning with the client, Team Results designed a customized 2½-day program based on identifying, reality-testing, reformulating and retesting the top-level leadership strategies that would lead this critical plant into the future. Characterized by fun, laughter, the right cultural fit and a basis in the four Team Results principles – Originality, Credibility, Results, Measurement – the leadership team emerged with practical, proven refinements to the world-class dynamics which they had already had in place under the previous leadership.
The Results: After the program and the post-retirement change in Managing Director, the Pfizer Dalian plant went on to new strengths, handling the leadership transition smoothly and maintaining – in fact, slightly increasing – all productivity measures. Though the credit for productivity improvement should always go to the client, top Pfizer management identified the Team Results program as critical in sustaining and improving performance over the transition and into the future.
Productivity measurement results can be seen in the “Measurement” section.
We’ve used Team Results in China before. They were so successful that we brought them back for this critical mission. A successful handover of power to the new leadership team was essential, and there is nobody we would have trusted for that but Team Results. They ran a two-day session that was fun, relevant, practical, business-based and very right for our team and organizational culture. It was a pleasure working with them again!

Case Study 2 -Fixing a Crisis
(Note: Since this case study describes a major challenge at a client, the client’s identity has been protected.)
The need: When 1500 staff walked out at a large manufacturing client, costing the controlling company a total of $2.5M a day in lost production, the company came to Team Results for solutions. Based on a long-standing relationship with the controlling company and on high-speed consultations with top managers, and in the absence of any identifiable cause, Team Results concluded that the likely cause was a subtle but rapidly destabilizing feature in team dynamics which needed practical investigation and correction.
The Solution: Team Results invited a specially-selected group of key opinion leaders to attend a 2½-day customized productivity-improvement program which was focused on finding, diagnosing and correcting the destabilizing features in the team dynamics. About two-thirds of the way through the program, and through using proprietary, fun but well-provenanced techniques for investigating these dynamics, the “survival terrain” of work teams at the plant had been well-mapped and the cause – a complicated cultural instability triggered by a simple event – was identified and tackled. Back-channel strategies designed to defuse such instabilities in the future were created during the program, and then implemented at work.
The Results. Workers at the plant returned to the job, and more significantly, there has not been any similar incident in about six years since. Confidence across the workforce remains high that the former instabilities have been successfully tackled with practical strategies developed on the program and then sustainably continued in the workplace.
An academic paper was written on this work by Team Results and delivered at Johns Hopkins University, leading to a collaborative project in cutting-edge team dynamics research with UCLA. This paper, and further information on current Team Results’ thought- and practice- leading research activities, can be found in the News Room section.
Team Results helped us turn a near-disaster into a triumph. We needed not just talk, not just analysis, but action and results. The program unified the supervisors, created a new level of productivity and got to the bottom of the problem that caused the walkout. There’s no-one I know of that can compete with Team Results in that area.

Case Study 3 – Hitting a Performance Target
The Need: When giant telecommunications provider Telstra sold its Yellow Pages business, it was essential that the Yellow Pages I.T. Department – the most critical team to the sale – do its best work ever in the three months leading to the transition. The catch: there were no jobs waiting for them at the end. The challenge: the business data must be in top saleable condition, and I.T. had no reason to care.
The Solution: Team Results met with senior Telstra leadership to identify the areas of performance that were most critical. Then turning its attention to the Yellow Pages I.T. Department, Team Results designed a customized 2½-day program tailored to identifying, developing practical strategies for, and implementing the answer to a simple question – if there is no job waiting at the end, what unifies a work team to turn in the best performance of their lives?
Working with Team Results, I.T. department staff identified a key area of choice and control – they could take charge of ensuring their own high-value marketability across the I.T. community, the business community and the business media after a very successful sale and handover of the Yellow Pages business. The team then focused on using the program to develop tested and proven strategies for the short-term unification of a group of professionals to achieve world-acclaimed performance.
The Results: Strategies developed by the I.T Department during the program were instantly transferable and highly successful at work, leading to the successful and uncontentious sale of the Telstra Yellow Pages business at the full asking price. Wide acclaim of this success in the business community and the financial press led to all members of the former Yellow Pages I.T. team finding excellent jobs within three months, in many cases at higher seniority and salaries. By comparison, other outplacement efforts for equally-qualified staff in other parts of the business which did not engage Team Results look longer, cost the business more and were much less successful.
It was a real puzzle. How do you create great levels of team effort when you’re also telling everybody that their current roles and jobs are disappearing? With typical ingenuity, Team Results ran a practical program that was perfect for our needs, got everyone enthused, involved and laughing, and delivered very concrete business results when it came to the business changes and positive outcomes for the people. We were able to celebrate our successes and give everyone a positive mindset for the future.

Case Study 4 – Getting on the Same Page
(Note: Since this case study describes a major challenge at a client, the client’s identity has been protected.)
The Need: A globally-known car maker needed its dealerships to freeze sales during a long weekend so that the system could be overhauled to meet new tax regulations. The dealerships met the request with a hostile and angry refusal. The company was facing an impasse on a national scale, complications on every side, and a non-negotiable deadline for tax compliance.
The Solution: Recognizing that only the senior management saw an urgent need for resolution of the impasse, Team Results asked the company to send key managers and opinion leaders from the three most-affected departments – dealerships, finance and I.T. – to a 2½-day customized program at a neutral location. Focusing on the need to emerge with practical team strategies for an apparently impossible project, the group managed a simulated project together which accurately reproduced the challenges of getting a unified result across major cultural differences and legitimately different business priorities. The goal was to develop a set of practical, tested and shared strategies to get a complicated job done on time – even when compromise and sacrifice were required by all.
The Results: Using negotiation strategies developed on the program, the managers and key opinion leaders returned to work and won support in their work areas for the impasse-solving strategies also developed on the program. The tax switchover happened on time and without excessive compliance costs, and the dealerships implemented agreed stop-gap measures which allowed trading to continue. Though all sides retained their legitimately different business pressures, their now-unified strategies and practical discoveries about trust and teamwork enabled this massive tax change to be completed on time and with no loss of goodwill.
We just had to get past the conflicts. There were legitimately different pressures and viewpoints in the company, and we were in danger of gridlock. We’ve relied on Team Results before in all kinds of situations, and once again they proved their worth by running exactly the right retreat for the situation. I don’t think the deadline could have been hit in any other way – or by any other partner. We know we can rely on Team Results.

90,000 Top-12 most successful teams in the history of European championships. Football-Fan rating
The history of the European championship dates back to 1960, when the coveted cup was won by the USSR national team, led by 49-year-old Muscovite Gabriel Kachalin. A powerful uncompromising team with Lev Yashin, Slava Metreveli, Igor Netto and Viktor Ponedelnik in the squad crushed Czechoslovakia in the semifinals (3: 0), after which it also dealt with the Yugoslavs (2: 1) – and forever inscribed its name on the pages of football history.Alas, that triumph for the “Reds” remained the last: never again did the USSR national team or teams from the post-Soviet space raised the silver 8-kg trophy of Henri Delaunay over their heads.
Photo: UEFA
But on the proscenium there were other collectibles, many of whom were lucky more than once. Studying the statistics of the past years, the journalists of the Football-Fana portal asked a logical question: which national teams can be called the best in the history of the Euro and what criteria should be used to evaluate their performances? We decided to use the following scoring system: taking as a basis the finals as an absolute example of success, each team received 1 (silver medalist) or 3 points (tournament winner).Summing up all the points, we put the teams in their places in our unique ranking.
And finally, an important remark: in case of equality of points, the teams that have won the most Euro trophies are ranked higher. Let’s get started!
Trophies: absent
Losses in the final: 1 – EURO 1980
“Red Devils” never in their history raised the coveted trophy of Henri Delaunay over their heads. The Belgians missed the only opportunity to triumph at the Euro almost forty years ago. Then Guy Tisz’s charges on the fields of Italy famously passed their group, taking first place with 4 points in the asset: Belgium defeated Spain (2: 1), and also painted draws with the British (1: 1) and the hostess – “squadra azzurra” (0 : 0). According to the then regulations, the team that took the first line went directly to the final, and the team that became the second (in this case, Italy) had to fight for the bronze medals.

The Belgians in the decisive duel fought their swords with the FRG national team – and fell under the onslaught of attacks by the Bundestim (1: 2), led by the magnificent Horst Hrubesh, who scored a double. The only goal for the Red Devils was scored by Rene Vandereikken, who was playing for Club Brugge at the time. The 26-year-old midfielder scored from a penalty kick delivered in the 75th minute by Romanian referee Nicolae Reinei. So the score became equal (1: 1), but shortly before the final whistle, the aforementioned Hrubesh drove the decisive second nail into the coffin of Belgian hopes.
Trophies: absent
Losses in the final: 2 – European Championship 1960, European Championship 1968
Yugoslavs are Europe’s biggest losers in the 1960s. Having made their way to the finals twice with a difference of eight years, they could not get hold of the trophy, losing alternately to the Soviet Union and Italy.
In 1960, Lubomyr Lovrich’s charges lost to the USSR in extra times (1: 2). It all started with the fact that the Yugi at the very end of the first 45-minute managed to come out ahead thanks to a goal from Milan Galich, but Slava Metreveli, shortly after the teams left the locker rooms, managed to equalize the score. And Victor Ponedelnik put the fat point in the final, which took place in front of 18 thousand spectators who gathered at the Parc des Princes, at the 113th minute.

At EURO 1968 the national team of Yugoslavia again stopped one step away from the coveted cup, having stumbled on the Italian national team. The first match ended with a score of 1: 1. First, the Yugoslav Dragan Dzhaich scored, breaking into the top scorers of the tournament (this was his second goal). However, the “Yugi” could not withstand: ten minutes before the end of the fight, the Italian Domengini lit 1: 1 on the scoreboard of the Roman “Stadio Olimpico”. The regulations of that time assumed a replay in the event that a draw was recorded in the final. Two days later, the squadra azzurra, led by Ferruccio Valcareggi, put Yugoslavia on its shoulder thanks to goals scored by Riva and Anastazi in the first half.It is curious that that triumph of Italy might not have happened – at the stage of the 1/2-nd final, the squadra azzurra passed the USSR national team due to the fact that the coin tossed by the referee fell to the right side …
Trophies: 1 – European Championship 1988
Losses in the final: none
The Flying Dutchmen, along with the national teams of Denmark and Greece, have triumphed at the Euro only once – without losing any of them in the finals.
The Netherlands made their way to the Euro final for the first and last time back in 1988.Then the charges of Rinus Michels not without difficulty overcame their group at number 2: having lost to the USSR in the first round (0: 1), the Oranje had no right to make a mistake – and sequentially dealt with England (3: 1, van Basten’s hat-trick) and Ireland (1: 0, Kieft scored).
Van Basten wearing a Milan jersey. Photo: FC Milan
At the semifinal stage, the “Clockwork Orange” fought back against the FRG, when Ronald Koeman (from the penalty spot) and Marco van Basten responded to Lothar Matthäus’s goal from the spot with timely captures.By the will of fate, the Dutch in the final had to meet with their offenders – the USSR national team, led by Valery Lobanovsky. The rematch was crushing: two unanswered goals, scored by Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten in each half, rested in the “red” goal. By the way, it was van Basten with 5 goals who became the top scorer of that Euro.
Trophies: 1 – EURO 1992
Losses in the final: none
Photo: UEFA
The team that shouldn’t have made it to that European Championship at all (the selection was won by the Yugoslav national team, but for political reasons it was removed from participation in the final stage of the tournament), famously made it to the final, in which it defeated Germany.Richard Möller-Nielsen’s wards with a creak overcame the group stage, reaching the playoffs from second place (4 points: a goalless draw with England, 0: 1 from Sweden and decisive 2: 1 with France).

In the semifinals, the Danes took the lead twice in a fight with the Netherlands – but the Oranje would certainly return to the saddle (2: 2, Henrik Larsen’s double): however, in the penalty shootout, it was “Danish Dynamite” that was more crushing – 5: 4 with the only decisive miss by Marco van Basten. But in the final, Denmark famously rode through the Germans, defeating them with a score of 2: 0 (Jensen, Villefort) – and thereby created one of the greatest sensations in the history of the European Championships.
Trophies: 1 – 2004 European Championship
Losses in the final: none
Photo: UEFA
The most pragmatic, insipid and, frankly, unseen champion is the Greek national team at Euro 2004, which defeated Portugal in the battle for the trophy of the tournament hosts. It is interesting that for both teams that final was the first in history: never before had neither the Greeks, nor the “European Brazilians” made their way to the finals of the European Championship or the World Cup!
Otto Rehhagel’s wards in the decisive battle, which took place at the Lisbon Estadio da Luz in the presence of almost 63 thousand spectators, managed to gain the upper hand thanks to the only goal performed by Angelos Charisteas, who filigreely closed the corner from Angelos Basinos with his head. Neither before, nor after did the “Hellenes” jump so high. And will they jump in the coming decades? Hardly.
Trophies: 1 – 2016 European Championship
Losses in the final: 1 – 2004 European Championship
Shaking off the painful failure that overtook the “European Brazilians” at home Euro-04 (we have already talked about it a little higher in the block dedicated to Greece), the Portuguese gathered their strength for twelve long years to rectify the situation – and finally got hold of the cherished European title.
The team of the great motivator and psychologist Fernando Santos gave a pleasant surprise, having successfully overcome the entire thorny path of the tournament at the 2016 French European Championship.Starting with a slip, the Portuguese with 3 points in the asset took the third place in group F, having failed to get a single victory (+ 0 = 3-1, goal difference 4-4). Moreover, the “European Brazilians” were even on the verge of relegation: in the first two matches, they painted a world with Iceland (1: 1, Nani scored) and Austria (0: 0). In the third round, Cristiano Ronaldo and company had no right to lose points in the game against the uncompromising Hungary – and pulled out a draw on their nerves (3: 3), losing three times in the score!
Photo: UEFA
Fortunately, in the overall standings of the teams that took third places, Santos’ guys took the third place through passing – and still made it to the playoffs. There, the Portuguese consistently defeated Croatia (1: 0, Quaresma’s saving goal in the 117th minute), Poland (1: 1 with a goal by Renato Sanches; on penalties – 5: 3), Wales (2: 0, Ronaldo was scored at the beginning of the second half) and Nani) – and in the final they stumbled upon the hosts of the tournament, the French, who were broken thanks to a goal from Eder in the second extratime (1: 0). Moreover, starting from the 25th minute, Portugal played without its key performer: captain Cristiano Ronaldo suffered a leg injury – and could not continue the match, giving way to Ricardo Quaresme.
Trophies: 1 – EURO 1976
Losses in the final: 1 – EURO 1996
Like Portugal, the Czechs made their way to the final twice – but it was the first attempt that was successful for them, while the second won only silver medals.
The first triumph is dated 1976. The then Czechoslovakia, led by Vaclav Jezek, in the semifinals (the main stage of the tournament still started exactly from 1/2) dealt with the Netherlands. It is curious that the main time ended with a score of 1: 1 – moreover, both goals were scored by the central defender Anton Ondrusha, who first hit the other’s goal, and then his own.In overtime, the Oranje were completely defeated: Zdenek Negoda and Frantisek Vesely completed the final 3: 1 – and allowed the Czechoslovak national team to advance to the final. In the decisive battle for the trophy, there were also overtimes: the main time ended in a draw (2: 2, Jan Schweglik and Karol Dobias scored 2: 0 by the 25th minute, but the Germans restored parity through the efforts of Dieter Müller and Berndt Helzenbein), after which the clarification the winner went on to a penalty shootout. The Czechoslovakians have already performed there (5: 3), who have implemented all the approaches to the “point”.And Antonin Panenka will forever write his name in history, breaking through the goalkeeper of the “Bundestim” Sepp Mayer in a mocking style: the ball with a parachute smoothly dropped down the center of the goal, while the most experienced 32-year-old goalkeeper threw himself into the corner.

But the trophy trip twenty years later turned out to be unsuccessful. At Euro 1996, the now Czech national team stumbled in the final. Having passed Group C with a creak (4 points – a 2: 1 victory over Italy, a merry 3: 3 draw with Russia and a 0: 2 defeat from Germany), the “people’s team” outstripped the “Azzurra squadra” only due to additional indicators. In the quarter-finals, Dusan Ugrin’s wards smashed Portugal minimally (1: 0, Poborski scored), at the next stage, the Czechs passed France on penalties (6: 5, regular time – 0: 0), and in the final they could not cope with Germany on London Wembley (1: 2, “golden goal” – in the asset of Oliver Bierhoff).
Trophies: 1 – EURO 1968
Losses in the final: 2 – EURO 2000, EURO 2012
A bit surprising, the Italians have triumphed at the European Championships only once. It was back in 1968, when the squadra azzurra under the leadership of the ex-mentor of Atalanta and Fiorentina Feruccio Valcareggi first passed the USSR national team thanks to a lucky draw, and in the final replay it dealt with Yugoslavia (2: 0 with goals from Luigi Riva and Pietro Anastasi; the first match – 1: 1, Domengini in the 80th minute scored the goal of Dragan Dzhaich, as we already wrote above).
But further failures followed. In the 20th century, the Italians did not make it past the semifinals (European Championship 1988, defeat 0: 2 from the Soviet Union). Everything has changed in the new century – but so far the “squadra azzurra” cannot overcome its “silver curse” in any way. At Euro 2000, Italy scored 100% of the points in the group (2: 1 with Turkey, 2: 0 with Belgium and 2: 1 with Sweden), passed Romania in the quarterfinals (2: 0), after which they defeated Oranje on penalties ( 3: 1; regular time – 0: 0). But in the final with France, the squadra’s luck turned away completely: having come out ahead in the 55th minute thanks to the accurate shot of Marco Delvecchio, Dino Zoff’s wards missed an assist shot in 90 + 4 minutes from Sylvain Wiltord, and in the first extratime they did not hold back David Trezeguet, who was marked with the “golden goal” and thus presented the “frog” the second in the history of the Eurotrophy.

Twelve years later, Italy’s final defeat was even more devastating. On the fields of Ukraine and Poland, “Scuadra Azzurra” started without much brilliance, in Quartet C they took the second place with 5 points (1: 1 against Spain and Croatia, 2: 0 with Ireland). In a rather boring and pragmatic quarterfinal with the British, Prandelli’s team scored zeros, but in a penalty shootout they managed to shoot the “founders” even despite Montolivo’s unsuccessful approach to the “point” (4: 2, Pirlo struck Hart with a spectacular “panenka” with the third blow). In the semifinals it turned out brighter: by the end of the first half, the German national team was knocked out by a double by Mario Balotelli, after which it was able to score only with a prestige goal performed by Yozil from the penalty spot, which was already realized in extra time (2: 1). But in the final with Spain everything was in one wicket – 0: 4 …
Trophies: 1 – European Championship 1960
Losses in the final: 3 – European Championship 1964, European Championship 1972, European Championship 1988
One of the main losers of Euro, of course, is the Soviet team.Judge for yourself: for one final won (the memorable battle with Yugoslavia, which fell on the first tournament draw in history), we have three lost.

To whom did the Reds concede? Let’s look: at the 1964 European Championship in Spain, the Soviet Union team of Konstantin Beskov, who is in the status of the current trophy owner, defeated the Danes in the semifinals (3: 0 with goals from Voronin, Ponedelnik and Ivanov), but in the final they lost to the hosts (1: 2) – Khusainov already scored Pereda’s goal in the 8th minute, but the Roha Fury shortly before the final whistle snatched the victory through the efforts of Marcelino. So – only “silver” and, accordingly, only 1 point in the overall piggy bank of the Football-Fan rating.
The next final had to wait eight years. At the 1972 European Championship in Belgium, the USSR national team, led by Anatoly Ponomarev, beat the Hungarians minimally at the 1/2 final stage (1: 0, Anatoly Konkov scored), but in the final they hopelessly twisted on the Eisele under the pressure of the FRG national team – 0: 3 with a double by Gerd Müller and a goal by Herbert Wimmer. We remember that this Eurotitle was the first for the Bundestim.
By the way, it was on that Euro that the rule of two substitutions was used for the first time, allowing teams to make adjustments to the composition right during the game.A penalty shoot-out was also introduced, replacing the notorious coin toss that made the Italian team reach the final at Euro 1968, leaving the Soviet Union behind.

Finally, the last defeat of the Reds in the finals happened at the 1988 European Championship. The USSR national team confidently passed the group stage, becoming the first in Quartet B with 5 points in the asset (then, we recall, they were also awarded 2 points for a victory). Hammer and Sickle defeated the Dutch (1: 0) and the “founders” (3: 1 with goals from Aleinikov, Mikhailichenko and Pasulko), and also set a world match with Ireland (1: 1, Protasov equalized the score). In the semifinals, the Soviet Union did not notice the “squadra azzurra” (2: 0), rolling out its defense in the second half through the efforts of Litovchenko and Protasov.
Day X has come – on June 25, 1988, the Reds clashed for the championship title with the Oranje, whom they had already beaten in the group. But this time it was not so smooth. At the Munich Olympiastadion, Valery Lobanovskiy’s team lost to Rinus Michels’ Netherlands with a score of 0: 2, conceding a goal from Ruud Gullit (32nd minute) and Marco van Basten (54th minute). This is where our fairy tale ended: never again did the teams of the post-Soviet space reach the finals. Over these thirty-odd years, the Russian national team has managed to jump above everyone else: in 2008, the tricolor reached the semifinals, in which it was devastatingly defeated by Spain (0: 3).However, getting into this stage of the competition automatically allowed the Russians to share the bronze medals with the loser of the other semifinals – the Turkish national team.
Trophies: 2 – EURO 1984, EURO 2000
Losses in the final: 1 – 2016 EURO
But the French had two triumphs at the European Championships. There could have been three trophies – but in 2016, the Blues unexpectedly lost to Ronaldo Portugal with a bloodless loss in extra times (0: 1).
In terms of successful Euros, the first le bleu gold medal was won in 1984. Michel Platini made a huge contribution to that final “Victoria” at the home championship, setting a performance record for one European Championship (9 goals), which can easily become eternal. The “frogs” then passed their group in one breath (1: 0 with Denmark, 5: 0 with Belgium and 3: 2 with Yugoslavia; out of 9 goals at that stage, 7 were scored by Platini). In the 1/2-nd final, the Blues had to suffer with Portugal (3: 2; Domergue, 24, 114, Platini, 119 – Jordao, 74, 98), and in the final Michel Hidalgo’s team beat the Spanish national team of Miguel Muñoz with a score 2: 0 (Platini and Bellon scored in the second half).

The second and currently the last European Cup was won by France at the 2000 European Championship, held on the fields of Belgium and the Netherlands. Roger Lemerre’s charges left the group in second place, losing to Oranje in the last round (2: 3), but before that they beat Denmark (3: 0) and the Czech Republic (2: 1). In the playoffs, the “frogs” dealt with Spain (2: 1) and Portugal (2: 1 with the “golden goal” of Zidane from the penalty spot in the 117th minute – a cannon strike!), And in the final again thanks to the “golden goal ”Was beaten by“ squadra azzurra ”(2: 1, this time David Trezeguet scored a decisive shot under the crossbar).
Trophies: 3 – European Championship 1964, European Championship 2008, European Championship 2012
Losses in the final: 1 – 1984 EURO
The most successful national teams in the history of participation in the European Championships were Germany and Spain – they each have 3 won titles. However, Roja Fury loses to the Bundestim in terms of the number of finals – and that is why it is on the second line in the Football-Fan rating!
We have already indirectly mentioned the victories and defeats of the “red fury” in the blocks dedicated to other countries. But it will not be out of place to recall the successes. Spain’s first triumph at the European Championship (then the European Cup) dates back to 1964. In the 1/2-nd final, Jose Villalonga’s team knocked out Hungary in extra times with accurate shots from Pereda and Amancio (2: 1). And in the final, through the efforts of Jesús Maria Pereda and Marcelino, “Roja Fury” defeated the USSR national team (2: 1) – and tried on her first Euro gold medal around her neck.

44 years later, the Spaniards repeated their success on the fields of Austria and Switzerland, passing Group D, where rivals were Russia (4: 1), Sweden (2: 1) and Greece (2: 1). In the quarterfinals against Italy, after 0: 0 in regulation time, Fury Roja was more successful on penalties than Scuadra Azzurra (4: 2). In the next stage, the Spaniards managed to easily pass Russia (this time 3: 0), and in the final the team of the “Sage of Ortalez” Luis Argones defeated Germany thanks to the only goal, which Fernando Torres scored in their 33rd minute.

And finally, four years later, at the next Euro Forum, Spain managed to defend the champion’s title: in the group “Roja Fury” fought swords with Italy (1: 1), Ireland (4: 0) and Croatia (1: 0) – and, taking single first place with 7 points and 6-1 goal difference, advanced to the next stage. In the playoffs, “Forester’s” gang Vicente del Bosque successively passed France (2: 0) and Portugal (0: 0, on penalties – 4: 2), and in the final the “red fury” cut Italy into a nut (4: 0).The best player of that tournament was the Spaniard Andres Iniesta, and his compatriot Fernando Torres received the Golden Boot.
But there was also a defeat in the final of Euro 1984 against France (0: 2), which, nevertheless, brought the Spaniards another credit point in our rating!
Trophies: 3 – European Championship 1972, European Championship 1980, European Championship 1996
Losses in the final: 3 – EURO 1976, EURO 1992, EURO 2008
And, finally, the best team in the rating of the most successful national teams in the history of the European Championships according to Football-Fan version, without the slightest doubt, is the German national team, which made its way to the European Championship six times, of which it won three.Of course, the results of the FRG national team, as the direct predecessor of the current Mannschaft, were included in the overall standings.
The Bundestim’s first triumph dates back to 1972: then the national team, led by Helmut Schön, passed Belgium in the semifinals (2: 0, Gerd Müller’s double) and crushed the USSR team in the final (3: 0) thanks to two goals from the irrepressible Müller, between with which the exact blow of Herbert Wimmer was “attached”. Unsurprisingly, the super-productive Gerd Müller became the top scorer of Euro 1972. He was also recognized as the best player in the tournament.

Eight years later, the team of now Jupp Derval passed the group stage without defeat (1: 0 with the Czechoslovakians, 3: 2 with the Netherlands and 0: 0 in an unsolved battle with the Greeks) – and, taking first place in their quartet A, received a direct ticket to the final, where she beat the Belgians thanks to the “doublet” performed by Horst Hrubesh (2: 1). German Klaus Allofs got the golden boot, having scored 3 goals in a group match with Oranje, and the MVP at that Euro was not determined. However, this honorary title can easily be assigned to the hero of the finale, Hrubesh.
And, finally, the third triumph of the German national team at Euro happened in 1996 on the English fields: Berti Vogts’ charges led their quartet under the letter C without defeat (2: 0 against the Czech Republic, 3: 0 with Russia and 0: 0 with the Italians) , after which Croatia (2: 1) and the hosts of the tournament (1: 1, on penalties – 6: 5) went to the playoffs. In the decisive match, the Bundestim clashed with the Czech Republic – and dealt with it again, albeit not without a hassle, unloading two goals (Oliver Bierhoff’s double with the golden goal in the 95th minute) and conceding only one in response (Berger from the penalty spot ).

Do not forget about the lost finals: in 1976, the guys of Helmut Schen lost to Czechoslovakia (2: 2, on penalties – 3: 5), in 1992 Berti Vogts’ charges unexpectedly lost to Denmark (0: 2), and in 2008 – m the team of Joachim Lev failed to cope with Spain (0: 1). Nevertheless, with 12 points in the asset, the German national team confidently leads the rating of the best European teams according to Football-Fan – and is unlikely to give up its positions in the coming years!

90,000 What is the key to the success of national football teams? – Proof sports – Blogs
Football has long held the leading position in popularity among all sports in the world, however, the key to success in football is still the subject of public discussion and scientific research. The matches of the World Cup held in Russia were watched by 3.572 billion spectators, which is more than half of the world’s population aged four years and older. This championship brought a lot of surprises. The Russian national team delighted its fans by reaching the quarterfinals, and the champion of the previous world championship, Germany, did not leave the group for the first time since 1938. In this article, I will consider the hypotheses and conclusions about the success factors of national football teams in scientific literature and the media.
Let’s start by defining the success of teams. There are three possible levels of success determination: in a single match, in one championship, and aggregated by matches played over 4 years (points and FIFA rating). What is the difference between these methods? The more matches we take into account, the more stable the team’s result will be, since the role of randomness, which has a significant contribution to determining the outcome of an individual match, is reduced by mutual compensation of luck and bad luck in different matches. Most scientific research uses FIFA points and rating as a measure of national teams’ success, since this characteristic is more sensitive to global factors; while the media are more likely to discuss the outcomes of individual championships and matches, since it is much more interesting to observe the triumph of teams on the field than the position of teams in the FIFA rating table.
When explaining the success of national teams, the main interest for scientists is country socio-economic and geopolitical factors. The main factors include GDP per capita, population size and climatic conditions. It can be assumed that the country’s wealth expands the opportunities for the development of sports infrastructure and investment in the talent of athletes, the population expands the possibilities for selecting talented athletes, and the climatic conditions create a favorable environment for the development of professional and amateur sports. The history of the development of football in the country, measured as the number of years since joining the FIFA association or the first international match of the national team, also has a positive impact on the development of football in the country and the success of the national team. Another factor that increases the success of the national teams is the hosting of the FIFA World Cup in the country. This effect can be explained by the lack of the need to qualify for the World Cup, as well as the advantage of the home field for the team. However, scientists still have not found an answer to the question about the reasons for the home advantage, is it the absence of stress from the qualifying stages, physical comfort from the climate and lack of flights during the championship, support from fans or psychological comfort from being in familiar conditions? Despite the differences in interpretation, most researchers agree on the influence of these factors on the success of national football teams (Houston, Wilson, 2002; Hoffman at al., 2002; Macmillan, Smith, 2007; Leeds, Leeds, 2009).
In addition to the main factors, the research tested the influence of the colonial and communist past, oil exports. As you know, football originated in England, quickly moved to other metropolises and in this way spread to the colonies. However, we failed to find a statistically significant effect of the colonial past (Leeds, Leeds, 2009). All other things being equal, the FIFA rating is higher in post-communist countries (Leeds, Leeds, 2009), which is explained by the synergy of previous massive investments in sports before the change of communist regimes and the increased freedoms in the country during the regime change, which made it possible to fully realize the return on past investments. It is noteworthy that the former Soviet republics, with the exception of Russia, are an exception to this rule due to the absence of national teams in these countries during the Soviet period (Macmillan, Smith, 2007). Oil exports, on the one hand, provide opportunities for investment in the development of football, but on the other hand, they expose countries to the so-called “resource curse”, when the endowment of resources makes the citizens of the country lazy and confident in an endless flow of wealth. As a result of statistical analysis, it was found that the positive effect of oil exports turned out to be dominant, with only the fact of oil exports being important, but not its volumes (Leeds, Leeds, 2009).
Another group of success factors includes the characteristics of the national culture. Despite the difficulties in measurement, the researchers were able to capture two interesting effects. First, the players’ enthusiasm for playing the national anthem (assessed by two experts on a scale from 1 to 7 for verbal and non-verbal cues when watching a match on tape), reflecting patriotism and a sense of social identity, contributed to a decrease in the number of goals conceded and an increase in the likelihood of a team winning in match at the European Championship in 2016 (Slater et al., 2018). Secondly, it was possible to record a positive effect of the presence of a culture of trust and collectivism (the advantage of collective interests over individual interests) for the FIFA rating of national football teams, and this effect increases with the growth of the market value of all players playing for the national team (Zaitseva, 2018). Since in football, teamwork and the effectiveness of each player on the field are of great importance, patriotism and a culture of trust and collectivism contribute to the players’ interest in the overall result and enhance the ability to interact.
In addition to country-wide factors, the scientific literature has tested the hypothesis that it is possible to “buy” the success of a national team in the World Cup with player bonuses (Coupe, 2007). As a result, it was concluded that the team’s success is not associated with bonuses, which indicates a more complex system of motivation for athletes at the World Championships. Indeed, in interviews, footballers often state their desire to defend the honor of the country, playing for the national team, and it seems that this desire cannot be bought with money. In addition, the World Cup is the largest international platform for viewing players for subsequent purchase by clubs, so the performance of players may also be motivated by the desire to develop their individual club careers.
We now turn to a discussion of the success factors of national teams that are discussed in the media. As already noted, the most attention in the media is paid to individual cases, out of a huge set we will consider several of the most striking examples: Germany, Iceland and, of course, Russia.
Germany is notable for the fact that this national team won the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and then did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Let’s look at the reasons for the success and failure of the German national team highlighted in the media. The first characteristic of the German national team is the culture of success and self-confidence inherent in the people of Germany. According to observers, this helped the German team in 2014 to “work” in matches from start to finish with firm confidence in success, but this same trait played a cruel joke with the team at the World Cup in Russia [1].Excessive confidence and arrogance of the coach and the team, with a lack of experience of successful joint performances for six months before the World Cup, led to tactical mistakes and defeats. In addition, the lack of competition for leadership in the German Bundesliga in the past five years has led to an acute shortage of equal matches for the Bayern leadership team. As a result, the strongest players of this club did not have the experience of playing under the pressure that they experienced at the World Cup in Russia as champions who need to defend their title.
Another strength of German football is the development model aimed at nurturing national talent. For this purpose in Germany there is a restriction on foreign ownership of football clubs, as such investors are usually interested in quick profits, while raising talent requires a long-term investment. As a result, German clubs do not compete to buy mid-sized players in the foreign market and avoid overpaying for them by channeling these funds towards buying national young talent. As a result, the success / financial cost ratio of German football clubs is much higher than that of English football clubs. In addition to developing the talent of its players, Germany also invests in the training of football coaches. The head coach of the German national team Joachim Loew has been in office for almost 13 years and has never left the World Cup before the semifinals until last year. However, in the case of the last championship, he is accused of needlessly neglecting young talents and too many experiments with the composition [2].
Finally, in the German national team in the last championship, racial conflict between native Germans and players with roots from other countries was noticed. The journalists found out that the players even came up with offensive nicknames for each other [3]. The split in the team undermined the atmosphere for interaction and cooperation, leading the team to failure at the World Cup. Thus, we see that a well-built system for the development of football in Germany can also fail in an unfortunate combination of circumstances, which happened at the last championship.
Another example of outstanding success is Iceland, which managed to climb 78 places in the FIFA rankings in 4 years. In 2016, the country first qualified for the European Championship and reached the quarterfinals stage, where it lost to the future finalist, the host of the French Championship. Iceland has a unique football talent development system. This system is based on the quality and availability of infrastructure for children’s sports, an organized selection system with maximum coverage, a semi-professional national football league that exports 10-15 players to the international football market annually. In addition, experts note the coherence of the game and the cohesion of the team, which helped the team to succeed [4].
And finally, the success of the Russian national team at the last world championship is undoubtedly worthy of discussion. One of the factors that contributed to successful performances, according to journalists, is team cohesion [5]. The players themselves in interviews noted the importance of team support in their success [6]. Another important factor is the support of the fans, which is one of the components of the home field advantage.Indeed, the support of the Russian national team fans in this championship was colossal, which illustrates the importance of this channel of influence in the statistical manifestation of home advantage in research. In addition, the accusations of incomplete dedication of the players, which were often heard earlier against the players of the national team, did not arise at this championship, apparently, again due to the increased sense of duty to the country among the players at the home world championship. Many also note the work of the head coach of the national team, Stanislav Cherchesov, who managed to create a friendly atmosphere in the team and motivate the players to complete dedication.
Now that we have learned the main reasons for the success of national teams according to scientific articles and the media, we see that among them there is a clear coincidence – this is the cohesion and motivation of the teams. We can also see that there are different development models in football, but it is clear that with the number of native-born players dominating the teams, the development of national football talent will remain a key factor in the success of the national teams.

Background: Back in 2006, the women’s national team of Belarus was still preparing to become a triumphant, and Elena Levchenko, Ekaterina Snytina and Anastasia Veremeenko were just beginning their
The national team, which previously lived in the B division, fought in qualifying for the EuroBasket with Greece, Hungary and Bulgaria. The winners of the groups and four winners of the second places out of five directly got to the European Championship, the rest continued to fight in the next stages of the selection.
Before the last match of the group stage, the position of the Belarusians was not the best: in order to go further without a headache, it was necessary to beat the Greek women with a difference of 3 points. The Greek national team, by the way, was important not to lose more than 16 points. The advantage was that the match took place in the Minsk Sports Palace, where the Belarusians did not lose in the qualification.
Match: To say that the game was intense is to say nothing. In the first half alone, the leader changed 6 times, and the maximum difference in the score was 4 points. The Belarusians played on the fans’ nerves, missing from the penalty line, and a few minutes before the end of normal time, the guests punished them for this – 56:57. True, in the next attack, Anastasia Veremeenko returned the leadership to our team, and Ekaterina Snytina increased the advantage. The most important points of Belarus in this qualification were on the account of Natalia Trofimova – 63:60.
Thanks to this victory, the women’s team made it to the final of the Eurobasket for the first time.
Quote: “Are there any chances of getting to the Beijing Olympics? Of course have. The potential of the team is enormous: the players are young, the roster is well balanced, ”head coach Anatoly Buyalsky seemed to know something even then.
October 7, 2007, Belarus – Latvia
Tournament: European Championship
Meaning: first “bronze” of Eurobasket
Background: Belarusians came to Eurobasket in Italy as underdogs – they were 14th out of 16 in the ranking of participating teams. That, however, did not prevent our girls from taking second place in Group D, losing only to the Spaniards.
At the second stage it was more difficult: the national team lost to the French and Russian women, “thanks to” which they had to fight with the hosts of the tournament for the last place in the playoffs. Fortunately, the double-doubles of Elena Levchenko (18 + 10 rebounds) and Anastasia Veremeenko (12 + 11 rebounds) allowed our team to visually easily beat Italy (66:51) and continue their performance in the tournament.
In the quarterfinals, the Belarusians advanced to the Czech Republic, the European champion, which had suffered only one defeat in Italy before, and even then, most likely, due to underestimation of the opponents (47:54 against Germany).Among other things, it was necessary to play the next day after the super-intense match against Italy.
Hardly anyone seriously considered the possibility of the victory of the young Belarusian team over the Czech Republic. But it turned out that in the role of the underdog, the girls felt even better: they worked in defense, held back the leaders of their rivals, and waited for their chance. And they waited! The last quarter of the Belarusians was almost perfect: the Czech women could not score 8.5 minutes, and our girls with each hit were getting closer to a sensational victory – 52:46 and a ticket to qualifying for the Olympic Games in Beijing! Who would have thought that the national team, which even a year ago did not even have experience in playing on-top tournaments, would become one of the four strongest teams in Europe?
Belarus lost to Spain in the semifinals – 54:70, but this did not end the fight at Eurobasket 2007.
Match: One of the main goals of Eurobasket 2007 – getting to the Olympics – was achieved, and in the match for the third place against Latvia the national team of Belarus played absolutely uninhibited. Having started the meeting with a pleasant 8-0, the Belarusians got involved in hit-and-run and gave up a quarter – 16:17. True, after that they turned on their own proprietary defense, against which the Latvians who were bled from their injuries had no arguments.
At some point in the second half, the advantage of our girls reached 25 points, but it was too early to rejoice: rivals from the Baltic states found strength for a comeback, reducing the gap to only “-4”.Fortunately, Tatiana Troina’s three-pointer and Natalya Marchenko’s most important 2 points removed all questions about the winner: the Belarusian national team is the bronze medalist of Eurobasket 2007!
Quote: “For me, the most striking event is the awarding of bronze medals to us. An indescribable feeling when you stand under the gun of TV cameras and you know that the whole world is looking at you, and especially the fans of your native country, for whom we have tried, “Natalya Trofimova, now heading the national team, in that” bronze “match scored 12 points and 2 rebounds.
13 June 2008, Brazil – Belarus
Tournament: qualification of the 2008 Olympics
Meaning: a ticket to the Olympic Games in Beijing
Background: To qualify for their first Olympic Games, the women’s team needed to be in the top five qualifying teams. The first step was to leave the group: the Belarusians lost to Cuba, but thanks to the success in the meeting with Taiwan, they made their way to the knockout round, in which a victory over Brazil gave a direct ticket to Beijing.
Match: Sometimes it seems that all important meetings the women’s team cannot hold without nerves for themselves and their fans. So it happened with the Brazilians: thanks to the amazing second quarter, the Belarusians took the lead and confidently played the game according to their own scenario.
Everything changed before the final 10-minute: the quarrel between the leader and the coach stirred up the Latin American team, gave it an impulse, and Brazil almost knocked out our team on emotions. Fortunately, the girls came to their senses on time and, losing “-2” 5 seconds before the end of regular time, they were able to bring the matter to overtime.
In an additional 5-minute, however, the Brazilian girls’ fuse dried up: already a minute before the final siren it became clear who would go to the Olympics. 86:79 – this victory became one of the most significant in the history of the women’s national team of Belarus.
Natalya Marchenko turned out to be the heroine of overtime and finished the meeting with 21 points and 2 interceptions in the asset. And Anastasia Veremeenko scored a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Quote: “I have not yet fully realized what actually happened. But I feel the same thrill as after winning the bronze medal of the European Championship … Although in the last seconds of the match it seemed: after the siren, there is not enough strength for emotions, but for a smile. She was insanely tired. In the end, with great difficulty, I found the strength to execute free throws. What is there – just barely able to stand on my feet! ” – can you imagine what emotions Natalia Marchenko, the winner of the game, was experiencing at that moment?
October 1, 2010, Belarus – Russia
Tournament: 2010 World Cup
Value: reaching the semifinals of the World Cup
Background: the Belarusian national team arrived at its first world championship in the status of one of the strongest teams in Europe and began to prove this already at the first group stage. The defeat from Australia is understandable easily, because the opponent was the vice-champion of the 2008 Olympics. The Belarusians ensured their entry into the second round of the tournament after the victory over China, and the successful game with Canada only reinforced the idea: this squad is capable of a lot.
But reaching the playoffs turned out to be “thin”. In the last match, Belarus and Greece claimed a place in the quarter-finals – an opponent who had old grievances against our team. Fortunately, this time our girls did not disappoint: the double-double of Elena Levchenko (24 + 11 rebounds) and 5 assists by Natalia Marchenko ensured the victory for Belarus – 74:70.
Match: the Russian national team became the rival of our basketball players in the quarter-finals. An excellent symbiosis of experience and youth, flavored by a naturalized American – the Russians seemed like a terrible option in the quarterfinals. They never lost, upsetting even the Spanish Red Fury.
Major defeats at the official and preparatory tournaments were still kept in my memory: Russia was stronger at the last top championships, and at the sparring in Minsk right before the World Cup, it simply left no chances for the Belarusians.Simply put, our girls have never played out on their neighbors until this moment. Before the match, this was also recalled in the Russian press, allowing themselves not very pleasant statements about us.
Perhaps this psychological factor also played a role. The Belarusians got involved in the work from the first minutes and were simply stronger than their rivals in the game. I was delighted with the defense: everyone knew exactly who they could trade for, which side to close to a certain opponent, how to put the back “big”. Suffice it to say that the Russian national team had their worst offensive match, gaining only 53 points in 40 minutes.
And while the Russians were looking for the keys to the protection of the Belarusian women, they stubbornly went to the goal and in the fourth quarter at +15 made it clear that they would not give up the victory – 70:53. Elena Levchenko was a little short of the double-double on duty, and Yulia Dureiko put in some cool three-pointers that cut off 90,624 Russian women from the path to comeback.
Quote: “I understand that owners are usually favored. But some moments caused total misunderstanding. I turn to the commissioner – he nods, they say, yes, the referees are wrong. And the lawlessness continues … Probably, the FIBA Refereeing Committee needs to draw some conclusions, because a similar picture was observed with Australia. The Czech women had one goal: to squeeze inward, to make contact and provoke fouls … ”, – Anatoly Buyalsky, head coach of the women’s national team of Belarus.
The story about the 2010 World Cup should be finished at the match against the Russian national team. I don’t want to remember the semi-final: according to the majority, the referee, who played at the home World Cup, was literally dragged to overtime by the referee, giving her a ticket to the final (77:81 OT).
June 24, 2015, Lithuania – Belarus
Tournament: European Championship 2015
Meaning: reaching the Eurobasket semifinals and qualifying for the 2016 Olympics
Background: Belarus also claimed to host the championship, but Hungary and Romania preferred our application. Which, of course, upset many, especially after the shocking organization of Eurobasket: there were cracks in the parquet in one of the halls in Romania.
The very first match of the championship turned out to be dramatic: the girls were inferior to the Italians, and only thanks to the hit of Tatiana Likhtarovich was it possible to transfer the matter to overtime. There the Belarusians were stronger and, having shown willpower and character, won – 85:76.
Perhaps that match greatly influenced the atmosphere within the team, because 2 subsequent meetings turned out to be simply magical: the Polish women (65:49), Turkish women (67:52) and Greek women (82:57) were defeated in turn. From the first place Belarus stepped into the second stage and … almost got left out of the playoffs. In all three matches, our girls lost endings, and only the reserve of the first group stage allowed them to be in the Top-8 of the tournament.
Match: Lithuania became the rival of the Belarusian national team in 1/4 finals. In a sense, our girls were lucky, because in the first playoff match he could meet with Russia, Spain or Serbia. But the strongest are lucky: “Dream Team” made it to the semifinals, and at the same time kept their dreams of the Olympics – the second in its history.
Although the game with Lithuanians, of course, went according to all the canons of a drama with a happy ending: here you have dominance in the first half (33:19), and an unpleasant fall of Elena Levchenko, which left the center out of the game due to injury, and the subsequent comeback of Lithuania , and THAT IS THE MOST program of Ekaterina Snytina, which almost cost the Belarusians a victory, and the emotions of success.
Immediately 5 basketball players of our national team scored “10+” points, and the main goal – the Olympic qualification – has already been achieved. Unfortunately, it was not possible to get Eurobasket medals due to defeats from Serbia (72:74) and Spain (58:74).
Quote: “We would have immediately buried Katya Snytina right here if we had conceded. The Olympic qualifier was just a second away. Probably, the person was simply overwhelmed in a stressful situation. At that moment she had some crazy eyes, and she threw this ball into the distance … Fortunately, everything worked out! ” – the center of the national team of Belarus Anastasia Veremeenko – about the last seconds of the quarterfinals with Lithuania.
19 June 2016, Belarus – South Korea
Tournament: qualification for the 2016 Olympics
Meaning: a ticket to the Olympic Games in Rio
Background: 5 tickets to the Olympics were awarded at the qualifying tournament in France. The system was exactly the same as before: if you win in the quarterfinals, you go to Brazil. No – if you please be the best team in the consolation playoffs.
Despite being defeated by South Korea in the last seconds (65:66), the girls advanced from the group in first place, reaching the playoffs in China.Unfortunately, they failed to beat the Asians: an inexplicable failure in the third quarter (14:29) forced the Belarusian women to continue their nervous struggle in the tournament.
In the semi-final of the consolation playoffs, Belarus defeated Arentina (84:44), and in the final they had to meet with South Korea – the one that literally snatched the victory from our team in the group stage.
Match: Fortunately, this game was strikingly different from the meeting at the start of qualification – what a 12-0 spurt in the first quarter! The actions in defense have completely changed, thanks to which the Koreans barely scored 16 points in half (!) Of the match. The girls changed their traditions and did without a valid ending, keeping a 10-point distance from their rivals for the rest of the time.
Tatiana Troina’s three-pointer put a point 5 minutes before the end of the fourth quarter: the Koreans, of course, could not win back at -16. And you can endlessly watch the team’s emotions after the final siren:
Quote: “We made it to the Games. The team has proven its strength, will again defend the honor of the country. You know, when you sing the anthem, goosebumps run through your body, and you realize that Belarus is significant in world basketball, in a matter that we are trying to do professionally.Getting to the Olympics is the apotheosis ”, – Anatoly Buyalsky, head coach of the women’s national team of Belarus.

Mikhail Galaktionov, senior coach of the Russian youth national football team (U17)
The team born in 1998 is the second youth team in Russian history to qualify for the World Cup.For Sovetsky Sport, this was an occasion to talk with a young coach, a graduate of the Faculty of Management in Team Sports, Mikhail Galaktionov, who led Russia to the Euro semifinals.
“Teachers, fitness trainer on the German national team”
In the semifinals – Germany. Why is it interesting?
Slimness, model. The Germans play ball control: they have a team with pronounced attacking players who are not afraid to take the initiative – in general, guys with good dribbling, excellent technical skills.
How are they similar, stronger or weaker than England (1: 0) and France (0: 1), with which the Russian national team played at Euro?
They are similar in style to both teams. The French are brighter in personality, in athleticism. But Germany is very strong just by the system.
Do German youth teams really play the same football?
Yes. I saw the German national team born in 1995: model, structure – everything is identical. There is a school, there is a system, there is a high level of organization.
Two teachers came to the Euro from the German junior national team, and indeed there are almost more members of the coaching staff and staff than players.
We also have a lot of thoughts on this topic. The guys work at training camps, don’t go to school, they don’t get enough knowledge, and exams are just around the corner. Teachers are needed, but this should not be a one-time action, but a systematic direction. We noticed that in the same German national team there are fitness coaches, rehabilitation coaches and other specialists in different fields.
The Dutch generally take exams at training camps, they have it legally prescribed.
That’s it. There are no trifles in sports. And in this regard, Russia has a large reserve for development.
You must be completely calm before the match with the Germans. The task is completed, the team got to the world championship.
Sincerely – no, we have not calmed down. Yes, we took an important step.We understand that in Russian history, except for the 1996 team, no one went to the World Championship yet. But since we climbed so high, we need to move on and cling to the maximum.
New challenge – gold?
We have three tasks: getting out of the group, getting to the world championship, reaching the final and winning it. We have completed two.
“Five hours of tactics”
In every Euro match we have seen coaching accents. For example, in the match against England you put defender Kudryavtsev in the support zone. Do we understand correctly that he had a personal assignment?
The tenth number of the British, Edwards is the opponent’s strong side, the game is mainly built through him. They wanted to unload Makhatadze (a defensive player or a drawn-out playmaker) and put a defensive player in the support zone. There was no challenge to play Edwards personally, but there had to be density in the area where this player works. We believe that Kudryavtsev coped with the task. Edwards possessed the ball at the border of 2/3 of the zone, but practically did not get into the penalty area.
Another episode – a corner, after which the Russian team scored a goal.
This is already a problematic position of the British. We knew that in many group stage matches they play the set zone zone, but there is a certain amount of space when serving. It was necessary to take the British to the near post in order to make room for Tataev at the far post.We did it in the lesson before the game, and with God’s help everything went well.
Do you spend a lot of time analyzing the game of your future opponent?
I watch the whole match of the opponent, once again I do it with the coaching staff. Then we sort it all out with the team. It turns out about five hours.
That is, about five hours only for the analysis of the opponent’s matches.
Yes.
Are you a meticulous coach when it comes to tactics? So Artem Dziuba called Unai Emery before the “coach” and two years later, when the “coach” won a lot with Sevilla.
I don’t think it’s worth throwing in terms. It is a normal workflow in modern football where the coach analyzes and watches a lot of football. It is clear that the Russian national team wants to dictate the conditions itself, but there are strengths and weaknesses of the opponent that cannot be ignored.
“In the Russian championship, the players give up slack”
I spoke with the England head scout. He called Russia the “Red Machine”.Like, every match for the national team is like the last: cool discipline, recoil. In general, he saw what we lacked before, given the talent, but at the same time the laxity of Kokorin, Smolov. What is this: a phenomenon of a new generation, more conscious than the previous ones?
I think you saw that the guys are consciously and efficiently approach to business. They understand what regime and discipline are. God grant that all this was not in vain. We try to find new motivation every day, to set tasks. We constantly say: you can make mistakes, lose, but there should be a return from the first to the last minute. We watch how they play in England, Germany, Spain: the team can lose in the score, but if it gives in, the audience applauds the players.
“England, Germany, Spain …”. And Russia?
Well, unfortunately, our football lacks that kind of dedication. Derby, one-time games – it happens, but systemic – no. Judging by the press, again: when Willian moved from Anji to Chelsea, he said that Mourinho was tired in training more than he was from the entire Russian championship. The intensity of the lesson, the return – everything is at the maximum level. In the Russian championship, some allow themselves to be weak, so the pace is not so high.
Match “Spartak” – CSKA – just that case?
I would not say.
But did you watch it?
Yes.
So what is the reason for such an advantage for CSKA?
Not for me to assess the Spartak players.Yakin said that there are problems getting out of defense. So it was.
Okay. But can we say that 4: 0 is not only Spartak – CSKA, but also Slutsky – Yakin. For example, we saw what the army team did: instead of possessing the ball in someone else’s half, as it was in the first round, CSKA made Spartak sort of attack …
This is in time for the question of how to analyze games. We studied, understood the weaknesses – we found a model of the game that will bring results. The army team needed space for sharp attacks, for quick Musa. The Spartak defense players were lured away, free zones appeared. The score is 4: 0. But, again, it’s not for me to judge Yakin.
“Youth need trust”
In England there are Edwards and at least a couple of other guys of high individual qualities. From France, the players are taken to the second team of Arsenal. What’s with ours?
Of course, there are talented guys who show their individuality. But due to the system of Russian football, it is difficult for them to get into the basis of their clubs. What is the reason? In the dominance of mediocre legionnaires. In the derby for Spartak, the player born in 1997, Georgy Melkadze, made his debut. God grant that the trend continues, that young players are trusted. And, again, not one-time, but systemically. For example, I know (because I worked at the club for a long time) that Dynamo Moscow has a very promising double. But will the guys be given a chance ?!
“Studied with Chistyakov, there are connections”
Do you know foreign languages?
Yes, English.At a certain level.
So working with legionnaires won’t be a problem for you?
Not.
Did you study at the university?
I have two degrees. You could even say three. Basic – the Institute of Physical Education, while still playing football at a certain level. The second is the Faculty of Management in Team Sports of the RMA Business School and the third is the Graduate School of Coaches.
Who did you meet on the RMA course?
We got a very good group: German Chistyakov, Yuri Pereskokov (was the coach of Spartak goalkeepers), Alexander Podshivalov (coach of Tom’s goalkeepers) … Many guys who studied work in good positions in agencies for the development of their sport: commercial , sports directors.
