Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse: Mike Powell to have jersey retired
He’s one of the greatest players in the history of lacrosse, and now his jersey will be forever immortalized by the Syracuse Orange.
On Monday, Syracuse announced that Mike Powell will have his No. 22 jersey retired at a ceremony this season on Saturday, March 11 at the JMA Wireless Dome when the Orange host Johns Hopkins.
Another #22 in the rafters at the Dome.

Powell becomes the second men’s lacrosse player to have his jersey retired by Syracuse and the third overall after Gary Gait and Katie Rowan had theirs retired last year.
In addition to being one of the greatest in the sport’s history, Powell is also one of the best and most exciting athletes to ever don a Syracuse uniform in any sport. His game was defined by other-worldly quickness and exceptional stick skills that made him downright electric. The way he played made him an inspiration to an entire generation of young lacrosse players. If you were lucky enough to watch him play, you’ll never forget it.
The excitement that he generated over the course of his legendary career totaled itself into a list of accomplishments and accolades that place him in a category nearly by himself.
He was the first two-time winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy (Lyle Thompson being the only other, although he shared one of them with his brother, Miles), and is the only ‘Cuse men’s lacrosse player to earn first-team All-American honors in all four years of his career. He’s also the only ever four-time winner of the Jack Turnbull Award, presented annually to the best attackman in the nation.
On top of everything else, he also knew how to deliver when it mattered most. He was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team three times and won the W. H. Brine Award, given to the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Division I Championship game, both times SU won the title with him in 2002 and 2004.
Powell, who played for SU from 2001-2004, is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 307 points, surpassing the previous record of 287 held by both of his brothers, Casey and Ryan. He’s one of the most balanced players in school history, as his 150 goals is sixth-most and his 157 assists is fourth-most. In NCAA Tournaments, he has the most assists (34 in 13 games) and second-most points (58) of any SU player all-time.
However you slice it, you come up with Mike Powell as one of the greatest Syracuse athletes and lacrosse players ever. And now, he will take his rightful place up in the Dome rafters.
Congratulations to Mike on this incredible and well-deserved honor! March 11 is going to be quite the day inside the JMA Dome.
In the meantime, please enjoy some highlights of Mike doing Mike things during his Syracuse days:

Syracuse lacrosse star Brian Megill, a New Jersey native, is always a triple threat for Orange
Noah K. Murray/The Star-Ledger Brian Megill (left) a Clark native and the Big East preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year, leads Syracuse this afternoon in the Big City Classic.
Head. Heart. Hustle.
Three words, stitched onto the equipment bags carried by lacrosse players at Syracuse University, are the battle cry. And to former Arthur L. Johnson High star Brian Megill, they are words to live by.
“When I hear ‘Head, Heart, Hustle,’ I think full 60 minutes of lacrosse,”
Megill said in a phone conversation before a practice last week. “I think about everything on and off the field: in class, academic aspect, my health aspect.”
Megill, voted captain as a junior by teammates last fall, was the Big East’s preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year (along with Notre Dame goalie John Kemp), and is among 64 players on the watch list for the Tewaarton Trophy — the Heisman Trophy of college lacrosse.
Today, Megill leads a young Orange squad onto the turf at MetLife Stadium in the Big City Classic. No. 14 Syracuse (4-3) faces eighth-ranked Duke (8-3) at 4 p.m. in the second of three games; sixth-ranked Notre Dame (6-1) squares off against St. John’s (5-3) at 1 p.m.; and top-ranked Johns Hopkins (8-0) takes on No. 11 North Carolina (7-3) at 6:30 p.m.
Syracuse head coach John Desko, who has won five national titles in just 14 seasons, got all three H’s when Megill committed to the Orange on Christmas Eve of his junior year at Johnson, which is in Clark.
“He’s one of our smartest defenseman, so you’ve got the head part,” Desko said.
“He’s telling others where to go, kind of the quarterback of the defense. He certainly plays with all his heart, he gives it all when he’s out there.”
Megill leads the team with 17 caused turnovers — fifth in Division 1 at 2.43 per game — and is second on the squad with 20 groundballs, all while charged with stopping the top attackmen in the nation.
“He’s progressed. He’s becoming a very good cover defenseman and has done a great job on everyone he’s covered this year,” Desko said.
In early March, Megill limited Virginia’s Steele Stanwick, the 2011 Tewaarton Trophy winner, to one goal, and two weeks later harassed Johns Hopkins top attack, Zach Palmer, into a pair of turnovers with just one garbage-time goal.
Megill first picked up a lacrosse stick in fourth grade, following the lead of his older brother, Ray, who went on to be All-America at Maryland.
The opportunity to play lacrosse at the highest level crystallized midway through high school when the major lacrosse programs began calling.
“I was like, ‘Wow, I could really make a run and get into a good school with my athletic ability,’ ” Megill said. “I just took it and ran with it.”
Tony Calandra, the lacrosse coach at Johnson for 10 seasons and the current head coach at Chatham, started Megill as a freshman and though he gained notoriety for defense, Megill’s stick skills gave Calandra the flexibility to use him all over the field.
Calandra saw Megill’s intensity rise up in games.
“He just had one level, one speed. He played everything like it was full tilt. And that’s why he’s in the position he is right now.”
A focal point for today’s game against Duke will be in the faceoff, where Blue Devils midfielder C.J. Costabile wins 56 percent of the time with his longstick.
“It’s really important for us to get a few of these faceoffs,” Desko said, “so we can get the ball to our offense and keep it away from their offense.”
To shore up a notable weakness for the Orange this season, Desko at times has Megill take faceoffs.
“If he doesn’t get it, he’s great on groundballs, great at checking other players’ sticks to get the ball back down on the ground.”
While Desko is apprehensive about moving his top defender nearly 40 yards from the opponents’ top attack at the faceoff, he trusts Megill to do what it takes to gain possession.
“He hustles all over the place.”
Today’s game is a pivotal for Syracuse. The Orange are coming off their first loss in the Big East, an 11-10 defeat to No. 11 Villanova on March 25.
“The head is there,” Megill said. “We have all the knowledge we need to play, the coaches have given us everything we need to win.
“But we need the heart and the hustle aspect of that ‘Triple-H’ to get us through games and to start playing Syracuse lacrosse.”

- Enter the route, date of travel and number of passengers in the required fields. The system will select options from hundreds of airlines.
- From the list of flights, select the most convenient for you.
- Enter your personal data – they are required to issue tickets. Tutu.ru transmits them only via a secure channel.
- Pay for tickets with a bank card.
What does an e-ticket look like and where can I get it?
After paying on the website, a new entry will appear in the airline’s database – this is your e-ticket. Now all information about the flight will be stored by the carrier airline. Modern air tickets are not issued in paper form. You can see, print and take with you to the airport not the ticket itself, but the itinerary receipt. It contains the e-ticket number and all the information about your flight. Tutu.ru sends an itinerary receipt by e-mail. We recommend to print it and take it with you to the airport. It can come in handy at passport control abroad, although you only need your passport to board the plane.
How to return an e-ticket?
The rules for returning tickets are determined by the airline. Usually, the cheaper the ticket, the less money you can get back. To return the ticket, contact the operator as soon as possible. To do this, you need to answer the letter that you will receive after ordering tickets on the Tutu.ru website. Indicate “Ticket refund” in the subject line of the message and briefly describe your situation. Our specialists will contact you. Predictions for Syracuse vs Utica 15 April 2023

Utica Comets
Good night everyone! Let’s analyze an interesting AHL match, this time Syracuse will host Utica. The starting whistle will sound at 02:00 Moscow time.
Let’s start with the owners. Syracuse hasn’t been doing very well lately. The hosts have only won 2 games in their last 5 meetings. Now occupy the 2nd line of the Northern Division. They played 71 games on the ice and have 80 points. It is worth noting that Syracuse has a very powerful attack.
Let’s take a look at the guests. Utica is just an average team. Comets won 3 out of 5 matches. Played 71 games on the ice and earned 78 points. Now the guests are entrenched in 4th place in the standings. Utica will have a hard time against Syracuse in this matchup.
So, let’s sum up. Syracuse is my favorite in this game.
MY PREDICTION: TB 2.5 SYRACUSA PER 1.4

Utica Comets
Utica have lost 5 in their last 7 matches. The New Jersey Devils farm club is frankly unsuccessful in working with special teams. The Comets are last in powerplay conversions (15.6%) and 7th from the end in shorthanded play (77.6%). However, Utica is still in the playoffs from the Northern Division, taking 4th place. “Syracuse” scores points in 6 of 7 previous meetings. The Tampa Bay Farm Club is showing decent performance. Only one team scored more in the Northern Division. Syracuse’s top scorer, Alex Barre-Boulle (23+58), tried out a few times for the first team at the NHL level and looked great. The last time he left the ice without scoring was March 25. Teams play well with each other. In 6 previous meetings, they sent at least 6 goals to each other’s goal. I suggest betting that 6 goals will be scored in the match.
