We are excited to announce that we are hosting a series of Virtual STEM Camps available starting at $98 per camp.

The COVID-19 response restrictions, our commitment to safety, and guidance from local and state leadership has made it necessary to host camps in a virtual format this summer.

Our Virtual STEM Camps will provide opportunities for students to explore STEM and the engineering design process from home. The curriculum includes some hands-on projects coding with micro:bit and scratch, VEX robotics, fabrication and cybersecurity tools. Camps are offered for elementary (rising 4th grade) to high school (rising seniors) students in daily 1-3 hour online sessions throughout the summer. With fewer contact hours the cost to participants have been reduced compared to in-person camps. We are offering discounts when you register for several sessions and/or multiple siblings in the same registration making them more affordable for the entire family.

Students will learn about coding, the engineering design process and data collection. This hybrid offering puts micro:bit in students hands to use as a tool around the house while telling stories in scratch on  collecting data with a variety of sensors. With three levels of learning in micro:bit and scratch, students will be prepared to create projects and continue to engage in STEM.

Level 1 – Scratch

Participants learn to code using Scratch, an introductory visual programming language. Working through a series of coding activities, students will develop a fluency in the basic techniques of coding. No prior experience required. 5 sessions / 90 minutes each.

Level 1 – Micro:bit

During this camp, students will be introduced to coding through the Micro:bit, a credit-card sized computer. Through exploring the sensors built into the micro:bit, students will create a basic portable personal assistant. Level 2 – Scratch

Participants will advance their coding knowledge using Scratch to create a simple 2D video game. The video game will include navigating a character through a virtual environment with user input such as a keyboard. Participants should have completed Scratch Level 1 or a similar program before taking Scratch Level 2. 5 sessions / 90 minutes each.

Level 2 – Micro:bit

Participants will advance their coding knowledge using the Mirco:bit to create a handheld interactive video game by manipulating the built in features of the Micro:bit. Level 3 – Advanced Scratch

This camp extends the coding techniques learned during level 1 and level 2 SySTEMic camps. Students will create simulations using basic artificial intelligence. Participants must have completed a level 1 or level 2 coding camp or have an equivalent level of skill. 5 sessions / 2 hours each.

The micro:Maqueen is a small mobile robot designed to serve as an introductory platform for competitive robotics. In the VEX IQ Challenge camp, students will learn how to analyze, create an engineering notebook, and code in blocks utilizing a virtual robot and online programming software. In the VEX Robotics Competition Camp students will learn how to approach the yearly challenge through the engineering design process. Students will learn to code in VEX Code text and work on CAD assembly to prototype their robot. These skills will prepare students for yearly competitions.

High school students interested in exploring the Cybersecurity domains and furthering their knowledge of human security, computer hacking, digital safeguarding of applications, and secure communication will find much to learn through this track. Five camps will be offered, providing students the opportunity to select the topic(s) that meet their interests. Each camp will feature activities and labs to engage students, including labs offered by the Virginia Cyber Range.

Common for all cybersecurity camps are a requirement for PC or laptop computer (no tablets or iPads).

Webcam is helpful but not required. Students will need to sign up for a Virginia Cyber Range account prior to camp. A Google, Microsoft, or Facebook account will be needed to authenticate the student account. Information on the sign-up process will be sent closer to the start of camp.

Introduction of Cybersecurity

This camp will introduce students to the foundations of cybersecurity, including but not limited to personal and home security, network security, cyber law, and encryption. Students will be introduced to virtual machines and the Linux command line. Online activities and labs will engage students throughout the week. A Deeper Dive: Hacking & Forensics

This camp will explore penetration testing and digital forensics to conduct examinations of computer systems. A variety of online labs and resources will provide students hands-on experience exploring these important cyber controls to ensure secure environments. Previous experience with cyber concepts and the Linux command line is required.

Students will utilize free software to engage in a variety of camp offerings that allow students to design and make their products utilizing 3D printers, laser engravers and CNC machines in a makerspace. These hybrid camps are intended to engage students in the design process. Students will be mailed a starter kit to create a project of their finished product.

Level 1 camps provide an opportunity for participants to explore a variety of ways of designing and making items and learning about related technology.  These camps provide an introduction and background skills for the more specific Level 2 Fabrication camps. Level 2 camps provide a more immersive exploration of a specific maker process from design to fabrication.  They build upon skills developed in the Level 1 camp and allow the participant to choose an area(s) of interest that was sparked during that previous session.  Completion of a Level 1 camp is required before participating in a Level 2. 

Fabrication Junior camps are for rising 4^th to 7^th grade students while the Fabrication Senior camps are for student in rising 8^th to 12^th grade. Students need a PC or laptop computer (not a phone or tablet) with a webcam and ideally a mouse in order to participate.

The custom maze will be carved on our portable CNC machine and mailed as a kit for final assembly at home.  For 4^th-7^th graders and completion of a Level 1 Fabrication camp prior to this session is required.

It’s summer-camp time … and COVID restrictions mostly still apply

Because the COVID vaccine is only available to kids 12 and older for now, health precautions are still being recommended for younger kids.

Summer camps are now allowed to open free of pandemic restrictions, as long as everyone at camp is vaccinated against COVID-19, under the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But the vaccine is only available to kids 12 and older, so health precautions are still being recommended. Children will need to bring masks and respect social distancing, for example, if attending activities offered by two major camp providers in the D.C. area.

In Prince George’s County, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Parks and Recreation Department requires masks inside all its facilities, as well as outside when social distancing cannot be maintained. Everyone is also asked to practice social distancing whenever possible.

Similar rules are in place in Fairfax County, which is the largest summer camp provider in Northern Virginia with more than 1,000 options. Children who aren’t residents are welcome to enroll with a $15 fee added to the camp price.

The Fairfax County camps follow federal and local COVID-19 safety guidance.

What is being done to keep children safe during COVID?

Our programs follow guidelines developed by the CDC and the local health department in accordance with current governor’s orders. We will continue to monitor and evaluate our procedures to ensure everyone’s health and safety. Policies are subject to change depending on the current safety measures issued by the above references agencies.

Fewer in-person camps than usual are offered this summer through the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission because of COVID-19. They include “public playhouse” days of fun activities as well as “summer STEAM,” a science and mathematical program.

Sport camps offer one- and two-week sessions that introduce children 4 to 17 to golf, tennis, ice hockey, figure skating, football and baseball. Each day is different, and kids might do two sports on the same day. Prices vary depending on what’s offered, and range from $50 to $150. For example, this year the children’s health camp “Rostselmash” in the Digorsky gorge, which did not function last season, will open its doors again. The buildings have already been repaired, water has been supplied to each one, the windows are glazed, the walls are whitewashed and painted, a fence has been installed between the base and the river for anti-terrorist security purposes, fire alarms, video surveillance, lighting throughout the territory have been restored.

In the Dzinaga camp, rooms in five buildings are sheathed with fire-resistant plasterboard, plastered and whitewashed.The electrical wiring was completely replaced in accordance with safety requirements, 12 video cameras were equipped, washing machines were purchased and installed in the newly built laundry room, and a new refrigerator, ovens, and a hot water boiler were installed in the dining room.

The meeting also discussed the issue of the work of the children’s camp “Metallurg”, which was previously on the balance sheet of the plant “Electrozinc”. The camp has recently become part of the Volunteer of the Caucasus Volunteer Resource Center. In order for him to accept children this summer, it is necessary to include him in the register of children’s recreation organizations.And this will be done by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania in the coming days. According to the new director of Yuri Koniev , 180 children will be able to rest in one stream in the health resort this summer.

Along with the positive changes in children’s health resorts, unresolved problems remain. For example, no institution has yet prepared anti-terrorist safety data sheets and Rospotrebnadzor conclusions. The camp leaders also asked for assistance in recruiting medical personnel.Irina Azimova gave instructions to the relevant departments.
