A mission essential program, the School Age Care program at Naval Station Norfolk offers a full range of services. During the school year, before and after care is available for children with transportation provided to area elementary and middle schools. All day care services are provided for school holiday weeks and school in-service days for enrolled members. During the summer months, fully developed recreation camps are offered to accommodate children while school is out. Field trips and special events are offered and free to all participants. Youth Summer Camps

Naval Station Norfolk offers a fully developed recreation summer camp to accommodate eligible family members during summer break, mid June to late August. Summer camps are open to eligible family members six to 12 years of age and five-year-olds that have graduated kindergarten and are going to the first grade.  Camps offer a variety of age appropriate activities that enhance cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. Activities include Boy’s and Girl’s Club programming, 4-H programming, swimming, bowling, golf, field trips and much more. As summer break approaches spaces will fill up quickly, so don’t wait to register!

Youth Sports

The youth sports program teaches the value of exercise, healthy living, competition, team building and group dynamics; signing up for youth sports is a great way to get your child involved. Enrollment is open and on-going throughout this summer for the 2021 Day Camps and (NEW!) Adventure Camps! Enrollment paperwork, Parent Handbook, and Flyer is on the left side of this page, or available for pick-up at the YMCA. One per child is required. Once paperwork is turned in to the YMCA, you can register online or in-house for Day Camp, Adventure Camp, and After Care. Please read over the Parent Handbook for very helpful information!

Day Camp Enrollment Paperwork is due by Sunday, May 16th, 2021 to guarantee your child’s t-shirt size! (Enrollment is on-going throught the summer! Please turn in forms by the camp week deadline.)

Space will be limited each week, so register early to guarantee your child’s spot! All fees must be paid for by the Wednesday prior (COB in-house/midnight online) to the week of camp, or a $10 late fee will be charged (1 late fee per family). Each child receives one (1) T-Shirt for Day Camp and one (1) T-shirt for Adventure Camp.

Day Camp 2021

The YMCA Day Camp is for children entering K – 6th grades in Fall 2021. Day Camp provides an incredibly adventurous summer full of games, arts and crafts, swimming, weekly field trips, and fun! This program will include activities that will challenge your child to develop physically, mentally, and socially. Youth are placed into two age appropriate groups for daily activities (9 am – 3 pm) as follows: Entering Grades K-1st, & Grades 2nd-6th. Some field trips will be attended together. Most will be taken on Thursdays.

Dates: May 24th – August 6th, 2021 (11 individual weeks)

Times: 6:00 am – 3:30 pm (After Care 3:30-6:00 pm, see below for more details)

Main programming is between 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.  All children should plan to attend during these hours, Monday – Friday.

Fees: Member: $110/week (*Week #2-$88)

The great thing about Day Camp is that you can register for the weeks that you need/want, so come one week or up to all 11 weeks!  We see new faces each week, so making new friendships lasts all summer long. 

Weekly Themes & Field Trips

Adventure Camp (NEW for 2021!)

We’ve merged the favorites of our previous River Camp and Outdoor Camp, and created the best of the best – our NEW Adventure Camp! (Unfortunately, the Kiwanis Camp that we used for River Camp may still not be accessible due to prior flooding.)

This camp is open to boys and girls, ages 7 to 13 only.  Each week will be different, so we hope you join us for both weeks!

Each day is a new adventure, as we’ll visit a new park each day. In addition to our theme-based activities, each week we’ll fish at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park, visit the Norfolk Archery Club, build bird feeders, play on Embrace Park’s Splash Pad, daily games & activities at the Y’s indoor field turf or gyms, and swim each afternoon. The fun continues Friday with Laser Tag, a Hot Dog Roast, an Ice Cream Social for parents & family to attend, and on overnight stay at the YMCA!

2021 Dates

*July 5th deadline is to guarantee your child’s shirt size! We have to place 1 shirt order for kids who attend either camp, so please submit enrollment paperwork by July 5th.

Times: 8:30 am – 3:30 pm (Bus leaves at 8:30 am)

– Drop-off at 8:15 am, or as early as 6:00 am at no extra cost.

– Pick-up at 3:30 pm, After Care is optional from 3:30-6:00 pm for $6/$10 per day.

After Care 

After Care is optional after each camp, from 3:30 – 6:00 pm, Monday – Friday.  Youth can participate in Day Camp or Adventure Camp and remain with the staff until 6:00 pm. We start by having a snack and free time. Then, the Day Camp staff provide more structured games and activities on the indoor field turf and gyms, and outdoor playtime. For Day Camp, plan to pick up between 3:00-3:30 pm daily, if you won’t be using After Care. Weekly registration for both the camp week and After Care is due by the Wednesday prior for the upcoming week.

4-H Summer Camp | 4-H Camps & Youth Programs | Airfield Conference Center and Southeast Virginia 4-H Educational Center

The Airfield 4-H Educational Center Junior Summer Camps provide youth between the ages of 9 and 13 with programming designed to learn through experiential education and character development.

4-H camping is cooperative group living in a natural environment which focuses on the individual’s social, spiritual, mental, and physical development for both boys and girls. Since 4-H camping is educationally focused, it is recognized as a method by which to deliver 4-H programming. These camps involve trained professional staff, as well as highly skilled adult and teen volunteers in working with and supervising all campers.

Teen Leaders, Adult Volunteers and 4-H Center Camp Staff all work together to supervise campers. Teen and adult volunteers are recruited, screened, and trained in their home counties with training support provided by the 4-H Center. Caring, trained 4-H Summer Staff from diverse backgrounds help campers develop a sense of acceptance, self-worth, and security through group living and activities. All 4-H Center Camp Staff participate in more than two (2) weeks of mandatory, intensive staff training prior to the start of camp to ensure your child is offered the safest & enjoyable time. The 4-H Center’s supervision policy includes a minimum of a 1:8 staff to camper supervision ratio. In addition, each week of 4-H Camp features two (2) highly trained, experienced, and professional Camp Directors including your local 4-H Extension Agent (or trained designee) as well as the 4-H Center Program Director.

We are excited to announce our Summer Camp Programs! We know your youth are eager to connect with other youth and actively engage their minds this summer – all while having fun! To help you with this, we teamed up with Black Rocket to provide a series of opportunities for your kids to explore their computer science curiosity this summer.

The magic in every student comes to life as never before when they are empowered to be as creative as they were all born to be!  Black Rocket has twenty years of experience designing courses in the S.T.E.A.M fields.  Every program is powered by the child’s innate imagination and designed to bring their ideas to life in a fun, hands-on learning environment. All Black Rocket programs mirror real-life experiences and the collaborative nature of the design process.

All classes are Monday through Friday, one-week online programs with morning and afternoon options starting June 7 through August 23. Immersive activities are guided by live, online instructors in a moderated virtual room where students can engage with the instructor and interact with other participants.

Nike Volleyball Camp at Norfolk State University

Kathy Bullock is the Head Volleyball Coach at Norfolk State University.

Kathy Bullock heads into her second season leading the Norfolk State volleyball program as head coach in 2020 and her 27^th overall season as a head coach at the collegiate level. She arrived at NSU prior to the 2019 season with more than 20 years of head coaching experience at a pair of Division I HBCUs.

Before coming to NSU, Bullock spent the 2018 campaign at Winston-Salem State and the 2017 season at Greensboro College. She also led turnarounds as the head coach at Tennessee State for 13 seasons from 2004-16 and at her alma mater North Carolina A&T from 1994-2003.

WSSU went 16-15 overall and 14-4 in the CIAA during her one season there, advancing to the semifinals of the CIAA Championship. She coached a pair of All-CIAA performers. Bullock led Greensboro College to a 14-14 record during her one season there in 2017, coaching one USA South Athletic Conference All-East Division honoree.

Bullock is the all-time winningest coach at Tennessee State with 177 victories. She led the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. TSU captured its first-ever Ohio Valley Conference championship in 2007 after also leading the Tigers to the OVC regular season championship in 2005. She was named the OVC Coach of the Year in ‘05 after setting program records for most overall (22-11) and league wins (14-2).

Tennessee State finished with three 20-win seasons and seven overall winning seasons – the only seven in program history – during her time with the Tigers. Her second season with the program, when the Tigers went 22-11, marked a 17-win improvement from her first season. That stood as the largest turnaround in NCAA Division I that season. She also won 20 games in 2006 and ’07.

In addition to capturing the league title in 2007, she also led TSU to the semifinals of the OVC tournament five other times. Bullock coached 19 All-OVC selections, seven All-Newcomer honorees, and the first OVC Player of the Year (Shaquita Williams in 2011) and OVC Defensive Player of the Year (Madison Halterman in 2016) in program history. She went 177-222 during her time at Tennessee State.

Her overall record in 26 seasons stands at 371-449, including 162 wins in 10 seasons at North Carolina A&T.

Prior to leading the Tigers, she spent 10 seasons as the head coach at N.C. A&T from 1994-2003, compiling a 162-175 record. She coached seven first-team All-MEAC performers and the 1998 Player of the Year, Vania Blake. She led the Aggies to five winning seasons, including a school-record 24 wins in 2001 and 20 wins in 2002.

A&T captured MEAC Southern Division titles in 1995 (8-1) and 1998 (8-0), the only ones in program history, and the ’98 squad also advanced to the MEAC Championship match for the third time ever. Blake was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer despite the Aggies falling to Morgan State in the championship game.

The Aggies finished second in the division in her eight other seasons to MEAC perennial power Florida A&M. Prior to her arrival, A&T had never finished better than third.

As a player at North Carolina A&T, she was a four-time All-MEAC first-team selection, the first player in conference history to accomplish the feat. Bullock was also an All-American in track in the 800 meters during the 1984-85 season. She is a member of the Durham Striders Track Club Hall of Fame.

Bullock’s sister, Kim Graham-Miller, earned a gold medal in the 4×400 relay for Team USA at the 1996 Olympic Games. Her brother, Jay Graham, played in the NFL for five years.

A native of Durham, North Carolina, Bullock is a 1987 graduate of North Carolina A&T where she earned a bachelors degree in communications. She and her husband Darryl have one daughter, Kayla, and one stepson, Luther.

Doolittle Raid: the beginning of a new era in military affairs

Bomber Mitchell B-25 made famous with the Doolittle Raid

The Doolittle Raid, also known as the Tokyo Raid, is 75 years old, the first airstrike against Japan in World War II.

On April 18, 1942, 16 American Mitchell bombers, having taken off from the Hornet aircraft carrier, flew over a thousand kilometers and bombed Tokyo, Kobe, Yokohama and Nagoya.

Considering the incredible technical complexity and unprecedented nature of the operation at that time, it went brilliantly.

Its participants did not think that they were opening a new era in military affairs, but it turned out that way.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the first time in history that carrier-based aircraft defeated the enemy.The United States took advantage of the enemy’s experience within four months.

Difficult task

On September 5, 1941, reporting on the preparations for the attack on Pearl Harbor, Chief of the Japanese General Staff Hajime Sugiyama assured the emperor that retaliatory air strikes on Japanese territory were impossible for the Americans.

Immediately after the disaster in Hawaii, Franklin Roosevelt instructed the military to think about options for a retaliation operation.

The problem looked unsolvable.

Airfields from which it was possible to reach the Japanese metropolis, the United States did not have at that time.

The then aircraft carriers were not intended for land bombing, but for fighting other ships. The aircraft based on them had a short range, and it was impossible to approach close to the coast because of the danger of a collision with the enemy fleet.

Commodore Lowe’s insight

The idea of ​​piling up – you can’t say otherwise! – An army bomber on an aircraft carrier came to the mind of Commodore Francis Lowe from the headquarters of the US Navy.

The exact date is known from Lowe’s memoirs: Saturday, January 10, 1942.

Departing from the naval base in Norfolk, the Commodore saw from the air a bombing range and an outline of an aircraft carrier drawn on the ground, on which pilots were training to strike. It was then that it dawned on him.

Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Ernst King, approved the plan and entrusted the study of technical details to Commodore Donald Duncan, who was in charge of the naval headquarters for aviation operations and was himself an experienced pilot.

Duncan locked himself in his office and worked without stopping for five days.The result was a 30-page report to Admiral King, handwritten by the Commodore – such was the degree of secrecy.

On parole and on one wing

Of the three types of medium bomber with the required range and payload characteristics, Duncan chose the B-25B “Mitchell”, which had a smaller takeoff and wingspan.

On the deck of the aircraft carrier “to the eyeballs” could accommodate 16 of these machines.

Calculations have shown that the Mitchells will have to be lightened as much as possible and at the same time take an additional supply of fuel, clogging all the aisles with cans of gasoline.Any stray bullet would immediately turn the car into a torch, especially since it was necessary to operate over Japan without fighter cover.

Even so, there was not enough fuel to return to the aircraft carrier. They were to fly to China and land at an airfield near the city of Quzhou, in the territory controlled by Chiang Kai-shek.

The Hornet was chosen to take part in the operation – the newest aircraft carrier, which was transferred to the US Pacific Fleet only in January 1942. Raid was to be his first combat mission.

The aircraft carrier with escort ships had to swiftly sneak up to the target at a distance of 400 miles (about 580 km), release the aircraft and immediately return to avoid collision with the superior forces of the Japanese fleet.

Training

Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, a famous ace, holder of a number of aviation records, was appointed to command the squadron.

On 31 January, the Air Force Chief of Intelligence (future Commander of Strategic Aviation), Brigadier General Karl Spaats, handed Dolittle a list of targets.

On February 2, a test takeoff of the Mitchell was carried out from the deck of the Hornet aircraft carrier.

The aircraft were taken from the 17th Bomber Air Group, based in South Carolina and engaged in the fight against German submarines in the western Atlantic.

A technical redesign was carried out at a plant in Minnesota.

The crew of each Mitchell consisted of five people.On February 9, the Air Force announced the recruitment of volunteers for an “extremely dangerous mission.” By February 17, 80 participants had been selected. On March 1, they began hammering and training at Eglin Field in Florida.

Adverse encounter

The hike began on April 2.

At first everything went like clockwork. But at 07:38 on April 18, when the Hornet was 650 miles from Honshu Island and 250 miles from the planned departure point of the aircraft, it was discovered by two Japanese patrol vessels.

The cruiser Nashville escorting the aircraft carrier sank them, but the Americans learned from the Japanese sailors caught from the water that they had managed to report the squadron by radio.

Fearing that the enemy would raise aircraft and send ships to intercept, the squadron commander, Vice Admiral William Halsey, ordered to immediately prepare for the launch.

One Mitchell was planned as a backup, but at the last minute Dolittle decided to use that as well. In a hurry, additional cans of fuel were not loaded on board, which soon played an important role in the fate of Captain Edward York’s crew.

Bombed without loss

Doolittle started first. It was 08:17 on April 18, 1942. Four months and 11 days after Pearl Harbor

The sixteenth plane took off at 9:20 am, 600 miles from Japan.

Ten bombers attacked targets in Tokyo, three in Yokohama, and the rest in Nagoya, Kobe and Osaka.

Each vehicle carried two 227 kg high-explosive bombs and two cluster incendiary bombs. The five bombs were attached to the Japanese Friendship medals, presented to American officers by the Japanese delegation before the war.

At the suggestion of Commodore Duncan, they decided to bomb from extremely low altitudes in order to increase accuracy and confuse the Japanese air defense. Special sights were installed on the planes.

First hit the center of Tokyo Doolittle at 12:15. His bombardier Sergeant Fred Bremer dropped all four bombs on a weapons factory on General Spaats’ list. A large fire broke out, which served as a reference point for the following crews.

At 12:35 the Japanese announced an air raid alert. But, despite anti-aircraft fire and fighter attacks, not a single vehicle was shot down or seriously damaged.

The squadron hit 13 targets – metallurgical, engineering and chemical enterprises, a shipyard, two power plants, fuel depots and a light aircraft carrier located in the port of Yokohama.

Only one “Mitchell”, being attacked by nine fighters, dropped bombs anywhere.

According to Japanese data, 50 people were killed and 400 were injured on the ground.

The Japanese lost two fighters in air battles.

Didn’t make it

The main misadventures awaited the pilots, when it seemed that everything was over.

“Since childhood I dreamed of becoming a professional hockey player”

– Brandon, there are not many interviews with you on the Internet, so first, tell us a little about yourself, along with how you became a professional hockey player?

– I was born and raised in the small town of Maple Ridge near Vancouver.My parents are both Chinese, but were born and raised in Canada, my father’s mother is pure Irish, born and raised in Ireland. The rest of the grandparents were also born and raised in Canada, but now their parents are in China.

Since childhood, he dreamed of becoming a professional hockey player. I played for the local children’s team or just with neighbors in the yard when I had free time. – What is your most vivid impression of your NHL experience?

– Definitely the first match. My parents and a lot of friends were able to come to my debut NHL game in Denver. Playing a debut match on home ice, winning with a confident score, feeling that one of the main wishes of childhood is coming true, and seeing the reaction of loved ones is one of the best feelings in a professional career.Naturally, the first puck, you also always wait for this moment, turning in your head until you score. And, of course, the playoffs are just an incomparable experience.

It seems to me that it is very difficult to lead a team and fight for something when there is no depth of the squad, and the hospital is packed. But, unfortunately, this happens in hockey, and when a team has a number of defeats, the management takes certain measures.

– Was it hard to decide on a career change and leave North America for Europe ten years later?

– Yes, because when you are younger, you think that you will play in the NHL all your life.This season I had a bilateral contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, but due to a series of injuries, I did not play at the proper level either in the main team or in the AHL. And the competition here is high, young hockey players constantly come, who also strive to be at the base and fight for a place in the sun. Nevertheless, I’m happy that I played so many matches in the league, but I had to move on.

As a result, I was invited to the German team “Adler Mannheim” by the coach Jeff Ward , who had previously worked at “Boston” and knew me.I am more than satisfied with my first experience in Europe, we became champions.

– Not only did you play in Europe for the first time, but also lived, did any unusual situations happen?

– It was like that … The first week in Germany cost me a lot. The club issued the car, but I did not know that speeding or driving at a red traffic light is very strictly recorded there. In North America, this can most often be recorded by the traffic police, in Germany there were instruments, and I got a decent bill.

“Before moving to” Kunlun “I have never been to China”

– Kunlun Red Star has been in existence for three seasons, you have only been with the team for the second year, have you tried to go to you before?

– Yes, they contacted me before, when they formed the team before the first season in the KHL. But I didn’t have a very good agent then, and due to some financial issues and documents, I could not play for Kunlun that season. After that, he stopped cooperation, and now he is his own agent.I could have started playing in the KHL a season earlier, this is the strongest league in Europe, there are many talented hockey players and I am glad that I am finally playing here.

– What about hockey?

Although I remember last season, when I played the first matches for Kunlun, some fans left after the first period, thinking that the game was over.

– Are you planning to play for the Chinese national team?

– Definitely, now the issues of obtaining citizenship, a passport are being resolved, it is not easy to obtain Chinese citizenship.
