Summer Camps | Indian Youth of America
The Youth Camp Program gave birth to Indian Youth of America (IYA) and remains the heartbeat of our organization. Established in 1976 on the Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon, the Youth Camp Program is celebrating its 44th Anniversary in 2021.
Each summer Indian youth, staff and special guests come together to participate in Indian Youth of America’s summer camps in Arizona and South Dakota. The young Indian campers experience a variety of cultural, educational and recreational activities under the guidance of Indian counselors and staff. The campers also learn from special guests who come to camp to share their songs, dances, stories and cultural traditions.
In addition to special quest performances, the campers take part in morning stretching exercises, volleyball, mushball, basketball and stickball tournaments, paddle boating and canoeing, swimming and hiking, archery, arts and crafts, sessions on living healthy lifestyles and nutrition, building leadership and teamwork skills, happy & healthy physical activities, American Indian contributions and cultural traditions, creative writing, bullying prevention, self-image development, storytelling, traditional games, hoop dancing, flute, basket & drum making, bear fetish workshop, a watermelon hunt and campfire skit, and field trips to Slide Rock, Goldwater Lake, Black Elk Peak, Crazy Horse Memorial and Wind Cave. On the last night of camp a special awards campfire is held to recognize campers and staff who performed especially well at camp. As a special reminder of their camp experience the campers and staff watch a slide presentation developed from pictures taken during camp and are given an IYA t-shirt and camp group picture to take home. As each camper, staff person and special guest make their journey home they take with them numerous experiences and priceless memories they shared during their time together at camp.
Over the past 43 years, IYA’s summer camps have provided thousands of Indian children between the ages of 10-14 with an alternative to spending the summer at home….often with no entertainment, recreation or job opportunities. The summer camps have provided a variety of positive activities at a time when youth lack supervision and are most vulnerable to peer pressure, criminal activity, suicide, gang involvement and substance abuse. Since its inception in 1976, the Youth Camp Program has provided children from 204 tribes and 34 states with the opportunity to receive positive guidance and mentoring from Indian staff, share tribal traditions and develop friendships that last a lifetime.
Keeping Kids Active: Summer Camp Fun Across Indian Country
At Running Strong for American Indian Youth® we realize the critical need for children to have the experience fun during the summer when school is out!
Two camps among those supported by Running Strong which do just that across Indian County are Today We Follow – Tomorrow We Lead (TWF-TWL) on the Navajo Reservation, and Indian Youth of America (IYA) which operates camps in the Prescott National Forest in Arizona and the Black Hills of South Dakota.
These programs provide the opportunity for children to both have fun and make new friends, and learn more about their tribal heritage, customs and traditions.
At the TWF-TWL camp, following a prayer service and raising of the flags ceremony on a Saturday morning, tipis are put up for prayer services held in the evening.
The day is filled with plenty of things for the kids and families to do – hikes through the scenic countryside, fun runs and horseback and bicycle rides. The day also includes a field day featuring inspirational speakers before the evening prayers.
On Sundays, the children all receive backpacks filled with all the school supplies they will need for a successful school year provided by Running Strong.
As Anita Begay, president of TWF-TWL and camp organizer, explains, “The summer youth camp that we have every year lets the children have fun, be themselves, make new friends and learn about their culture and traditional backgrounds,” she says. “With guest speakers talking education and the positive side of having an education, the children will have a positive outlook on their education.”
Patricia Gordon, founder and executive director of the IYA, told us the hard, sad truth that “For many children, the prospect of going to camp is out of reach because of the high cost.”
However, thanks to the supporters of Running Strong and our longstanding partnership with IYA, those camps become affordable to Native families through scholarships allowing them to attend.
“IYA’s summer camps provide children with an alternative to spending the summer at home…often with no entertainment, recreation or job opportunities,” she said. “The summer camps provide a variety of positive activities at a time when youth lack supervision and are most vulnerable to peer pressure, suicide, criminal activity, gang involvement and substance abuse.
“The campers are provided with the opportunity to receive positive guidance and mentoring from an all-Indian staff and learn from special guests who come to the camp to share their songs, dances, stories, games and cultural traditions,” she added.
The camps offered by IYA further its mission to provide opportunities and experiences that will aid Native youth in their educational, cultural, career and personal growth while fostering a positive sense of self and heritage.
IYA adheres to the philosophy that every child is entitled to opportunities and experiences that will enable them to establish a self-supporting life while always remembering that their background will be their strength and pride, which is expressed through the organization’s axiom:
“They are young once but Indian forever.”
Over the past 40 years, IYA camps have served Native children from 198 tribes and 34 states and relies on the funding it gets from Running Strong to help ensure it can continue to provide scholarships to as many youth as possible each summer.

There’s No Place like Indian Summer Camp! – DanceBlue
Many of the patients and families served by DanceBlue look forward to summer. Not only because of the sunshine, but also because of Kid Cancer Alliance’s Indian Summer Camp program. Indian Summer Oncology Camp is a weeklong camp that allows kids with cancer to build friendships and focus on just being a kid, rather than a patient. The camp started in 1981 by a dedicated group of volunteers and has since provided thousands of amazing and brave kids with their favorite week of the year.
A typical day at Indian Summer Camp starts with the “Polar Bear Swim”, which is a quick dip in the pool to start the morning off. Next, the campers sing songs, eat breakfast, and listen to the morning announcements. The rest of the morning is Cabin and Camper Choice, which includes activities like archery, kayaking, fishing, and hiking. The campers then eat lunch and alternate between swim time and arts and crafts. To finish the day, the campers eat dinner and then go to a special activity like a campfire, talent show, or the annual camp dance. Each week also includes a field trip day. In addition, nurses, trained volunteers, and a staff doctor are all on hand to make sure that the campers stay safe during the week. As can be seen, Indian Summer Camp is like any other typical summer camp but with campers that have incredible stories to tell and amazing friendships that are built from shared experiences.
Although DanceBlue and Kids Cancer Alliance are two separate organizations, they serve many of the same children and have the same goal of loving kids and their families during what may be their greatest time of need. They both bring joy to kids who deserve a regular childhood, and they both bring comfort to the families who need it. As a result, many of the volunteers at the camp are DanceBlue students who want to continue serving the kids all year. “Indian Summer Camp would not be possible without the dedicated volunteers that staff our weeklong camps. We love the energy and excitement that DanceBlue students bring to our camps!” said Shelby Russell, Executive Director of Kids Cancer Alliance and Family Relations Chair of the very first DanceBlue in 2006.
The DanceBlue students would argue that they get way more out of serving at the camp than they give to it. Brothers Grant and Jake Puckett are both DanceBlue Committee members as well as volunteers at Indian Summer Camp. DanceBlue alumnus Grant Puckett said, “While a part of DanceBlue, I was given the wonderful opportunity to serve the kids and their families by raising money, boosting morale, and traveling to Mini Marathons all over the state. All of that was remarkable and very rewarding, but I never had the chance to directly serve these kids until I got to Indian Summer. There, I got to know them. I learned their stories. We, at PRIA WARRICK FINISHING SCHOOL, combine fun with learning, a combination rare to find. Starting with the first week of May, a Summer Camp was conducted at the academy for kids and students of various age groups being 4-10 years, 11-15 years and 16+ (early 20s). The summer camp was organized during the month of May and June. It was concluded with a Grand Finale during the month of July.

The classes inculcated fun activities adhering the active participation of students wherein they indulged in role plays, group discussions, team building activities, action researching and role modeling for learning. All age groups were given chances to indulge with other age groups to make them comfortable with various social situations and social groups. Each day, the sessions were accompanied by practical dinning etiquette sessions, wherein students were made familiar with concepts like eating with fork and knife, table manners, dealing with difficult food and eating international cuisines effectively.
“We always try to describe our Summer Camps like making a movie, where you spend a few hours every day with a new group of people whom you love working and learning with, and then never see again”. Therefore at PRIA WARRICK FINISHING SCHOOL, we incorporated a THEATRE LEARNING method in our Summer Camps, where individuals were given a chance to learn through movies, documentaries and short clips, with a focus on behavioral training. A Self-Introspective approach towards altering behaviors was used.
Pria Warrick Finishing Academy believes that practical experiences are certainly more retainable. Hence, the kids were exposed to the High Society, and were provided with the opportunity at the Hilton Hotel to showcase the Etiquette they had ingrained at the Academy. It wasn’t just learning, but learning with fun where in they also went swimming, followed by lunch.
All in all, the programme was a big hit amongst students and it came in with a lot of appreciations from the parents with satisfying results.

How does Dubravushka differ from others? First of all, the atmosphere.It’s so good here that the guys want to come back again and again. The first words of my daughter when I picked her up last year: “Mom, next year I will go here for 4 shifts in a row!” And that says a lot! Children are busy from morning to evening, there is no time for tablets, smartphones and other gadgets. They communicate in reality, not virtually (which has become so customary these days). The offered classes are interesting and varied. Shift themes are not repeated.
What is important for me as a mother, I can see what the guys are doing every day.Photos are published, even live broadcasts are held. After the trip, my daughter began to speak English much more freely, the internal clamp was gone.
Friends appeared, they corresponded, they were waiting for a meeting next year.
Therefore, this summer we were not even faced with the question of where to go. Definitely in “Dubravushka”! I went not only myself, but also brought the girls. They also liked it very much.
Now life in the camp is in full swing. Barely cut out 5 minutes to call mom. In these 5 minutes, a waterfall of news and emotions.Unfortunately, this was not the case in our childhood.

According to preliminary data, food poisoning was diagnosed in the pupils of the Svyazist health camp.In an interview with 78.ru, the mother of one of the vacationers said that at first more than 20 children complained of nausea, vomiting and high temperature. This became known on August 9, 2 weeks after their departure from the camp. In total, 90 children aged 10 to 14 were poisoned.
“The parents decided to pick up the children earlier from the camp, although they were supposed to stay there for another week,” Svetlana says.
Outraged parents sent a complaint to the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor, whose employees are already clarifying the circumstances of the incident.
Svetlana also emphasized that she managed to get a ticket to the DOL thanks to benefits: half of the cost was paid from the city budget, and the second part was paid by the administration of the Vasileostrovsky district. By mid-July, the St. Petersburg authorities had accepted about 50 thousand applications for children’s cashback in health camps. More than 13.4 thousand citizens received vouchers for children absolutely free.
Similar incidents occurred with vacationers from other regions of the Northwestern Federal District. In early August, 10 children with signs of food consignment were removed from the Murmansk-Adler train. A criminal case was initiated into the incident. In total, 90 young residents of Murmansk and Karelia were injured as a result of the incident.

A summer camp called “Theatrical Vacations” has finished in Maryland, USA, according to the website of the Russkiy Mir Foundation.
