Nintendo has been trying to make exercise fun since the days of Wii Sports and Wii Fit, and its latest attempt may be the weirdest one yet. Ring Fit Adventure is a generic-looking adventure game played with a motion-sensing resistance ring and a controller strapped to your leg.
The game itself looks pretty basic. Players move through 20 different worlds to hunt down an evil dragon, fighting enemies in turn-based battles and leveling up their character. Yawn.
But it’s the “how” that makes it interesting. Players strap one of the Joy-Con controllers to their thigh, and slide the other into the kind of resistance ring often used in yoga and pilates. Then, to move through the game world players jog on the spot, and use the ring to attack and perform other movements.
Attacks are made using “Fit Skills,” including things like squats, knee-to-chests, thigh presses, ab presses, and bow pulls. These skills are divided into four groups that target different muscles – arms, core, legs and yoga poses, and in each case players get the chance to pick a particular exercise. Defending against enemy attacks is done by pressing and holding the ring against your abs.
Because correct posture is important for these kinds of exercises, players deal more damage and earn more experience points for performing the actions more precisely. This unlocks more Fit Skills.
Besides the main adventure mode, mini-games can be played separately to chase high scores or do specific workouts. That includes squeezing the ring to break boxes, performing squats to shape pottery, doing overhead presses to guide a hang glider, or doing the mountain climbers exercise to … well, climb a mountain.
The game difficulty can be tailored to match the starting fitness levels of individual players, and let them scale up the challenge as they get better.
Of all of Nintendo’s past attempts at combining video games and fitness, Ring Fit Adventure looks like the most fun and probably one of the closest to an actual workout. Wii Sports only took marginally more energy than sitting on the couch, and the Wii Fit Balance Board didn’t really add much outside of yoga poses. The addition of the resistance ring should actually exercise players’ arms, and the adventure game skin, while generic, looks entertaining enough to hook people into sticking to a daily routine.
Ring Fit Adventure is due to launch on October 18 for the Nintendo Switch. The pack includes the game, the ring and the leg strap for US$79.99. Check it out in action in the (extremely cheesy) video below.

Shinra’s Squat Championship is one of the physical tests in the game that can be won by performing Squats in the Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion. After completing the Squat championship you will be able to get the Bronze Trophy for it and then ultimately get the Flower Wagon Trophy in chapter 8 since the rewards of the mini-game are one of the items to make the flower wagon.

The mini-game can be played in the Shinra Building in the training room and you will need to talk to the researcher in order to access it. It is important to defeat Bahamut Fury before the mini-game. There are four different opponents that you will be facing so be prepared for each of them.
Unlocking Quad Of Steel Mini Game
The Quad Of Steel mini-game will become available to players when they complete Chapter 5 of Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion. All you need to do is talk to the researcher found on the Soldier Floor of the Shinra building in order to gain access to the mini-game.
After you go into the training room and talk to the researcher about the physical fitness test, you need to select the option Let Me In It in order to start the mini-game. The rules of the game are simple, you just need to defeat all four opponents in an individual match with each, and perform the most squats to win the game.
It is important to clear all the side quests and mini-games in chapter 5 before you leave for Nibelheim in Chapter 9. The reason for this is that once you leave, you will not be able to return to the Shinra building after departing from Midgar in Crisis Core.
If you don’t want to be one of the players that end up losing a lot of rewards by missing out on mini-games, then it is important that you clear every single minigame and sidequest before you leave Midgar. Furthermore, there are a lot of rewards on the farm from the mini-game that is required to gain another Trophy and complete a quest called the Flower Wagon Quest in Crisis Core.
Therefore, the Quad Of Steel mini-game is important if you want to unlock two trophies in the game called Shinra Squats Champion which is a bronze trophy, and Midgar Full Of Flowers which is a silver trophy in the game.
Mechanics Of The Game
The timing of the squat matters a lot here, and depending upon the platform you are playing the game on, the button to perform a Squat is different.
Here are different buttons you will need to press on different platforms to perform a Squat.
- If you are playing on the switch, press X
- For Xbox users, you need to press Y to perform a Squat.
- For PS5 or PS4, pressing the triangle button will perform a Squat.
- For PSP, the cross button will allow you to perform a Squat in the Mini game.
With each opponent, the Squats will get faster and harder to perform. You need to get the timing just right and outperform your opponent in order to win the game.
If you are playing on modern platforms like PS5 or Xbox, then your controller will vibrate when you perform a Squat correctly and the timing is perfect. If you are playing Crisis Core on PSP, then you won’t get this option however, vibrations are not at all necessary for this mini-game to time your squats right.
You need to press the button only when Zack’s arms are stretched far behind him and he is about to hit the bottom. If you press multiple times, then it will just reset the Squat and you won’t get any points. If you miss then it will also reset the squat and Zack will get slower each time.
This will really affect the number of Squats that you can perform in each time frame. Therefore, it is important to make fewer mistakes to perform more Squats against your enemy. It is also important to focus on the camera angle when performing a Squat. Below you will see all the opponents that you will be facing in this mini-game and how to counter each one effectively.
First Match
In your first match, you will be up against a Trooper. The first match is fairly easy to win and you only need to land a few Squats in order to win the game. Still, you need to land successful Squats in order to perform the required amount of Squats in the given time frame otherwise you will lose in the first match of the game.

The first match is also a good way to practice for your upcoming matches, which will be fairly harder. So when you first join the match and perform Squats you are bound to land a few wrong ones before perfecting it. So you don’t need to worry in case you are losing.
Take this as practice, and keep on performing Squats until you get the hang of it. After a lot of trial and error and lagging behind the opponent, you will be able to get used to the mechanism and be able to land the Squats perfectly. Since you will be up against a trooper, he will make a lot of mistakes as well.
Strategy
On average, he will perform a wrong squat after every 3 or 4 squats. This will be your opportunity to leave the opponent behind by performing them in the right time frame. Even if you land a few wrong ones you will be able to catch up to him quite easily and beat him in the competition. The control of the racket in the prototype game is carried out by continuously measuring the angle in the knee joint of the squatting athlete. The measured angle value is used in an application to position the racket on the screen in a computer game such as ping pong or tennis.
An angle measurement prototype uses a gyroscope in an inexpensive smartphone placed in an athlete’s shorts pocket. A simple application on this smartphone reads the gyroscope readings and transmits them via Wi-Fi over a local network or via the Internet to a tablet, second phone, TV or computer with a game like ping-pong or tennis. In the prototype, the athlete plays by performing squats of different depths against artificial intelligence, although a network game against another athlete is also possible.
It is possible to take into account physical activity and progress in training by recalculating (integrating) the schedule into the equivalent number of floors climbed up the stairs and counting the number of successful hits on the ball.
Technical implementation details of the game prototypes
Game Maker, Unity, Delphi and JavaScript were tested using UDP/TCP/IP and WebSocket to program the desktop, mobile and browser versions of the prototypes. Computer vision was not used in this prototype because at the stage of practical testing, the author found it inconvenient to have a stable stationary placement of a smartphone at a noticeable distance from the body (necessary for camera pose detection). But in the scheme with a gyroscope in a trouser pocket and holding a smartphone in a hand in front of the eyes, a minimum of space was required and it was possible to train, for example, in a park where there are no benches and nowhere to place the smartphone steadily at the desired distance. As a gyroscope, it is possible to use smart watches and fitness bracelets without even removing them from your wrist.
Technical issues
There were difficulties with broadcast permissions on Wi-Fi networks on modern versions of Android and automatic search and docking in a local network without Internet between devices.
Versions using the Internet and an external WebSocket server on free plans showed a satisfactory delay in data transmission. It turned out that mobile versions of the game prototype compiled for outdated versions of Android on Delphi somehow break through the bans on brodcast in the latest versions of Android, but cannot be uploaded to the Play Market.
Obsolete Wi-Fi routers sometimes introduce too much delay in data transfer and make the prototype unplayable. This is frustrating, since in many public places Wi-Fi is implemented on old routers and you won’t be able to play normally. No settings were able to solve this problem. In new routers, there is no such problem even with a moderately high network load.

Marketing

Serious problem
Google and Yandex did not give traffic, and advertising is too expensive, $2 per click. The domain under the application fell under sanctions (filter for keywords through a dash in the domain name) and is forever pessimized. Zero traffic. Roughly the same story with Google Play. There was very little organic traffic, and then Google found potential vulnerabilities in one of the standard libraries used (JQuery and this is amazing!) And banned the application forever.
Practical results
In practical tests, the most effective and causing the greatest progress in muscle development were playing exercises for the press, since the usual, many dozens of times, twisting of the press, in my opinion, due to its extreme monotony and monotony, it is impossible for a simple athlete to perform in quantities that provide a real significant result. In a game form, it is quite simple and fun.
Development prospects
In addition to squat-controlled ping-pong, training games for biceps (a gyroscope on a dumbbell or a smart watch with a gyroscope on your wrist), push-ups with a sensor (watch or smartphone in a special case), various tilts to the right and left, twists for the press with one smartphone in hand or with a sensor (watch, smartphone) in the chest pocket are playable.
