This left other companies to control the familiar spot in the Student Union. Akademos won out of all the bids for the bookstore, but there’s a catch—it will all go online.

“There was no option to simply extend the contract with Follett,” Adam Rockman, vice president for Student Affairs, said. “Transition planning has been going on for several months, and we are looking forward to providing our students with the best and least-expensive options for buying their textbooks and course materials.”

The process for a new vendor involved students, faculty and administrators. After reviewing the different proposals, they decided Akademos. This makes QC the fourth CUNY college to have an online-only bookstore with the others being John Jay College, Medgar Evans College and the CUNY School of Law.

However, because of the change, employees at the bookstore will lose their jobs. The bookstore usually employs QC students or alums.

Joey Hernandez, 35, is assistant manager at the bookstore and worked there for 17 years. He is one person losing his job because of the change.

“I’m in charge of the course materials [and] now I won’t have a job,” Hernandez said. “Personally, I would have asked the students what they think about a digital bookstore before closing.”

Maria Cruz, 20 and a sales associate, said the bookstore did not just sell books. It sold items for to benefit students that they would need to get somewhere else.

“We sell a lot of Metrocards, and students pay with debit or credit cards,” Cruz said. “Now, students are pushed to go to the school’s ATMs to get cash out for Metrocards at the gas station.”

Cecila Ramos, 24 and a Team Leader at Follett, felt QC needs to focus more on students’ essentials.

“They need to know some students have vision problems and need actual textbooks, and I don’t think they thought of that when they changed the bookstore digitally,” Ramos said.

Joseph Tse, 24 and a QC alum, believed physical textbooks would help students more than any digital copy.

“Physical copies of books are better because it helps students study,” Tse said. “Buying the books at the store and reselling them back gives us a few dollars back in our pockets too.”

The plan is to convert the bookstore into another One Stop. The store does not sell rentals to students, and apparel is 50 percent off. In addition, no more shipments will come to the store.

Akademos will take over starting April 1. For now, students can access the new vendor at www.qcbookstore.com. In addition, students can sign into their CUNYFirst account. There, they can find the textbooks needed for classes and can order books online.

As Amazon Arrives, the Campus Bookstore Is a Books Store No More

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — As school started at Stony Brook University this month, two freshmen, Juan Adames and John Taveras, set out to buy textbooks.

They had not heard yet that the bookstore was a books store no more.

This summer, Stony Brook, part of the State University of New York, announced a partnership with the online retailer Amazon, now the university’s official book retailer. Students can purchase texts through a Stony Brook-specific Amazon page and have them delivered to campus.

In the campus store where the textbooks used to be, there are now adult coloring books, racks of university-branded polos and windbreakers and three narrow bookshelves displaying assorted novels. The rest of the store is a vibrant collage of spirit wear and school supplies: backpacks and baseball caps; pompom hats and striped scarves; notebooks and correction fluid. There will soon be a Starbucks.

“I was a bit thrown off by the appearance,” Mr. Adames said.

It is a conversation occurring on campuses across the country: If more and more students are buying and renting their course books online, why do they need a bookstore?

The Queens College bookstore went digital in April, forgoing brick-and-mortar altogether, Adam L. Rockman, the vice president of student affairs, said. Students order their books online, then have them shipped to personal addresses or to campus, where they are held until students pick them up.

“There are certainly some growing pains in getting used to it for many students,” Dr. Rockman said. “I think the human condition is not to really love change.”

The shift at Stony Brook is an attempt to provide more affordable options to students, according to Peter Baigent, the university’s vice president for student affairs. Amazon is “more of a marketplace,” where students can comparison shop, he said, as opposed to a conventional, fixed-price store. Eventually, students will be able to order texts for delivery to an Amazon area, which is still under construction, and pick them up from storage lockers.

Ripley MacDonald, director of Amazon Student Programs, said the company was also the primary course materials provider for Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Neither campus currently has a brick-and-mortar textbook store, and as at Stony Brook, the former bookstore in Amherst now sells novels and campus merchandise but not textbooks.

Purdue students can still buy textbooks from stores just off campus, including one that calls itself University Bookstore.

Other schools are using Amazon as a supplementary course materials provider, Mr. MacDonald said. Amazon has opened pickup locations at 12 universities since 2015, he said, and will have 17 by the end of this year.

Stony Brook, like other universities working in partnership with Amazon, receives a percentage of the sales taking place on the Amazon site, said Mark Pace, the chief contracts administrator for the university’s Faculty Student Association. Mr. Pace declined to say how much that amounted to, saying it was “proprietary, confidential financial information.”

According to an article by Jeffrey R. Young in The Chronicle of Higher Education, schools that team up with Amazon receive approximately two percent of sales from the web retailer.

Robert D. Wynkoop, managing director of Purdue University treasurer’s office, told The Chronicle that the school had made $1 million on the partnership since 2014.

But partnerships with online vendors have potential downsides, Bob Walton, chief executive of the National Association of College Stores, said. Using any remote supplier means students may acquire the wrong books; students on financial aid must figure out how to order books and get reimbursement passes. The buyback system is thrown off.

“If they save five bucks and have a miserable week because they can’t even get the damn thing, what good is that?” he said. “It’s not that people can’t figure these things out, it’s just a hassle.”

Kevin Costello, a sophomore studying biomedical engineering at Stony Brook, politely vented his “frustration and confusion” when he learned that employees at the former bookstore could not help when Amazon sent him the wrong course material.

“Now I’m going to have to be on the phone with customer service for a while, probably,” said Mr. Costello, who received a disc meant for a political science class instead of his calculus course material. “There needs to be a better system.”

Eventually, students will be able to take their questions to the Amazon pickup area, where the staff will provide customer service.

According to Mr. Walton, textbooks are generally not the focus of college bookstores, anyway. A school on a two-semester system has an approximately eight-week period of textbook activity per year, he estimated.

“The function of the store has been oversimplified to textbooks,” he said. “The store really functions on a variety of levels.”

Admissions tour groups pass through; visiting alumni stop by; faculty and staff members go there for the convenience, Mr. Walton said.

“If anything’s in danger, I would say the thing that’s probably the danger is that textbooks are going to go away,” he said. “The store continues to serve a number of functions that people just don’t recognize.”

At Stony Brook, the former bookstore has become “a branding piece,” Mr. Baigent said, which helps to provide more of a “campus university identity.”

Barnes & Noble College, which operated the Stony Brook store when it sold textbooks, will continue to run it, and is also taking over the other two campus stores, neither of which sell textbooks.

Barnes & Noble College Bookstores dropped “bookstores” from its name several years ago.

“Over the last eight years, our business has really changed dramatically,” Patrick Maloney, the company president, said. “To call it a bookstore any longer was very limiting.”

However, 98 percent of the stores Barnes & Noble College operates still carry course materials in various formats, Mr. Maloney said.

“We firmly believe in the importance of a physical store,” Lisa Malat, the chief marketing officer, said. “Millennials and Gen Z are still very much committed to the physical shopping experience.”

Though perhaps not only for books: In recent years, Barnes & Noble College has been offering engagement programs to bring students into its bookstores nationwide, like “V.I.P. shopping nights,” for students who want help in the textbook aisles or advice from peers, and “de-stress events,” where students can spend time coloring, or play with puppies.

Universities and Virtual Bookstores – Broadview Press

Early last year I met with quite a surprise when I visited the bookstore at Queens College in New York. That’s one of a dozen or so North American universities that I call on fairly regularly, and I’d always been impressed by their bookstore operation—both by how well the little store was organized and by how friendly and helpful the staff always were. (I would sometimes take a cab straight to Queens College from LaGuardia, for example, and when I did the textbook manager, Joey Hernandez, was always happy to let me leave my roller bag in his office for a few hours while I called on academics.)

When I visited in early 2016, the bookstore was about to close—for good; Joey Hernandez and many others were out of a job.

Queens College is one of a growing number of universities and colleges that have replaced their traditional bookstore with a virtual bookstore. Instead of buying their texts in person, students buy them through an online storefront, and the physical books are then shipped to them. (Sometimes the institution retains a shop that sells university sweatshirts and coffee mugs and beer steins; sometimes the apparel and souvenir merchandizing is also moved online.)

The lure of these operations is that costs will supposedly be reduced, online ordering will supposedly be straightforward and convenient for students, books will supposedly be more affordable, and academics will supposedly have fewer hassles dealing with bookstore foul-ups. It may all sound good in theory (at least to those who have no desire for browsing in a bookshop to be part of the university experience). But in practice it seems it doesn’t always work out so well. Here’s the reaction posted online by a philosophy instructor at Harold Washington College in Chicago, for example—one who had expressed enthusiasm for the change to a virtual bookstore before it happened:

I should have known better. My classes are currently plagued with students who do not yet have their books. We’re in week four, and students report they haven’t received their books. The first week, a number of students claimed they had no way of knowing what books to buy. I’m sure the information was available to them, but they didn’t know where to get it. Today, I heard reports of one student still waiting on his book (though he ordered it on week two) and another student who had had first experienced a delay in shipping … [and then] received a book for a psychology class. Maybe some of my students are exaggerating their book woes, or blaming the system when it is in fact their fault. But it can’t be true for all students. If we had a brick and mortar [bookstore], I would know that they had a clear opportunity to get their books.

Even for the bookstores themselves, as it turns out, things often don’t work out as planned. Wooster College, for example, ran a pilot project in 2016, adopting the “hybrid model” of continuing to sell apparel, stationery, and art supplies, while moving its textbook “store” online. In a December 2 online article addressed to his “fellow College Store Professionals,” Bookstore Director Kevin Leiter explained why they have decided at the end of the year to become a full-service textbook store once again:

The business reasons to consider a hybrid model are sound. … The hidden costs can be significant, however, and it’s why I advocate that college stores should continue to carry textbooks in their store. … What we discovered during the two-semester pilot was that the absence of textbooks in our store drove students away. We were no longer a part of the back-to-school ritual. [In theory,] the only change was that textbooks were being offered online through a virtual site. It was a branded and linked site connected to our store. Students were given instructions on how to [order books]. …  Only they weren’t. Student orders dropped significantly term to term. Even though prices were competitive on the virtual site, students weren’t going there. Why? Because there was no innate advantage to doing so. No compelling tie to the college, no convenience of picking books up right before classes. No friendly bookstore staff to help on the site. Furthermore, when students or faculty experienced trouble with books or adoptions, as is inevitable every term, our staff was unable to impact results directly. We were relegated to the role of the middleman, relaying issues to our vendor partner and hoping to influence results, rather than creating solutions for our customers.

We at Broadview can’t say whether these experiences are typical. But we can attest to numerous cases of confusion over the availability of Broadview books at universities with virtual bookstores; several academics have been in touch after having been told by virtual bookstore representatives that they could not order Broadview texts, and it has sometimes required a good deal of effort to sort out the confusion and make sure students were able to purchase the Broadview books the instructor had chosen for the course. The problem of text availability is of course not unique to virtual bookstores; however, if issues arise, publishers (and faculty!) have a direct point of contact for addressing and resolving them as quickly as possible at a traditional store. Much as Kevin Leiter found, any difficulties we have encountered with virtual bookstores have been exacerbated by having no phone number to call or representative to contact, only a generic email address for the vendor partnered with the bookstore.

We are of course in no position to say whether a virtual bookstore would be the right choice for your university or college; every institution has its own particular needs, and it may be that a virtual bookstore will work well at some institutions. I should also make clear that I’m writing here about systemic issues with virtual bookstores; I’m not saying anything against the companies that run them, or their staff (who, when we have dealt with them, have been as friendly and helpful as are most staff at traditional university bookstores). But on the basis of what we have heard, we’d be inclined to advise any institution considering changing to this system to be extremely cautious—and urge academics who are concerned about course text issues to become involved in the decision-making process. And for those of you who may already have virtual bookstores on campus, you might consider instead looking for local independent bookstores with whom you might be able to place course adoption orders if you’d prefer to give your students a bricks and mortar option for purchasing your books.
