What are the key features of vintage t-shirts. How can you identify authentic vintage tees. Where are the best places to find and purchase vintage t-shirts. What should collectors look for when evaluating the condition and value of vintage shirts.
Understanding Vintage T-Shirt Terminology and Materials
Vintage t-shirts have a language all their own. To navigate the world of classic tees, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with key terms and materials:
50/50 or Fifty-Fifty Blend
This refers to t-shirts made from an even mix of cotton and polyester. While 100% cotton tees are prized by some collectors, 50/50 blends are actually quite common in vintage shirts. The polyester content often helps these shirts retain their shape and resist shrinkage better than pure cotton.
Deadstock
Deadstock describes t-shirts that are new and unworn, often sitting untouched in storage for decades. How can you identify deadstock vintage tees? Look for these telltale signs:
- Smooth, uncreased seams
- Crisp, undamaged tags
- Multiple identical shirts found together
While “deadstock” has a stricter definition in other vintage categories, it’s used more loosely with t-shirts. As long as the condition clearly indicates an unworn shirt, many sellers will use the term.
Iron-On Heat Transfers
This printing method uses heat to adhere graphics directly to the shirt fabric. Vintage iron-ons often feature detailed photographs or intricate designs difficult to achieve with traditional screen printing. However, they’re prone to cracking and peeling over time.
Identifying Authentic Vintage T-Shirts
Authenticating vintage tees requires a keen eye for details. Here are some key factors to examine:
Tag Designs and Materials
Vintage t-shirt tags often feature distinct typography, materials, and designs that evolved over the decades. Research tag styles for popular brands to help date shirts accurately.
Fabric Composition and Feel
Older tees often have a softer, more lived-in feel due to the manufacturing processes and materials used. The weight and drape of the fabric can be telling indicators of age.
Stitching and Construction
Examine seams, hems, and overall construction. Many vintage shirts feature single-stitched seams, while modern reproductions often use double-stitching for durability.
Where to Find Vintage T-Shirts
The hunt for the perfect vintage tee can take you to various shopping destinations:
Thrift Stores and Charity Shops
These remain excellent sources for affordable vintage finds. patience and frequent visits can yield amazing discoveries.
Vintage Clothing Stores
Specialized shops curate collections of vintage tees, often at higher prices but with a focus on quality and authenticity.
Online Marketplaces
Platforms like eBay, Etsy, and Depop offer vast selections of vintage shirts from sellers worldwide. Exercise caution and thoroughly research sellers and listings.
Estate Sales and Flea Markets
These can be treasure troves for vintage clothing, including t-shirts that may have been stored away for decades.
Evaluating Condition and Value
When assessing vintage t-shirts, consider these factors:
Wear and Tear
Examine the shirt for holes, stains, fading, and stretched-out areas. Minor imperfections are common in truly vintage pieces, but severe damage can significantly impact value.
Graphic Integrity
For printed tees, check the condition of the graphics. Are they cracked, peeling, or faded? Well-preserved prints command higher prices.
Rarity and Cultural Significance
Limited edition shirts, those associated with significant events or popular culture moments, and tees from defunct brands can be highly valuable to collectors.
Caring for Your Vintage T-Shirt Collection
Proper care is essential to preserve your vintage finds:
Washing and Drying
Hand-wash or use gentle machine cycles with cold water. Avoid harsh detergents and opt for air-drying to prevent shrinkage and wear.
Storage
Store shirts flat or carefully folded to prevent stretching. Use acid-free tissue paper for delicate or valuable pieces.
Display
If displaying shirts, avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading. Consider framing particularly valuable or fragile tees.
The Rise of Vintage-Inspired Modern Tees
As the popularity of vintage t-shirts has grown, so too has the market for modern reproductions and vintage-inspired designs:
Reproduction vs. Inspiration
Some brands create exact replicas of classic designs, while others draw inspiration from vintage aesthetics to create new graphics and styles.
Ethical Considerations
The production of new “vintage-style” shirts raises questions about sustainability and authenticity in the vintage market. Consider the environmental impact of your t-shirt purchases.
Building a Vintage T-Shirt Collection
Whether you’re a serious collector or simply enjoy wearing unique tees, here are tips for curating your vintage shirt wardrobe:
Define Your Focus
Do you prefer specific decades, brands, or themes? Narrowing your focus can make collecting more rewarding and manageable.
Research and Network
Join online communities, attend vintage clothing events, and connect with fellow collectors to expand your knowledge and find leads on rare pieces.
Quality vs. Quantity
Decide whether you want a large collection of affordable tees or a smaller selection of high-value, pristine vintage shirts.
Vintage t-shirts offer a unique way to connect with fashion history, express your personal style, and potentially make savvy investments. By understanding the terminology, learning to identify authentic pieces, and knowing where to shop, you’ll be well-equipped to build an impressive collection of classic tees. Remember that condition, rarity, and cultural significance all play roles in determining a shirt’s value, but ultimately, the most important factor is your personal connection to each piece. Happy hunting!

We ship a lot of vintage t-shirts every month. If you want to get some in the mail, subscribe to Comma, Vintage today.
Glossary of Vintage T-Shirt Terms
50/50 or FIFTY-FIFTY: This describes t-shirts made from a blend of equal parts cotton and polyester. They’re not uncommon—I find 50/50 t-shirts more commonly than 100% cotton ones–but it’s often used in listings and so worth knowing.
- Tag on a 50-50 vintage t-shirt. Note the Futura all-caps.
- Tag on a 50-50 vintage Stedman t-shirt.
DEADSTOCK: Deadstock refers to a t-shirt in new and unworn condition. Among vintage items, deadstock t-shirts are relatively common. Chances are they sat untouched in a screen-printers inventory for decades before being donated or sold.
Because they were not often individually tagged or packaged, determining whether a piece is deadstock requires some sleuthing:
- Smooth seams: On a shirt that has been washed, the seams will often cinch up, creating a bit of a ripple at the hem, neck, and shoulders.
- Crisp tag: The tags on many vintage t-shirts are made of a stiff, papery material. These tags degrade quickly after washing.
- Found in bulk: If you find 7 or 70 identical t-shirts together, it’s likely that they’re unworn. Printers often liquidate inventory in lots rather than as individual pieces.
- Deadstock Screenstars tag
- Slightly worn screen stars tag
- Heavily worn Screen Stars tag
- These blank t-shirts were all found together in a single lot. Though they lack tags or packaging, I feel confident claiming they’re deadstock. I cannot, however, prove this conclusively.
Use of the term “deadstock” seems to me a bit more lenient in vintage t-shirt sales than in jeans or sneakers. I endorse use of the term so long as condition is reasonably deduced.
It’s a different calculus than with Jordans or Levi’s, of course: Many deadstock t-shirts are being sold for daily wear and can be had for less than $20.
IRON-ON HEAT TRANSFER: An iron-on graphic is exactly what it sounds like: An image or text transferred to the fabric using heat. They are subject to peeling and cracking, and don’t hold up well to numerous washes. On the flip side, they often feature photographs and detail difficult to otherwise put on a t-shirt. And vintage iron-on graphics can be bought unused and newly applied to any t-shirt you please.
- Iron-on Heat Transfers allow for more color and detail, but the image is prone to wrinkles and cracking.
- Vintage iron-on graphic, dated 1980. The wearer looks good for 50.
MOUNTED COLLAR: A mounted collar is sewn onto the top of the t-shirt, rather than sewn under the fabric. In my experience, mounted collars hold their shape better than sewn-under ones.
- Note how the edge of the collar is sewn over the body of the fabric.
- Here the collar is sewn under the fabric.
An older vintage t-shirt–from the 1960s, for example–is more likely to have a mounted collar than one from the 1980s or 1990s. So, do a double check if you see one in the wild. Of course, Russell Athletic still mounts collars in 2018.
PAPER THIN: This term is used to describe t-shirts that are particularly well-worn and soft. A common practice of proof is hold the shirt up to a light. I tried my best below, though there are much thinner shirts in the world.
- If you look closely, you can see architectural details through the fabric.
- Showing a hand through a paper-thin t-shirt is a popular photograph. So, here is mine.
RINGER: A ringer has different colored collar and cuffs made from a ribbed material. They offer a distinctively vintage look.
- Vintage ringer t-shirts hug the biceps more than a standard cuff.
- Here the graphics, collar, and cuff are the same color, giving a sense of cohesion to the piece.

SCREEN PRINTED: In screen printing, an inky medium is pressed through a screen and onto the t-shirt. Because the process requires a moderately laborious set up, many vintage screen printed t-shirts–especially those from small events or local institutions–feature only one or two colors.
- In screen printing, the ink is applied onto the fabric through a stencil.
- Schools, bands, and events often screen printed in only one color.
“SELVAGE POCKET:” Many sellers erroneously use this term to describe the reinforcement tape used within the pockets of many vintage t-shirts. The fabric is not selvage in the least. But-shirts with reinforced pockets tend to be of good age and quality, so it’s useful term to know.
- This is the exterior of the pocket. Note the single row of stitching beneath the opening.
- Inside the pocket, the reinforcement tape is visible. This is sometimes erroneously called selvage.
SINGLE STITCH: Single stitch refers to the prevalent mode of construction in vintage t-shirts. Specifically, it refers to the finishing on the cuff, hem, and shoulder of the t-shirt, where a single line of stitching secures the fabric edge. On most contemporary t-shirts–your standard Gildan, for example–a double row of stitching is used.
- Close up of shoulder seams.
- This photo shows the the difference between single stitch and double stitch construction
When thrifting, you might scan the t-shirt rack cuff by cuff rather than flipping through every single hanger. It’s a time saver.
Of course, not every interesting vintage t-shirt is single stitch, and not every single stitch t-shirt is truly vintage. A number of brands use single stitch construction to replicate the vintage look. And many vintage shirts, especially those from the 90s, may not be single stitched throughout.
THRASHED: Thrashed is the go-to term to describe a shirt that’s heavily worn but still wearable. The fabric will be thin, there may be holes and tears, and there may be stains. I don’t have any thrashed t-shirts in my collection, but the screen capture below illustrates the concept:
Generally, the damage is from frequent washing and wear: Discolored collars, holes at the shoulders, and frayed hems are common. Natural fading and repairs are often desired. A giant wine stain on the front does not contribute to thrashiness.
TRI-BLEND: Tri-blend refers to vintage t-shirts made from from cotton, polyester, and rayon fabric. These t-shirts are desirable for their rarity, softness and durability. The yarns are often heathered, giving the fabric a unique, variegated look.
- Heathering creates variations of light and dark color within a fabric.
TUBULAR KNIT (OR, CIRCULAR KNIT): Circular knit t-shirts are made from fabric knit into a tube shape. As a result, t-shirts made with circular knit fabric lack side seams. In my experience, tubular knit t-shirts drape more fluidly and more naturally than shirts with side seams.
- On a vintage tubular knit t-shirt, the fabric forms a complete cylinder around the torso.
- On many new and vintage t-shirts, two panels of fabric are joined with side seams.
Please note that circular knit does not mean loop-wheeled. It’s a bit of a frog and toad scenario: Loop wheeled fabrics are made on a particular kind of vintage circular knitting machine. You can read more about loopwheeled fabrics at Heddel’s, though understand that circular knitting is still done on an industrial scale in 2018.
CATALOG OF BRANDS AND TAGS
There are, to be certain, dozens of vintage t-shirt brands. But some are more common than others. Below is a catalog of comma tags I’ve come across, as well as approximate dates of production.
The only certain way to date a vintage t-shirt is to have a date attached to the graphic. When we find multiple t-shirts with the same tag but different printed dates, we can reasonably estimate a range of production for all shirts with that tag. So, if we find a shirt with a given tag but no visible date, we can roughly determine its age.
1970s:
1980s:
1990s
This list is not exhaustive, nor do I insist on precision. I hope to add to it over time.

SIZING
When looking for vintage t-shirts, the size on the tag is, for the most part, arbitrary. I wear a small in 90% of contemporary brands. My personal vintage t-shirt collection ranges from small to extra large, and they all fit about the same.
The photo on the left shows shirts tagged “Extra Large.” Note how they vary in width. The photo on the right shows shirts tagged “Large.” Note how they vary in length.
- All of these shirts are tagged “Extra Large.” As you can see, they vary widely in width.
- All these shirts are tagged “Large.” They vary a great deal in length and width.
Generally speaking, the size of a shirt relative to its tagged size has increased over time. That is to say, a large from 1995 will be bigger than a large from 1975. There’s plenty of anthropological explanations for this, but I’m not qualified to investigate them.
It’s more important to understand shrinkage. If you find a vintage t-shirt in deadstock condition, prepare for it to shrink considerably. 100% cotton t-shirts will shrink more than polyester blends.
When thrifting, take time to search a size above what you normally wear. There may be pieces that fit quite well. When buying online, look for accurate measurements of length, shoulder width, and chest width (pit to pit).
Final Thoughts
At once ubiquitous and unique, t-shirts are great gateway to the world of vintage clothing. They offer styles and stories and fits as various their owners. I’m hoping this guide can help you take the leap.
If you want to learn more about the world of vintage t-shirt collecting, I recommend exploring the Defunkd Vintage T-Shirt Collective. There’s a lot of awesome, timeless content there.
You can also check out the books Rap Tees or Vintage T-Shirts for some cool photos and history.
But if you need further incentive, please know that the global t-shirt economy is one of the most wasteful and exploitative on Earth. Buying used t-shirts helps, in a tiny but meaningful way, to counter emissions, improper chemical disposal, and human exploitation, not to mention the literal waste of discarded t-shirts.
Crux Pro Bike Cyclocross Specialized 2021 Smoke/Dove Grey
When we set out to design a new ‘cross rig, we didn’t just want to make another adventure bike with added tire clearance—we knew we had to create a purebred racing steed that was fast, confident, lightweight, and rides like no other ‘cross bike out there. And sure, with multiple Cyclocross World Championships to its name, the CruX has more than proven itself in ‘cross, but we’re proud to say that this CruX takes the legacy to a whole different level.
This CruX Pro comes spec’d with a accurate and quick-shifting SRAM Force 1 eTap AXS hydraulic disc groupset, lightweight and durable Roval Terra CL Disc wheels, and 2Bliss Ready, 700x33mm Tracer Pro tires that hookup over nasty terrain.
- Starting with the frame, we implemented our Rider-First Engineered™ technology that was first introduced on our Tarmacs. Using size-specific tubes and layups, this technology allows the CruX to feature the same ride characteristics across every size in the range. Not only this, but it also allowed us to significantly drop the frame weight, so the CruX now comes in around a scant 900 grams for a 56cm (*dependent on frame size and color)—over 400 grams lighter than the previous frameset. A light and stiff frame, alone, isn’t useful in a ‘cross race if it isn’t compliant, however, which is why the new CruX also combines stiffness and compliance in all the right places. And to assist with the latter, we lowered the seat collar by two centimeters for more exposed seatpost and cushion for big hits.
- We also know that cyclocross races are often won in the corners and over the barriers, which is why the CruX geometry takes this into account. The top tube has been designed for easy shouldering when you’re hopping off to clear barriers, as it features a large opening to the front triangle and a flat bottom. For stability in the corners and on off-camber sections, the geometry has a low bottom bracket and a sharp front-end. This combination also helps to initiate corners, regardless of the terrain.
- With maximum mud-shedding ability in mind, we included eight millimeters of clearance on all sides of a 33mm tire, providing plenty of clearance for muddy conditions. After all, frame weight becomes irrelevant when it’s covered in 10 pounds of mud.
Maryland Catholic school hosts pep rally to cheer on Team USA swimmers
BETHESDA, Md. — For all the positive energy and enthusiasm at the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart July 19, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Olympic-bound swimmers and alumnae, Katie Ledecky and Phoebe Bacon, could hear the exuberant cheers and applause all the way from Tokyo.
Hundreds of well-wishers gathered for a pep rally at the school’s Bethesda campus in suburban Washington.
Students of all grades, including members of the school’s Gator swim team, as well as faculty, staff, parents and alumnae — most wearing Katie Ledecky/Phoebe Bacon Team USA T-shirts — turned out in force to show love, support and pride for the hometown Olympians.
Ledecky is a 2015 graduate of Stone Ridge, and Bacon graduated from the all-girls Catholic school in 2020.
The outdoor rally was held just steps away from the building that houses the pool where Ledecky and Bacon spent countless hours in the water.
Students made posters, posed for photos with life-size cardboard cutouts of the Olympians and shouted a few of Stone Ridge’s rousing swim cheers. The girls loudly chanted, “G.A.T.O.R.S.!” “Go for Gold!” and “USA! USA!” with several holding signs that read, “Go Katie and Phoebe!” or “BLT” — short for Bacon Ledecky Team.
Among the nearly 300 excited supporters at the rally was Philippa Bacon, mom of 18-year-old Phoebe. She was grateful to see the amazing turnout and support for both swimmers.
Of Phoebe’s Olympics journey, she said, “It’s rather unbelievable. We are just amazed that she’s there. Every now and then, it just hits me. We are thrilled.”
Philippa Bacon said Ledecky, 24, “paved the way” for her daughter in the Washington area’s highly competitive sport of swimming, as well as Phoebe’s decision to attend Stone Ridge. Both girls also graduated from Little Flower School in Bethesda and swam year round for the Nation’s Capital Swim Club.
Unfortunately, no spectators, including family members were permitted to attend the Olympic Games in Tokyo due to COVID-19 safety precautions. Both the Bacon and Ledecky families attended the U.S. Swim Team Olympic Trials in June in Omaha, Nebraska, and cheered their daughters to Olympic-qualifying victories.
First-time Olympian Bacon will swim in the women’s 200-meter backstroke. Ledecky, in her third Olympics, will swim freestyle in the women’s 200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter races, the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, and for the first time in Olympic history – the women’s 1500-meter freestyle. Their events are July 25 through July 30.
Eleanor Sun and Erin Gemmell, members of the Stone Ridge class of 2023, also competed in several swimming events at the U.S. Swim Team Olympic Trials. Although, they didn’t make Team USA this time, they attended the rally and are proud of their former teammate Phoebe.
“It was great to see how much she accomplished. I’m very excited to watch her events on TV,” Sun told the Catholic Standard, newspaper of the Archdiocese of Washington. She also said Ledecky continues to be a booster for her alma mater’s swim team, sending messages of support before and after important meets.
Sun recalled Ledecky attending a 2019 Stone Ridge meet while home during a college break. “It meant a lot to us,” she said.
Gemmell, whose dad, Bruce Gemmell, coached Ledecky several years at the Nation’s Capital Swim Club, said Ledecky is a role model for her.
“I always said, ‘I want to do what Katie does,’” said Gemmell, who hopes to qualify for the U.S. Swim Team at the next Olympic Trials in 2024, when the Games will be held in Paris.
Even the youngest members of the Stone Ridge school community couldn’t contain their excitement over their school’s now-famous Olympic teammates.
“I think they are amazing,” said rising third-grader Ariadne Nelson, adding she planned to be jumping up and down and cheering in front of her television while watching Bacon and Ledecky swim their races.

Das ist freeride! Das ist “Deuter”! Finding the best freeride backpack
What do you associate with freeriding? With dazzling snow under the rays of the mountain sun, with the rustle of ski edges, with majestic pictures of winter nature away from well-groomed slopes and lifts, with fir trees in fluffy white caps and a frosty wind in your face. And how good it is when you have a reliable companion behind your shoulders – a comfortable and practical backpack, which contains everything you need: an avalanche shovel and probe, a thermos with tea, a snack, a first aid kit, sunscreen, extra warm clothes, a life blanket, a flashlight, a multitool, a spare mask, etc. mittens, and, if necessary, climbing equipment, rope and “crampons”. How to make all these things easily and competently fit in your backpack? What should it be, and what special “chips” that make the life of freeriders much easier do the manufacturers offer us? We will cover all these issues in our article. And we will do this using the example of a backpack from the German company “Deuter” under the self-explanatory name “Freerider”. Let’s go!
First, let’s figure out what we basically want from a freeride backpack.
First, it must be of sufficient volume. Here I can actually hear the voices of critics: “I also discovered America!” But there are often cases when, in pursuit of a beautiful appearance, a backpack of small volume is bought for freeriding, in which it is simply not physically possible to fit everything you need.
Secondly, the backpack should have mounts for your rolling equipment: skis or snowboard. If you are not a member of a team of professional riders, they do not ride you to a point on a helicopter and, in general, a “helicopter nicht”, then you will have to stomp and sweat a lot. And your skating friend will have to go uphill, pardon the tautology, on his own hump.
Hence the third: the harness on such a backpack should be as comfortable as possible. It is necessary that it sits very tightly and securely on your back.Adjustable shoulder straps, waist belt and chest relief are required. The weight should be as close to the back as possible – this makes it much easier to carry, and, which is extremely important when riding, while the natural position of the center of gravity in our body is practically not disturbed. In addition, it would be quite nice if the backpack did not hinder the movement of the body, and you did not feel like a knight in an iron cuirass.
Fourthly, the materials from which the freeride backpack is made must be of very high strength. The loads that he will experience are much higher than those of ordinary urban backpacks. And even higher can be the cost of error for incorrectly selected equipment. Hence the requirement for maximum reliability of all elements: fabrics, threads, zippers, accessories, slings and others.
Of the additional highly desirable functions, it is worth noting a separate compartment for avalanche equipment, the ability to use a hydrator, a pocket lined with a soft cloth for a mask, loops for attaching poles or an ice ax, a system for fixing a helmet, as well as a dense back, which in case of something can serve you as an additional protection.
Let’s see if all these elements are included in the Freerider series of backpacks from the German company Deuter.
And we would like to start with the most advanced backpack in the line.
Deuter Freerider Pro
This is one of the most functional, durable and comfortable backpacks for winter sports. It and its modifications have been successfully sold for many years and have earned the respect and love of riders.
Available in two versions: standard and “female”.The latter is designated by the abbreviation SL (Slim Line) in the name and a bright removable flower on the backpack itself. It has changes compared to the regular version. Firstly, the back of such a backpack is shorter. Thus, it is more suitable for women who are generally shorter than men. It also has a slightly smaller volume (by two liters). The shoulder straps are S-shaped, in order to chastely bend around … uh … zones of female anatomy, the straps themselves are not so wide, their ends are additionally narrowed, located closer to each other, and they have soft edges along the entire length so as not to squeeze or rub in these very zones. The hip belts are conical in shape, that is, they do not cover strictly straight, but do it at an angle, slightly tapering upward. So the backpack sits better on, as a rule, more rounded and wider female hips. I must say that a “female” backpack is perfect not only for ladies, but also for teenagers and short thin men – everything is decided by fitting.
Each version, both standard and SL, is available in two colors. The volume of a regular “Freerider Pro” is 30 liters, in the “female” version – 28 liters, which is quite enough to fit inside everything you need for a day freeride outing.
What’s so special about this backpack? Why has it earned such recognition from so many winter skating enthusiasts?
Firstly, it is the comfortable harness “Deuter Alpine”. Thanks to the ergonomic, slightly curved shape of the shoulder straps and chest strap, excellent comfort and a perfect fit on the back are achieved. The belt with a convenient tightening system tightly fits the body, but at the same time, due to the movable wings, it does not constrain movements as much as possible – it literally follows your turns and bends. However, if desired, the belt can be removed altogether – it is attached in the lumbar region with wide Velcro. This is relevant, for example, if you want to use a backpack not only as a “rolling” one, but only later, in the city, as an everyday one. What is very important: the load with such a harness is located close to the back, and therefore to the center of gravity, without imbalance. This is true not only when skiing or snowboarding, jumping and dropping, but also when climbing a mountain on difficult terrain. No wonder this harness is called “Alpine” – it came from the series of mountaineering backpacks of this German brand and has proven itself well in products intended for freeriding.A secure fit to the body, optimal load distribution and a comfortable fit came in handy here as well. The backpack has a resilient U-shaped inner frame that makes it easy to load and helps to distribute weight correctly. By the way, about the weight: for the standard version it is 1720 grams, for the “female” SL – 1680. This is a lot, but the strength of the materials, the reliability of the structure and many useful functions are worth it.
Secondly, “Freerider Pro” is sewn from a very dense and durable polyamide synthetic fabric with a linear density of 420 D (denier) fibers. For comparison, I would like to say that a standard tourist backpack “Aircontact” of the same company is made for the most part of the same fabric, but with a density of only 100 denier, and only on the bottom is used a fabric of increased strength of 600 D. This tells us that our Freerider is ready for the toughest endurance tests. Watch out for all the trees on the way down!
Thirdly, in this backpack everything is in order with the ski and board fastening system. Here the manufacturer offers several options.
Skis can be locked parallel to the sides or diagonally. In the first case, a pair of lower reinforced and upper, with tightening fasteners serve for this. In the latter version, the skis are held on two straps. By the way, if they are not needed, they can be hidden in special pockets so that they do not cling to anything.
The snowboard is fastened as standard: with compression straps. They are additionally reinforced with trapezoidal inserts of durable fabric in places where edging can fray.
Instead of a snowboard, you can also attach snowshoes here.
Well, and fourthly, the backpack is equipped with a lot of useful “gadgets”, each of which greatly simplifies the life of the rider.Check it out for yourself.
The contents of the backpack are easily accessible through the zip on the back.
Now, to get something you need, just throw the backpack with the attached board on the snow, unfasten the two fastex fasteners on the shoulder straps and open the U-shaped zipper. Convenient “suitcase” access to your belongings is ready!
The Freerider has a spacious front pocket for avalanche equipment: shovels and probe. There is a special cylindrical sewn cover under the disassembled handle of the shovel so that it does not dangle.
Usually ski skins are also put into this pocket. In the front there is also a compartment for valuables with a plastic clip for attaching, for example, keys. A small first aid kit also fits well in this compartment.
On the front of the backpack there are also loops for fixing an ice ax and trekking or folding ski poles. If they are not needed, they can be stowed away in pockets that are almost invisible at a glance.
“Freerider Pro” is compatible with drinking systems up to three liters. If desired, you can purchase a thermal insulating cover and a heat-insulated tube in the kit for the hydrator to protect it from frost.
The set includes a net for attaching a helmet. With its help, it is securely attached by four special loops on the front side of the “Freerider”. If this option is not needed, the net is stowed away in a pocket inside the main compartment.
The Freerider Pro has a quick access pocket at the top of the backpack to store your mask. The inside is made of soft fleece to avoid scratching the optics.
By the way, about the pockets: on the waist belt there are two small ones for little things like a favorite bar or keys to a snowmobile.
If you have any additional equipment, it can be secured on two rows of loops on the front of the backpack.
Inside the main compartment, in a special pocket, there is a removable foam seat mat. It gives extra rigidity to the structure of the backpack and also protects your spine. In general, due to its well-thought-out suspension system, dense backrest and if there are things in the backpack, a rider can do without a turtle or similar protection.
By the way, if you do not use a hydrator, it is convenient to put wet things in a pocket for storing it. The fabric it is made from is excellent at repelling water, and you can not be afraid that the rest of the things in your backpack will damp.
In general, reliable, comfortable, thought out to the smallest detail “Deuter Freerider Pro” embodies the quality of this German company. Every little thing tells us how much attention was paid to the development of this backpack by its creators. Many fans of winter skiing on the mountain slopes loved it so much that they wear it all year round just like an everyday city backpack, it is so comfortable and durable.
Deuter Freerider Lite
In a sense, it is the opposite of the Freerider Pro backpack. If the “proshka” emphasizes maximum strength, reliability, durability and many useful and convenient design solutions, then the “Lite” model, as you might guess from the name, is light weight and ergonomics while maintaining most of the functions of its heavier fellow.
“Freerider Lite” is smaller in volume: 25 and 22 liters. It, like the “Pro” version, is available in standard and SL versions, which weigh 940 and 890 grams, respectively. This is very small for a winter “skating” backpack with the ability to carry skis and boards.
What explains such a low weight?
First, the advanced lightweight harness “Deuter Lite”. It is designed for fast movement with a small load. The flexible U-shaped frame made of resilient plastic inside the backrest provides stability and comfortable load distribution with a minimum dead weight. At the same time, the backpack is cut in such a way that the load is located as close to the body as possible. And thanks to the S-shaped shoulder straps, adjustable chest strap and padded hip wings, it sits snugly on your back and does not interfere with difficult movements.
The belt here, unlike the “Pro” version, is not removable. And in general, the harness is much lighter, which means it is designed for carrying small loads.
Secondly, the lower weight is provided by the upper material, which is less dense and durable than the Freerider Pro.In the “Lite” version, the backpack is made of polyamide fabric with a linear density of fibers no longer 420, but 100 D (denier). This is quite enough for most tasks of the average “rider”, but the safety margin of this version of the backpack is lower than that of the “pro”.
Third, Freerider Lite is also lighter because it lacks some of the Pro features. For example, there is no quick access to the contents of the backpack from the back, a removable seat mat, a soft fleece pocket for a mask. Avalanche equipment is not placed in a separate front pocket, but in the main compartment.
Skis can only be attached in the diagonal position – there are no side straps. Pockets on the waist belt too.
In all other respects, the Freerider Lite offers us the same set of useful features: reinforced mounts for a snowboard or snowshoe, compatibility with a drinking system, a compartment for wet clothes, loops for an ice ax, poles and a helmet on the front, a pocket with a snap hook for valuables little things and first aid kits.
In general, this backpack is perfect for those who do not ride difficult, long freeride routes, but appreciate lightness, minimalism and simplicity. Also, due to its very low weight, it is well suited for girls. And outside the mountain slopes, it can be successfully used as a regular lightweight casual backpack.
Deuter Freerider
This is a backpack for those who, like the Chinese sages, love the “middle way”.
It differs from the “Pro” version by its smaller volume. The standard size is 26 liters, in the SL it is 24. Also, the upper fabric is not so dense here: 210 denier everywhere except the bottom. The latter is made of 600 denier polyester fabric. As a reminder, in the “Freerider Pro” it is 420 denier, and the bottom is also additionally reinforced. There is no ordinary “Freerider” and access from the back. The waist belt cannot be removed without pockets, however, it has a loop for attaching carabiners, climbing equipment and your favorite teddy bear. There is also no strap similar to a lanyard “daisy chain” for attaching additional equipment on the front part.
From the “light” version, the “Freerider” is distinguished by the possibility of fastening skis vertically on the sides (there are special straps), a pocket with a fleece lining for a mask or goggles, a spacious front compartment for avalanche equipment and a removable seat mat in the back. The harness here is the same as in the “Pro” version, which came from the world of mountain climbers “Alpine”: with a comfortable fit and close position to the body and the backpack, and the load, tight belt coverage and maximum freedom from your movements.
In general, if you want a backpack with almost full functionality of the “Freerider Pro”, but much lighter than it, then this is your choice. Weight in a standard size of 1220 grams versus 1720 “proshki” speaks for itself. And additional strength of materials may not be needed at all.In any case, it’s up to you to decide.
If you want the most “pumped-through” rolling backpack, then you need the “Freerider” in the Pro version. If the priority is light weight and size, then your choice will be “Lite”. If you have not yet decided on your plans and just want a versatile backpack for winter mountains – please, there is an excellent reliable “Freerider”.
And in conclusion: it does not matter in what mountains and conditions your skating adventures will take place, whether it will be “Freeride in the death zone”, as in the case of partners of “Kant” Vitaly Lazo and Anton Pugovkin (http: // deathzonefreeride. com / ru) and descents from the famous murderous eight-thousanders. Or your option is freeride in the selfie zone: light rides in search of entertainment and new sensations, but you should always approach the choice of equipment as responsibly as possible. The Deuter Freerider in different versions is a good, reliable, very well thought-out backpack, and in terms of price and quality, perhaps the best of its kind. It is only important to remember that a backpack is just a part of the necessary equipment for free riding.Remember to dress and equip correctly, study the weather and the area where you want to leave your mark in the snow, remember the safety measures on the slope, and may luck be with you!
And below, for your convenience, we have collected all the main characteristics of the “Freerider” series backpacks in a table.
