PCA Online Training — At Home, Ltd

The State of Minnesota requires all PCA’s to take an online training course and pass a certification test.  The online training course and test are free, and you may take them as often as needed.  When you pass the test, Minnesota DHS will issue you a PCA Certificate.

2. To take the course, click on Training. On the next page, click on PCA and CFSS Worker Training.

3. To take the test, in the Event menu box, select PCA/CFSS support workers begin registering on 02/23/20, then click on Next-Register.

4. Complete the registration form. Make sure to provide a valid email address–your confirmation number and PCA Certificate will be sent to this email address. Click on Submit. An email with a link to the test will then be sent to the email address you provided.

How do I get a copy of my PCA Certificate?

When you pass the PCA Test, Minnesota DHS will send you an email with a link to your PCA Certificate.  Print one or more copies for your records.

40hr Personal Care Aide (PCA):
The 40hr Personal Care Aide program meets Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) curriculum for Home Health and Hospice and is also accepted by Virginia Department of Social Services for ‘direct patient care staff’ in licensed assisted living facilities.

The course content instructs participant in assisting residents with activities of daily living, patient transfers, nutrition, oral & personal hygiene with “on-the-job” hands-on training to complete program.

Certificate will be provided within 14 business days upon successful completion of course. DO NOT COUNT WEEKENDS OR HOLIDAYS.

What Kind of License Do I Need to Become a Personal Care Assistant?

How Do I Get Started?

The level of education required to become a PCA is typically set by the state in which you live. In most cases, a high school diploma is enough education to gain you employment in the field, with training coming mostly from hands-on experience throughout your career. Personal care assistant certificate programs are available at several career training schools and community colleges. Some programs are offered online by colleges or private organizations, with skills testing performed locally.

You could work on a contract basis through staffing agencies that specialize in home healthcare, or you may be hired directly by a personal services company. You could also participate in specialized training to qualify to work in a certain area, such as elderly or developmental disability care.

What National Certifications Are Available?

National certification is available to you through the National Association for Home Care and Hospice (www.nahc.org). The certification is mandatory if you work for a government-funded program, but it’s not restricted to those who work in these agencies. Earning this certification requires 75 hours of training, a skills demonstration and passage of a written test. How To Become An HHA In New York

Certified Home Health Aides are required to receive training through the university system, a certified HHA agency, or an HHA program. The New York State Education Department and/or the New York State Department of Health are the only organizations that can certify any HHA training programs in the state of New York.

The New York Department of Health regulates all Home Health Aides in New York and requires a minimum of 95 hours of total training, of which:

• 65 hours are classroom-based training consisting of 45 hours of lectures and 20 hours of “return demonstration”
• 30 hours are supervised hands-on clinical practice

Once you complete the certification program for HHA, a certificate and registry number is issued by the Home Care Registry and you are placed in a state database of certified HHAs.

If you leave employment with an agency or work in another state, your certification will lapse two years from the last day you worked at a home health agency in the state of New York.

DOH Provides Details on HHA/PCA Hybrid Training Program and Other Home Care Issues

LeadingAge NY met recently with Department of Health (DOH) representatives to learn more about the application process for Home Health Aide (HHA) and Personal Care Aide (PCA) hybrid training programs allowed under State guidance released last fall. Only three programs have been granted thus far. Four more applications are on hold, and 12 have been denied. LeadingAge NY, along with the Home Care Association of New York State (HCA) and the New York State Association of Health Care Providers (HCP), met with DOH to inquire about the slow approval process and the need to develop and reengage aide training programs shut down during COVID-19.

The Department communicated applicants’ need to strengthen their policies and procedures for their proposed hybrid training program applications, not rely on their traditional policies. There has also been much back and forth between DOH and applicants on the security of their online training systems and the verification process of trainees. DOH plans to issue more detail in guidance around these issues to help improve applications and the review process. Applicants should note that the application process also includes review of recent surveys, criminal history record checks compliance, and history of the applicant. The Department encourages applicants to engage administrators in training program development and application processes, not solely rely on nurse educators for this purpose. DOH also indicated that it will place another staff person on the application review process to speed up the approval process.

Associations advocated to DOH for the following: 

• Additional guidance on required policies and procedures, as this is one area that many applicants were asked to supplement. 
• Revise its hybrid training program policy so that entities with approved HHA Training Programs, but no approved PCA Training Programs, can submit applications for hybrid PCA Training Programs.
• Allow entities with existing approved PCA (in-person) Training Programs to submit applications for hybrid PCA Training Programs if their program has not received at least one reapproval after three years of operation.
• Permit students to make up classes by utilizing a video or recording of the class instead of requiring the nurse instructor to conduct a separate virtual make-up class for that student.

The meeting touched on several other issues as well. DOH will be looking at loosening some of the Health Emergency Response Data System (HERDS) reporting requirements for Certified Home Health Agencies (CHHAs) and Hospice. We will be providing DOH with our suggestions. They have indicated that they will remove some questions but will still require reporting three times a week.

The Department reiterated their recent comments to LeadingAge NY about the stalled application process for Licensed Home Care Services Agencies (LHCSAs). More information on that is available here. DOH will also be seeking information from agencies soon about their rosters and if they have policies in place to reinstate or terminate workers who are still inactive due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Citywide Nurse Residency program is being offered in partnership with the Greater New York Hospital Association, NYU Langone Health, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital to implement residency programs for staff at 24 participating hospitals and is the nation’s first City-led nurse residency. The residency program will provide newly-hired, first-time nurses with on-the-job training through a curriculum developed by Vizient/AACN that focuses on topics including ethics, decision making, clinical leadership, and the incorporation of research-based evidence into practice. The program also provides new nurses with support and mentorship proven to enhance nurse satisfaction, performance, and retention.

Medical Assistant for Modern Healthcare Delivery

The Medical Assistant (MA) for Modern Healthcare Delivery Training Program was developed in partnership with LaGuardia Community College and prepares participants with the clinical and administrative skills they need to work as MAs in today’s healthcare environment. The program includes 368 hours of classroom training as well as 100 hour paid internships at employer partner sites. Participants will be prepared to pass the National Healthcareer Association Clinical Medical Assistant, EKG, and Phlebotomy certification exams after the classroom training. Medical assistants in New York City earn approximately $35,000 annually.

We currently offer a bilingual track: Delivered in partnership with LaGuardia Community College and the Washington Heights Workforce1 Career Center, the bilingual track of this program is targeted toward English language learners interested in working as medical assistants. The NCLEX-RN Preparation for Foreign-Trained Nurses training program is delivered in partnership with LaGuardia Community College and its Welcome Back Center. The program prepares individuals who worked as nurses in their home countries to pass the NYS Registered Nurse licensing exam, the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Participants in this program will gain the English language and nursing skills they need to pass the exam and gain employment as Registered Nurses with hospitals and other employers. Registered Nurses in New York City make an average of $75,000 annually.

In this lesson we will look at function extraction. In practice, feature extraction is not only used to improve the storage space or computational efficiency of a learning algorithm, but it can also improve predictive performance by reducing the curse of dimensionality – especially if we are working with irregular models.

In particular, we will discuss Principal Component Analysis ( PCA ) an algorithm used to compress a dataset into a subspace of smaller features in order to retain most of the information it needs. We will investigate:

Principal Component Analysis ( PCA ) is an unattended linear transformation method that is widely used in various fields, primarily for feature extraction and dimensionality reduction.Other popular PCA applications include data analytics and signal noise elimination in stock market trading, and bioinformatics genome and gene expression analysis.

PCA helps us identify patterns in data based on the correlation between features. In a nutshell, PCA seeks to find directions of maximum variance in multidimensional data and projects them onto a new subspace with the same or smaller dimensions than the original.

Orthogonal axes ( main components ) of the new subspace can be interpreted as directions of maximum variance, taking into account the constraint that the axes of new objects are orthogonal to each other, as shown in the following figure:

In the previous figure, x1 and x2 are the original axles, and PC1 and PC2 are the main components.
