What are the key matchups for Notre Dame in 2021. How does the schedule compare to previous years. Can the Irish contend for another playoff spot with this lineup of opponents.
Overview of Notre Dame’s 2021 Football Season Outlook
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish enter the 2021 season in an intriguing position. Coming off two College Football Playoff appearances in the last three years, expectations remain high in South Bend. However, the team faces significant turnover, particularly on offense, as they look to reload rather than rebuild.
Key departures include quarterback Ian Book, several offensive linemen, and top receivers Javon McKinley and Ben Skowronek. Defensively, the Irish lose Butkus Award winner Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah among other key contributors. Despite these losses, Notre Dame’s 2021 schedule may provide an opportunity for the team to remain competitive at the national level.
Breaking Down Notre Dame’s 2021 Schedule Game-by-Game
Week 1: At Florida State (September 5, Sunday)
Notre Dame opens their season with a Sunday night primetime matchup in Tallahassee against Florida State. The Seminoles are coming off a disappointing 3-6 campaign in 2020, their first under head coach Mike Norvell. While FSU looks to improve in Norvell’s second year, this presents a winnable road test for the Irish to start their season.
- All-time series: Florida State leads 6-4
- Most recent meeting: Notre Dame won 42-26 in 2020
Week 2: Toledo (September 11)
The Irish return home in Week 2 to face Toledo from the Mid-American Conference. This continues Notre Dame’s recent trend of scheduling MAC opponents, following games against Bowling Green, Miami (OH), Ball State, and Western Michigan in recent years. The Rockets finished 4-2 in their abbreviated 2020 season.
- All-time series: First meeting
Week 3: Purdue (September 18)
A renewal of an old rivalry takes place in Week 3 as Purdue visits Notre Dame Stadium. The former annual matchup hasn’t been played since 2014, largely due to Notre Dame’s scheduling agreement with the ACC. Purdue has shown flashes of improvement under head coach Jeff Brohm but struggled to a 2-4 record in 2020.
- All-time series: Notre Dame leads 58-26-2
- Most recent meeting: Notre Dame won 30-14 in 2014
Week 4: vs. Wisconsin (September 25 – Soldier Field, Chicago)
The Shamrock Series returns in 2021 with a neutral site game against Wisconsin at Soldier Field in Chicago. This matchup was originally scheduled for 2020 at Lambeau Field but was postponed due to the pandemic. Adding intrigue to this contest is the fact that Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan transferred from Wisconsin, setting up a compelling storyline.
- All-time series: Notre Dame leads 8-6-2
- Most recent meeting: Notre Dame won 31-7 in 1964
Week 5: Cincinnati (October 2)
Perhaps the most anticipated non-conference game on Notre Dame’s schedule comes in Week 5 as Cincinnati visits South Bend. The Bearcats are coming off an undefeated regular season and could potentially be the highest-ranked team Notre Dame faces all year. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that new Irish defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman came from Cincinnati.
- All-time series: First meeting
Week 6: At Virginia Tech (October 9)
Notre Dame’s second true road game of the season takes them to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech. While Lane Stadium has a reputation as a difficult place to play, the Hokies have struggled in recent years, going just 19-18 over the past three seasons. Notre Dame won their only previous trip to Virginia Tech in 2018.
- All-time series: Notre Dame leads 2-1
- Most recent meeting: Notre Dame won 21-20 in 2019
Week 7: Bye Week
Notre Dame’s bye week falls at the exact midpoint of their regular season schedule. Under head coach Brian Kelly, the Irish have excelled with extra time to prepare, going 13-2 in regular season games following a bye week.
Week 8: USC (October 23)
Following their bye, Notre Dame welcomes USC to South Bend in a renewal of college football’s greatest intersectional rivalry. The Trojans are coming off a 5-1 season that saw them win the Pac-12 South before falling to Oregon in the conference championship game. This matchup always carries extra significance for both programs.
- All-time series: Notre Dame leads 49-37-5
- Most recent meeting: Notre Dame won 30-27 in 2019
Analyzing the Strength of Notre Dame’s 2021 Schedule
When examining Notre Dame’s 2021 slate, several factors stand out that could work in the Irish’s favor:
- Favorable early season slate: Opening with Florida State, Toledo, and Purdue gives Notre Dame a chance to work out any kinks with their new-look offense before tougher tests arrive.
- Limited true road games: The Irish play just two true road games in the first two months of the season, potentially easing the transition for new starters.
- Well-timed bye week: Having the off week fall at the midpoint of the season could prove beneficial for making second-half adjustments.
- Renewal of rivalries: Games against Purdue, Wisconsin, and USC should generate plenty of fan interest and motivation for the team.
However, challenges certainly exist within the schedule:
- Tough three-game stretch: Facing Wisconsin, Cincinnati, and Virginia Tech in consecutive weeks will test the Irish both physically and mentally.
- Potential trap games: Matchups against Purdue and Virginia Tech could prove trickier than they appear on paper.
- Late-season gauntlet: The back half of the schedule features several tough opponents that could make or break Notre Dame’s season.
Key Factors for Notre Dame’s Success in 2021
For Notre Dame to navigate this schedule successfully and contend for another playoff berth, several factors will be crucial:
Offensive Development
How quickly can the Irish offense gel with a new quarterback and revamped offensive line? The early portion of the schedule should provide opportunities to build chemistry and confidence before tougher tests arrive.
Defensive Reloading
Despite losing key players like Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, can new defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman maintain the high level of play Notre Dame has established on that side of the ball?
Winning the Big Games
Matchups against Wisconsin, Cincinnati, and USC will likely define Notre Dame’s season. Can the Irish rise to the occasion in these spotlight games?
Avoiding Letdowns
With several high-profile games on the schedule, it will be crucial for Notre Dame to maintain focus and avoid slip-ups against seemingly lesser opponents.
Potential Impact of Notre Dame’s 2021 Schedule on Playoff Chances
How Notre Dame’s 2021 schedule could affect their College Football Playoff aspirations:
- Strength of Schedule: While not the most daunting slate, wins over Wisconsin, Cincinnati, and USC would carry significant weight with the selection committee.
- Margin for Error: The relative lack of elite opponents means Notre Dame likely needs to go undefeated or have only one loss to remain in playoff contention.
- Late Season Momentum: Strong performances in November could leave a lasting impression on voters and the selection committee.
Comparing Notre Dame’s 2021 Schedule to Recent Years
When examining Notre Dame’s 2021 schedule in the context of recent seasons, several observations emerge:
Reduction in ACC Games
After playing a full ACC schedule in 2020 due to the pandemic, Notre Dame returns to its more typical independent slate in 2021. This means fewer conference games but a more diverse array of opponents.
Return of Rivalries
The renewal of series with Purdue and the continuation of the USC rivalry adds historical significance to the 2021 schedule that was lacking in 2020.
Neutral Site Showcase
The Shamrock Series game against Wisconsin at Soldier Field provides a high-profile matchup that has become a hallmark of Notre Dame’s scheduling philosophy in recent years.
Balanced Difficulty
Unlike some recent seasons where the schedule was notably front or back-loaded, the 2021 slate appears to have a more even distribution of challenging games throughout the year.
Impact of Notre Dame’s Schedule on Recruiting and Program Perception
Notre Dame’s 2021 schedule could have significant implications beyond just the win-loss record:
National Exposure
High-profile games against Wisconsin, Cincinnati, and USC ensure Notre Dame will remain in the national spotlight throughout the season, potentially aiding recruiting efforts.
Recruiting Footprint
Playing in various regions of the country (Florida, Midwest, East Coast) allows Notre Dame to showcase their program to prospects in key recruiting territories.
Program Prestige
Success against a schedule featuring traditional powers and up-and-coming programs could further cement Notre Dame’s status as an elite program in the current college football landscape.
Future Scheduling
How Notre Dame performs in 2021 could influence their approach to scheduling in coming years, potentially leading to more or fewer high-profile non-conference games.
Conclusion: Notre Dame’s Path Forward in 2021
As Notre Dame embarks on their 2021 campaign, their schedule presents both opportunities and challenges. While the loss of significant talent from the 2020 team raises questions, the structure of the schedule could allow for a smoother transition than might be expected.
Early season games provide a chance for new starters to acclimate before the difficulty ramps up in late September and October. If the Irish can navigate that crucial stretch successfully, they’ll be well-positioned for another run at the College Football Playoff.
Ultimately, Notre Dame’s ability to reload rather than rebuild will determine their fate in 2021. The schedule, while not easy, offers a path to success if the team can rise to the occasion in their biggest games and avoid letdowns against lesser opponents.
As always in college football, unexpected challenges will arise, and how Notre Dame adapts to those hurdles will likely define their season. But based on the layout of their 2021 schedule, the Fighting Irish have reason for cautious optimism as they pursue another memorable campaign.
Early look at Notre Dame’s 2021 football schedule
Nick Shepkowski
June 8, 2021 6:02 am ET
Notre Dame will enter 2021 in a strange position. They’re coming off two College Football Playoff appearances in the last two seasons but both of those ended with blowout losses to the likes of Alabama and Clemson.
Notre Dame also has to replace the lion’s share of its offense, starting with quarterback Ian Book and continuing onto the offensive line that was one of the nation’s best in 2020.
Furthermore, the two leading receivers from 2020 are gone in Javon McKinley and Ben Skowronek and will replaced by players who come in with hype but lack experience.
A mass amount of talent leaves Notre Dame defensively, too, none bigger of course than Butkus Award-winning linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.
With this overhaul of talent are the Irish doomed in 2021?
Possibly not. And one might think that’s because of a relief that comes in the form of their 2021 schedule.

Notre Dame at Florida State
September 5 (Sunday)
Florida State hasn’t been the same Florida State for a few years now and is coming off a 2020 campaign that saw them go just 3-6. Things should be better in year two under head coach Mike Norvell but this isn’t a trip to the home of a current powerhouse by any stretch.
Also worth noting is that this will be Notre Dame’s only true road game for over a month.

September 18 – Notre Dame Stadium
The former annual rivals haven’t played since the 2014 Shamrock Series game in Indianapolis as the Irish deal with the ACC has made yearly deals with much of the Big Ten impossible. Purdue has seen an uptick in talent in recent years but struggled to just a 2-4 mark in the short 2020 season.

Notre Dame at Virginia Tech
October 9 – Lane Stadium
Notre Dame plays just it’s second true road game of the season as they travel to Blacksburg, Virginia in early-November. Although seen as a difficult place to play, the Hokies went just 5-6 in 2020 and have gone just 19-18 over the last three seasons. Notre Dame vs. USC
October 23 – Notre Dame Stadium
USC is coming off a 5-1 season where comeback wins were the story of their season. The Trojans were improved in 2020 but showed some of their same recent flaws in a loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game. The best intersectional rivalry in college football returns after COVID-19 forced it to take a break in 2020.

Notre Dame vs. North Carolina
October 30 – Notre Dame Stadium
Notre Dame, North Carolina will have much to replace from a solid 2020 team. Coming off an Orange Bowl appearance the Tar Heels are getting to the point where they reload with talent instead of simply rebuild. Quarterback Sam Howell returns but star running backs Javonte Williams and Michael Carter are gone for the NFL, as is wide receiver Dyami Brown.

Nick Shepkowski
August 9, 2021 6:55 am ET
Notre Dame is looking for their third trip to the College Football Playoff in four seasons entering 2021 as the Irish enter the year looking not to rebuild, but to reload.
Can Notre Dame overcome a reworked offensive line, a new quarterback for the first time in seemingly forever, and significant replacements across the defense?
Time will give us the answer to those questions but the good news for Notre Dame is that the schedule is incredibly manageable despite having some tough foes.
Here’s how the week-to-week works out for the Fighting Irish in 2021:

In mid-January, the head of the Ministry of Education, Sergei Kravtsov, announced that the timing of the USE would be linked to the timing of admission campaigns in universities, so that graduates could apply to selected educational institutions. Early exams have been canceled this year.
At the end of February, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin made it easier to pass the final exams in 2021. Ninth-graders will be able to get a certificate by passing only the GIA in mathematics and the Russian language. For 11th-graders who do not plan to enter universities, the USE was replaced with the state final exam (GVE) in the same subjects.
Last year, the Unified State Exam was postponed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic, as a result, it was taken between July 3 and 23. All graduates received certificates without passing state exams; in order to enter universities, it was necessary to pass the Unified State Examination.

MOSCOW, October 11 – RIA Novosti. The main period of the Unified State Exam and the main state exam will traditionally be held from May 24 to July 1, the press service of Rosobrnadzor reports. Draft schedules for the unified state exam (USE), the main state exam (OGE) and the state final exam (GVE) for 2021 have been published for public discussion.” In accordance with the draft USE schedule, it is planned that in 2021 the exams will traditionally be held in three stages: early (from March 22 to April 16), main (from May 24 to July 1) and additional (from 3 to 17 September),” the message says. It is noted that the early and main periods of the Unified State Examination will begin with exams in geography, literature and chemistry. An innovation for 2021 is the division of the computer science and ICT exam in the main period into two days (18 and 19June), which is associated with the transfer of this exam into a computer form. In each of the examination periods, reserve periods are provided. In accordance with the procedure for the state final certification for educational programs of secondary general education, graduates of previous years take the USE in the early period and the reserve periods of the main period of the USE, graduates of the current year – in the main terms of the main period. Graduates who have coincided with the timing of examinations in individual subjects can also pass them in reserve terms. It is possible to take part in the Unified State Examination at other times only if there are good reasons, documented and the relevant decision of the state examination committee. Graduates who receive an unsatisfactory result in one of the compulsory subjects (Russian language or mathematics) can retake this subject on reserve days. Those who repeatedly received an unsatisfactory result in one of these subjects on a reserve day, or an unsatisfactory result in both compulsory subjects, can participate in the Unified State Examination in the Russian language and (or) basic level mathematics in the additional (September) period. “OGE for ninth grade graduates also it is planned to be held in three stages: early (from April 20 to May 14), main (from May 21 to July 1) and additional (from September 3 to 22),” the department notes. Applications for participation in the Unified State Examination and GVE-11 accepted until February 1, 2021, for participation in the OGE and GVE-9– until March 1, 2021. To help prepare for the exam, Rosobrnadzor is holding a series of online consultations during October with the participation of developers of examination materials, which are available on the department’s pages on the VKontakte social network and on YouTube.
