How do pre-game chants boost soccer team performance. What are the most effective motivational chants for soccer teams. Why is the delivery of chants more important than the words themselves. How can teams create custom chants that resonate with their players.
The Power of Pre-Game Chants in Soccer
Pre-game chants have become an integral part of soccer team culture, serving as a powerful tool to unite players and sharpen their focus before stepping onto the field. These motivational rituals go beyond mere words, tapping into the psychological aspects of team sports and performance enhancement.
Research has shown that rhythmic chanting can synchronize breathing patterns and heart rates among team members, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. This physiological alignment often translates into improved on-field coordination and communication.
Benefits of Pre-Game Chants
- Mental preparation and focus
- Team bonding and cohesion
- Increased energy and motivation
- Stress reduction and anxiety management
- Establishment of team identity and culture
Do pre-game chants actually improve performance? While scientific studies on this specific topic are limited, anecdotal evidence from coaches and players suggests that well-executed chants can indeed have a positive impact on team morale and individual readiness to compete.
Crafting Effective Soccer Team Chants
Creating a compelling pre-game chant involves more than just stringing together a few catchy phrases. The most impactful chants resonate with the team’s identity, values, and goals. They often incorporate elements of the team’s history, nickname, or shared experiences.
Key Elements of Powerful Soccer Chants
- Rhythm: A strong, steady beat that’s easy to follow
- Repetition: Simple, memorable phrases that build intensity
- Relevance: Content that speaks to the team’s unique identity
- Energy: A crescendo of volume and enthusiasm
- Participation: Opportunities for call-and-response or group unison
How can teams ensure their chants are memorable and effective? Involving players in the creation process can increase buy-in and enthusiasm. Additionally, practicing the chant regularly during training sessions can help it become second nature, allowing players to focus on the energy and emotion rather than struggling to remember the words.
Popular Pre-Game Chants for Soccer Teams
While the specific words of a chant may be less critical than its delivery, having a repertoire of tried-and-true options can provide a solid foundation for teams looking to establish their pre-game ritual. Here are some popular chants adapted from various sources:
1. The “Crazy Thugged Out” Chant
This chant builds intensity through repetition and increasing tempo:
“Crazy (what what),
Thugged out (what what),
Everybody rock this party
Thug it out (what what)”
Repeat three times, progressively increasing volume and speed.
2. The “What Type of Day” Chant
This call-and-response chant fosters team unity:
Captain: “What type of day is it?”
Team: “Great day to be alive!”
Captain: “[Team Name], how do you feel?”
Team: “Fired up!”
(Repeat “How do you feel?” / “Fired up!” exchange three times)
3. The “Clear Heads” Chant
Inspired by the TV show “Friday Night Lights,” this simple yet powerful chant focuses on mental preparation:
“Clear heads,
Open hearts,
Can’t lose…”
Customizing Chants for Your Soccer Team
While adopting existing chants can be effective, creating a unique chant tailored to your team can foster a stronger sense of identity and ownership among players. Here are some strategies for developing custom chants:
Incorporating Team Elements
- Use the team’s name, mascot, or colors in the chant
- Reference significant achievements or rivalries
- Include phrases that reflect the team’s playing style or philosophy
Collaborative Creation
Involve players in the chant-creation process through brainstorming sessions or friendly competitions. This can lead to more authentic and meaningful chants that resonate with the entire team.
Is it necessary to have a completely original chant? Not at all. Many successful team chants are adaptations or combinations of existing ones, tailored to fit the specific team’s identity and needs.
The Importance of Delivery in Pre-Game Chants
While the content of a chant matters, the manner in which it’s delivered can make or break its effectiveness. The energy, enthusiasm, and unity displayed during the chanting process often have a greater impact than the words themselves.
Elements of Effective Chant Delivery
- Volume: Gradually increasing volume builds excitement
- Tempo: Starting slow and speeding up can create intensity
- Body Language: Physical engagement amplifies the chant’s impact
- Eye Contact: Maintaining eye contact fosters connection among teammates
- Leadership: Strong leaders can guide the energy and timing of the chant
How can teams improve their chant delivery? Regular practice during training sessions can help players become more comfortable and synchronized in their delivery. Additionally, designating a chant leader or rotating the role can help maintain structure and enthusiasm.
Learning from Other Sports: The Haka Example
While soccer has its own unique traditions, teams can draw inspiration from powerful pre-game rituals in other sports. One of the most famous examples is the Haka performed by New Zealand’s national rugby team, the All Blacks.
The Power of the Haka
The Haka, a traditional Maori war dance, serves multiple purposes for the All Blacks:
- Intimidation of opponents
- Building team energy and focus
- Connecting players to their cultural heritage
- Creating a powerful spectacle for fans
While soccer teams may not adopt a war dance, the principles behind the Haka’s effectiveness can be applied to pre-game chants:
- Physical engagement: Incorporating movements or gestures
- Emotional intensity: Channeling passion and determination
- Cultural significance: Tying the ritual to team or local identity
- Visual impact: Creating a memorable experience for spectators
Can soccer teams create rituals as impactful as the Haka? While the specific cultural context of the Haka is unique, teams can certainly develop powerful pre-game routines that incorporate similar elements of physical and emotional engagement.
Integrating Chants into Team Culture
For pre-game chants to have a lasting impact, they need to be fully integrated into the team’s culture and routine. This involves more than just performing the chant before matches; it requires a holistic approach to team building and motivation.
Strategies for Chant Integration
- Introduce chants during pre-season training
- Use chants as part of warm-up routines in practice
- Encourage players to suggest modifications or new chants
- Incorporate chant elements into team mottos or slogans
- Create visual representations of chant lyrics for locker rooms
How can coaches ensure that chants remain meaningful over time? Regularly revisiting the purpose and impact of the chants with the team can help maintain their relevance. Additionally, being open to evolving chants as the team’s identity and goals change can keep the tradition fresh and engaging.
Measuring the Impact of Pre-Game Chants
While the emotional and motivational benefits of pre-game chants are often evident, quantifying their impact on performance can be challenging. However, teams can employ various methods to assess the effectiveness of their chanting rituals:
Assessment Strategies
- Player surveys: Gather feedback on perceived benefits and preferences
- Performance tracking: Compare game results with and without chants
- Physiological monitoring: Measure heart rate and other indicators during chants
- Video analysis: Observe body language and energy levels pre- and post-chant
- Focus groups: Conduct in-depth discussions about chant impact
Is it possible to definitively prove the effectiveness of pre-game chants? While establishing a direct causal link may be difficult, consistent positive feedback and observable improvements in team cohesion and performance can provide strong evidence of their value.
By thoughtfully crafting, delivering, and integrating pre-game chants into team culture, soccer teams can harness the power of this tradition to enhance motivation, focus, and unity. Whether adapting popular chants or creating unique rituals, the key lies in finding a approach that resonates with the team’s identity and goals. As teams experiment with different chants and delivery methods, they may discover that this simple yet powerful practice becomes an indispensable part of their pre-game routine, setting the stage for success on the field.
Pre Game Chants for your Soccer Team
Like teams from other sports, some soccer teams use pre-game motivational chants to get themselves in the zone and to prepare mentally for the game.
Why should you use pre game chants for Soccer?
Going into your soccer game in the right frame of mind is essential if you want to perform at your peak and do the very best you can.
Motivational chanting is proven to focus the mind and the repetitive nature of the words and rhythm train the mind to recall and focus on high-performance from soccer training and previous games you’ve excelled in.
The opportunity to develop a motivational chant for your soccer team is virtually limitless, although we have listed some of our favourite ones below.
It has to be said though that successful soccer chanting is about getting pumped up and focussing the mind for the game ahead. It is less about what you say and much more about how you say it.
Watch the guys from the UWF men’s soccer team deliver their pre-game motivational chant. This is done with feeling and gets every one of the players in the right frame of mind:
Popular Soccer Pre Game Chant
So, given that what you chant is of less importance than how you chant it, why not see if you can adapt any of these to suit your soccer team:
Crazy Thugged Out
“crazy (what what),
thugged out (what what),
everybody rock this party
thug it out (what what)”
(and repeat it about 3 times and get louder and faster every time – the first time is slow then speed it up)
What type of Day is it?
This is a popular football chant where everyone makes a circle around the captain and starts clapping slowly then eventually at a fast pace
Captain: What type of day is it?
Team: Great day to be alive!
Captain: Rebels (my teams name) how do you feel?
Team: Fired up!
Captain again: How do you fell?
Team: Fired up!
Captain: how do you feel?
Team: Fired up!
Captain: Breakdown ready?
Team: Set!
Captain: Ready?
Team: Set!
Captain: Ready?
Team: Set!
Captain: Ready?
Team: Set!
Captain: Ready ready ready?
Team: Set set set
Captain: Set set set
Team: *clap 3 times

We Shall Not be Intimidated
“We shall not!
We shall not be intimidated!
For we!
For we are the intimidators!
I said we shall not!
We shall not be intimidated!
For we!
For we are the initimidators!”

The Ultimate Pre Game Chant
To prove the point that it is not what you say but how you say it, and to demonstrate absolutely what getting “in the zone” looks like, let’s borrow from a different sport for a moment to finish.
The New Zealand ‘All Blacks’ are the best international rugby side to ever play the sport and before every fixture they perform the Haka, a traditional ancient Maori war dance on the field. This simultaneously strikes fear into the hearts of their opponents whilst also builds energy to get every All Black player mentally ready and in the zone so they’re ready to go to war on the field.
Watch this clip to see how a pre-game chant should be done and see if you can emulate this! I’m pretty sure that your opponents would rather take the next bus home than play a game with your team if you came up with something like this:

Cheers, Chants, Raps, and Poetry
Why am I including cheers, chants, raps, and poetry in a site about music?
Chanting has many of the benefits of song:
It uses rhythm and rhyme in an enjoyable way.
It provides patterns that can make learning easier.
It builds children’s confidence in oral language.
It can promote a sense of community, which is conducive to learning.
It provides a change of pace and mood to improve student motivation.
It offers opportunities for repeated readings, which build fluency.
It can serve as a writing prompt, offering students the chance to write new verses.
Kids love it!
Chants, raps, cheers, and poetry can be performed anywhere, even if your voice is as bad as mine! I encourage you to incorporate chanting into your lessons, and see how it builds energy for learning.

5 Motivating Mantras To Repeat When You Need An Extra Boost
Sometimes, the strongest inspiration comes from within. If you find yourself in need of a few encouraging words, look no further than these motivating mantras from Tone It Up health and wellness experts Karena and Katrina. Take a deep breath — you’ve got this!
Everyone has those days when you are not feeling super motivated to work out or you are not at your most confident — yes, even us! On those days, we turn to positive mantras. Reciting one of our favorite affirmations gives us an instant boost of inspiration, whether it’s for a workout, a business meeting, or anything else we need in our day. The more you give yourself little hints of positivity throughout the day, the stronger and happier you will be in every aspect of your life.
These are five of our absolute favorite mantras. We remind ourselves of these principles every day, and especially when we need an extra boost. We like to recite mantras in our morning meditation and during tough workouts. Pro tip: Add one of these quotes to your phone and set it as your screen saver. Every time you open your phone, you’ll get a dose of inspo!
And share your favorite mantras on Instagram to inspire others. You can find an entire support system with our community: @ToneItUp with the hashtag #TIUteam. Talk about motivation!
1. “Share. Love. Inspire. Sweat.”
This is our official Tone It Up slogan and we live by it! It encompasses our core values: health, community, positivity, and love. We constantly come back to this mantra.
2. “The moment you start believing that you can, you will.”
We always want to remind our community to have faith in themselves. Love yourself and take care of yourself, mind, body, and soul, because you deserve it!
3. “At first they’ll ask why you’re doing it, later they’ll ask how you did it.”
When we first started Tone It Up, everyone asked us, “why?” Why would we risk so much on an idea? But we knew in our hearts this was the right path for us and that it would be worth it. Don’t ever feel like you need to explain your dreams. Make them a reality, and then people will ask how you did it!
4. “You’ll never regret a workout or healthy choice that you make for yourself.”
All of these choices all day are a form of self respect and self love — and you’ll never regret doing something positive for yourself.
5. “Be the girl who decided to go for it.”
Sometimes what you’re most afraid of is the very thing you need to achieve your dreams. We believe that if you’re not a little bit scared, you’re probably not pushing your dreams to the next level. Be the person who decided to push through that fear and achieve things you never thought possible.
Classroom Cheers: An Active, Motivational Tool for Primary Teachers (54 Free Cheer Cards to Download)
Post Promise: Classroom cheers aren’t only fun, they are an effective tool for teachers. Today, I will share with you the key benefits of using Cheer Cards in your Primary Classroom, whether you are teaching in-person or virtually. Stick to the end to find your free set of cheer cards (in English and Spanish) created with the QUEEN of classroom cheers, Dr. Jean Feldman.
Hello, Teacher Friend! I am so glad you have landed here on this information-packed (and very GIVING) post about how to use classroom cheers to activate your students’ brains and motivate them during learning. I want you to think of Classroom Cheers not only as a cute thing that students love, but as a powerful tool to help achieve learning success. First, let’s get clear about what classroom cheers are and then we’ll
What are Classroom Cheers?
A classroom cheer is a quick, fun and effective moment of praise provided to students during their learning to motivate, energize and engage. Although a regular on-looker may perceive this as just plain fun, classroom cheers are very beneficial to students (and their Teacher) on many levels.
Cheers (sometimes called chants, claps, etc.) are very enjoyable for students because they are silly, repetitive and provide a sense of connection. Teachers enjoy this technique as well because of the perks it provides their classroom community, management and student focus.
What are the Benefits of using Classroom Cheers?
As mentioned, classroom cheers are beneficial for both the Students and their Teacher. Let’s take a closer look how at the ways this simple classroom routine can reap rewards in your classroom. Please note that these are only a few of the vast number of benefits you can expect to see after incorporating classroom cheers on a consistent basis.
Student Benefits
? Cognitive: Movement, chanting and singing are all ways to activate multiple areas (and hemispheres) of the brain. Due to the highly-involved nature of classroom cheers, students are reaping the benefits of increased brain function.
Executive Function & Self-Regulation: The Center for the Developing Child at Harvard University published an online guide that describes Executive Function & Self Regulation as “the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully.” When you think about the complexity of the senses that cheers require and their quick start & stop structure, it is safe to assume that classroom cheers are an effective way to encourage growht in this area. That same article goes on to explain that when children are provided opportunity to develop this function, “individuals and society experience lifelong benefits.”
?♀️ Physical: Practicing and executing classroom cheers can help your students become more coordinated and motivated to move. In a World where technology-screens require minimal physical activity, this quick and simple burst of movement-paired vocals is a refreshing moment for our little ones.
?Inclusion: When a classroom of learners join together to produce a silly, loud and encouraging cheer- everyone feels a strong sense of togetherness and inclusion. Just as a crowd joins together to celebrate a sports team, your students are joining together to support themselves and each other. That is a deeply powerful use of your time, Teacher.
Teacher Benefits
? Classroom Management: Utilizing classroom cheers effectively, can help you reach your management goals. Not only can cheers quieten a loud group of students, but they can also be used to transition between tasks or to simply re-focus in the middle of long, sometimes tedious lessons. Many teachers (myself included) also use cheers as a non-tangible classroom reward. During one of our LIVE webinar sessions (The Human Side of the Virtual Classroom), one teacher informed us that she used a cheer between each of her lessons as a motivational tool for student engagement.
? Community Building: If you’ve ever been on a competitive team (or been a supporter of one), you know the power of cheerful words of encouragement. Classroom cheers can have this same, powerful effect on your learners. When used properly, cheers can add to the atmosphere in your classroom and encourage that irreplaceable sense of community we all strive to create. When you get that right, all other aspects of your job become easier.
❤Teacher-Student Connection: When you initiate and participate in classroom cheers, this strengthens your students perception of you (their Teacher) as someone they know, like and trust. When we have established this with our students, we can truly teach them at an optimal level.
How to Use Classroom Cheers
Now that you know why you should use Classroom cheers, let’s decide that we want to use them at the MOST EFFECTIVE level in our classrooms. Here are some tips in achieving the optimal level of success with classroom cheers.
Step 1: Mindset Shift
Begin by convincing yourself that this tool is powerful enough to include in your daily routine. Review the benefits mentioned above and remind yourself of them often, especially in times when classroom cheers may seem like too much hassle.
Step 2: Preparation
Before getting too carried away, let’s get our ducks in a row. To prepare for the implementation of classroom cheers, you need to have a plan and you need to learn them yourself. This list of suggestions can help you:
✔ Choose Visuals (Cheer cards, posters, cheer sticks, etc.): Dr. Jean and I have prepared a free set of 54 cheer cards (included below) to help!
✔ Prepare/Store Visuals: Print, laminate and organize your visuals and store them in an easy-to-access spot. We placed our cards on a ring, but Dr. Jean also suggests placing them in a “CHEERios” box so students can draw one out and proclaim, “we have a whole box of cheers!”
✔ Practice the cheers yourself so you feel competent and capable when introducing them to students. Thankfully, Dr. Jean has created video demonstrations of most of her cheers. Check out the one included here, but If you need help with any more- find them here on her YouTube channel.
Step 3: Demonstrate & Practice
Now, it is time to share this special gift with your students! Yay! We suggest starting with one or two and practicing those with consistency until students have mastered them. This adds to their comfort level and therefore, their participation in your cheers. When those are mastered, add more when you see students are ready and revisit prior cheers often enough for students to remember them all.

The Human & the Holy’ Album
LeAnn Rimes shifts her focus into a new stylistic direction with CHANT: The Human & the Holy, a 12-track collection set for release on Friday (Nov. 20). Rimes dropped two of the songs off the album ahead of the full project’s release, beginning with “Sing Love Into the World.”
This song, like the rest of CHANT, grew out of Rimes’ practice of daily mantras and inspirational chants. It’s an important piece of the singer’s toolkit for physical, mental and emotional wellness, which she started building after checking herself into a treatment facility for depression and anxiety in 2012, one day after her 30th birthday.
Rimes has been open about her mental health struggles over the years, explaining that her early rise to fame took a toll on her from a mental standpoint. The singer shot to overnight success with “Blue” in 1996, at the age of 14. She also points to her parents’ divorce and the collapse of her first marriage to dancer Dean Sheremet in 2009 as contributing factors.
When she began treatment, the singer was only a year into her marriage to actor Eddie Cibrian, and she has said that the issues she faced then posed a challenge in their relationship — but after working through those struggles, her marriage is stronger than ever.
Having learned new skills including breathwork and meditation during that growth process, Rimes is now channeling her mantras and inspirational chants into music. On Thursday (Nov. 19), she released “My Heart,” the first song on CHANT‘s tracklist.
The singer will take her spiritually-infused new musical direction one step further on Nov. 30, when she launches her spiritual health and wellness podcast, Wholly Human. The first season of the podcast will introduce listeners to Rimes’ journey, share how she built her wellness toolkit and spotlight the community and teachers who helped her get to where she is today.
LeAnn Rimes, CHANT: The Human & the Holy Track List:
1. “My Heart”
2. “Be Still and Know”
3. “In the Stillness”
4. “Treasured”
5. Human/Holy”
6. “The Truth of Love”
7. “What I Cannot Change (Chant)”
8. “With My Hands”
9. “Set Me Free”
10. “Let the Light In”
11. “Christed”

The festive choir of the Minsk St. Elisabeth Convent took part in the VI International Festival “Academy of Orthodox Music”
23 july 2014
The festive choir of the Minsk St. Elisabeth Convent took part in the VI International Festival “Academy of Orthodox Music”, which was held for three weeks in St. Petersburg, Novgorod and on the island of Valaam.
75 participants from 19 countries and 22 cities of the world came to the city on the Neva to take part in many grandiose events – lectures, master classes, performances and concerts. As a rule, these are already established professionals – conductors, choir directors, teachers, leaders of creative groups, singers. This year there was even a representative of the clergy among the academics – a priest from Serbia.
The Academy of Orthodox Music has many unique concert programs performed in the best concert halls and churches of St. Petersburg, in the historical space of Yaroslav’s Court in Veliky Novgorod and on Valaam Island in Karelia. The St. Petersburg courtyard of Optina Pustyn, the Academic Chapel, the White Hall of the Sheremetev Palace – these and many other venues became the venue for concerts and divine services that introduced the participants to the diversity of world traditions of early Christian singing of Ancient Rus, Mount Athos, Serbia, Armenia, etc.
During the festival, the ancient chants of the Armenian Church were performed by the Women’s Ensemble of the St. Geghard Monastery from Armenia. Serbian church chants and folk songs were performed by the “Sveti Stefan Dechansky” Choir, which came to Russia for the first time. 80 choristers under the baton of the chief choirmaster of the Mariinsky Theater Andrei Petrenko.
On July 16, an obligatory reporting concert of the Consolidated Choir of the Festival took place under the direction of the best choir directors of Russia and abroad, at which Old Russian, Serbian, Byzantine chants, chants of the Valaam Monastery, spiritual verses, bell ringing were performed.
The final chord of the Academy sounded on the island of Valaam, where all the participants of the festival went. The singing tradition of the Valaam Monastery is the organic combination of various chants – Serbian, Greek, Georgian. It is here that academics fully demonstrate what they have learned during their three weeks of summer school.
On July 19, the combined choir of academics took part in the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in the Transfiguration Cathedral of the Valaam Monastery. The singers sang the chants of the Valaam Monastery under the direction of the choir director of the Valaam Monastery Festive Choir Alexei Zhukov and the choir director of the Minsk St Elisabeth Monastery’s Festive Choir, nun Juliana (Denisova).
Teachers who worked with academics on a daily basis shared their professional knowledge with them, demonstrating the peculiarities of different traditions of church singing. An invaluable role was played by attending lectures and master classes on icon painting, architecture and ancient Russian literature.
The structure of the Academy of Orthodox Music classes remains unchanged from year to year: after an intensive theoretical and historical course, rehearsals and creative master classes begin in various singing traditions – Russian, Byzantine, Serbian.
The Academy of Orthodox Music Festival is developing and does not stand still – the geography is expanding, new bands come, the concert poster invariably amazes with new discoveries.
The Academy of Orthodox Music is a unique project supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The cultural and educational mission of the festival is designed for the widest circle of listeners in Russia and abroad. The aim of the project is to popularize Russian culture and Orthodoxy as one of its main spiritual components. At the same time, the participant of the festival does not have to adhere to the Orthodox confession. To become a student of the Academy, a person must fill out a questionnaire and send a motivation letter to the organizers, in which he must indicate the purpose of his participation in the project. The student is paid for travel, accommodation in St. Petersburg, attendance at lectures, concerts, excursions and a trip to Valaam. The competition is approximately 3 people per seat.

90,000 Top 10 Music Albums Released in June 2020
June 2020 will be remembered for the phenomenon of two legends – domestic (Boris Grebenshchikov) and world (Bob Dylan). Both released new albums, sometimes very different from everything the musicians did before. There were also such performers, whom quarantine helped to “shoot”.The choice among recordings by academic artists turned out to be less diverse, not all planned releases took place. Traditionally, in our selection you will find music for every taste: dance, instrumental, vocal, secular, and even church.
KICK I
Artist: Arca
BEST ALBUM OF THE MONTH
Three years after the acclaimed album “Arca”, Venezuelan singer, songwriter and DJ Alejandra Gersi released the album “KiCk i”, delighting with a mixture of styles and generously seasoned with fit: in particular with Icelandic diva Björk and the famous Spanish woman ROSALIA.On the new album, Arca is reducing its signature heavy bass drum sound, beating evenly 4/4, to a whisper that oscillates around the flowing vocals.
Over the past three years, Gersey has fallen in love and at the same time gained confidence in her non-binary identity. If her previous album evoked associations with a sad sci-fi opera on a drifting space station, then KiCk i is already a live Instagram party, where Gersey appears unrestrained, mischievous and joyful.
Themes of gender fluidity, an ode to the self, a celebration of libido and psychedelic lyricism are expressed through a variety of styles: the release includes reggaeton, techno, heavy rock ballads, hip-hop, and, of course, the prevailing viscous electronics, transforming every element arrangements in a chaotic buzz. Yes, with all the variety, it turned out, rather, a pop-album, but it was made “according to the mind” – it is interesting to listen to it for the first time, and I want to turn it on again.

BEETHOVEN: SYMPHONY NO.9 & CHORAL FANTASY
Artists: Christiane Karg, Sophie Harmsen, Werner Güra, Florian Boesch, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Freiburger Barockorchester, Zürcher Sing-Akademie, Pablo Heras-Casado
BEST ACADEMIC MUSIC ALBUM
This album consists of two related works. First, a fresh and updated vision of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is proposed, and then – of its direct ancestor, a much earlier work by the composer – Choral Fantasy.Under the direction of Pablo Eras-Casado, exemplary work is demonstrated by both the Singing Academy from Zurich and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, which in no way prevented the interpretation of later music by the term “baroque”. Particularly noteworthy is the harpsichordist Christian Bezuidenhut, who masterly embodied one of Beethoven’s most outstanding talents – clavier improvisation.

“SIGN OF FIRE”
Executor: Boris Grebenshchikov
BEST RUSSIAN ALBUM
“You’ve played out …” – warns the bodhisattva of Russian rock in the most popular track of his release – “Basta Rasta”.And this phrase perfectly describes the atmosphere of the whole disc – it seems to be released from the impossibility of being silent. The album came out logo-centric, the word still plays a primary role in it, but this feature is more than compensated for by Mexican-American guitarist Omar Torres and multi-instrumentalist and producer James Hallowell, a man with incredible experience and many years of practice.
The success of the “Sign of Fire” lies not only in attracting foreign musicians. This Grebenshchikov practices regularly, for new sounds and new ideas he travels to Israel and Greece, Maghreb and Ireland, Montenegro and Cuba.Musically, he is undoubtedly a citizen of the world – but the meaning remains Russian. As Artem Lipatov accurately noted, the Russian beginning, Russian melos break through the musical form – through the Cuban rhythms in “My name is dust,” Russian sadness shines through, through the swanky reggae in “The Emerald Song” balalaikas break through, and in the half-toy dance rhythm “Won Babylon” is heard ditties – and the final instrumental piece “Ode” belongs to the classical Russian school of composition.

HOME TAPES
Artist: Oh Wonder
This is the cutest album of the month. London duo Oh, wonder decided to use mass quarantine as an aesthetic tool – they wrote, recorded, mixed and released a small record straight from home isolation. Here you will hear a track about a canceled birthday party, learn the story of how social distance affected romantic relationships, and sing along to the motivational “Don’t Worry” message.”Home Recordings” is an honest album where it is easy to believe that the authors sing about what they have experienced, finding charm in everyday life.

IN CHAINS OF GOD, VOL. 2
Artists: Fretwork, His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts, Magdalena Consort, William Hunt
Three years ago, the leading British performers of 17th century music – the ensembles Magdalena Consort, Fretwork and His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts – under the direction of William Hunt, released an extremely interesting CD of church works by the English composer Orlando Gibbons. In June 2020, a sequel was released – an equally meticulous and sensitive study of English sacred music, this time from the liturgical chants of William Blake to the religious hymns of Edward Hooper. The result is a work of pure, divine beauty.

WARPING YOUTH
Artist: Feng Suave
The new release of the psycho-pop group Fens Suave will plunge you into a soft, relaxing atmosphere. In just three years, the group was able to find a niche corner of popular music and give it charm. If their previous releases were such relaxants for listening in the bedroom, then in the new album, without losing their trademark wit in the lyrics, the musicians chose an unexpected topic for themselves – what a person sees when he looks back at the ups and downs of growing up. The perfect soundtrack for a lazy sunny day.

VERDI: OTELLO
Artists: Jonas Kaufmann, Federica Lombardi, Carlos Álvarez, Orchestra e Coro dell’Academia Nationale di Santa Cecilia, Antonio Pappano
This disc needs no long introduction. In 2017, the German dramatic tenor Jonas Kaufmann first appeared in the role of the passionate Moor Othello. Antonio Pappano was the conductor of that performance at the English theater “Covent Garden”. Three years later Pappano and Kaufman made this studio recording. For history. Pappano is attentive to details, strictly follows the score, convincing, both in lyrical scenes and whipping up dynamism. Kaufman is the best Othello of our time. Only the approach to the secondary parts can overshadow this record a little. In Verdi’s opera, neither Iago, nor even more so Desdemonna are secondary, but here they turned out to be like that, despite the efforts of the performers. Everything is built around and for one soloist. True, we have to admit – he deserves it.

Artist: Black Eyed Peas
Many people point out that after Fergie left the Black Eyed Peas, the band will no longer achieve its former greatness.Perhaps it is, but the team continues to try. The new album is like one protracted casting for the role of a new soloist. In the release, you will find feats with famous performers: from Shakira to Becky G. Hear collaborations with famous rappers. The result is a danceable, moderately high-quality album of typical summer music. It is unlikely that he will be remembered in a couple of years, but one season with him is quite possible. Summer without a beach is still all right, but summer without beach music would be too much.

LISZT: TRANSCENDENTAL ÉTUDES
Executor: Vadim Cholodenko
The cornerstone of piano literature — Liszt’s 12 Transcendental Etudes — broke the arms of many pianists. This is one of the few works that requires the performer to rise above the formidable technical difficulties of Liszt’s “exercises” in order to express their uniqueness and compositional sophistication. Vadim Cholodenko, demonstrating rare sensitivity and amazing virtuosity, shows Liszt – a poet whose soul rises and soars above the limited mechanics of fingers. After listening to this recording, you will understand why Liszt was called “Byron from the pianists”, attributed to him “Homeric epic power” and “Schiller’s dramatic intensity.”

ROUGH AND ROWDY WAYS
Artist: Bob Dylan
LIVE LEGEND
Finishing a selection of the best music releases in June is easy because you can end up with a legend. Bob Dylan drove his fans to the point that they are ready to go into ecstasy from whatever he does. And he achieved this very simply – he did not say anything new for the last 8 years. And in quarantine he suddenly released a whole series of dense and rich tracks full of thorny references to art, literature and pop culture. Sometimes the help of a Ph.D. may be useful to you to understand the texts.
The new album opens with the traditional and delicate ballad “I Contain Multitudes”, and ends with an almost 17-minute track that sounds unlike anything from Dylan’s work. This album will certainly go down in history. And just as it will delight old fans of the singer with the musical aesthetics of the 50s, it will shock them with an unexpected modern sound. Despite its grimness, Rough and Rowdy Ways claims to be Bob Dylan’s most interesting work of the past 40 years.

90,000 Y7 Studio: Build a Fast-Growing Business on Yoga (and truly hate it)
Sarah Larson Levy, 31, from New York, became an entrepreneur by accident.Frustrated by the disgusting level of teaching in yoga courses, she created her own studio Y7, which over time has grown into a whole network. The company became part of a growing area of fitness boutiques (this is the name for highly specialized studios designed for a small number of visitors). Today, the network includes 10 studios in New York and Los Angeles, but next year it should expand by at least two more cities. This year Y7 was included in the list of the 5 thousand fastest growing US companies according to the American Inc.Levy told how she opened her first studio out of spite and why she still teaches classes herself.
In Y7 studios, by candlelight, to the bursting hip-hop speakers, young townspeople adopt ancient Indian poses, and infrared heaters help them sweat. All this creates a club atmosphere, but, according to Levy, the severity of the lessons themselves contributes to the rapprochement of her guests. “It creates a sense of camaraderie,” she says. “You are going through a difficult workout together.”
Y7 has hit one of the biggest trends of our time – the flourishing of fitness boutiques. While the number of visitors to traditional multipurpose gyms has declined dramatically, the growth of mono chains such as Club Pilates (owned by Xponential Fitness), Soul Cycle, Pure Barre and Orangetheory is in double digits, despite the fact that in a mono studio the cost of one lesson (usually $ 15-35) is higher than the monthly cost of training in some sports clubs.
90 199 employees 90 200 in the company.
ranked in the list of the fastest growing US companies, according to Inc.
growth of companies in 3 years.
90 199 million 90 200 – income in 2017.
Levi swears that she never imagined that she would ever become a “yoga tycoon.”Before becoming an entrepreneur, she worked as a clerk in the fashion industry. “It actually happened because I hate yoga,” Sarah admits.
The main motivation for the entrepreneur was the worthless yoga classes that she attended in the summer of 2013 after moving from Michigan to New York. Too often there were endless chants and incomprehensible terminology. But most importantly, there were bright lights and mirrors that made her feel ashamed of her body. The irritation reached the limit when the instructor spent almost half of the 60 minutes of study time selling her yoga retreat in Bali. “I thought: you’re kidding me! I actually paid money for the lesson, ”the entrepreneur recalls.
Levy was so pissed off that she scoured Craiglist for a cheap place to hold small classes with instructors ready to teach her lessons. She had no intention of making money – she just wanted to find a couple of like-minded yogis to help cover the costs. And those first weekend lessons in an abandoned recording studio proved so popular by the fall of 2013 that Levy confidently signed a monthly lease. Her first small studio is 28 sq. m – barely accommodated 8 people.
Among the regulars at the studio was Mary Biggins, co-founder of the ClassPass service (now Classtivity; allows users to visit different fitness clubs). Biggins signed Levy as one of her first partners, and by April the hall was so packed that more space was needed. So Levy realized that she had created a real startup. In January 2015, Y7 (a reference to the seven body chakras) opened its first pop-up studio in Manhattan. And soon Levi and her husband left work – a “complete namaste” came in their life.
Where did the fashion for fitness boutiques come from
The USA is experiencing a boom in boutique fitness companies. Anthony Geisler, CEO of Xponential Fitness (includes Club Pilates, CycleBar, StretchLab and Row House) sees 3 key drivers of this trend: uniformity, community and constraints.Consistency is at the heart of the appeal of any network, he says: customers need to understand what to expect from the business wherever they go. Geisler himself, a Starbucks fanatic, ensures that in all of his studios, little things like the restroom look (and the free socks at Club Pilates) are exactly the same.
According to Geisler, people in training want to feel like they are in a cool bar or nightclub. Membership in a mono studio with a single sport pays more than a full-service gym because of the sense of intimacy.“Dog owners go to dog parks. Why? – asks Geisler. – Because everyone in the dog park has this same dog. We, like animals, love to go to the watering place together. ”
Another reason for the incredible appeal of mono studios is size. The classrooms are small, and when the room is crowded it is easy to ask for $ 25 or $ 35 for a seat. “Take the old nightclubs. People stood in line for hours, says Geisler. “Everyone wanted to be a part of it.”
Both entrepreneur and client
Levy is constantly making sure that the feeling of belonging and togetherness does not leave the visitors of Y7 studios.“People are hungry for unity, and in traditional halls it is not available,” she says.
A few months ago, Levy herself would have greeted you at Y7 Studios. At first, she did everything herself – from working at the reception and paying salaries to hired instructors to developing studio design. “Last year I worked my last hours at the front desk,” she says. “My COO said you can’t do this.” After receiving private investment in late 2016, the company hired 300 employees, and now Levy no longer needs to answer calls herself (unless she herself wants to).
But Levy leads the group on his own. It is important for her to evaluate the enterprise through the eyes of clients – so as not to put their interests below the interests of the company. “I am the client,” she says. “And for me this is the advantage of our business.”
Levy herself takes 4 lessons per week at Y7. She’s also a regular at New York Pilates and ModelFit. Levy the entrepreneur cannot believe that Levi the client has succumbed to the wave of fitness mono studios. “If I was told that I would pay $ 35 for a workout,” she says, “I would laugh in your face.”
Who else is riding the new trend?
Peloton
The company sells high-tech exercise bikes and live lessons to those who don’t have time to get to the studio. Founder John Foley has worked for IAC, Barnes & Noble and Barry Diller’s Evite. In 2011, he could not get into a cycling class: in Manhattan, where he lived, the SoulCycle and Flywheel classes with popular instructors were booked a week in advance. “I thought: if 2,000 people want to get here, but only 50 get there, it’s screaming about distributed technology,” he says.
Fowley had a hard time convincing venture capitalists of the demand: most of the investors he pitched didn’t understand why pedaling at home rather than going on a long ride in the countryside as their lifestyle allowed. But Foley did collect the money he needed, and the rest was relatively easy. Since 2017, the number of Peloton subscribers giving $ 39 per month has increased from 100 thousand to 600 thousand people – at a price of $ 1995 per bike.
Fowley had no doubts that Peloton would be a hit, but he wondered at the strength of the community that had grown up around the studio. Users, competing with each other on the leaderboards, take the same lessons, have private video chats, or send each other electronic hi-fi.Many chat in groups on Facebook, where they make appointments in New York at the Peloton Studios for live lessons.
But most cyclists take on-demand classes more often than studio lessons. Netflix users are used to using the service “where they want, when they want,” Foley says; With the proliferation of quality home fitness options, fixed-schedule sports lessons are a thing of the past. Peloton has already created its second product, a smart treadmill that can be used for group runs or as part of a blended workout.
Yoga International
Yoga International, a print magazine from the mid-1990s, changed radically in 2013: “We didn’t want to come to terms with the status quo,” says CEO Todd Wolfenberg. The magazine has evolved into a platform for online subscription yoga classes. Yoga International today has over 300,000 members, many of whom pay $ 14.99 per month to access everything from introductory courses to videos of coaching mentors. The age of the platform’s users is 35-50 years old (mono studios aim at younger ones), it attracts people from rural areas, where yoga studios are in short supply. Yoga International fitness programs lean towards low-intensity therapy and mindfulness training.
Wolfenberg believes that yoga instruction for home practice attracts clients who feel excluded from mainstream yoga culture – people who, like Levy, feel terrible in the midst of all these mirrored studios.“Take a look at yoga magazines – all skinny white girls on the cover,” he says. In its media and marketing, Yoga International carefully presents a wide selection of physiques and ethnicities to show that this is a completely new kind of yoga for everyone.
GymGuyz
The brainchild of Josh Yorke, a personal trainer-turned-entrepreneur, with his manic energy as a motivational speaker in the spirit of Tony Robbins. “I have more energy than anyone you’ve ever known,” he says.
In 2008, Yorke was living with his parents and trying to build his own training business when a client told him, “It would be great if you came to my house, but I don’t have any equipment.” Idea! Josh got behind the wheel of a van, spent the last $ 1,000 and loaded the car with weights, elastic bands and other gear. “We trained in parks, swimming pools, pizzerias, parking lots,” he recalls.
In 2014, GymGuyz launched a franchise.Today they have over 200 locations in 30 states. Low overhead – van and 365 assorted gear – has made GymGuyz one of the fastest growing franchise brands in the US.
