A Well-Rounded Approach
St. Catherine’s Academy provides the structure and values you expect from an elementary military school. But that’s just one aspect of our well-rounded program. As a Catholic school with a military tradition, we also offer outstanding academics, spiritual development, and a range of extracurricular activities.
Academics at SCA are characterized by small classes and individualized attention. At the elementary level, the average class size is just 11 students. This means students receive the personal attention they need to succeed and reach their potential. SCA also offers a variety of individualized options for advanced students and for those who need extra support.
Our all-boys environment is especially beneficial to elementary age students. Research shows that the learning differences between boys and girls are greatest among young students.
Dominican Formation Program
St. Catherine’s Academy is a Catholic school rooted in a school-wide Dominican formation program that emphasizes community, ministry (service), study, and prayer. These Dominican Pillars are the foundation for a faith-filled community where students of all religious backgrounds are able to grow in their personal spirituality. In addition to daily prayer, weekly Mass, and classroom religious instruction, students find that faith applies to all aspects of life.
Boarding School Program
Boarding options are available for students in 4th – 8th grade. Our boarding program is designed especially for younger students. This means 24-hour supervision, lots of planned activities, and plenty of support as students live away from home for the first time.
Students live in large dormitories of about 15 students. Each dorm is staffed by a resident care provider who helps with laundry, plans dorm activities, and provides nurturing and guidance.
We offer two boarding programs. In our 5-day boarding program, students stay on campus from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon and return home on the weekends to spend valuable, quality time with family. In our 7-day boarding program, students stay on campus throughout the year except for the winter, spring, and summer breaks. On weekends they participate in field trips and on-campus activities.

As you begin to draw a picture of the kind of school which you would like your child to attend, you just might discover that the structured environment and leadership training military schools are well known for is just what you are looking for.
So, what about military schools? When might you consider sending your son or daughter to a military school? Let’s settle a couple of things before we proceed: military schools are not places you send a child with discipline or other issues. They are not reform schools or schools for troubled youth. If a professional such as a psychologist or psychiatrist recommends your child attend a therapeutic school, you will have plenty of options for that purpose. Military schools are genuine institutions of learning with a specific focus: military training. Second, military service is not required when you attend a military high school. If your child decides that military service is a career path which she wants to pursue, then a military school will have given her a good start.
If the following are things you are looking for in a private school, maybe a military school is right for you. Check out the websites. Watch the videos on YouTube. View the photos on Flickr. Follow military schools on Facebook. Then be sure to visit the schools and see for yourself.
In life just about anything worth doing well requires lots of discipline. Discipline takes hard work, persistence, stamina, and time. In an era when instant gratification seems endemic, good old-fashioned discipline lays a solid foundation for success in adult life. Discipline evolves into a pattern of self-discipline. After several years of training, your child will know what she has to do to accomplish her objectives. Military schools serve up discipline as regularly as they serve breakfast.
“Whether learning in the classroom, completing community service, performing on the athletic field, or interacting socially, we always expected our cadets to do the right thing – acting with respect, responsibility, honor, and generosity. A Missouri Military Academy diploma means that a student has gone beyond the mastery of the subjects necessary to succeed in college and possesses the self-discipline and values that will help him succeed in all aspects of life.”
Structure goes hand in hand with discipline. Structure and discipline sound rigorous and they are. If your child is accustomed to doing whatever she wants whenever she wants to do it, the structure which a military school offers will take some getting used to. Think of structure as the organization which allows discipline to produce results and you are beginning to understand how military schools work. Understanding how to attain goals and results begins with developing basic skills. If you are beginning to think that there is perhaps a bit too much rigidity in all of this, just remember that discipline and structure are the frameworks for growth. Your child’s growth.
Military schools can give your child’s life purpose and direction. A key component of military schools training is leadership. Leaders are fashioned one step at a time. There are many pieces to the leadership picture. Military schools are very proficient at developing leadership skills. Leadership is not only about leading a platoon into a win at war games. Leadership involves character, judgment, compassion, and trust. You can understand how learning how to lead can be beneficial in just about any endeavor. It’s all about managing people. Military schools teach these valuable lessons effectively and at an impressionable age.
Culver Academies expresses this sentiment succinctly in their description of their leadership curriculum:
“The leadership curriculum, for both boys and girls, explores the core values of effective leadership – good communication and listening skills, group dynamics, consensus building, decision making, goal setting, negotiation, motivation, and ethics.”
Many military schools offer JROTC or Junior Regular Officer Training Corps. This is a Federal program sponsored by the United States Army. The Army cannot recruit high school students. So it uses the JROTC program to expose young people to the possibilities and potential of military service with the hope that some of them might choose to become part of the armed forces in later life. Needless to say, military schools are committed to the success of their graduates. If a military career is part of your child’s plan, a military school makes perfect sense.
Service to country is a high-minded concept. Military schools get to the heart of the concept with community service and other programs which teach their students compassion and concern for the welfare of others. Service to country has kept our nation free for hundreds of years. Patriotism and the love of our nation are part of the DNA of any military school. Your child will benefit from that as well.
It is worth noting that military schools know what it takes to secure places in our nation’s military academies:
From Admiral Farragut Academy’s website:
“Every year, the officer in charge of our Naval Science Program has the authority each year to make the following senior nominations:
6 nominations to the U. S. Naval Academy
5 nominations to the U.S. Air Force Academy
3 nominations to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point
Normally, to receive an offer of appointment to the Naval (or another military) Academy, an applicant must obtain a nomination from an official source such as a U.S. Representative, two U.S. Senators, and the Vice President of the United States, who are only permitted to nominate a few students each year from their entire state. Thus, the chance to be nominated by our officer in charge–from only a pool of other qualified Admiral Farragut students–is an outstanding advantage for those students interested in pursuing a military college career.”
The graduates of the 42 military schools in the U.S. matriculate to colleges and universities at home and abroad. Academic training and good results are the primary objectives of military schools. Always have been. Always will be. Most military schools think of themselves as college preparatory schools. That’s how important academic preparation is. Strong leaders need solid academic training too. Military schools do their very best to provide that.

How to Choose the Right One
For those of you who are considering a boarding school for your child, don’t forget to look into the Lone Star State! Texas not only has some of the best year-round weather in the country and has some of the best colleges in the nation!
Texas is a big state, so there are plenty of boarding schools to choose from. This article will first break down your Texas boarding school options and then list some Texas boarding schools that might be perfect for your son or daughter.1. College Prep or Therapeutic
There are basically two broad categories of Texas boarding schools to choose from: college preparatory (or college prep) and therapeutic.
College Prep: By the very name, this type of boarding school indicates that they prepare students for the rigor of college coursework. They typically expect all their students to take college-level coursework, such as Advanced Placement (AP) and dual enrollment courses, in their junior and senior year of high school. They are normally more selective in the admissions process, possibly requiring testing and interviews before acceptance. Lastly, these boarding schools historically boast a very high college acceptance rate for graduates.
Therapeutic: This type of boarding provides specialized structure and supervision for students with emotional and behavioral problems, substance abuse problems or learning difficulties. While some of these schools can be college-preparatory, the mission of therapeutic boarding schools is primarily to help boys and girls develop the mental tools to overcome self-destructive behavior and successfully deal with any difficulties or setbacks in life.2. Military, Religious or General
Most college-prep boarding schools in Texas fall into one of three particular models: military, religious and general.
Military: Military boarding schools maintain a more regimented and disciplined environment. These schools are normally staffed with a number of former military members that provide a positive example of the structure and leadership skills that military training can bring to a young person’s life. A military boarding school is ideal for students who are intelligent but unmotivated. Students who attend these schools are not expected to enlist in the military; on the contrary, they are expected to attend college.
Religious: Religious boarding schools normally teach students about a particular religion and encourage them to practice it in their personal lives. These schools are normally staffed with clergy members and faculty with faith-based values. A religious boarding school is best suited for a boy or girl who comes from a strong, faith-based household or is seeking spiritual direction for his or her life. Students who graduate from these schools are also expected to go to college and are not pressured to enter the ministry field.
General: Unlike military or religious boarding schools, general boarding schools dedicate nearly all learning hours to the core academic curriculum. They are similar to Texas’ best public schools except for the large student population. Many of them, however, specialize in certain subjects or careers, such as STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Though they concentrate on the scholastics, these schools typically offer weekly religious services and some even offer a Junior ROTC unit. A general boarding school is usually best for a high achieving student with a very clear college and/or career goal.
Keep in mind that no matter which model they follow, most college-prep boarding schools are generally very good about limiting distractions and filtering the negative influences that are often found in public schools, such as violence, drugs, etc.3. Co-ed or Single-sex
No matter which type of Texas boarding school is best for your son or daughter, you still have two basic options left: Co-educational (or co-ed) or single sex.
Co-ed: The major advantage of a co-educational boarding school is that it is the most like real life. In the modern world, most men and women must interact with each other and work together. The disadvantage is the distraction of the opposite sex. Attempts to impress the opposite sex or frequent dating can shrink study time and lower a student’s GPA.
Single sex: The main advantage of a single-gender boarding school is that it eliminates the distraction of the opposite sex. Not only can students better focus on their studies, class participation is usually stronger because no one has to worry about embarrassing himself or herself in front of the opposite sex with a wrong answer. The disadvantage is that teenagers may not fully develop their social skills.Researching Boarding Schools in Texas

Military School for Troubled Teen Girls
Military schools for troubled teen girls may seem like the answer for parents who are frustrated and worried. However, for teenagers who are dealing with overwhelming feelings of frustration, anger and even fear, there are other better options for them. When dealing with emotional, mental health or behavioral challenges, teenagers often act out and engage in reckless behavior. Many parents simply feel that a little discipline will help their teen shape up, but that isn’t really appropriate for long-term healing. Havenwood Academy offers parents an alternative to military school for troubled teen girls and promises a better experience for every family member.

What Exactly Is Military School for Troubled Teen Girls?
In order to understand more about military schools for teens, parents need to figure out a few different definitions that apply to different teen help and therapy programs. In the old days, bad boys were shipped off to military school in hopes that the harsh discipline would suppress all rebelliousness. These schools were strict and cared more about conformity than any kind of long-term success. Today, military schools are private boarding schools that prepare teens for an officer’s life in the armed forces, and don’t really have any kind of therapeutic component. Proper military schools are no place for troubled teens.
Military schools and boot camps are also names given to teen help programs that have a certain approach to behavior modification. These are often run in a pseudo-military style and use lots of physical activity, punishments and sparse surroundings to try to convince teens that their rebellious ways are not in their best interest. Again, there is no therapeutic or academic component to these programs, and therefore they don’t really have much long-term effect on a troubled teen.
Therapeutic boarding schools and residential treatment centers for teens have proved successful in almost every area of a troubled teen’s life, from mental health to academics to self-esteem and more. Instead of military schools for girls, parents should look to therapeutic boarding schools .
More on Therapeutic Boarding Schools
The best part about therapeutic boarding schools when compared to military schools for girls is that they have the whole package that parents are looking for. Managed by attentive staff and focused on helping girls to heal, therapeutic boarding schools are in the business of getting teens to become the drivers in their own journey toward recovery. In a supportive, caring and structured environment, teen girls become excited about their futures and work hard to meet their personal goals.
Here are just a few things about therapeutic boarding schools that benefit teens:
- Qualified Staff: From administration to therapists to mentors and everyone in between, the staff at a therapeutic boarding school should be properly licensed and certified, plus have experience working with teens.
- Accredited Academics: An accredited therapeutic boarding school will be in compliance with the certain high school regulations, and have certified teachers instructing the students. Depending on the program, students may even be able to earn a diploma at the therapeutic boarding school.
- Therapeutic Recreation: Not all therapy should be talk therapy, and the most successful therapy schools include a range of different therapy activities, like equine therapy, art therapy, sports and outdoor recreation therapy and more. It boosts self-esteem and helps girls make breakthroughs in key areas of healing.
- Community Service: Most therapeutic boarding schools house students in dorm-style rooms or family group homes, giving girls a chance to work together on laundry, cleaning, cooking, budgeting, leadership, teamwork and more.
- Transition Plans: Eventually, teen girls at therapeutic boarding schools need to transition to the real world, whether with family or on their own. A good school will have a clear transition plan where teens learn how to be independent and navigate the adult world.
Let’s face it—military schools for girls don’t have any of these components, and are generally not the best place for teens with emotional, mental health or behavior obstacles. Parents who do the research quickly come to discover that therapeutic boarding schools and residential treatment centers are the best type of long-term help for their teenage girls.

Suvorov military schools – RIA Novosti, 03/01/2020
The name “Suvorov” schools was given in honor of the Russian commander Alexander Suvorov. Until October 1917, this name was given to the cadet corps, which was located in Moscow since 1914.
In 1943, eleven Suvorov schools were created, and in 1944 six more.
The task of the schools was to prepare boys for military service in the officer rank and give them a general secondary education.
The period of study at the Suvorov schools was seven years, they accepted boys who had reached the age of ten.
In the 1950s, the military training program at the Suvorov schools was significantly expanded. If in the first years of the existence of schools, it consisted of drill training, the study of the material part of small arms and general military regulations, then from October 1957, the foundations of military-technical training were added to these disciplines. This subject acquainted the Suvorovites with the principles of operation of jet weapons, the basics of radio engineering, electronics, nuclear physics, with the device and operation of a car and communication facilities.
Along with an increase in the level of military professional training of the Suvorovites, the orders of the Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces required the graduates to be fluent in foreign languages. Since the 1956/1957 academic year, schools began to be transferred to a curriculum that provided 2000 hours for learning a foreign language. This made it necessary to increase the period of study at the SVU by one year and to equip the schools with officers who know a foreign language. In 1962, an additional (for those wishing to) exam for the qualification of a military translator was introduced for the Suvorov graduates.
In the 1960s, some of the Suvorov schools were disbanded, and in 1963 they began to be staffed by 14-year-old boys with an eight-year education. They established a three-year study period. In 1966, the foundations of ethics and the foundations of aesthetics were additionally introduced into the education system, which were closely linked with the extracurricular work carried out by company commanders, officer-educators and teachers of other disciplines.
In 1969 another innovation followed – the Suvorov schools switched to a two-year period of study (grades 9-10). Corresponding changes have been made to the curricula and programs. By the end of the 1970s, there were 8 Suvorov schools: Kazan, Kalinin, Kiev, Leningrad, Minsk, Moscow, Sverdlovsk and Ussuriysk.
In the 1980s, the Suvorov schools continued to improve their activities, develop various forms of classroom and extracurricular activities, and build up the existing pedagogical potential. After the collapse of the USSR, many of them became the leading educational centers for the preparation of young men for service as an officer in the system of national military education.
Currently, minor citizens of the Russian Federation under the age of 15 years old who graduated from 8 classes of a general educational institution in the year of admission can enter the Suvorov schools with a three-year study period, who have a direction from the personnel of the relevant internal affairs body of the Russian Federation or the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia at the place of registration candidates fit for health reasons, meeting the requirements of professional psychological selection.
Candidates for training who have studied a foreign language in a general education institution are selected to the Suvorov schools.

Suvorov military schools were created in accordance with the resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR and the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks dated August 21, 1943 “On urgent measures to restore farms in areas liberated from German occupation “for the purpose of organizing, training and educating the children of soldiers of the Soviet Army and the Navy, partisans, Soviet and party workers, workers and collective farmers who died during the Great Patriotic War.
The name “Suvorov” was given in honor of the Russian commander A.V. Suvorov.
In 1943, eleven Suvorov schools were created, and in 1944 – six.
In 1944, the Gorky Suvorov Military School was also founded. On October 1, 1944, the Deputy Head of the Directorate of Military Educational Institutions of the TUK NKO USSR Guard Major General Nikitchenko presented the Banner to the Suvorov School. This day became the birthday of the Gorky (since August 1956 – Moscow) Suvorov military school.
On October 1, 1944, the school opened its doors to five hundred pupils aged from 7 to 14 years old. The first head of the school was Major General K. A. Zheleznikov, a participant in the Great Patriotic War, holder of many military awards.
Military officers, defenders of their socialist homeland, became commanders of companies, officers-educators. And most of the pupils of the first enrollment were orphans, sons of regiments, children of parents who fought at the front against the Nazi invaders.
On July 24, 1945, 210 pupils of the Gorky Suvorov School, as part of the combined regiment of the Suvorovites, participated in the Victory Parade on the Red Square of the capital.
Heads of the Moscow SVU:
– Major General Leonid Ivanovich Vagin, 1956-1961;
– Colonel Grigory Fedorovich Muslanov, 1961-1963;
– Major General Sergei Stepanovich Savchenko, 1963-1965;
– Major General Vasily Nikolaevich Fedotov, 1965-1973.
In August 1956 the school was relocated to Moscow, in Fili, where the regiments of Bagration once stood.Since November 1957, the Moscow Suvorov Military School has taken part in all military parades that took place on Red Square. Years passed, the system of training Suvorovites changed.
In 1964, the school switches to a three-year training program. Boys began to be admitted here after the 8th grade at the age of 15-16. In 1991, the school was relocated to another district of Moscow – to Babushkinsky. I had to rebuild the barracks fund, classrooms and gyms, a library for myself.A lot of work has been done in 6 years. Now the school has a modern educational and material base, good living conditions, two gyms with sophisticated simulators, a television center, and a unique library fund. A stationary field training center has been equipped in the Moscow region. Pupils of the school have every opportunity for harmonious development and self-improvement.
The educational process at the Suvorov School is not only training, but also the upbringing of a person. For three years, educational work, varied in content and form, has been carried out, aimed at instilling in the Suvorovites a sense of pride and responsibility for belonging to the Armed Forces of Russia, readiness to enter the universities of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and subsequent service in the officer rank, loyalty to military duty. For fifty-three years, the Moscow Suvorov Military School trained and graduated about nine and a half thousand Suvorov soldiers. Of these, 112 Suvorovites graduated from the SVU with a gold medal and 237 – with a silver medal.
