Guide to Summer Camps In and Around Mid-Michigan

Since 1915, YMCA Camp Copneconic has been a staple of excellence in the region. Their focus continues to be on creating and strengthening lasting friendships, developing skills, providing genuine and high-quality programs, and building character.

Camp Copneconic is nestled on 125-acre Lake Copneconic, which serves as the perfect backdrop for a long list of amazing adventures including the high ropes course, zip lines, horseback riding, waterfront activities and more. As a year-round camp and retreat center, YMCA Camp Copneconic offers the best variety of programs tailored to groups of many sizes and purposes. 2021 Safety Information From Camp Copneconic:

YOUTH AND FAMILIES CAN FEEL COMFORTABLE KNOWING THAT THEY CAN STILL HAVE SUMMER FUN WHILE IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT. SUMMER CAMP SAFETY PROTOCOLS ARE DEVELOPED FOLLOWING RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE GENESEE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT, THE STATE OF MICHIGAN DHHS, MICHIGAN CAMP LICENSING, THE YMCA OF THE USA, AND THE AMERICAN CAMPING ASSOCIATION.

Campers will be placed in smaller groups that will remain appropriately separated from other camper groups. Additional protocols will include health and temperature screenings, physical distancing, mask-wearing, and increased cleaning and sanitation of common areas and shared equipment. Program changes have been made to accommodate these, including the changes to activities that bring multiple groups of campers together {camper’s choice, free swim}. Meals have moved to grab-and-go, rather than buffet-style, to create socially distanced mealtimes. While campers will be physically distanced, they’ll remain socially connected through intentional programming.

At overnight camp, safety is our top priority. All staff are certified in first aid and CPR and have been carefully screened during a character-based hiring process with the highest standards of child safety practices, including multiple professional and personal background checks on each applicant to ensure that we have the best staff working with your child.

Life at Summer Camp

Overnight campers stay in single-gender cabins with our camp counselors. Most of the weekly schedule takes place with the cabin group – same gender, similar-aged groups that travel around camp together under the guidance of camp counselors trying different camp activities.

Campers can choose which skill-building clinic they want to focus on for the week during activity periods in the afternoons. All of our activities are ‘Challenge by Choice;’ we create an environment to encourage campers to push themselves to try each activity, but we don’t make anyone try something they don’t want to do. Great activities are an important part of camp, but the real benefits of summer camp are the strengthened values, being part of a positive community, the confidence that comes from learning new skills, and life-long friendships.

Specialty Camps

Specialty camps are a week of focused fun. Current specialty camp themes include: Survivor, Robotics, Ranch/Ponderosa, Theatre, Photography, and more!

Teen Programs

We offer Leader in Training and Counselor in Training programs for boys and girls grades 10-12. The Leader in Training program motivates teens to think outside of the box and strive to be a strong leader. The Counselor in Training program is the beginning of the journey to becoming an outstanding summer camp staff member. Both Leader in Training and Counselor in Training programs develop problem-solving, communication and team-building skills.

Ypsilanti-area youth summer camps gear up for mix of virtual and in-person programming

From a virtual program centered around writing to outdoor programs with an academic enrichment focus, Ypsilanti-area summer camps are finding new ways to engage with local youth.

Although COVID-19 caused some camps to cancel last year’s programming, most are back this year either in a virtual format or an in-person format with COVID-19 precautions. Camp offerings range from the Ann Arbor YMCA’s Camp New Heights in Ypsilanti Tonwship to free playground camps offered by Washtenaw County to theater-themed camps offered by the Professional Youth Theater of Michigan and Center State Productions. We touched base with staff from three different summer camp programs to talk about what’s on tap for summer 2021.

Parkridge Summer Learning Experience

Washtenaw Community College (WCC) offers summer camps at Parkridge Community Center on Ypsilanti’s Southside each summer. Last year organizers created a hybrid model, partly virtual and partly in person, but the summer camp will return to more of a traditional model this summer.

“We’re definitely excited for this year to be in person the whole time, because we believe kids benefit most from in-person instruction,” says Liz Garaba, WCC’s manager of college and career readiness.

The program is called a “Summer Learning Experience” because the full-day camp will offer four hours of academic enrichment every morning Monday through Thursday. The camp will be staffed by certified teachers, and organizers are aiming for a ratio of one adult to every three campers, with opportunities for one-on-one tutoring. Garaba says students will receive “over 3,000 hours of academic programming in six weeks.”

“We know that because of COVID-19, students haven’t been able to be in the classroom as much and need extra academic support,” Garaba says.

Garaba says organizers are taking several steps to keep participants engaged with academics, including incentives for completing lessons. They’re also taking time to do staff development, ensuring that staff are making their lessons interesting, fun, and project-based when possible.

“If staff are engaged and positive, students will tap into that energy,” Garaba says. “Plus, staff are always asking the kids what they want to do, and that keeps them motivated.”

Afternoons will be for more free-form fun activities, and each Friday will involve a field trip. Garaba says plans haven’t been finalized, but potential field trip locations will include the Detroit Zoo, Henry Ford Museum, and Sky Zone trampoline park in Canton.

Each week will have a different theme as well, from animals to transportation to “gross-out week,” featuring slime and other icky activities.

Most activities will take place outdoors, masks are mandated for both youth and staff, and each day will start with a temperature check, in line with public health guidelines for COVID-19 prevention.

The camp is capped at 32 children this year, but that’s not all bad, says Brandon Tucker, WCC’s associate vice president of workforce and community development. For instance, it’s much easier to coordinate a field trip for 32 children than 100.

“We have a big opportunity to impact a smaller cohort of students and will be able to do it in an intentional and intensive way,” he says. “We’ll really helm them from both an academic standpoint and with life skills.”

Inkstains Summer Writing Camps

Inkstains Summer Writing Camps, an offering of Eastern Michigan University’s (EMU) Office of Campus and Community Writing, have been offering local youth the opportunity to express themselves through writing since they started in 2004.

The program previously served middle school and high school students but expanded to include children from third through sixth grade in 2019. In 2020, the program went 100% virtual, and will be held virtually again this year.

Inkstains camp director Angela Knight says staff learned a lot from going virtual last year and they “hope to provide something that feels more like camp than school” in 2021.

Knight says going virtual allowed Inkstains to include young people who wouldn’t have been able to make the commute to Ypsilanti in the past. 2020 participants came from places including the west side of Michigan and even New York.

The program expanded last year to offer a more social outlet called Signature Saturdays, held once a month for two hours from January through May as well.

“We wanted to offer both a creative outlet for students and an opportunity to socialize with each other,” Knight says. “Writers tend to be introverted, and they were stuck at home on computers all the time.”

This year’s sessions will be shortened to a four-hour block because some participants are feeling burned out on virtual events, Knight says.

Knight says the first day of the virtual writing camp involves a lot of icebreakers. Each day will include a variety of writing prompts, and young people can volunteer to share what they wrote based on the prompts. Volunteers will also share “mini-lessons” on topics like developing characters, exploring forms of poetry, or adding conflict to a plot. Participants also control what kind of feedback they want.

“Maybe they only want to hear praise or only questions,” Knight says. By the end of the week, their peers are giving more focused, constructive criticism, but always in a positive and supportive way.

A staple activity of the in-person writing camps was a “writing marathon” where participants wore matching T-shirts and walked around EMU’s campus finding spots to sit and write.

“Sometimes they had prompts for spots, and other times we just told them to think about what they were hearing and just sit and write,” Knight says.

In 2021, Inkstains used Google Earth to offer a virtual writing marathon, encouraging students to use various locations in Michigan and around the world as writing prompts.

Ann Blakeslee, EMU’s director of campus and community writing and co-founder of YpsiWrites, says her daughter has participated in the Inkstains camps over several years. She says the students perceive the passion that their writing teachers bring to the camps.

“When I walk into the room, I feel all this energy around writing, and it’s a cool thing,” Blakeslee says. “At the end of the program, there’s a big celebration where students read their writing, and it’s a really positive, uplifting, and safe experience for students. It’s just incredible how they share, the pride they feel, the self-confidence they build.”

County-sponsored Playground Camps and Rolling Hills Day Camp

Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation has traditionally hosted a number of summer camps in Ypsi and Ypsi Township, but it canceled all its summer camp offerings in 2020. This year, county-sponsored summer camps are mostly returning to their pre-pandemic form.

Karen Harris, camp director for the county’s Playground Camp program, says the main difference is that camp capacities have been cut in half, from 70 campers at three sites to 30 children at two sites. Those sites will be Grace Fellowship Church House of Solutions in the Sugarbrook neighborhood of Ypsilanti Township and Christian Love Fellowship Church in Superior Township.

“The majority of activities will be outside, and kids are required to wear masks,” Harris says. “We’re also separating them into pods of 10, and they’ll be with the same campers the entire duration.”

Playground camps are free, and lunches are provided by Food Gatherers.

The county’s Rolling Hills camp in Ypsilanti Township will also focus primarily on outdoor activities and will group participants into pods, with two counselors per 10-child pod. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, participants will go to the water park at Rolling Hills County Park, and other activities are planned for Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Those other activities will include a visit from a naturalist who will lead activities like fishing and hiking. A new activity this year will be a visit from the Ypsilanti District Library’s Bookmobile.

At the Rolling Hills camp, children pack their own lunches four days per week and then get a free hot-dog lunch from the water park’s concession stand on Fridays. There is a cost for the Rolling Hills Day Camp but several scholarships are available.

Gilmore Piano Camp

Since its creation 22 years ago, Gilmore Piano Camp has welcomed hundreds of young pianists to its natural outdoor setting at Sherman Lake for fun and study.

The camp provides classical and jazz piano training, a wide range of music-related electives, and many traditional camp activities. Treasured as the Midwest’s only piano-specific summer music camp, Gilmore Piano Camp welcomes pianists of all levels of experience.

This year’s Gilmore Piano Camp is being planned for in-person attendance, adhering strictly to Sherman Lake YMCA and state health protocols.

“Bow to you from a foreign land. My name is Ulyana and I am senior (graduation class) at Harper Creek High School in the USA.It so happened that I am a regular at the MMC. Perhaps every cat in Nerekhta knows me: there was not even a year that I missed a shift in this wonderful camp, each shift is unique here. Foreign volunteers on shifts English + create the feeling of being in the States. Being abroad, you understand the importance of practicing spoken English, which is impossible to get without the experience of communicating with the indigenous population (especially in our time of slang, which takes up almost 50 good percent of spoken language) .

Why I study in the USA. Because she won the exchange program “ FLEX ” (a rather famous program, on the Internet about it a bunch of information ), which gives children from countries that were part of the USSR a chance spend a magical year in America and go to school, living with host family , absolutely free. It would be dishonest not to identify the role of the IMC in my success.This camp developed in me not only a love for the English language, its corresponding level, but also communicative skills , creativity and leadership , which were almost the main criteria for selecting Flex winners.

I remember the first shift here. I remember how I fell in love with the camp at first sight. The atmosphere, teachers, conditions – everything here contributed to my personal development.I can confidently say that the International Center took a direct part in my upbringing and education. The main educational programs of the IMC “Earth – the planet of people” have been the English + language programs of the summer period for several years. Volunteers from England and America participate in the shifts, Russian teachers and students of pedagogical universities help to organize the learning process. The main task is to form an active language environment.

We are very glad that participation in our programs helps children develop language skills and discover new opportunities. Our campers, counselors and teachers take an active part in international competitions, programs and internships.

Today we have compiled a selection of school exchange programs in different directions for those who are under 18 years old. Not everyone knows that there are free opportunities while still in school.

The FLEX Exchange Program allows you to spend your academic year in the United States.Excellent grades and knowledge of English will be your pass. The program is fully funded by the US government. ( Russia has suspended participation in the Future Leaders Exchange program with the United States for two years. According to the Russian authorities, this happened after one of the students did not return home.)

By becoming a member of YFU (Youth For Understanding) exchange programs, you will gain experience, knowledge and skills in order to better navigate the world and learn new things about people, culture, traditions, art, music, literature, politics of the country you are going to.

The National Council of Youth and Children’s Associations of Russia is a federal Russian public organization authorized to conduct international youth cooperation in Russia, has an extensive partner network in foreign countries. They regularly carry out youth international projects, some of them are targeted at schoolchildren.

There is also an opportunity for schoolchildren to win the competition. To do this, follow the contests where the winners get the opportunity to take part in short-term study abroad:

Biography – Igor Kalnin

Violinist and teacher Igor Kalnin was born and began his professional career in Nizhny Novgorod, which he then successfully continued in the USA.He is currently a professor at Luther College in the USA, where he teaches violin and teaches a methodology course. He also works as a concertmaster for the Sinfonia da Camera Chamber Orchestra in Illinois. During the summer he teaches at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan, the largest camp of its kind in the United States, where he is also the concertmaster of the Festival Symphony Orchestra and conducts the Advanced Chamber Orchestra youth orchestra.

Before coming to the USA in 2004, he taught at the Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory at the Department of Stringed Instruments and later worked in the first violin section of the Kremlin chamber orchestra in Moscow.After the move, he worked as an assistant at Yale and Michigan State Universities and in a number of music centers on the East Coast and Midwest of the United States. As an orchestral musician, he served as accompanist for the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra and The Prairie Ensemble, as well as accompanist for the Second Violins of the Lansing (Michigan) and Waterbury (Connecticut) Symphony Orchestras. In addition, he has performed as a guest accompanist with several orchestras in Russia and the USA.

Igor actively gives concerts as a soloist and chamber musician. As a soloist, he has performed in some of the world’s most renowned venues, including the Golden Hall of the Vienna Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall, and has collaborated with numerous orchestras in the United States, Russia and Asia. Together with the American pianist Rochelle Sennett founded the duo “Duo MemDi,” which specializes in performing chamber programs by heart, which, according to the duo members, helps them to better comprehend and reproduce the ideas of composers.Another important element of the duo’s philosophy is the promotion of a multicultural, unifying aspect of classical music, which aims to maintain and develop diversity and equality in modern society. The duo has toured the United States, including the world famous Carnegie Hall, and performed overseas. Their first CD “Gathering Shatters” was released by Albany Records in the fall of 2018 and won a Silver Medal from the Global Music Awards.In addition to his duet performances, Igor is a violinist in the Luther College Piano Quartet, with which he tours and gives masterclasses in the midwestern United States. An important part of his creative activity is devoted to working with contemporary classical music. He works closely and has presented world premieres of works by composers from different countries, such as African-American James Lee and Guggenheim Prize winner Jeffrey Mumford, Spaniard Salvador Brotons, Uzbek composer Dilorom Saydaminova and laureate of the V.Prokofiev and Scriabin Anton Prischepa.

Pedagogical activity takes the most important place in his professional life; he works with college and high school students. Its students won international, national and regional competitions, were admitted to prestigious educational institutions and were invited as soloists to perform with orchestras. Together with Associate Professor of the Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory Irina Lezhneva, he founded the international educational project “The Art of Orchestral Playing,” which has been operating since 2012.The initial idea of the project was to familiarize Russian students with the requirements for orchestral auditions in the United States, however, the range of issues discussed significantly expanded and included such topics as the place of classical music and musicians in modern society, the popularization of classical music in various strata of society, psychological preparation for public performances and a number of other pressing problems. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Community Center for the Arts in Urbana, Illinois, USA.

Igor began his professional education at the Children’s Music School No. 6 Nizhny Novgorod and later continued at the Nizhny Novgorod School of Music under the direction of F. Ya. Forshtok, which he graduated with a “red” diploma.
