Status in 2016, almost 300 thousand people lived in the city.
More than half of the city’s residents are white, about 28% are African Americans, and almost 4% are Asians. One of the largest Puerto Rican communities in the United States lives here.
Brief history
In 1838, Fort Gatlin was erected on the lands adjacent to the territory of the modern city. The fort was used to protect against Indian raids. Gradually, the settlement of Jernigan grew up around the fort, named after one of the very first inhabitants – Aaron Jernigan.
But already in 1857 the city was named “Orlando”. There are two versions of the appearance of the name. According to one of them, the city is named after Orlando Reeves, a private in the US Army who died during the second Florida War with the Seminole Indian tribes. This version was considered official until the second half of the 20th century, until historians stated that there was no Orlando Reeves in the lists of soldiers of that war.
The second version of the appearance of the name of the city is associated with Orland Savage Reese.
The historical archives indicate that he was a large slave owner, a sugar cane planter. It was Orland Savage Reese who drafted the Peace Treaty with the Seminoles. Interestingly, his descendants have been trying for years to prove the connection between the name of the city and their ancestor.
At the end of the 19th century, a railroad was built in Orlando. This was the beginning of the active development of the city, which continued into the 20th century.
Orlando became the center of the global entertainment industry in the 1960s. A huge Disneyland and dozens of other theme parks appear here.

There are many car rental companies in the city. This type of service is very convenient, since places popular with tourists are located on a fairly large area. But you should know that in the afternoon the city is often in traffic jams, especially on Friday and Saturday.
If you want to save on accommodation, choose hostels and hotels “1 – 2 stars”. You can spend the night in them for $74. The cost of a night in a 3-star hotel starts from $153, in a 4-star hotel – from $317, in a deluxe room – from $340.

Renaissance etching HiSoUR – Hi So You Are
Etching Revival, meaning “etching rebirth”, is an expression that refers to the enormous development and spread of art printing as an art form between the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century. Particularly in the United States, the etching renaissance is the resurgence and revitalization of etching as an original form of printing over a period of time roughly from 1850 to 1930 year old
Historical outline
During the century after Rembrandt’s death, the methods of etching and drying, brought to their highest point, gradually weakened.
By the end of the eighteenth century, with brilliant exceptions such as Piranesi, Tiepolo and Goya, most etchings were reproductive or illustrative.
The origin of the phenomenon
However, in the 1840s and 50s in France, many artists created some landscape etchings that seemed to bring back the spirit of the old master’s spirit. Daubigny, Millet, and especially Charles Jacques produced engravings that differed from those that had been heavily processed by the reproduction plates of the last century.
The phenomenon that originated in France with the work of artists from the Barbizon school such as Charles-Francois Daubigny and Jean-Francois Millet, and the founding of the Société des Acquafortistes in Paris in 1862 by the publisher Alfred Cadar, developed later. in the United States in the sixties and seventies, and was probably prompted by the rediscovery by Romantic and Realist artists of the works of Rembrandt and Albrecht Dürer.
An important factor in the growth in this sector was certainly the high demand for affordable goods and art objects from the emerging classes and the middle class, whose economic opportunities, individually diminished, were enormous enough to finance a flourishing product market.

Several people were of particular importance in the revival of French printmaking. Publisher Alfred Kadar, printer Auguste Delattre, and Maxime Lalanne, an engraver who wrote a popular etching textbook in 1866, set out sweeping motion outlines. Kadar founded the Société des Aquafortistes in 1862, resurrecting the awareness of fine, original printmaking in the minds of the public. Charles Merion was an early inspiration and close collaborator of Delâtre, outlining the various possible methods of modern etching and producing works that would rank with Rembrandt and Dürer.
Success and highlights
In the United States, the Etching Club of New York, founded in 1877, helped bring press artists together and spread their fame and production, including through exhibitions such as the American Art Review held annually between 1879 and 1881.
James Whistler played the leading role among them. In addition to him, William Merritt Chase, Samuel Colman, Thomas Moran, John Henry Twachtman, and Julian Alden Weir were among the American artists who made the most extensive use of this medium.
In addition to having a major impact on German Expressionism, the “engraving revival” brought the press closer to the main exponents of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and early avant-garde artists, including Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Camille Pissarro, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Pablo Picasso.
Lalanna’s Treatise on Etching was translated by S. R. Koehler and published in the United States in 1880. He played a significant role in the revival of engraving in America. Before the translation of Lalanne’s book, however, Philip Gilbert Hamerton became an active promoter of etching in Britain. His Etching and Etchings (1868) was more of an art history than a technical text, but he did much to popularize the art and some of its contemporary practitioners.
The book went through many editions until the 20th century. By the 1870s, Hamerton was also publishing an influential periodical called The Portfolio, which printed etchings in an edition of 1,000 copies.
For Hamerton and others, the father of the British Renaissance in etching was Francis Seymour Hayden, an engraver-surgeon who, with his son-in-law, the American James McNeil Whistler, created a work beginning in 1860 that is still considered one of the highlights of etching history. Haden was a collector and authority on Rembrandt etchings, and it is not surprising that when Whistler, a young man, began to show signs of deviating from the 17th-century model, Haden and he parted ways.
It was Whistler who persuaded the painter Alphonse Legros, one of the members of the French Renaissance, to come to England as a teacher. This connection between the arts of the two countries, although short-lived, did much to confirm engraving as an art form. Very soon the French etching showed the same modernist characteristics as French art in general, while the English and American etchings remained true to the technical skill and subjects revered by Rembrandt.
