I understand my poor writing skill (relative to esteemed intellegence) and flippant remarks may be taken as derisive. They are not meant to be. On the “not crt” thread serveral comments were beyond the pale imo. I could not not use my esteemed intelligence to further inform them. Others tried. So baking and breaking bread over a story by a fire, being nice and open in a dialogue, not debate or discussion, may achieve belief change quicker than esteemed intelligence.
The esteemed intelligence which made the wiki page on Bimbo I fear, won’t communicate to them why they yell insults at you in the street, nor why the Capitol was stormed.
My teenager has just discovered people yell vile insults at certain people in weird places. If you or any esteemed intelligence here may enlighten me as to why it still is that way in the 21c, and what to do about it, I am all ears.
The Lemon Twigs – Songs For The General Public | Reviews
Brian and Michael D’Addario reconvene for another blast of surrealist glam pop, tearing apart their early 70s reference books for something a little more personal. Recorded between their own Long Island studio, a space in LA, and New York’s history-steeped Electric Lady studio, ‘Songs For The General Public’ is in turns bewildering and heartbreaking, a potent pop statement and a dizzyingly bizarre melodic belch.
A little more focussed – second album ‘Go To School’ was a concept album about a chimpanzee raised as a human boy – than last time out, The Lemon Twigs are in no mood for restraint. Rocking some Sparks-esque melodrama and Rocky Horror theatrics, the album opens in anthemic style, surging into view with the high heel strut of ‘Hell On Wheels’.
A group at their preening, pouncing best, ‘Songs For The General Public’ offers a full 360 view of the D’Addario bros. creativity. Check out the shades of Elton John on piano driven ‘No One Holds You (Closer Than The One You Haven’t Met Yet)’ or the riveting breakneck twists and turns that spew through ‘The One’.
Capable of condensing an entire prog triple LP into a three minute pop song, The Lemon Twigs adopt a cellular approach for ‘Only A Fool’, while the dizzying ‘Why Do Lovers Own Each Other?’ offers a cynical, disconsolate look at failed relationships.
Shades of Todd Rundgren return on the cute ‘Somebody Loving You’, while wisps of Don MacLean’s nostalgia-soaked songwriting linger in the background of the harmonica-flecked ‘Moon’.
That’s not to say that The Lemon Twigs are operating some reference point racket; the reality is, there’s so much going on here that their musical rollercoaster ride leaves us grasping for something – anything – to hold us down. As curiously understated finale ‘Ashamed’ rolls to a close, it’s clear that sometimes you simply have to sit back and enjoy the ride.

When looking closely at our native oaks, you may observe unusual or distorted growths on their leaves, flowers, buds, or twigs.

When looking closely at our native oaks, you may observe unusual or distorted growths on their leaves, flowers, buds, or twigs. These growths are galls produced by small insects. The gall-forming insects rarely cause more than superficial damage to the plant. However, many gardeners are alarmed by the presence of these benign visitors. There is really no need to be alarmed by gall-formers. After reading about them, you may even begin to respect them for their ingenuity.
After hatching, the tiny larvae feed on the plant tissue and create a home surrounded by live plant tissue. The developing larva continues to produce plant growth compounds that maintain and control host plant cell division. The gall provides protection and food to the developing larva. The larva matures, pupates within the gall, then chews its way out of the gall when mature. Each species of gall forming insect creates a uniquely colored, shaped, and sized gall.
Most insect caused galls on Arizona oaks are not harmful to the plant. Affected leaves often tolerate gall formation with little more than cosmetic damage. Affected twigs are occasionally killed. Pacifists, such as myself, consider this akin to natural pruning. On eastern oak species, twig galls reportedly cause significant damage to pin and willow oaks. In nearly all cases prevention of gall formation is exceedingly difficult and is not considered practical. After all, the developing insect is entirely encased in living tissue. Systemic insecticides may offer some measure of control, but the long-term damage caused does not warrant the energy and expense of an insecticide application. I recommend simply tolerating (and possibly enjoying) the various unusual shapes. You may choose to prune them out if they offend your sense of plant aesthetics.
Natural enemies of gall formers are almost always present where native plant communities are affected. In addition, natural variability within populations of oaks of the same species will cause a range of “bud break” dates. This allows some oaks to fend off the gall formers better than others. For example, where there is intense early season pressure by gall formers, the individual trees that break bud later could have a distinct selective advantage. This would especially affect populations where gall formers cause damage significant enough to decrease the vigor of the infested trees or if gall formers affected acorn production.
Our native hackberry trees (Celtis reticulata) also commonly have galls on leaves. These are caused by psyllids: small insects resembling miniature cicadas. Again, these insects cause little lasting damage to the affected tree. Galls formed by mites can cause more significant damage: especially to non-native ornamental or fruit trees such as pears. Here, pesticide applications may be appropriate in order to protect the fruit crop or vigor of the tree.
If nothing else, I hope that readers will learn to observe their plants for abnormal growth. Then try to determine what caused the abnormality. Cut open the affected plant tissue. Explore the tissue with a hand lens and look for signs of insect larvae, adults, exit holes, etc. If you find something interesting, but not fully developed, you can continue to explore the galls and watch the insect develop into an adult.

Rehabilitation of Freeze-Damaged Citrus and Avocado Trees

For the first time since the great freeze of ’89-90, we have experienced a little more than minor damage to our crops. Compared to the San Joaquin Valley, Ventura country escaped without major damage; although there were some areas harder hit like the Ojai Valley and some canyons near Santa Paula. Many parts of the SJV were hard hit.
As in the freeze of 1990, your trees must be cared for in the same way during this post freeze period. In 1990, advice was issued to the grower about the rehabilitation of their trees, both citrus and avocado. We would like to review that information for you at this time. How can we best aid tree recovery so that tree growth and yield will proceed most rapidly?
FREEZE DAMAGE
Citrus and avocado leaves appear wilted or flaccid during periods of low temperature. This is a natural protective response to freezing temperatures and does not mean the leaves have been frozen. Leaves will be firm and brittle and often curled when frozen. Leaves become flaccid after thawing, and if the injury is not too great, they gradually regain turgor and recover, leaving however, dark flecks on the leaves. Seriously frozen leaves collapse, dry out, and remain on the tree. Foliage form recent flushes are most susceptible to this damage. If twigs or wood have been seriously damaged, the frozen leaves may remain on the tree for several weeks. If the twigs and wood have not been damaged severely, the leaves are rapidly shed. Trees losing their leaves rapidly is often a good sign and is not, as many growers believe a sign of extensive damage.
Cold damage to the twigs appears as water soaking or discoloration. In older branches and trunks it appears as splitting or loosening of bark where the cambium has been killed. Bark may curl and dry with many small cracks. Dead patches of bark may occur in various locations on limbs and trunk.
Sensitivity to frost is dependent upon many variables. In general, mandarins are the most cold hardy followed by sweet orange and grapefruit. Lemons are very frost sensitive with Eureka decidedly more sensitive than Lisbon. For avocados, Hass is about as cold tolerant as lemons, while Bacon is more cold tolerant. Limes are the least cold hardy. Healthy trees are more tolerant than stressed ones. The rootstock also imparts sensitivity onto the scion.
Injury to the foliage and to young trees may be immediately recognizable but the true extent of the damage to larger branches, trunks, and rootstocks may not appear for on to four months following the freeze. No attempt should be made to prune or even assess damage from the frost until spring when new growth appears.
WHITEWASHING
The only treatment that should be done rapidly after a freeze is whitewashing. Often the most sever damage following a freeze results from sunburn of exposed twigs and branches after defoliation. Avocados and lemons are the most susceptible to sunburn, oranges not as much; but, if the tree has been defoliated, applying whitewash would be precautionary. Temperatures do not have to be extremely high to cause sunburn.
PRUNING
Pruning should be carried out to prevent secondary pathogens and wood decay organisms from slowing tree recovery. Again, however, there should be no rush to prune. Premature pruning, at the very least, may have to be repeated and, at the worst, it can slow tree rehabilitation. It should be remembered that when pruning, all cuts should be made into living wood. Try to cut flush with existing branches at crotches. Do not leave branch stubs or uneven surfaces. Tools should be disinfected in bleach or other fungicide before moving on to the next tree.
The extent of pruning is dictated by the amount of freeze damage:

IRRIGATION
Irrigate carefully! Remember that when leaves are lost, obviously evaporation from leaves is greatly reduced, and, therefore the amount of water required is also greatly reduced. A frost-damaged tree will use the same amount of water as a much younger or smaller tree. Over irrigation will not result in rapid recovery. Instead, it may induce root damage and encourage growth of root rotting organisms. This is particularly true for avocados. Irrigation should be less frequent, and smaller amounts of water should be applied until trees have regained their normal foliage development.
FERTILIZATION
Fertilization of freeze-damaged trees should be carefully considered. There is no evidence to indicate that frozen trees respond to any special fertilizer that is supposed to stimulate growth. If trees are severely injured-with large limbs or even parts of the trunk killed-nitrogen fertilizer applications should be greatly reduced, until the structure and balance of the tree become re-established.
Trees should be watched for evidence of deficiencies of minor elements. Deficiencies of zinc, manganese, copper, and iron are most likely to develop. For citrus, these materials should be applied as sprays, and they should be used as often as symptoms are observed. Two or more applications may be required the first year.

FKA Twigs – LP 1

The Undefinable FKA Twigs
FKA Twigs is a name you’ll probably hear more often. She’s an English singer who cannot be defined by a genre. While some are quick to dub her the next big thing in alternative (or subgenre of ) R&B, she’s much more than that. With two previous EPs under her belt, her first full length release, appropriately titled LP1, is a subtle preview at what makes her interesting and someone to watch out for.
The first few notes of “Preface,” the first track, do not provide much in terms of what you should prepare yourself for. Staccato vocalizations and tight harmonies with an electronic beat are the only things heard throughout the song. When she starts singing— that’s when you know something is different about Twigs. She comes across like a female version of The Weeknd. “Lights On” and “Two Weeks” speak explicitly about sex and what she wants done (“Two Weeks” also boasts a very similar lick to Air Supply’s “I’m All Out of Love”). Still, as she continues in the songs, there’s still a delicate quality to her words.
“Numbers” has the same R&B quality, but also a slight trap feel with the beat. “Was I just a number to you / Was I just a lonely girl to fly?” The delicate quality of her vox is a little more broken here, and we can hear the beginnings of the singer’s full voice. It’s not a typical pop song, and it’s the type of music that doesn’t really need a category.
Upon first listen, you may scratch your head. By the second listen, you might still wonder what you’ve just heard. The third listen will make you realize what exactly you have in your hands. There’s more to the songs than you realize. Little bits of old school R&B influences and throwbacks on carefully orchestrated tracks define LP 1. It’s a chaotic jumble of something. FKA Twigs is something all her own and she’s going to be a name to know because of it. There’s a reason FKA Twigs shouldn’t be cornered into a genre, especially since you’ll scratch your head for most of the album trying to figure out where to place her.

python – Tool to convert Python code to PEP8-compliant
I know there are tools out there that check if your Python code is PEP8 compliant, like there is an online service and a Python module.
However, I cannot find a service or module that can convert my Python file to a standalone, valid Python PEP8 file. Does anyone know if there are such?
I guess this is doable since PEP8 is completely about the look and feel of the code, right?

Unfortunately, “pep8 storming” (the entire project) has several negative side effects:
- a lot of merge conflicts
- break the git
- make it harder to check the code
Alternatively (and thanks to @yp for the idea) I wrote a small package in which autopep8 contains only the lines you’ve been working on since the last commit / branch:
Basically leaving the project a little bit better than you found it.

pip install pep8radius
Suppose you have completed your work from master
and are ready to commit:
# be somewhere in your project directory
# see the diff with pep, see the changes you've made since master
pep8radius master --diff
# Make those changes
pep8radius master --diff --in-place
Or to flush newlines that you have committed since the last commit:
pep8radius --diff
pep8radius --diff --in-place
# the lines which changed since a specific commit `git diff 98f51f`
pep8radius 98f51f --diff
Basically pep8radius
applies autopep8 to lines in git / hg diff output (since last shared commit).
This script currently works with git and hg, if you are using something else and would like this to work please leave a comment / question / PR!

I have done extensive research on various Python tools and code style.There are two types of tools: linters – they parse your code and give some warnings about misused code styles and show you tips for fixing it, and code formatter – when you save your file, it reformats the document using the PEP style.
Since reformatting needs to be more precise – if it rephrases what you don’t need, it becomes useless – they cover less of the PEP, linters show a lot more.
They all have different permissions for setting – for example, configuring the pilinter in all its rules (you can enable / disable each type of warning), black is not configurable at all.

There are many.
IDEs usually have some formatting built in. IntelliJ Idea / PyCharm does the same as the Python plugin for Eclipse and so on.
There are formatters / linters that can handle multiple languages. https://coala.io is a good example of this.
Then there are single purpose tools that have been mentioned a lot in other answers.
One specific technique for automatic reformatting is to parse the file in the AST tree (without removing comments) and then dumping it back into text (which means that nothing of the original formatting is preserved).An example of this is https://github.com/python/black.

You can use autopep8! While you’re making yourself a cup of coffee, this tool successfully removes all those pesky PEP8 violations that don’t change the value of the code.
Install it via pip:
pip install autopep8
Apply this to a specific file:
autopep8 py_file --in-place
Or for your project (recursively), the verbose option gives you some feedback on how it goes :
autopep8 project_dir --recursive --in-place --pep8-passes 2000 --verbose
Note.Sometimes the default 100 passes is not enough, I set it to 2000 as it is high enough and will intercept all but the most problematic files (it stops transferring when it finds no resolvable pep8 violations) …
For now, I propose to retest and commit!
If you want “full” PEP8 compliance: I used one of the tactics to start autopep8 as described above and then start PEP8 which prints the remaining violations (file, line number and what):
pep8 project_dir --ignore = E501
And manually change them individually (eg E712s – Boolean comparison).
Note: autopep8 offers an argument --aggressive
(to ruthlessly “fix” these meaning-changing violations), but be careful if you are using aggressive mode you might have to debug … (for example in numpy / pandas {{X1}} but not True is np.bool_ (True)

You can check how many violations of each type (before and after):
pep8 --quiet --statistics.
Note.I consider E501 (too long a string) to be a special case as there will probably be a lot of them in your code and sometimes they are not fixed by autopep8.
As an example, I have applied this technique to the pandas codebase.

@ Andy Hayden gave a good overview of autopep8.In addition to this, there is another package called pep8ify that also does the same.
However, both packages can only remove lint errors, but cannot format the code.

The above code remains the same after pep8ifying as well. But the code doesn’t look good yet. You can use formatter like yapf which will format the code even if the code is PEP8 compliant. The above code will be formatted to
little = more [3: 5]
Sometimes it even ruins your manual formatting.For example
BAZ = {
[1, 2, 3, 4],
[5, 6, 7, 8],
[9, 10, 11, 12]
}
Will be converted to
BAZ = {[1, 2, 3, 4], [5, 6, 7, 8], [9, 10, 11, 12]}
But you can say that to ignore some parts.
BAZ = {
[1, 2, 3, 4],
[5, 6, 7, 8],
[9, 10, 11, 12]
} # yapf: disable

If you are using eclipse + PyDev you can simply activate autopep8 from PyDev preferences: Windows -> Preferences -> enter “autopep8” in the search filter.
