Operation Purple Camp FAQs – National Military Family Association
Program Overview
u
Operation Purple Camp offers free week long, in-person, overnight summer camp experiences to military-connected children at locations across the United States.
u
No applicant to the Operation Purple Program is guaranteed a spot. The number of summer camps spots are predetermined, and space is filled based on criteria outlined below.
u
Active duty and veteran military–connected children from all eight uniformed service branches are eligible to apply. This includes the Army, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the United States Public Health Services Commission Corps, as well as National Guard and Reserve components of each respective branches.
Applying and Acceptance
u
Applications for the 2023 Operation Purple Camp summer are scheduled to open February 15. Camp locations and dates will also be released at this time.
u
Beginning February 15, there will be a link on the Operation Purple Camp page to our application. Please note you must submit an application for each child you would like to attend camp.
u
Upon completion of the online application, applicants will see a message that says “You have successfully completed the application. Thank you for applying.” In addition to this confirmation screen, you will receive one confirmation email to the email address you provide.
u
Campers can apply for and attend ONE camp each year. The National Military Family Association reserves the right to remove the application for campers who have applied to more than one location.
u
Campers are prioritized based on several criteria that include, but are not limited to, being the child of a service-member who is wounded, ill, or injured, or having a parent or guardian currently in a deployment cycle (has deployed, preparing to deploy, currently deployed). If all spaces are not filled with campers who fall in priority categories, the remaining camp slots are filled with eligible military children. Campers are NOT chosen on a first come first serve basis.
u
Each year, our Research and Insights team aggregates the information we gather across our many programs to better understand our military families so NMFA can continue to stand up for, support, and enhance the quality of life for our families who serve. Your responses are critical to help NMFA create and sustain programs that impact more military families, like yours.
u
All camp applicants will receive emails regarding their application status no later than six weeks before the start of camp. You will receive notice of your acceptance by email from [email protected]. It is imperative that you provide us with an email address you check regularly.
Hold My Spot Deposit” + Other Expenses
u
When a child is selected to attend Operation Purple Camp, they will be required to submit an online “Hold My Spot” deposit of $25 per child. This refundable deposit ensures campers will attend sessions for which they have been selected. Families who do not respond to the acceptance email or do not pay this deposit will be taken off the camper roster for that summer. Instructions for how to pay this deposit will be provided in your acceptance email.
u
Hold My Spot deposits are held until the end of the camp season (late August). At that time, you will receive an email asking if you would like your deposit to be returned, or if you would like to donate the amount to the Operation Purple Program. All requested deposits will be returned by September 15 after the conclusion of summer camp.
u
Operation Purple Camp is a free week of camp. However, there are a few possible costs for families that are not covered by the National Military Family Association.
1. Transportation to and from your camp location
2. Any COVID-related testing or protocols required by specific camp sites
3. Camp suggested packing-list items (like, sleeping bag, flashlight, etc. )
What Comes Next?
u
All campers will be notified of their acceptance to camp, or placement on our waitlist, by 11:59pm ET April 15, 2023.
u
Once your child is accepted to a camp, that camp will reach out directly with information and forms to help prepare you and your campers for drop-off day! Here is a general idea of what you can expect:
- Receive notice of acceptance to Operation Purple Camp
- As early as April, but no later than 3 weeks before your camp begins, you will hear from your individual camp with instructions on how to complete camp health forms and submit any necessary paperwork. You will also have access to a “welcome packet” from camp that includes camp specific information and instructions. These packets are delivered via email so it is imperative your contact information on your child’s application is correct and up-to-date as this will be the contact information we pass on to camps.
- No later than 2 weeks before camp, all camp health forms and other required documents MUST be submitted to camps.
You are subject to dismissal from the program if you are not able to meet this deadline.
- Any questions regarding camper accommodations, dietary restrictions, camp specific activities, or other concerns can be addressed directly to your respective camp location, or with an NMFA staff member, at any point during the registration process, but should be addressed BEFORE campers are dropped off for their first day of camp. Feel free to reach out to our Operation Purple Program team at [email protected] with questions.
u
Campers who are waitlisted will be notified directly by their selected camp if any spots become available. Notification of selection can occur any time between April 15th up until just a few days before camp begins. You will only be notified if a spot opens for you.
Please DO NOT contact camps directly regarding waitlist status. They will be unable to answer your questions and will direct you to contact an NMFA staff member. All questions regarding camper waitlists should be addressed to OPC@MilitaryFamily. org. Camps do not have waitlist information.

Let HelpYourTeenNow Help You Choose The Best School For Your Teen
Help Your Teen Now is not affiliated with any program, school, or facility anywhere in the country, so you can be sure that our information and recommendations are unbiased. We want you to know that there are several misconceptions about boot camps and military schools in Florida, and some things to be aware of. While the rigid rules and strict structure of these programs may seem ideal to correct misbehavior, there they aren’t right for teens with emotional, behavioral or mental health issues. Military schools are intended for teens who wish to gain an exemplary education while preparing for a career in the armed services. Boot camps are only intended to provide short-term help. We strongly urge parents to consider therapeutic boarding schools for their teens. These programs are long-term, include therapy for correcting behavior, and offer teens a chance to succeed academically. Alternative or therapeutic boarding schools have a much higher rate of long term success and offer you and your child a better chance to achieve your goals. We will help you find the right program for your family’s needs.
