So it’s in Rob Vito’s best interest to promote the safety effects of Kevlar padding.
But in the race to better protect NFL players, there are still questions as to whether the protection is enough.
In a well-reported piece at Wired.com, Sean Conboy takes a look at the push-pull between equipment manufacturers and doctors, and whether they can agree on a preferred path.
Vito’s the CEO of Unequal Technologies, which makes protective gear out of Kevlar, the bullet-proof material. He says things like: “If Kevlar can stop a bullet, it can damn sure stop a blitz,” and he’s taking more and more orders for his product from the professional to youth levels.
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo wore his padding while recovering from cracked ribs and a punctured lung, and James Harrison signed on as an endorser after breaking his orbital bone and having his helmet fitted with Kevlar padding.
The product in question is the “EXO Skeleton CRT,” which stands for “concussion reduction technology.” More than 20 NFL and NHL teams are using it, but doctors wonder if it’s as effective as promised.
“We need to look at this scientifically and come up with some process of examination on whether this works,” said Dr. Michael Collins, the director of the UPMC Sports Medicine program who has become the go-to concussion specialist for many NFL players. “At this point in time, to my knowledge, I don’t know of a fully controlled study that shows the effectiveness of [Kevlar] in mitigating the instance or severity of concussions.”
Vito claims his padding can reduce the G-forces generated at impact by 25 percent.
“I don’t want to claim we’re the cure-all,” he said. “But I think we are the beginning. Twenty years ago, seatbelts were optional, too.”
While the new gear can doubtless protect the wearers, the bigger question may be what happens to the players on the other side of the transaction.
Many have argued that modern protective gear creates a feeling of invincibility among players, and the head-long style of play that engenders can endanger them beyond what any material can protect them from.

Homemade Kevlar Lacrosse Arm Pads – First Attempt
Yesterday I talked about a new padding technology from Unequal Technologies called EXO Skeleton. I got a bunch of emails and facebook messages about it and at least one of our readers went ahead and bought some without me even doing a full review! For more photos and info on the pads, check out my post from yesterday. But have no fear, because the reviews are coming, and after messing around with the product for the better part of 2 days, I’m thinking the reviews are going to be pretty darn positive. I started off by using the Kevlar infused material to make a set of arm pads. From scratch. At home.
I figured if I could make a pair of arm pads out of sheets of material, and they actually worked, then the technology would definitely pass the lacrosse test. I’m a tinkerer and I’m doing this at home with scissors, a drill and some rigged up engineering. Now imagine what a lacrosse manufacturer has to work with, and how much more they know about padding. We’re talking major protective padding evolution here.
I wanted to base my arm pad off of the old foam dipped in rubber pads that I grew up with. For their time, these pads were great as they covered much of the arm, were light, and flexible. Their design was very simple with an upper arm pad and a lower arm pad that were both attached to an elbow area pad. There was a little overlap, and although the pads didn’t go around the entire arm, the part they did cover was well protected.

The first impovement that came to mind was to step up from simple rectangular pads, and move on towards padding that wrapped almost the entire arm. The flexible Repelversion of the padding made it easy to wrap my entire forearm in padding if I had wanted, but I cut it back a little to leave the inside of the arm a little more open. I then fitted the lower arm pad by cutting holes in it and lacing it up much like a lacrosse stick using sidewall lace. I repeated the process for the upper arm pad, but made the piece a little larger, since the upper arm is a little larger than the lower.

For the elbow pad, I used a piece of the Egis padding, which is SUPER protective. I had to use a drill to get through the blast shield, but this made nice perfect holes for when I strung it together. I used a piece of sidewall string to pull the pad into a U-shape, and it wrapped around my elbow nicely. I then drilled two holes on the top and bottom of the pad, and used more sidewall string to tie the lower pad to the elbow, and the upper pad to the elbow.

I now had a 3 piece arm pad. But when I put it on, it didn’t feel right. At first I thought it was my second evolution from the LAP pad, where I placed the elbow pad OUTSIDE the arm pads…

But then I realized my arm was too constricted by the lacing I had used to secure the padding. When my arm moved and flexed, the sidewall had no give to it, and I could feel it cutting off circulation. So I went out in search of small gauge bugee cord, but couldn’t find any. So instead, I bought up all the long hair bands I could and decided to give them a shot.
There was no give to the pad. Too toight.
I pulled out all of the string (except where it was used to connect the lower and upper arm pads to the elbow pad), and began replacing it with these long, stretchy hairbands. The hair bands came in all sorts of colors, so I definitely got a rainbow warrior effect going on with the pads now, but I think it looks pretty cool personally.

The pads are flexible, comfortable, and for a first run, pretty damn awesome! I’m going to actually use them in a game either this week or this weekend, and I’ll be sure to report back with more information. I’m also going to try to make another pair of arm pads, but I can promise you, the second attempt will be MUCH more adventurous!

I did put the pads on for a while and just wear them, and even went so far as to hit myself with one of lacrosse sticks. it felt as good as any other pads I’d ever worn, so that is definitely a good sign. The padding is rubber against the skin, so they don’t slip at all, but they also don’t breathe much. But when the lacrosse manufacturers start to use this stuff, that will be much less of a concern, because they know how to vent gloves and arm pads much better than I do! For now, I’m just proud I made something that actually works! The look is still a little rough, but I’m still impressed with the technology!

A group of six pitchers that includes Chicago White Sox right-hander Hector Noesi has used a Kevlar padding insert in caps this season or in spring training that Major League Baseball has not approved, the manufacturer told ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” on Sunday.
Rob Vito, CEO of Unequal Technologies, said Noesi and New York Yankees reliever Esmil Rogers have worn the company’s “Dome” insert under official New Era caps in games this season. Four other pitchers he declined to name have also worn them in the last six weeks.
Vito said the padding is a 5-ounce military-grade composite, with one layer of coated Kevlar and another of a soft proprietary material called airilon.
Noesi started the White Sox’s home opener Friday; the team’s Comcast Sports Net telecast first reported he was wearing the Kevlar padding in his cap.
An MLB executive told “Outside the Lines” on Sunday that it was looking into the use of the Dome inserts and was reserving comment. Pitchers are free to wear protective headgear of their choice, as long as it doesn’t interfere with competition or with MLB licensing agreements.
As “Outside the Lines” reportedlast yearand last month, MLB and the players association approved two versions of isoBLOX padding for pitchers’ caps made by 4Licensing subsidiary Pinwrest. But only one pitcher wore last year’s product and none has worn the new iteration in a game this season.
That padding weighs about 7 ounces and noticeably increases a cap’s size and bulk. Approval came after independent laboratory testing at 83 mph, which an MLB-commissioned study determined to be the average speed of line drives reaching the mound area.
Vito said his Pennsylvania-based company’s padding will “keep pitchers safe from line drives, but I’m not making any claims about speeds.” Unequal did its own testing, had independent testing done and plans to seek MLB approval, Vito said.
“But I wanted to keep quiet about it until seeing whether players like it,” Vito said.
Two years ago, Unequal failed to gain acceptance when it offered padding weighing 9 ounces, Vito said. He added that a change to airilon from another material, an “elastomer” called accelleron, has reduced the weight and increased the capacity to absorb energy.
About 20 MLB catchers, including the Kansas City Royals’ Salvador Perez and David Ross of the Chicago Cubs, an endorser for Unequal, wear either the Dome or the company’s “Uncap” padded insert that has a hard plastic layer, Vito said. The Uncap has not been tested or approved by MLB either.
But Vito said he believes his products deserve a favorable response from baseball.
“I think MLB will welcome the fact that players have armored up their protection,” Vito said.

Gland packing Germorum S-750 – made of aramid fibers (“Kevlar” by DuPont), impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) emulsion.
Kevlar fibers, from which the packing is woven, have a very high tensile strength, comparable to that of steel. Due to this property of the fibers, packing MC -750 (“Germorum” C-750) is better than many other types of packing, withstands abrasive and high pressure.
This packing can be installed as end rings with other types of packing to obtain different properties of the stuffing box packing.
Due to the high strength of the MC-750 packing, Germorum C-750 is recommended for applications where the packing is required to obtain more stable characteristics, for example, at high pressures, abrasive media, poor condition or unreliable bearing design.
