What are the admission requirements for Kean University. How competitive is the acceptance rate. What GPA do you need to get in. What are the SAT and ACT score expectations.
Kean University Acceptance Rate and Selectivity
Kean University boasts an acceptance rate of 86%, making it a lightly selective institution. This means that for every 100 applicants, 86 receive an offer of admission. While the acceptance rate is relatively high, prospective students should still strive to meet or exceed the university’s expectations for GPA and standardized test scores to ensure the best chances of admission.
GPA Requirements for Kean University
The average GPA of admitted students at Kean University is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. This indicates that the university accepts students with slightly below-average academic performance. While a B average is generally sufficient, prospective students should aim to include some A’s in their academic record to strengthen their application.
Do you need a perfect GPA to get into Kean University? Not necessarily. The university’s admissions process takes a holistic approach, considering factors beyond just GPA. However, maintaining a GPA close to or above the 3.0 average will significantly improve your chances of admission.
Standardized Testing Policies at Kean University
Kean University has not explicitly stated a rigid policy on SAT/ACT requirements. However, the university does publish average test scores, suggesting a test-flexible approach. This means that while submitting test scores is not mandatory, it can provide an additional dimension to your application and potentially strengthen your candidacy.
Should you take the SAT or ACT if applying to Kean University? While not required, it is generally recommended to take either the SAT or ACT and submit your scores if you perform well. This can help distinguish your application from others and demonstrate your academic preparedness for college-level work.
SAT Score Requirements for Kean University
The average SAT score for admitted students at Kean University is 990 on the 1600 SAT scale. This places Kean University in the “Lightly Competitive” category for SAT scores. Here’s a breakdown of the SAT score ranges:
- 25th percentile: 890
- 75th percentile: 1080
What does this mean for your application? Scoring above 990 will place you above average among Kean University applicants, potentially increasing your chances of admission. However, even scores in the 25th percentile (890) may be considered, especially if other aspects of your application are strong.
ACT Score Requirements for Kean University
The average ACT score for admitted students at Kean University is 20. This makes Kean University “Moderately Competitive” for ACT scores. The score ranges are as follows:
- 25th percentile: 17
- 75th percentile: 22
How should you interpret these ACT score requirements? Aiming for a score of 20 or higher will place you at or above the average for Kean University applicants. However, scores as low as 17 may still be considered, particularly if other aspects of your application are compelling.
Standardized Test Score Submission Policies
Kean University’s approach to standardized test scores offers some flexibility to applicants. For SAT scores, the university likely considers all submitted scores, although their exact Score Choice policy is not explicitly stated. This means that if you take the SAT multiple times, all of your scores may be reviewed in the admissions process.
For ACT scores, Kean University allows applicants to have more control over which scores are submitted. You can take the ACT multiple times and choose to send only your highest score. This policy can be advantageous for students who see improvement in their scores over multiple test attempts.
Does Kean University superscore the ACT? While the university’s exact policy on superscoring is not clearly stated, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. This means that Kean University likely considers your highest composite ACT score from a single test date, rather than combining your best section scores from multiple test dates.
Strategies for Meeting Kean University’s Admission Requirements
To maximize your chances of admission to Kean University, consider the following strategies:
- Aim for a GPA of 3.0 or higher, focusing on maintaining a strong academic performance throughout high school.

Kean University Admission Requirements
If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.
The acceptance rate at Kean University is 86%. For every 100 applicants, 86 are admitted.
This means the school is
lightly selective. The school will have their expected requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores. If you meet their requirements, you’re almost certain to get an offer of admission. But if you don’t meet Kean University’s requirements, you’ll be one of the unlucky few people who gets rejected.
Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.
The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school’s average GPA for its current students.
The average GPA at Kean University is 3.
(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.
With a GPA of 3, Kean University
accepts below-average students. It’s OK to be a B-average student, with some A’s mixed in. It’d be best to avoid C’s and D’s, since application readers might doubt whether you can handle the stress of college academics.
Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Most schools require the SAT or ACT, and many also require SAT subject tests.
Kean University hasn’t explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it’s published average SAT or ACT scores (we’ll cover this next), it’s likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, “if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don’t.”
Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Kean University will submit their scores. If you don’t submit scores, you’ll have one fewer dimension to show that you’re worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.
Kean University SAT Requirements
Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school’s average score.
Average SAT: 990
The average SAT score composite at Kean University is a 990 on the 1600 SAT scale.
This score makes Kean University Lightly Competitive for SAT test scores.
Kean University SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)
The 25th percentile New SAT score is 890, and the 75th percentile New SAT score is 1080. In other words, a 890 on the New SAT places you below average, while a 1080 will move you up to above average.
Here’s the breakdown of new SAT scores by section:
Section | Average | 25th Percentile | 75th Percentile |
Composite | 990 | 890 | 1080 |
SAT Score Choice Policy
The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.
Kean University ACT Requirements
Just like for the SAT, Kean University likely doesn’t have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.
Average ACT: 20
The average ACT score at Kean University is 20. This score makes Kean University Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.
The 25th percentile ACT score is 17, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 22.
ACT Score Sending Policy
If you’re taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.
Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.
This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school’s ACT requirement of 17 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you’re happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.
ACT Superscore Policy
By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.
We weren’t able to find the school’s exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to Kean University, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 17.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements
Both the SAT and ACT have an optional essay section.
Kean University hasn’t reported their stance on SAT Essay/ACT Writing, but most likely they consider it to be optional. Thus you don’t need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you’re applying to may require it.
SAT Subject Test Requirements
Schools vary in their SAT subject test requirements. Typically, selective schools tend to require them, while most schools in the country do not.
We did not find information that Kean University requires SAT subject tests, and so most likely it does not. At least 6 months before applying, you should still doublecheck just to make sure, so you have enough time to take the test.

College GPA Calculator – Instructions
With our College GPA Calculator you may access to one of the most important tools for students. As you probably know, GPA stands for Grade Point Average. That means it is the average result from all of your grades. As calculated by the Universities of the United States, it is certainly a quite complicated system. That is we came up with our College GPA Calculator, a tool that will make such task easy for you!
What is GPA and how can we help you calculate it?
Your GPA will determine your future options when it comes to studying in the US. How does it really work?
There are two basic grade systems in the country: based on numbers and letters. Both represent the grades you receive on daily assignments and tests. Knowing those represent the first steps in calculating your GPA.
The number system is different than in other countries because the scale goes from zero to one hundred. Each numerical note corresponds to a letter note. Any note less than a C (70) is considered as a failure.
We can help you calculate your GPA by providing you with a tool that automatically makes the numbers for you. Introduce the relevant data, hit calculate and you are good to go!
How does the formula of your college GPA calculator work?
If you’d like to know how our college GPA calculator works, here is a simple explanation.
Below we present the letters with their corresponding mark:
Letter | % number |
---|---|
A | 90 to 100 |
B | 80 to 89 |
C | 70 to 79 |
D | 60 to 69 |
F | 0 to 59 |
Letters are also identified as a positive note or a negative marks. This system exists because when calculating your average, the value of the letter is rounded to the closest decimal. It would look like this:
Letter | % number |
---|---|
A | 93 to 100 |
A- | 90 to 92 |
B+ | 87 to 89 |
B | 83 to 86 |
B- | 80 to 82 |
C+ | 77 to 79 |
C | 73 to 76 |
C- | 70 to 72 |
D+ | 67 to 69 |
D | 63 to 66 |
D- | 60 to 62 |
F | Less than 60 |
How Do teachers calculate grades for GPA?
Each teacher has his own method of calculating grades as he will indicate his rules in the syllabus that they distribute at the beginning of the course.
For example: perhaps all exams in the course are worth 40 % of the final mark, homework is worth 50 % and class participation is worth 10 %. In this case, he would then take the average of the completed tasks and consider the average as 50 % of the final grade for the course.
The Scale 4.0 and how it will affect your marks
This is where the subject of the college GPA calculation gets complicated.
Your GPA is calculated on a scale from one to four. What happens is that the numerical marks (from 1 to 100) convert them to letters, and from the letter note to the new scale.
We know it’s a bit confusing, but let us explain it to you. The following table shows you the conversion:
% number | Letter | 4.0 Scale |
---|---|---|
93 to 100 | A | 4.0 |
90 to 92 | A- | 3.7 |
87 to 89 | B+ | 3.3 |
83 to 86 | B | 3.0 |
80 to 82 | B- | 2. 7 |
77 to 79 | C+ | 2.3 |
73 to 76 | C | 2.0 |
70 to 72 | C- | 1.7 |
67 to 69 | D+ | 1.3 |
63 to 66 | D | 1.0 |
60 to 62 | D- | 0.7 |
Below 60 | F | 0.0 |
As an example, let’s pretend that you introduce the following data in our College GPA calculator:
Course Name | Grade | Credits |
---|---|---|
Mathematics | B+ | 3 credits |
English | A | 3 credits |
Economy | C | 2 credits |
History | A- | 3 credits |
Each of those marks has a certain equivalent. If you look at the table above, you can match the note with its corresponding number on the 4.0 scale.
After this, we multiply that number with the number of credits the class is worth (this is different for each class, but it is usually identified by the course number).
Sounds complicated? Because it is! That is why is always better to simply use a college GPA calculator as ours!

5 | Fine | 4 |
4 | Good | 3 |
3 | Satisfactorily | 2 |
2 | Unsatisfactory | 1 |
Step 2
The scores obtained are multiplied by the number of hours for each subject and summarize the results:
(150×4) + (120×3) + (100×2) + (100×3) = 1460
Step 3
We find the sum of hours spent on the study of all subjects:
150 + 120 + 100 + 100 = 470
Step 4
Divide the result of calculations of step 2 by the result of calculations of step 3:
1460/470 = 3.1
The result obtained will be the GPA indicator.
How to calculate the GPA of a Russian diploma
If you need to calculate the GPA of a diploma, then most likely, the assessment of some subjects will look like “pass” or “fail”. Each university evaluates them differently: some give them the highest score, and some do not take into account at all.
Check this information with a university representative before submitting documents or contact IQ Consultancy for help.We cooperate with leading universities abroad and know the specifics of admission to each of them.
If GPA is low
The GPA indicator allows you to assess the chances of admission to the selected university. However, there are several nuances to consider:
- Many universities pay attention not to the average mark of the certificate as a whole, but to your results in specialized subjects. Also, universities often do not take into account non-academic subjects such as singing.
- The final decision of the admissions committee is influenced by how you write your motivation letter, essay, interview and other entrance tests.
- Sometimes a poor GPA can be compensated for through portfolio, work experience, or extracurricular achievement. But, if you are planning to enter a top university, you should not count on it.
- You can use our advice and first go to a university with less stringent requirements, and then transfer.

How to calculate GPA and enter an American university
Blog / Study in the USA
How to calculate your GPA? Entering an American university is not an easy task. In order for a student to be accepted into a bachelor’s or master’s program, he must meet the admission requirements of US universities. The most famous universities in the United States, and the top rated ones, will require students to have a high grade point or GPA – Grade Point Average .
Grade Point Average (GPA) must be considered when choosing a US university and training program. The higher the university ranking, the higher the GPA entrance score
In this article, we will show you several ways to calculate your GPA for admission to an American university. Immediately we want to draw your attention to the fact that most US universities will require you to enter a self-calculated score. There are universities that will not require you to count the GPA on their own, so they have a department that deals with such issues. It will be enough just to send your current grades, certificate or bachelor’s degree to these educational institutions.
Find out if you need to calculate GPA yourself:

How to calculate your GPA yourself?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is the average score of all grades in your diploma / certificate during training. A certain threshold of the average mark is a prerequisite for admission to most foreign universities. Calculating GPA using a simple formula will be useful when choosing an educational institution. It primarily reflects your average performance in all subjects, rather than specific hobbies and interests. Most likely, the admissions committee will pay attention to academic performance in specialized subjects and possibly recalculate the GPA for verification. But you need to understand that if your GPA is significantly less than the passing grade for a given university, the chances that you will be able to enroll are not so great.
The method for calculating GPA at a particular university is different and may vary. A number of universities request a GPA for the last 3 years of study, and some request a GPA for certain subjects. Therefore, the following formula may not apply in all cases. But if you want to assess your chances of admission and determine the list of universities, then this method will suit you.
GPA Calculation Example
Suppose you want to calculate the GPA for 4 subjects. In the certificate or diploma, next to the grade, you can find the number of hours devoted to each of the subjects. Here is an example of what 4 subjects look like in a diploma or certificate:
Physics (72) good
Chemistry (110) excellent
Mathematics (150) excellent
Geometry (120) satisfactory
the subject is multiplied by its assessment.Generally, the GPA is calculated on the basis of the 4-point grading system that is used in the United States and other countries. Accordingly, the Russian grade “excellent” corresponds to 4 points, “good” to 3 points, “satisfactory” to 2 points, and so on. Therefore, in this case, the average score is calculated as follows:
1. Multiply the score by the number of hours for each subject
72×3 + 110×4 + 150×4 + 120×2 = 1496
2. Find the sum of hours spent on all subjects
72 + 110 + 150 + 120 = 452
3.We divide the result of calculations of 1 step by the result of calculations of 2 steps
1496/452 = 3.31.
In this case, the GPA is 3.31.
Taking into account “credits” when calculating GPA
As for admission after university, then for sure there are subjects in your diploma for which instead of an assessment there is a credit. How it affects the GPA depends, again, on the specific university. In most cases, items without a rating are not taken into account at all in the calculation, but it is better to clarify, since the GPA indicator can vary significantly depending on the calculation.
For example, in addition to the above subjects, you have 2 subjects in your diploma for which it is simply “credit”:
Defectology (100) credit
Psychology (200) credit
Usually credit is taken for an “excellent” grade. Thus, the GPA calculation will be as follows:
(72×3 + 110×4 + 150×4 + 120×2 + 100×4 + 200×4) / (72 + 110 + 150 + 120+ 100 + 200) = 2696/752 = 3.58.
Obviously, using this method, you will get a much higher GPA. But it is imperative to check with the contact person from the university, since in any case you send a copy of your diploma with grades, and if this calculation is not applicable at the university, an overestimated indicator can be considered as hackwork, which can significantly reduce the chances of admission.
If the GPA is low
If you understand that the GPA is not the strong point of your application, then it is better to focus on other documents that you submit upon admission, and not try to overestimate the average score by artificial methods – the admissions committee will see all your grades. There is no need to panic, as the GPA is only part of your application and it is reviewed against your other metrics besides your average performance.
It is better to pay more attention to the motivation letter, in which you can explain controversial points of the academic background and better reveal your strengths.Cover up the low GPA with your past achievements. For example, even a regular coursework can come off as a plus in a resume, since, for example, in the USA there are no such mandatory assignments for bachelor students at all, but there are similar student projects, successful participation in which gives an advantage to the future applicant.
If the GPA score is below 2.5, you can no longer count on admission to the top universities in the United States. .
But there are universities that will accept you on condition that you complete an additional preparatory program. The duration of the preparation program is determined by the level of the English language and your GPA, it can be from 1 to 3 semesters.

There are many GPA calculators on the network that exist in paid and free versions and, in essence, are almost no different.Usually, a simple method is used for the calculation without taking offsets. You can also find the average score calculator on many official websites of universities or read the FAQ, in which you can clarify the calculation method.

How to calculate GPA – average score of diploma or certificate
For admission to US universities, you must provide a GPA (Graduate Point Average) and a transcript of grades. How to correctly recalculate the average grade of a diploma or certificate for the American GPA system, we will tell you in this article.
What is GPA
Grade Point Average (GPA) is the average score of a diploma (if you are applying to a master’s or doctoral program) or a school certificate (when applying to a bachelor’s program). It shows the overall performance of the student. In the American grading system, the highest score is 4.0, in the Russian one – 5.0.
Getting GPA 4.0 in America is difficult. But it is not so difficult for students from Russia.
In the United States, information on the average score is required not only for admission to university, but also for employment. Also, each university determines its requirements for the GPA of prospective students and sets a lower threshold for the average score. Therefore, it is worth checking the GPA for compliance with the requirements of a particular educational institution before filling out the Application Form.
The average lower GPA threshold for US universities is 3.0-3.5, but for prestigious Ivy League universities it is above 4.0.
Brown University | 4.08 |
Dartmouth College’s | 4.09 |
Columbia University | 4.12 |
Harvard University | 4.18 |
University of Pennsylvania | 3.9 |
Princeton University | 3.9 |
Yale University | 4.13 |
Cornell University | 3.9 |
Ivy League universities have the highest GPA threshold requirements
But why do some Ivy League universities have GPA higher than the maximum score of 4.0? Because top universities prefer to calculate the GPA based on the complexity of the course. This is called the Weighted GPA .
GPA: Weighted and unweighted
The main difference between Weighted and Unweighted GPA is how they are calculated:
- Unweighted GPA – is the average, when calculating the score for each subject has the same weight.
- Weighted GPA – GPA, which takes into account the difficulty and depth of the subjects for which the marks are given.
For example, if a student has “excellent” in the subjects “Introduction to Microeconomics”, “Introduction to Sociology” and “Introduction to Philosophy”, then his GPA will be lower than that of a student who took the full course of the profile subject, consisting of from three parts: “Introduction to Microeconomics”, “Microeconomics (I level)”, “Microeconomics (II level)”.
How to calculate GPA:
calculator
Use the calculator to calculate the GPA. To do this, you will need a certificate / diploma with grades and names of subjects, as well as the number of credits / hours for them.
The school certificate usually does not indicate the number of hours in a subject. This information can be found in the school curriculum. In the diploma, the hours are indicated on the insert with grades (attachment to the diploma)
Go to the website and select your country in the drop-down menu, and then enter the data for each subject from the diploma / certificate – into the table subject name, number of hours and grade.
Subjects should be entered in English, and in the Grade column – marks according to the Russian system.
When you have filled in all the data, press the left button Calculate GPA. Your result will appear.
The calculator will automatically translate the grades into the American system and calculate the average grade. You don’t have to do any calculations. You are required to correctly enter the data into the table.
How to calculate GPA yourself
You can do the calculation yourself, for example, if you want to check the data of the calculator. To do this, follow our instructions.
Step 1. Translate Russian estimates into the American system.
Russian grade | Designation | 4-point scale (USA) |
5 | Excellent | 4 |
4 | Good | 3 |
3 | Satisfactory | 2 |
2 | Unsatisfactory | 1 |
Example of translation of grades:
Item | Number of hours | Russian estimate | American estimate |
Philosophy | 102 | Excellent | 4 |
Domestic history | Good | 3 | |
Russian language and speech culture | 151 | Good | 3 |
Mathematics | 200 | Satisfactory | 2 |
Step 2 .Multiply your American grades by the number of hours for each subject and add it all up.
4 * 102 (Philosophy) + 3 * 189 (Domestic history) + 3 * 151 (Russian language) + 2 * 200 (Mathematics) = 1 828
Grade for the subject Philosophy (4) multiply by the number of hours (102) add the mark for the Patriotic history (3) multiplied by the number of hours (189), make the same calculations with the rest of the subjects.
Step 3 .We count the total number of hours in all subjects:
102 + 189 + 151 + 200 = 642
Step 4. Divide the sum of scores including hours (1 828) by the total number of hours (642).
1828 ÷ 642 = 2.84
Total : Your GPA in four subjects is 2.84.
Calculations are made with all subjects that have an assessment in your diploma / certificate.
When calculating GPA, credits and course credits are usually not taken into account. But check with the university, according to what rules they consider GPA: sometimes credits can be equated with the mark “excellent”, and if you do not specify them, then your GPA will be lower.
How to enter an American university and move to the USA in two months, learn from the book “How to enter a US university in 2 months.”
What to do if the GPA is low
If you have already graduated from school / university, you will not be able to change the average grade of the certificate / diploma. However, in addition to the GPA, other factors influence the success of admission to a university: essay, motivation letter, recommendations, results of international exams: IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT.Do not give up hope and try to compensate for the low GPA with other achievements, work experience and brilliantly passed entrance exams.
And in your motivation letter, you can explain why your GPA leaves much to be desired. For tips on how to write such letters, see our Write-Do-Do guide.
Transcript for American University
Together with the GPA, foreign universities are asking for a transcript in English.
What is transcript
The transcript is the same insert in the Russian diploma, recording the progress, the courses / subjects taken and their duration.
- For admission to the undergraduate program, you must provide information for grades 9-11.
- For admission to the master’s program, the transcript must contain information about the subjects taken within the bachelor’s program.
The official transcript for the certificate can be obtained from the school administration. If you have not graduated from school / university yet , you can make a preliminary transcript of the grades. For this you need:
- For schoolchildren: write out the final grades received for grades 9-11 and count the number of hours in each subject.
- Students: make an independent transcript based on the information from the grade book.
The transcript must be translated into English and must be notarized . The translation must be accompanied by Explanatory Note , which contains information about the rating system in your country.
Seal the transcript and the explanatory note in an envelope, put the stamp of the university and ask the dean of the faculty or the head of the school to sign. On the envelope, you must indicate the return address of the educational institution, as if the letter was sent from there.

How to calculate the average grade of the certificate: instructions for applicants
The Ministry of Education and Science has published instructions on how applicants can calculate their GPA.
To the topic Applicants have already created almost 90 thousand electronic cabinets
It is calculated on a 12-point scale rounded to tenths. The score is calculated as the arithmetic mean of all marks indicated in the appendix to the certificate (invariant part, variable part of the state final attestation).
Only those subjects for which you received “exempt” / “passed”, as well as electives, are not counted.
How to calculate the average grade of the certificate?
The calculation is carried out as follows: the number of subjects for which marks are given, divided by the sum of the same points. For example, if you have 22 subjects for which grades are given, then divide that number by the sum of those grades (for example, 201). So, your average score will be – 201: 22 = 9.136 … ≈9.1.
How do I round a decimal to the first decimal place? Discard all decimal places after the first digit. If the first of the discarded digits was higher than 5 (inclusive), then increase the last left digit by one.
And if the first of the discarded digits is from 0 to 4 (inclusive), then the previous digit must be written unchanged.
For graduates of previous years who received their marks in the document on complete general secondary education on a 5-point scale , points are taken into account as follows:
- “3” answers “6”,
- “4” answers “9”,
- “5” answers “12”.
You can also use the score calculator. It automatically calculates the score – for the applicant, you just need to enter all the marks from the certificate into it. The correctness of the calculation will be checked by the admissions committees of higher educational institutions.
Recall that in 2020 universities will be able to accept almost 6% more bachelors on the budget compared to last year.

90,000 Higher school got average scores – Newspaper Kommersant No. 165 (4950) dated 09/05/2012
Yesterday, the Higher School of Economics presented the 2012 quality rating of universities. More than 500 Russian state universities are ranked in it on the basis of the average passing score of the USE, which was required for applicants to enter the budget departments.According to the authors of the rating, the situation in Russian higher education has improved somewhat, but engineering universities still attract only C grade students.
The rating of universities was prepared by experts from the Higher School of Economics (HSE) on the order of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation (it is curious that the HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov is the head of the Education Commission of the RF OP). The main criterion is the average USE score of applicants enrolled in the first year. It depends on the minimum passing scores set by the university administration. Thus, the list shows which universities are popular with applicants, and at the same time makes it clear where it is easier for them to enter. And the public sees which universities are willing to accept even C-grade students – to preserve budgetary funding.
Educational institutions in the ranking are divided by areas of training. Among the “classical universities” the situation has not changed over the year: the Lomonosov Moscow State University received the first place (average USE score 84.6), followed by St. Petersburg State University (83.3) and Novosibirsk State University (76.8).But the top three among the “socio-economic” universities have changed radically. The first, as in 2011, was recognized as MGIMO, where excellent students with an average score of 92.3 were admitted. On the other hand, the Higher School of Economics came in second with 86.4 points (last year this line was occupied by the Kutafin Moscow Law Academy), the Plekhanov Russian Economic Academy came in third with 82.6 points (displaced the Financial University under the government of the Russian Federation).
In addition, the rating assesses technical universities (as before, MIPT is in first place), medical (the title of the best kept by St.Petersburg Pavlov University), agrarian (the first was the Timiryazev Russian State Agrarian University, sixth place) and other directions.
The main changes have occurred not even with educational leaders, but with ordinary universities. A number of universities have raised the passing score so as not to take outright C grade students. “The monitoring results show that the quality of the reception has generally improved,” said Mr. Kuzminov. According to the HSE Rector, medical universities demonstrated a particularly strict selection: in 83% of such educational institutions, more than half of the freshmen are excellent students (more than 80 points). The industry average is 75 out of 100.
“Pedagogical education has long been a problem group in terms of the quality of admission, in many respects students with C grade went to pedagogical universities,” reminded Mr. Kuzminov.- Today we can firmly say that this situation has begun to change. Group average: 61.5 out of 100, a solid four. There are less than 10% of those pedagogical universities that have received mostly C grade students. “
The most problematic areas are light industry technologies, agriculture and fisheries, mechanical engineering, forestry, and weapons. According to experts, this is largely to blame for the heads of the respective enterprises, who are lobbying for an increase in the budgetary admission numbers. “In such a strange way they are trying to solve the problems of their industries and enterprises,” Mr. Kuzminov said.“Instead of paying normal salaries, they persuade the state to produce three to four times more specialists. Maybe someone will come even for a low salary. “
Last year, the then head of the Ministry of Education and Science Andrei Fursenko took part in the presentation of the rating, who promised to “cut off” budget places from unpopular universities. Yesterday his successor Dmitry Livanov also harshly commented on the results of the HSE study: “Universities that cannot offer applicants interesting and popular educational programs should leave the educational field.”

90,000 How to calculate the average score of a certificate and diploma when entering a foreign university?
Calculate average score ONLINE >>
Very often, graduates of universities and schools need to calculate the average score of the obtained certificate. It may be required when entering a foreign university, when applying for a job. We will tell you what a GPA is, how to correctly calculate your GPA and whether you need to take credits into account.
What is GPA
GPA is the GPA of a diploma or certificate, an overall indicator of a schoolchild’s or student’s performance. This abbreviation stands for grade point average. When filling out an application for preparatory programs, first higher education and admission to a master’s degree abroad, many universities require you to inform them of the applicant’s GPA. So, most US universities will require applicants to specify the GPA. Read more about applying for a bachelor’s degree in the USA here, about how to enter a master’s program in the USA – here.
How to calculate GPA
When calculating the GPA, all grades indicated in the certificate or diploma are taken into account. These can be final grades: in subjects, for term papers and theses, for state exams. If you already have a document on education in your hands, you do not need to take into account any intermediate grades that you put down in your school electronic journal or grade book.
The next point concerns only students: whether it is necessary to take credits into account and if so, how exactly to take them into account.
If your university uses a 5-point system of assessment of knowledge plus “pass / fail”, students entering foreign universities can calculate the average grade of the diploma in one of two ways:
- “ Credits” are taken into account. “Pass” = 5 points, “fail” = 0 points. Diploma grade point average = arithmetic mean of points for all subjects in the insert, including “pass” and “fail”.
- “Credits” are not taken into account. Grade point average of the diploma = the arithmetic mean of all the points received.
The arithmetic mean of both school performance and diploma grades is calculated according to the formula:
GPA = “the sum of all grades received” divided by “number of items”.
Example of GPA calculation
In the above example, we show the calculation of the average score for students, but students count according to the same scheme. Since most schools do not pass credits, this type of performance assessment is not included in the calculation either.
Undergraduate student of the program “Management of the organization” received the following marks:
No. | Item Name | Grade |
---|---|---|
1 | Philosophy | |
2 | Sociology | |
3 | Domestic history | Placement |
4 | Jurisprudence | Placement |
5 | English | 5 (Excellent) |
6 | Mathematics | 5 (Excellent) |
7 | Probability theory | Placement |
8 | Mathematical Statistics | |
9 | Social Informatics | |
10 | Basics of Management | |
11 | Management history | Placement |
12 | Economic theory | |
13 | History of Sociology | 3 (Satisfied) |
14 | Organization Theory | |
Total | 14 items | 4 credits and 10 exams |
According to the formula indicated above, the average score of the diploma will be equal to:
64/14 = 4.64 including credits or
44/10 = 4.4 – if offsets are not taken into account.
If the student has no “failures”, the first calculation system raises the average score of the student’s diploma. Many universities do not determine the procedure for calculating the average score of the diploma, and the choice of the calculation method remains with the applicant.
How to find out the GPA if your studies have not been completed yet
As a rule, admission to a foreign university begins in a year or a year and a half. If at this time a schoolchild or student is still studying, he can independently calculate the average grade based on intermediate grades in order to assess his chances of admission. In this case, the GPA calculation can be based on grades for:
1. Only completed subjects for which final grades have already been set.
2. All completed and most recent grades for unfinished items.
When sending an official application to a university, if a certificate or diploma has not yet been received, the applicant must provide a transcript – a letter with grades, in which the university will indicate the average score. In addition, the applicant must inform the university about the deadlines for the provision of final grades.
How to specify the GPA in the application for admission
The rule of indicating the GPA in the application for admission is simple: indicate not only the average score, but also tell the admissions committee the maximum possible score on your program, since in different countries the maximum score can be 4, 5 or 10 points.
For example: if your university / school has a 5-point grading system and your GPA is, say, 4.1, then in your application for admission you need to say “GPA 4.1 out of 5”.
Indicate the maximum GPA score
When reporting the average grade of the diploma, do not forget to indicate the maximum possible grade. In the above example, this would be “4.64 out of 5” or “4.4 out of 5” . The diploma of the first higher education or the transcript of the applicant will be attached to the application for admission, so the university in any case will see all your grades.

GPA in educational systems of the world
In the world university practice, several methods of calculating the average mark are most common. So, in Britain, grades from the first years are often not taken into account, and in the United States and Europe, the average score is calculated taking into account the credit hours that the student has gained (and the weight of credits in America and Europe is different).
In order to assess their chances of admission to a particular university, American and European students must find out their GPA and, possibly, transfer it to another educational system. To do this, they use special online calculators, but it is important to note that the result they get when they transfer to a foreign educational system is not official. The official translation of the GPA into other educational systems (for example, between Britain and the United States) is carried out by special organizations.
