Fedorov left behind: Malkin moved into second place in points behind Ovechkin
Pittsburgh Pittsburgh forward Evgeni Malkin scored 1,180 career NHL points with his 12th goal of the season, surpassing Sergei Fedorov on the all-time list of top Russian scorers to a clean second behind Alexander Ovechkin. Evgeny Svechnikov and Yakov Trenin helped their teams win with goals, and Klim Kostin scored a brace, but still remained in the shadow of Connor McDavid. Gazeta.Ru presents an overview of the NHL game day.
Pittsburgh Penguins – New Jersey Devils – 2:4
The game at PPG Paints Arena was one of the most interesting New Year’s Eve game days in the NHL. Pittsburgh and New Jersey are having a good season, going into the playoff zone and being rivals in the Capital Division. But at the same time, right now, both of them are frankly unsuccessful.
The Penguins have lost three games in a row and have only won one in their last five games. The Devils had two defeats in a row, but in the last nine meetings, the young and daring team of Lindy Ruff, who started the season very cheerfully, managed to win only once. The situation urgently needed to be broken.
However, everything started very badly for the guests. The “Devils” spent the first period with an advantage, but in one of their attacks, Evgeni Malkin took the puck from the defender on the blue line, ran to the rendezvous with Vitek Vanechek and brilliantly shot to the top nine!
For Malkin, this goal was the 12th of the season, but the main thing is that he scored his 1180th (456 + 724) point in the NHL and beat Sergey Fedorov, with whom he shared second place in the history of Russian scorers.
Only Alexander Ovechkin, leading the pursuit of Wayne Gretzky in the list of snipers in the world’s strongest league in history, remains ahead. But it will be unrealistic to get the captain of Washington, since he has 1452 points and continues his career.
At the start of the second, the Devils’ young leader Jack Hughes restored the balance by converting a majority, but then Jeff Carter brought the Penguins back into the lead.
It’s just lately that Mike Sullivan’s team has been bad at keeping the edge. The apogee happened in the previous match, when Pittsburgh was leading 4-0 at Detroit, but managed to squander the entire advantage and lose in overtime (4:5 OT).
So New Jersey was able to turn everything around and snatch victory, and in regular time. The key to success was the end of the second period and the work of opponents in special teams. Pittsburgh managed not to use any of its nine majority attempts in this meeting and also conceded, having a player more, 38 seconds before the end of the second period from Niko Hishir.
By this time, the scoreboard was already equal, because a couple of minutes earlier, Dougie Hamilton, who had connected forward to the positional defender, hit Tristan Jerry.
It is interesting that Hamilton in this meeting, having given an assist to Hughes for the first goal, scored 400 points in his career, and scored 401 with an abandoned puck. At the same time, New Jersey is 18-0-1 this season if it leads after two periods.
The Devils had a minimal advantage until the last, but five seconds before the end, Hughes scored a double and set the final score.
Whoever is doing well is Carolina, which was already considered one of the contenders for the Stanley Cup, but now has gained such momentum that it is confidently leading the league.
The Hurricanes came into the matchup against the strong, but playing neither shaky nor shaky Florida, on a series of 15 meetings with scored points and nine victories in a row.
The first is the longest among all teams this season, and the second is a repeat of the club record. Well, now it’s new and round – ten wins in a row.
The Hurricanes goal this time was defended not by Petr Kochetkov, but by Finn Antti Raanta, who played great and kept a clean sheet. At the same time, this is his second shutout in a row, and since Kochetkov did the same thing this season, Carolina became the third team in league history with such an achievement in the first 36 games of the season. The last time Los Angeles did this was in the 2013/14 season, and before that, Montreal did it in the 1932/33 campaign.
In addition, Raanta has kept clean sheets 17 times over the last two seasons, and the Hurricanes have become the fifth team in the NHL to go clean sheets four times in a winning streak of ten games or more.
At the Panthers’ goal, Spencer Knight also played great and saved 30 shots, but everything was decided by the hosts’ play in the majority. The first three goals flew into the gates of “Florida” precisely when the opponent sold too much.
In the second case, Russian Andrey Svechnikov excelled, hitting the target with a chic wrist throw in the top nine. This is already the 19th goal of the forward who is the best sniper of the forward team this season.
Seattle Cracken – Edmonton Oilers – 2:7
Edmonton in an away match against Seattle won a super-big victory, knocking the opponent out of the playoff zone.
Russian Klim Kostin, who has been playing for the Oilers since this season, scored a double. He now has four goals in the championship.
But he failed to become the main character. For example, Zach Hyman scored 2+1 in the match, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored four assists, and the captain of the Oilers again showed himself to be a real king.
Connor McDavid scored 70 (32+38) points in this match in just 37 games. Faster from season-1990/91 only Mario Lemieux (thrice) and Jaromir Jagr did it, and Adam Oates and Wayne Gretzky did it again at the same speed.
And that’s the victory Edmonton won in the match, which was missed by the team’s second superstar, Leon Draisaitl, due to injury.
Anaheim Ducks – Nashville Predators – 1:6
Russian Yakov Trenin also reached the four-goal mark this season, playing great in a foreign zone after a face-off.
