How does Curt Styres’ appointment impact the Iroquois Nationals. What makes the Iroquois Nationals a unique force in international lacrosse. How has the team’s performance evolved over recent years. What strategies are being implemented to enhance their competitiveness on the global stage.
Curt Styres: A Game-Changing Appointment for Iroquois Nationals
In a significant move for the Iroquois Nationals lacrosse program, Curt Styres has been named the general manager for the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. This appointment marks a new chapter for the four-time silver medalists as they prepare to compete in Langley, BC.
Styres, a Mohawk from Six Nations, brings a wealth of experience and success to the role. His track record as the owner and general manager of the Rochester Knighthawks in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) speaks volumes about his ability to build winning teams.
Styres’ Impressive Credentials
- Eight seasons as Knighthawks’ GM
- Six playoff appearances
- Four Finals appearances
- Three consecutive championships (2012-2014)
- Two-time General Manager of the Year (2011, 2018)
- Executive of the Year (2011)
Can Styres replicate his NLL success with the Iroquois Nationals? His appointment has generated considerable excitement and optimism within the lacrosse community.
The Iroquois Nationals: A Unique Force in International Lacrosse
The Iroquois Nationals hold a special place in international lacrosse. As the only indigenous-led team sanctioned to compete in international lacrosse competitions, they represent the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, also known as the Six Nations.
This team’s participation in world championships is not just about sports; it’s a powerful statement of cultural identity and sovereignty. The Iroquois are recognized as the originators of lacrosse, which they consider a sacred game with deep spiritual significance.
Cultural Significance of the Iroquois Nationals
- Representation of indigenous heritage
- Promotion of Haudenosaunee culture
- Demonstration of athletic excellence
- Inspiration for indigenous youth
How does the team’s cultural significance impact their performance on the field? Many players describe feeling a deep sense of pride and responsibility when representing their people, which often translates into passionate and inspired play.
Recent Performances and Evolving Competitiveness
The Iroquois Nationals have consistently proven themselves as a top-tier team in international lacrosse. Their four silver medals in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship underscore their status as serious contenders on the global stage.
In field lacrosse, the team has also shown impressive results. They secured bronze medals in the 2014 and 2018 World Lacrosse Championship, demonstrating their ability to compete with lacrosse powerhouses like the United States and Canada.
Notable Recent Achievements
- Silver medal at the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship
- Bronze medal at the 2018 World Lacrosse Championship
- Consistent top-3 finishes in major international tournaments
Is the team on an upward trajectory? The consistent podium finishes suggest that the Iroquois Nationals are narrowing the gap with the traditional lacrosse superpowers and could be on the verge of a breakthrough gold medal performance.
Strategies for Enhancing Global Competitiveness
With Curt Styres at the helm, the Iroquois Nationals are implementing several strategies to boost their competitiveness on the international stage. These approaches draw from Styres’ successful tenure with the Rochester Knighthawks and are tailored to the unique strengths of the Iroquois team.
Key Strategic Elements
- Professional management approach
- Enhanced player development programs
- Incorporation of advanced analytics
- Building a strong coaching and support staff
- Fostering synergy between professional and national team structures
How will these strategies translate to on-field success? By adopting professional management techniques and leveraging data-driven insights, the team aims to optimize player performance and tactical decision-making.
The Synergy Between Professional and National Team Structures
One of the most intriguing aspects of Styres’ appointment is the potential for increased collaboration between professional lacrosse organizations and the Iroquois Nationals program. This synergy could provide numerous benefits for player development and team performance.
Ansley Jemison, Executive Director of Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse, highlighted the importance of this connection: “It’s great for our communities to see the Knighthawks, a professional organization, and our national organization come together. It’s one of those synergies we like to see, having somebody who’s in the professional ranks coming on board and helping us with our national teams.”
Potential Benefits of Professional-National Team Synergy
- Access to advanced training facilities and methods
- Exposure to high-level competition year-round
- Transfer of professional management practices to the national program
- Enhanced scouting and talent identification processes
- Increased media exposure and sponsorship opportunities
Will this synergy lead to improved results in international competitions? While it’s too early to say definitively, the cross-pollination of ideas and resources between professional and national team structures has the potential to elevate the Iroquois Nationals’ performance significantly.
Building a World-Class Support Staff
Central to Styres’ strategy for success is the assembly of a top-tier support staff. Drawing from his experience with the Rochester Knighthawks, Styres aims to surround the Iroquois Nationals with experienced professionals who can contribute to all aspects of the team’s performance.
Key Personnel in Styres’ Knighthawks Organization
- Mike Hasen, Pat O’Toole, and Mike Accursi (Knighthawks Hall of Famers)
- Jason Johnson and Marshall Abrams (Lacrosse experts)
- Jody Gage (VP of Player Personnel)
- Stuart Brown (Head scout and founder of Edge Lacrosse)
- Kevin Hill (Former goalie and Six Nations product)
- Bruce Clark (Western Scout)
- Gewas Schindler (Former Iroquois Nationals coach and GM)
- Jake Henhawk (Six Nations Arrows GM)
- Duane Jacobs (Six Nations Chiefs GM)
How will this experienced staff contribute to the Iroquois Nationals’ success? The diverse skillsets and deep lacrosse knowledge of these individuals should provide comprehensive support in areas such as player evaluation, tactical planning, and performance analysis.
Leveraging Analytics and Player Development
In the modern sports landscape, data-driven decision making has become increasingly crucial. Styres’ approach with the Knighthawks emphasized the use of analytics and focused player development, a strategy he’s likely to implement with the Iroquois Nationals.
By incorporating advanced metrics and performance analysis, the team can gain valuable insights into player strengths, opponent tendencies, and strategic opportunities. This data-driven approach, combined with targeted player development programs, could give the Iroquois Nationals a competitive edge in international competitions.
Key Areas for Analytics and Player Development
- Performance metrics analysis
- Opponent scouting and game planning
- Individualized training programs
- Tactical adjustments based on data insights
- Talent identification and recruitment
Can analytics truly make a difference in a sport as fluid and fast-paced as lacrosse? While the human element will always be crucial, teams that effectively leverage data and analytics often gain subtle advantages that can prove decisive at the highest levels of competition.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
As the Iroquois Nationals prepare for future international competitions, they face both challenges and opportunities. The team must balance their traditional approach to the game with modern professional techniques, all while competing against well-funded national programs from larger countries.
However, the appointment of Curt Styres and the implementation of his proven strategies present a significant opportunity for growth and success. The team’s unique cultural heritage, combined with cutting-edge management and training approaches, could prove to be a powerful formula for success on the international stage.
Key Factors for Future Success
- Balancing tradition with modern techniques
- Continuing to develop young talent
- Securing adequate funding and resources
- Maintaining strong connections with professional lacrosse leagues
- Leveraging the team’s unique identity and passionate fan base
Will the Iroquois Nationals breakthrough to win gold at a major international tournament in the near future? While predicting sports outcomes is always challenging, the pieces appear to be falling into place for the team to make a serious run at the top spot on the podium.
As lacrosse continues to grow globally and potentially moves closer to Olympic inclusion, the Iroquois Nationals find themselves in a unique position. They represent not just a team, but a people and a culture inextricably linked to the sport’s origins. With strong leadership, strategic planning, and the passionate support of their community, the Iroquois Nationals are poised to write exciting new chapters in their storied lacrosse history.
The lacrosse world will be watching closely as this proud and talented team continues its quest for international glory, carrying with them the hopes and dreams of the Haudenosaunee people and inspiring indigenous athletes around the globe. The journey of the Iroquois Nationals is about more than just wins and losses; it’s a powerful narrative of cultural resilience, athletic excellence, and the enduring spirit of a game that has been played for centuries.
Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse – Field, Indoor, Box Men’s Lax Teams
(October 21, 2018) The Iroquois Nationals have named Curt Styres the general manager for the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. The Rochester Knighthawks Owner and General Manager will lead the four-time silver medalists into next year’s worlds in Langley, BC.“It’s a huge honor to be part of the process of putting together a world team,” said Styres. “Just to be part of the history of the team is pretty incredible.”
Over the past two decades, the Mohawk from Six Nations has established himself as one of the top sports executives in North America. He recently completed his eighth season as the Knighthawks’ GM. During his tenure, the Knighthawks have advanced to the playoffs six times, reached the Finals on four occasions and won a league-record three straight championships from 2012-14. In 2011, he was named the winner of the General Manager of the Year and Executive of the Year awards.
This past season, which was his 10th as the franchise’s owner, Styres added a second General Manager of the Year award after retooling the Knighthawks back into a Cup contender. It was a fantastic turnaround over a two-year period for the Knighthawks, who returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. He rebuilt the roster through trades, free agent signings, and the draft.
The success of the Knighthawks strengthened Styres’ bid to become the Iroquois Nationals general manager.
“It’s a great opportunity for our program to have somebody of the caliber of Curt coming on board,” said Ansley Jemison, who is the Executive Director of Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse. “He brings professionalism, knowledge, and understanding of the game. Similar to the Knighthawks, he knows what it takes to build a program. Now, he is taking his talents to the world level and having the opportunity to compete internationally. It’s a new and exciting moment.”
“A lot of people have seen what he’s done with the Knighthawks and where he has taken them in terms of building (a winner),” he added. “It’s great for our communities to see the Knighthawks, a professional organization, and our national organization come together. It’s one of those synergies we like to see, having somebody who’s in the professional ranks coming on board and helping us with our national teams.”
Since Styres bought the Knighthawks on June 19, 2008, Rochester has won 28 year-end league awards and earned 12 All-Pro honors. In 2017-18, Rochester was recognized a team-record 10 times by the NLL. The Knighthawks had three All-Pros and set a franchise record with three All-Rookie Team selections.
In his role as GM with the Knighthawks, Styres has assembled highly-successful coaching and lacrosse operations staffs. His current staff includes Knighthawks Hall of Famers Mike Hasen, Pat O’Toole, and Mike Accursi. They are complemented by lacrosse experts Jason Johnson and Marshall Abrams.
On the lacrosse operations side, Styres has hired skilled professionals who are well-versed in analytics and player development. The seasoned group of veterans includes Knighthawks Hall of Famer Jody Gage, who is the team’s VP of Player Personnel, and head scout Stuart Brown, who is the founder of highly-successful Edge Lacrosse. Former goalie and Six Nations product Kevin Hill is the second-longest tenured member, having first started with the Knighthawks in 2011.
Bruce Clark made the move to the professional lacrosse ranks as he accepted the other Western Scouting job with the Knighthawks in 2012.
Gewas Schindler joined the team in 2016 after serving as a coach, general manager and director for the Iroquois Nationals for five and a half years. Before the 2017-18 campaign, Styres strengthened the department with the signing of Six Nations Arrows GM Jake Henhawk and Six Nations Chiefs General Manager Duane Jacobs.
Styres has a history of building winners.
In 2009, he added a second professional lacrosse team to his portfolio by operating the Toronto Nationals of Major League Lacrosse. Stocked with Canadian and Iroquois talent, the Nats became the first Canadian team to win the 2009 Steinfeld Cup. In 2010, some of those same players powered Team Canada to its first FIL World Lacrosse Championship since 1978.
Styres plans to use the same blueprint to construct his staff for the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. Abrams, who played for the Iroquois at two WILC tournaments, admitted that Styres’ management style will benefit the Nationals.
“First of all, choosing Curt was a good step in the right direction for the Iroquois,” said Abrams. “We are having more of our people in high-level positions in lacrosse; I think that’s going to breed success for our program.
“Curt will bring his team-first attitude. Every guy on that roster is just as important as the next guy. I think that’s going to play well into the success of that team.”
Styres is uniquely qualified for the position of GM of the Iroquois Nationals because he has dedicated his life to not only growing the game at the professional level but the youth level as well. He has spent countless hours coaching and managing teams and scouting talent in Six Nations. Styres also played for the Iroquois during the team’s tour of England in 1984.
“Curt is a good choice for GM because I don’t think anyone has seen more lacrosse over the past eight years than him,” said Iroquois veteran and Knighthawks forward Cody Jamieson. “He is a guy who knows almost every player in the league, knows their stats and knows their tendencies. I don’t think anyone is as prepared as him to take on a tournament like this.”
In 1998, Styres began his career in lacrosse as a scout for the Six Nations Arrows lacrosse team. Six years later, he partnered with the Junior “A” team and opened the 3,000-seat Iroquois Lacrosse Arena (ILA). Styres, who founded Arrow Express Sports (AES), manages and operates the arena, which gives local athletes a place to improve their skills, and it has led to one of the strongest youth programs in Canada.
Arrow Express Sports has also taken the game outside its borders through its support of TeamEights, which provides school communities with an opportunity to participate in lacrosse. The program was developed, implemented and co-founded by Jamieson. Stressing the core values of equity, honor, and respect, students learn fundamental lacrosse skills, tools to live an active lifestyle and the indigenous history behind the game. Through a partnership with Under Armour® Lacrosse, each school receives 30 sticks to ensure that the game remains a part of the school community for years to come.
“We introduce lacrosse to schools and kids who may not have heard or seen the sport,” said Jamieson. “I talk about where the game came from and how I use it to heal because it’s a medicine game.”
Two players who benefitted from the support of Arrow Express Sports and the world-class facility at the ILA are Jamieson and Sid Smith. Both Six Nations products broke into professional lacrosse after being selected first overall in the NLL Entry Draft. The former Arrows’ captains played significant roles in Rochester winning three straight championships. During the run, Jamieson became only the second player in NLL history to win back-to-back Championship Game MVP Awards and was in the running for a third in 2014. That season, he was, however, honored as the regular season most valuable player. Smith has been the steady team captain and was the first to hoist the Cup after the Knighthawks earned titles in 2013 and 2014.
Styres laid the groundwork for the Arrows, who have produced some of the top names in the NLL, like Alex “Kedoh” Hill, Brayden Hill, Cody Jamieson, Doug Jamieson, Craig Point, Johnny Powless, Quinn Powless, Austin Staats, Randy Staats, and Sid Smith. Backed by future NLL stars, Six Nations won the Ontario Championship four straight years (2004-07) and captured the 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2017 Minto Cups (Canadian Junior “A” Lacrosse Championship).
With his extensive background in the National Lacrosse League, Styres has been able to bring the same world-class training and management to all of his teams, from his Bantam Provincial A championship club to his U-19 World Junior Lacrosse Championship men’s gold-medal winning box team. Achieving success as the head coach and GM of the U-19
team was extra special because he captured the 2016 world title at the event hosted at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Six Nations.
Having the opportunity to serve as head coach and GM at multiple levels has provided him with some of the most rewarding moments of his career. He also coached future Iroquois stars with Grand River Ironmen Field Lacrosse from 2012-17. The highlight of working with these teams, ages 13-19, was leading them to bronze in 2014, silver in 2015 and gold in 2016 at the prestigious NDP Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions.
He achieved further success as a head coach during two trips to the Native American Indigenous Games (NAIG). As the coach of Team Ontario, the U-16 team won silver in 2014, and the U-19 team captured gold in 2017.
Over the past two decades, Styres’ teams have experienced unprecedented success at every level. With a track record of producing championship players, teams and staffs, he was ideal for the position of general manager for the Iroquois Nationals – from an athletic and a cultural perspective.
“He is the perfect person (for the job),” said Iroquois transition player Jeremy Thompson. “He is a smart guy, obviously, from a business standpoint and what he does on a day-to-day basis. Curt looks at everything from a bird’s-eye view and sees things from different angles. I’m pleased that he was the final choice. What I learned from Curt and have seen with his actions, is that his success rate is pretty high when it comes to the sport of lacrosse and across the board. With Rochester, he has three championships under his belt.”
Thompson also recognized Styres’ investment in his culture. Everyone who knows anything about the Thompson brothers understands their grassroots approach and how they exude traditional values and beliefs. Styres has a similar connection by supporting people like Cayuga sub-chief and faith keeper Leroy “Jock” Hill.
“I just like to acknowledge that,” said Thompson. “Curt has been an important factor and supported my father-in-law, who runs a program for Cayuga language and culture. To us as indigenous people, it is important to revitalize that information and knowledge. It’s important to our livelihood and keeping that fire alive. It’s that fire that burns in our heart and identifies us. What identifies us is our language and culture. A part of that is lacrosse. As a youngster growing up, lacrosse was amongst us and across all of the nations of the Haudenosaunee, the Iroquois Confederacy. Everything is just intertwined. I appreciate that about Curt and, from a grassroots level, what he does to give back to not only the sport but culturally, as well.”
Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team to compete in 2022 World Games after initial exclusion
The Iroquois Nationals, which represent the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in international field lacrosse, will be among eight men’s lacrosse teams competing in the 2022 World Games after they were originally excluded.
“We’re very pleased that we will be competing,” said Leo Nolan, executive director of the organization that oversees the team and its development group.
“Without us, it would have been a very different kind of tournament. “
The 11th edition of the World Games will be held in Birmingham, Ala., in July 2022, and it will be the first time men’s lacrosse will be included in the games.
The Iroquois Nationals team was originally told they were ineligible to compete under International Olympic Committee rules. It is unclear what would have prevented the team from competing under those rules.
The team is made up of athletes from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, which includes the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk), Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora nations.
The Haudenosaunee invented lacrosse. They call it a medicine game as a gift from the Creator, to be played for his enjoyment and for healing.
“We’re the originators of the game,” said Nolan. “The Creator gave us this game and a part of the responsibility is to share the game with others.”
After an international movement of support was sparked for the team, with many other organizations working to try to find a solution, World Lacrosse announced on Monday the Iroquois Nationals are now among the teams invited to compete.

“It’s been a long road for the Iroquois Nationals. We’ve had some hurdles to go over and this most recent one, we’re just glad the right thing is being done,” said David Bray, a member of the team’s board of directors.
“It’s been an inspiration to see the world lacrosse community, the world Indigenous community, all stand behind us to get to this point again. We look forward to continuing our efforts on the field.”

The Iroquois Nationals, Australia, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Japan and the United States are the eight teams competing.
World Lacrosse said the teams were finalized after the International World Games Association confirmed that the Iroquois Nationals were eligible to compete, no objections were received from the Canadian Olympic Committee, Canadian Lacrosse Association, United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee or U.S. Lacrosse, as well as a decision by Ireland Lacrosse to voluntarily withdraw from the tournament.
“This is a very good day, and outcome, for the sport of lacrosse,” said World Lacrosse President Sue Redfern.
“We have arrived at an outcome that will create a true showcase for lacrosse at the World Games 2022 in Birmingham. This was achieved by our organizations coming together, listening carefully and working constructively to reach a shared goal.”
‘It was the right thing to do’
Last week, Ireland Lacrosse voluntarily vacated its men’s senior national team’s position in the World Games 2022 to ensure there would be no barriers to the Iroquois Nationals entry to the tournament. The association said it was “the right thing to do.”
Ireland finished 12th in the 2018 men’s world championship.
“We recognized that there was a problem with us going and with the Iroquois being number three in the world and not being deemed eligible for this event,” said Catherine Conway, communications director for Ireland Lacrosse and assistant coach for the women’s senior national team.
“We felt really strongly that just putting another graphic on social media saying we support the Iroquois was not the appropriate thing to do because talk is cheap. We very much felt that action was necessary.”
Nolan said “it was the right thing to do for lacrosse in general.”
“We are certainly very thankful and have a great amount of respect for Ireland,” he said.

The top eight eligible women’s lacrosse teams invited to the World Games will be based upon final placement in the 2021 World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship, which takes place in Maryland next summer.
The women’s team representing the Haudenosaunee Confederacy will now be eligible for selection.
Iroquois lacrosse team aims to make Olympic competition under its own flag
Iroquois Nationals lacrosse star Randy Staats was angry at first, but he now says an international snub of his team only fuelled his desire to play on the world stage.
Iroquois Nationals lacrosse star Randy Staats was angry at first, but he now says an international snub of his team only fuelled his desire to play on the world stage.
Three years ago, the International Olympic Committee granted World Lacrosse, the international federation, provisional recognition. That’s a step toward inclusion in the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles.
But to make the Olympics, the Iroquois Nationals, strong competitors in other international venues, will have to prove to the International Olympic Committee that they represent a sovereign nation distinct from Canada or the United States.
Lacrosse players from the six First Nations that make up the Haudenosaunee Confederacy compete not for Canada or the U.S. — the settler states where their nations are nested — but for their confederacy.
Men’s lacrosse has recently been added to the World Games, an international competition often considered an audition for sports seeking inclusion in the Olympics.
Even though the Iroquois Nationals finished in third place at the 2018 World Lacrosse Championships, they were not initially included in the top eight teams selected to compete at the 2022 World Games.
“I thought it was a mistake at first,” Staats recalls. “I was frustrated, I was upset. It actually kind of helped me, in a way, personally, because it allowed me to have confidence to voice my opinion.”
It seems Staats, 28, was destined to be a lacrosse player. “I was born with a stick in my cradle,” he says with a laugh.
As a Mohawk growing up in Six Nations of the Grand River in southern Ontario, the game was passed down to him through the generations by his elders.
Staats’ father, uncles and grandfather all played. “[It] just goes to show, in our culture, what it means. You enter this earth with a wooden stick and when you leave this earth you have a wooden stick in your casket.”
A tweet from Staats about the World Games sparked attention, leading to an outcry, says teammate Brendan Bomberry, also a Mohawk from Six Nations.
“We really saw the power of social media and the power of our voices that, if we speak up, we can make a difference and that was really awesome to see.”
The resulting uproar and the voluntary withdrawal by Ireland Lacrosse’s Senior National Team from the international competition caused World Lacrosse and the International World Games Association to reverse their decision and include the Iroquois Nationals in the coming 2022 World Games.
It was a recognition of the central place the Iroquois team holds in the lacrosse sphere.
The Irish lacrosse association saw that it was important for the Iroquois team to be there as the originators of the game and they stepped back, says Leo Nolan, executive director of the Iroquois Nationals. “It was a magnanimous gesture on their part to do that.”
The Haudenosaunee Confederacy views lacrosse as a gift from the Creator.
“We have a modern version now, but the medicine game was originally given to us by the Creator to help us heal spiritually, physically, mentally,” says Nolan, a Mohawk who grew up on the Onondaga Nation.
“It’s an integral part of our culture, of our lifestyle, of our way of dealing with adverse things that happen sometimes in our lives, so it’s a good way of helping us deal with everyday life struggles and stresses. The game, of course, has changed dramatically from those times, but we continue to hold that very close to us.”
While the Haudenosaunee are considered the originators and stewards of the game, many First Nations played a version of lacrosse.
Many cite the early ball games known as baggataway and tewaarathon as forerunners of the modern version. In those times, hundreds of Indigenous players might compete on a field stretching kilometres, with games lasting days.
The ball was originally made of wood and later deerskin filled with fur. Deer sinew was used for stick netting.
The name “crosse” or “la crosse” was coined by French Jesuit missionary Jean de Brébeuf in 1637 based on his observations of a game.
In the 1860s, standardized lacrosse rules were developed by Montreal dentist William George Beers, an avid promoter of the game who also exchanged the traditional deerskin ball for a hard rubber one.
In 1867, the National Lacrosse Association was formed and Beers later published a guide and rulebook titled “Lacrosse: The National Game of Canada.” Among the rules: “No Indian must play in a match for a white club, unless previously agreed upon.”
The National Lacrosse Association became an amateur organization in 1880, with Indigenous players barred from championship competition.
Don Morrow, a professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Western University who studies the history of sport in Canada, has written that implicit in this practice was the assumption that Indians had an unfair advantage because of their skill and, very likely, “the perception of them as racially inferior.”
“Thus, the group that was leaned on when (the modern game) was in its infancy, was summarily dismissed — except for exhibition matches and the showcase tours — once the institution of lacrosse was able to stand by itself.”
As a result, Indigenous teams played one another but were not allowed to compete for a Canadian title, says historian Allan Downey, author of “The Creator’s Game” and a professor in the history department and Indigenous studies program at McMaster University in Hamilton.
“It had the effect of limiting, if not almost eliminating, the right of the Haudenosaunee to represent themselves as a sovereign nation, as a team in, not only Canadian championship classifications, but also in international competitions.”
Downey sees the developments as an appropriation of the Indigenous game to shape a distinctly Canadian identity.
Two teams — the Mohawk Indians and the Winnipeg Shamrocks — competed for Canada at the 1904 Summer Olympic Games in St. Louis, with Winnipeg winning the gold medal. Lacrosse was also featured at the 1908 Games, but it was relegated to demonstration status at a handful of future Olympics.
The birth of the Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team, initially as a one-time venture in the 1980s, marked a path toward change. The team strived to become part of the International Lacrosse Federation, a forerunner of the World Lacrosse Championship.
The federation didn’t know the team or the confederacy’s history, Downey says. “So the question becomes immediately: what do you mean you’re a sovereign nation? How can you prove that you’re a sovereign nation?”
For the Iroquois Nationals, the path back to the Olympics involves being competitive enough to qualify, forming a national Olympic committee and applying for recognition by the International Olympic Committee.
The IOC is built upon the recognition of nation-states, and Indigenous sovereignty challenges the autonomy of those states, Downey says. The Iroquois Nationals will have to convince the IOC that they represent a sovereign nation that can compete on that basis, he said.
“So, there needs to be a reworking of the political process for their recognition and I’m hopeful that that will take place but it’s not going to be without a long difficult struggle.”
The only other option would be to compete under the IOC flag, rather than the Haudenosaunee flag, which defeats the purpose, Downey says.
The decision on the Iroquois’ National Olympic Committee application for the 2028 Games is scheduled to be made in 2024.
“We basically have to sell the IOC on our international experience, our international standing, our sovereignty, and the good things that’ll happen if we’re there playing lacrosse, the game we originated,” Nolan said.
The team is “very optimistic” about the prospect, he added.
“We think it’d be a great gesture, a great symbolic step for Indigenous communities — not just us, not just American and Alaska natives, or First Nations folks — but for Indigenous communities around the world.”

Iroquois Nationals, World Series of Youth Lacrosse Issue Statements Addressing Incident
Editor’s Note: This story was updated July 14, at 8:00 p.m. to include the World Series of Youth Lacrosse’s statement.
The Iroquois Nationals issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon saying that “until the situation is properly addressed publicly, we will not be looking to enter INDT teams into the WSYL moving forward.”
The statement did not explicitly describe the incident it was addressing, but wrote “It is far too common that incidents regarding the generalization of our people occur, with unwelcome and inappropriate comments directed towards our players and staff.”
While parties involved have provided varying accounts of the incident that occurred, the issue stems from a conflict between parents at a banquet during the World Series of Youth Lacrosse, held from July 1-3 at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md.
The most widely distributed accounts spread via social media, including posts like this one:
On Wednesday night, the World Series of Youth Lacrosse issued a statement via social media:
A Long Island Express representative declined to comment.
The Iroquois Nationals statement included both that the organization had conducted a careful and detailed review, and that “In this instance, what is unacceptable is the unwillingness of an organization to follow and enforce its own code of conduct.”
Though the Nationals’ statement references the use of the color orange during the World Series’ televised games on July 4 as an appreciated acknowledgement of the recent tragic residential school revelations, this incident again brings attention to the gap between the respect for the Creator’s Game that so many players acknowledge and the instances of discrimination that Native players are subject to.
In 2019, a Philadelphia Wings PA announcer was fired after making a comment about cutting Lyla Thompson’s braid when he was a visiting player with the Georgia Swarm. Former Hobart attackman and Canisius assistant coach Frank Brown interacted with the tweet, indicating he’d experienced acts of racial intolerance while playing.
The Iroquois Nationals team denied a spot to play in The World Games – Q30 Television
The World Games is an event held every four years following the Olympics, that allows many sports that do not get to compete in the Olympics to compete on an international stage. The next World Games will be in Birmingham, Alabama in 2022. The International World Games Association (IWGA) announced the 16 teams, 8 men’s and 8 women’s, that will be competing for the sport of lacrosse. The Iroquois Nationals team, which has been competing since the 1990’s was not one of the teams listed.
Not receiving an invitation after years of competing was not taken lightly, due to what lacrosse means to Native American’s.
Great connecting with you @BainbridgeSport

The Iroquois were the first to play lacrosse, as they believe it was a gift from the Creator. The game of lacrosse, called the Creator’s game or the Medicine Game, originated with the Iroquois, and was then taught to the world.
The Iroquois National Team released an official statement on twitter saying “With the next World Games taking place on land where our ancestors once walked and played, it is more important than ever to honor and celebrate the roots of lacrosse.”

U.S. Lacrosse, the United State’s National governing body of lacrosse, released a statement where they pledged their full support to The Iroquois National team and the Haudenosaunee people.
Lyle Thompson of the Onondaga Nation shared his frustrations on Twitter “So this is the same old story, different time in history.”
So this is the same old story, different time in history.
As native people we’ll continue to run this ever lasting track of hurdles.
it’s timeless and exhausting but must continue to fight.

Peter Milliman Named Head Coach of Iroquois Nationals Men’s Sixes Team
Peter Milliman, the current head men’s lacrosse coach at Johns Hopkins University, will serve as the head coach of the Iroquois Nationals Men’s Sixes Team at the World Games 2022 it was announced today by Leo Nolan, executive director of Iroquois program. The World Games will take place in Birmingham, Alabama from July 7-17, 2022, and will include both men’s and women’s Sixes competitions.
World Lacrosse Sixes is an outdoor adaptation of traditional field and box lacrosse and features teams with 12 players competing on a field that is 70 meters long by 36 meters wide. The game is played with five field players plus one goalie for each team; the games are 32 minutes long (four eight-minute quarters) and feature a 30-second shot clock. Draws occur only at the start of each quarter with goalies initiating play after goals are scored.
“Peter’s passion for the game, his innovative offense and team-building skills, along with a stated desire to learn from our player’s creative style of play made him stand out among other applicants,” said Rex Lyons, board member and head of the search committee.
Milliman recently completed his first season as the head coach at Johns Hopkins and guided the Blue Jays to the Big Ten championship game. Prior to arriving at Homewood, he had served for three seasons as the head coach at Cornell and led the Big Red to the 2018 NCAA quarterfinals and a three-year record of 28-10. He served as the head coach at Pfeiffer and as an assistant at both Princeton and Cornell before being named the head coach at Cornell.
“I am excited for and humbled by the opportunity to serve as the head coach of the Iroquois Nationals,” Milliman stated. “I look forward to working with some of the most uniquely talented and skilled players in the world at one of the premier international events in our sport.”
This will not be Milliman’s first time coaching at the international level. He served as the head coach of Team Russia at the 2014 FIL World Championship and was an assistant coach with Team USA at the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship, where he helped lead the Americans to a third-place finish.
The Iroquois Nationals, Ireland Lacrosse, and Diplomacy in Sports – The Scarlet
The Iroquois Nationals are the third-best lacrosse team in the world. They have won a silver medal in every indoor World Games since 2003. You would not expect them to be barred from participating in the International World Games. However, this year they were almost barred from the indoor World Games. After coming in third place internationally in lacrosse, the Nationals were denied eligibility into the 2022 World Games in Alabama, on account of their nationhood status.
This is not the first time the Iroquois Nationals have faced hardships before they step onto the field. The Iriquois have had troubles since their first National Competitions in 1990. The Nationals represent the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, which is composed of six federally-recognized members: the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora nations. They have been on an upward climb to reach international status and acknowledgment. Despite the Iroquois being a recognized team by the Federation of International Lacrosse for over 30 years, they have been denied entry into countries because of heightened security, which discredits the Haudenosaunee Nation passport as a legal document despite having been recognized since 1923.
The Nationals’ director Leo Nolan stated in a CBC interview that “It could be a lack of appreciation, understanding and just basic knowledge about who we are as a nation-state…it is a question of (our) sovereignty.” To clarify, the Haudenosaunee Nation has been recognized in three treaties with the United States, and has since negotiated deals with the Netherlands, England, and France. However, this did not prevent the International World Games Association from declaring that the Iroquois Nationals were ineligible from competing in the 2022 World Games on two accounts. Firstly, that the team did not represent a sovereign nation, and secondly that they do not have an Olympic Committee. This declaration did not go undisputed for long. Soon after the announcement, social media blew up with calls for the inclusion of the Iroquois Nationals in the championship tournament. A petition for their inclusion received over 50,000 signatures as of September 21, 2020. Many noticed misunderstandings regarding the Haudenosaunee history and status. One of the cruelest ironies? Lacrosse originated from Native Americans, who may have created it as early as the 12th century. So the Iroquois Nationals represent more than a lacrosse team – they are carrying a cultural legacy to the international stage. As World Lacrosse teams fight to get their sport back into the Olympics, many believe that the Iroquois Nationals have a rightful place to compete amongst the eight qualifying nations; not only because they proved themselves capable of qualifying, but also because of the cultural significance of lacrosse going international to these Native American communities.
The Irish lacrosse team clearly understood this logic. The Irish team placed 12th in the qualifiers and were allowed to compete in the World Games; players quickly noticed a glaring discrepancy. This led to a surprising announcement earlier this month. Irish officials revealed their withdrawal from the eight-nation competition, clearing a spot for the Iroquois Nationals. In a statement given over Twitter on September 2, Chief Executive Officer of Ireland Lacrosse Michael Kennedy stated, “as much as our players would have been honored to compete, we know the right thing is for the Iroquois Nationals to represent our sport on the international stage. ”
This collaboration signifies a collective force in lacrosse – that their collective power was stronger than a single team’s power. The Irish and Iroquois have forged a friendship The Nationals responded with a statement stating, “your actions have spoken louder than words showing everyone the true power of sport, and the spirit of lacrosse.” Shortly afterward, the Iroquois Nationals officially accepted their slot in the World Games. The International World Games Association has reversed course on its standards for eligibility after the social media outrage about the Haudenosaunee Nation. On August 14th, the organization announced that it would welcome teams from the Haudenosaunee Nation, as long as they qualify and are eligible. This is a significant shift from their original perspective. Paired with the Irish and Iroquios’ newfound companionship, these announcements gave the Iroquois Nationals a renewed chance to win the World Games.
The sacrifice of Ireland Lacrosse to ensure that the Iroquois Nationals had their rightful place in the games, signifies the spirit of sportsmanship and their newfound friendship. The World Games will take place from July 7, 2022, to July 17, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama.
90,000 Iroquois Marek Gamshik – a haircut for good luck. He cheated on him 1 time
There is nothing more constant at the European Championships than the failures of the Russian national team and the hairstyle of Marek Gamshik. The captain of the Slovak national team has not changed his image for more than 10 years – occasionally only the length and density of the mohawk changes. It seems as if he has been on Marek’s head all his life, but it is not.
In 2009, Gamshik was far from the idea of growing tall hair. He either cut his hair baldly, then ran disheveled.“I have always liked the high forelock. This hairstyle is easy to keep in order – just a little gel is needed, ”Marek said in his book“ Marekiaro ”.

The idea to make a mohawk came up to the player spontaneously, and it is not associated with heavy music and punk rock culture. This image of Gamshik was pushed by his Neapolitan barber Reno.He proposed to make the hairstyle more expressive and even more memorable: to sharpen the forelock and shave off the hair on the sides – this is how a tall mohawk turned out. “He immediately started bringing me luck,” Gamshik said.
“I have a special relationship with hair. When I was young in Slovakia, I always cut my hair short. My mother said that I have naughty hair, and when it grows back, I look like a savage. I was a modest guy, and also very obedient – I always did what my parents said. But somehow I looked in the mirror and realized that I didn’t like a banal haircut at all.I decided to let my hair go a little and looked like a disheveled animal.
Started following the hairdo when it was time to go out with the girls. After arriving in Italy, he was even blond. Then a forelock with gel appeared – thanks to my fiancee Martina, ”says Marek.

Over the years, the Mohawk and Hamšík became one, and yet one day they parted. In the 2011/12 season, Napoli won the Italian Cup, and Gamshik, as he promised his partners in case of victory, completely shaved off the hair on his head.Esequiel Lavessi, known for his performances for Napoli, PSG and the Argentine national team, helped him in this.
Over the years, Gamshik’s mohawk is getting shorter and shorter, and he came to Euro 2020 with a hairstyle half the size of what he had in the era of his performances for Napoli. But it still brings him good luck: in the first round of the group stage, the captain made an assist for one of two goals against the Poles, which can greatly help the team to reach the playoffs.

Macho from Macerata. Branded Mohawk and 5 more facts about Ivan Zaitsev
Today in the Kazan Volleyball Center the Wolf will catch the Hare … with a block. The captain of Zenit-Kazan Alexander Volkov will try to neutralize the star captain of the Italian “Macerata” Ivan Zaitsev. The winner of the match will advance to the Champions League playoffs from first place in the group. Spectators are in for a bright spectacle, because not only contenders for victory in the tournament will converge on the site, but also a whole galaxy of great players, including an Italian of Russian origin.
1. SON OF FAMOUS PARENTS
On October 19, Ivan’s father, Vyacheslav Zaitsev was admitted to the Volleyball Hall of Fame, which is located in the homeland of the game, in the American town of Holyoke (Massachusetts). He is rightfully considered one of the best binders of the twentieth century. At the age of 17, Zaitsev made his debut in the Leningrad Avtomobilist, and at the age of 19 he already won the European Championship as part of the USSR national team. Pupil and favorite Vyacheslav Platonov for many years became an indispensable player of the national team, becoming an Olympic champion, two-time world champion and seven-time (record) European champion! Having played for Avtomobilist for more than fifteen years, Zaitsev went abroad, where he performed in Italy and Switzerland. He played his last game as a player at the age of 40 for Lugano and began his coaching career there. In 2006, in Kazan, the specialist led the Russian youth team to victory at the European Championship, for many years he was a member of the coaching staff of Belogorye, and now he works with the Voronezh Kristall. At the end of last season, this team advanced to the “A” league of the Russian championship.
At the genetic level, Ivan Zaitsev probably had a predisposition to swimming, because his mother achieved noticeable success in this sport Irina Pozdnyakova . In 1966, at the age of 13, she set a world record in the 200 m breaststroke, and a month later she won a silver medal at the European Championships. So Ivan’s talent is in his blood.
Quote: “I am very happy for my father. It’s nice that his game and his victories are remembered. In those early years, there was a different volleyball, and my father was one of the best in this other volleyball. Of course, I’m proud of him. I hope that he too will have many reasons to rejoice at my achievements. ”
2. IVAN CHOSE ITALY
Ivan Zaitsev was born in the Italian city of Spoleto, where his father began his foreign career. In 1993, the family returned to their homeland for a short time, but not in full force.Ivan’s older sister, Anna, back in 1993 at the age of 18, married an Italian and took the citizenship of this country. Young Vanya went to school in St. Petersburg and learned the basics of volleyball there, but then the Zaitsev family again went to the Apennine Peninsula, which eventually became his family. When it came time to choose a country to compete for, Ivan had no big doubts. In general, Italians do not hesitate to take naturalized players to the national team. Recently the Italian national team played Mikhail Lasko (Pole, son of the 1976 Olympic champion Lech Lasko ), natives of Bulgaria Hristo Zlatanov and Vencheslav Simeonov , now Czech Jiri Kovarzh 9022 Dragan Travica and Pole Michal Baranovich .Now Zaitsev often torments Russian clubs and the national team .
Quote: “When I started joining the first team of Perugia, my father had a conversation about who to play for. But to get into the Russian national team, you have to play in Russia, be in full view of the head coach. I went to school and could not leave it. Besides, I have not seen much interest in myself in Russia. ”
3. UNIVERSAL PLAYER
Of course, according to his father’s will, Ivan began his career as a binder. In this role, he first got into the youth team of Italy. In Perugia, and then in Roma, Zaitsev received very little game practice and could not move such a lump as Paolo Tofoli . The European, world champion and three-time Olympic medalist was not even going to give way to the young setter. In the 2007/08 season, Zaitsev also suffered in “Latina”, and then made a decision that made him one of the brightest players in modern volleyball – Zaitsev decided to return to Rome, but already retrained as a striker. With each season in the team, Ivan added and in 2011 went with the Italian national team to the European Championship. Since then, his positions in the national team have been unshakable, but they change periodically. At the “bronze” for the Italians Olympics , Mauro Berutto used Zaitsev as an outplayer, and in the World League 2013 and at the last Euro he was already diagonal. Zaitsev’s universalism is an opportunity for a coach to surprise opponents.
Quote: “When moving to Roma, I decided to change my role.At first, my father grumbled strongly – he, of course, wanted to see me as a binder, but then he got used to it. In addition, I saw what I was doing: the results went, I got into the national team. I was a setter, an outplayer, a diagonal player, and I played a central striker several times in training. It remains to try yourself as a libero – and there will be a complete set! ”
4. WIFE – PHOTO MODEL
On May 18 of this year, Ivan Zaitsev got married. Thousands of his fans around the world were crying. An Italian woman with Irish roots became the chosen one of the volleyball player. Ashling Sirocchi .They met four years ago on the beach. Then Ivan also tried himself in beach volleyball. Their love song was the romantic composition Through Her Eyes by Dream Theater, and the city of their love was Rome. Their wedding took place in the eternal city.
Quote: “I was born in Italy, lived there all my life. My girlfriend is Italian. And so am I, although my character and temperament are Russian. I sincerely sing the Italian anthem, but do not forget about my roots. My wife and I speak Italian, with her mother – English.I communicate with my parents in Russian, and with my sister Anya – when in Russian, when in Italian. ”
5. “MY LIFE, MY RULES”
Zaitsev is one of the most extravagant and recognizable volleyball players of our time. If his father had a luxurious mustache, then Ivan stands out on the site not only for his bright game, but also for his signature mohawk. At one time, Ivan had another red beard , but he decided to give it up. And even earlier, he had a regular hairstyle a la hedgehog .
Zaitsev also has a tattoo on his chest with a picture of a bird and the phrase my life my rules.
Quote: “How much time do I spend on my hair? Just two minutes before a workout or game to get your hair up and that’s it. If this is not done, then they get into my eyes. ”
6. JUST KING
When the first successes appeared and the striker Zaitsev began to crush one opponent after another, he received the nickname Tsar from the Italian fans and journalists. When “Macerata” and “Zenit-Kazan” played in Italy, the host in the arena said: “Tsar Ivan is serving.”And this is a great honor for the player. For seven years (2000 – 2007) another Ivan, Milkovich, reigned supreme in Macerata. For his leadership and striking qualities in the world of volleyball, the Olympic champion from Serbia is known as Ivan the Terrible. Perhaps in the future, such a prefix will appear in the nickname Zaitsev, but for now he is the youngest captain in the history of “Macerata”.
Quote: “Father calls to play in Russia. And I myself understand that the Russian Super League today is the strongest club tournament in the world. But in Italy I feel comfortable. ” Read also: Ivan Zaitsev: “Psychologically, it will be easy to play with Zenit-Kazan”

In Turkey, there was a real tragedy on the basis of football.A 13-year-old boy committed suicide because his father did not allow him to get a haircut following the example of Milan midfielder Umit Dawal.
As you know, it was this footballer who scored the only goal in the 1/8 finals of the World Cup against the Japanese on Tuesday. Naturally, he instantly became a national hero and an idol of youth. Young Zafer really wanted to become at least something like his idol, and he made himself exactly the same mohawk as Umit’s.
Everything would be fine, but his father did not like the boy’s new hairstyle. He made his son go to a hairdresser the very next day and have his hair cut. The trembling heart of a 13-year-old fan could not stand such a mockery. He tied a belt to the window of his house and hanged himself. The tragedy took place in the city of Gemlik in the northwestern province of Bursa.
How Europeans conquered North America with the help of “peace” treaties – RT in Russian
On June 23, 1683, a treaty of friendship between white settlers and Indians was signed on the territory of the modern United States. The founder of the Pennsylvania colony, British William Penn, until the last days of his life, fulfilled the terms of the agreement, without infringing on the rights of the indigenous people of North America. However, this attitude towards the natives was an exception to the rule. European colonialists, seeking to occupy the best territories of the New World, pushed the Indians back to the West. All means were used – from bribery, political intrigue and fictitious “peace” agreements to mass murders.
When white settlers were just beginning to colonize the Atlantic coast of North America, they almost immediately “got acquainted” with several large groups of Indian peoples: Algonquins, southern Iroquois and Eastern Muscogs. In these tribes, power was vested in the elders, who appointed leaders as soon as a military threat arose. The most powerful force in the region was the Iroquois League, which, according to scientists, created a pre-state formation. Nevertheless, at first, the unusual appearance and technical achievements of white foreigners confused the Indians, but very soon they became convinced that they were dealing with ordinary people.
The period from the beginning of the XVII to the beginning of the XVIII century, scientists call “the first wave of Indian wars.”The Indians at this time had a serious numerical superiority, and they had a chance to prevail over the first invaders. Therefore, the colonialists had to use not only weapons. Alcohol, European diseases, the setting off of various tribes among themselves and the “peace” treaties worked no less efficiently.
William Penn and the Three Runners
The Puritans and representatives of some other religious movements who participated in the colonization of North America often called the Indians “children of the devil”, without hiding their antipathy towards them. However, the Native Americans paid them with the same coin. Therefore, most of the British colonies on the Atlantic coast in the 17th century were in a state of almost constant war with local Indians. In the 1620s and 1630s, peoples such as the Pimas, Pequots and Pequos were completely destroyed.

The Wampanoag leader Metakom, also known as King Philip, launched a successful war against the whites. He managed to develop his own metallurgical production and conclude an alliance with local leaders, after which he began a brutal war, besieging 60 and destroying 12 colonial settlements. In these battles, one in five white men died. However, Metakom himself was killed in an accidental skirmish, and most of his people were destroyed.
“The scattered Indians were assimilated and fell into debt dependence on their neighbors, unable to cultivate the land or obtain food for themselves in any other way, after which they themselves turned to the council of colonies with a request to buy part of the land in order to pay off debts. But very often the “guardians” appointed by the authorities deceived them with impunity when making transactions, “historian and writer Alexei Stepkin told RT in an interview.
However, there were exceptions among the white settlers. For example, William Penn, a prominent British public figure and Quaker, founder of the Pennsylvania colony. Taking advantage of the fact that the crown owed his father a large sum of money, Penn asked to repay the debt with American lands. Unlike many of his compatriots, the influential Quaker decided to negotiate with the Indians for a peaceful distribution of land.
In 1682, he made the first deal with the Lenape Indians (or Delaware – this is the name that Fenimore Cooper used in his novels). And on June 23, 1683, William Penn signed a comprehensive friendship treaty with the Lenape. At the same time, he fulfilled all obligations undertaken before the Indians, using only the lands purchased from them, paying bills and allowing them to enter the “white” territory.

Great closure: why vandals desecrate monuments to Christopher Columbus in the USA
On October 12, 1492, the Italian Christopher Columbus discovered a new part of the world – America. The name of the great navigator is practically known …
In 1718, Penn died and the land was inherited by his children. Those humanistic views of their father did not share. In 1736, they presented the Lenape with a “treaty” allegedly concluded 50 years earlier by Penn, according to which the White retreated lands for a day and a half west of the Pennsylvania border. According to historians, this document was fake, but the Indian leaders were still persuaded to admit it.
The Indians, based on their own ideas, calculated that we are talking about a distance of 60 km. However, Penn’s heirs, measuring out the ground, launched the three best runners in the colony along a pre-cleared road. As a result, the border of their lands has moved by about 113 km.The Indians complained about the fraud to the English king, and in the 19th century they filed a lawsuit in an American court, but this did not help them.
In the 17th-19th centuries, the Lenape were partially destroyed, the rest were forcibly resettled to the West.
Force of the contract
“The Indians either sold the land themselves, or it was taken from them by force, or they died out. The land was heavily undervalued in transactions. In theory, the Indians themselves could let farmers into their land and take rent from them. But in practice this was impossible, since the attitude of whites towards the Indians was extremely negative and they almost always lost any legal disputes to the Europeans, “Stepkin noted in an interview with RT.
In the 18th century, European colonialists from France, Great Britain and the United States actively used the Indians in their wars. After the emergence and final formation of the United States of America, the onslaught of the whites against the West became even more decisive. In the 1790s, a series of regulations were adopted to transfer the function of concluding treaties with Indians exclusively to the central authorities in Washington.
In 1823, the US Supreme Court officially approved the de facto “doctrine of discovery”, according to which all Indian lands were declared not owned by anyone, and those colonialists who occupied this or that territory were the first to become their owners. And in 1830, a law was passed on the resettlement of the Indians. According to him, not only wild, but also the so-called civilized Indian peoples, who had previously been guaranteed immunity, were subject to expulsion to the arid lands west of the Mississippi.Since 1831, the American army has driven the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscoge and Seminole Indians westward. Thousands died on the way, never reaching their new “homeland”.
In the second half of the 19th century, when the more fertile areas had already been captured, the Americans began to withdraw the last “ownerless” land – the Great Plains in the center and mountainous areas in the south and west of the continent.

Combination of military force with pseudo-diplomatic negotiations has again begun. The Lakota, Apache and Comanche Indians offered desperate resistance to the invaders, but the predominance of whites was already too great.
Those who refused to obey were ruthlessly exterminated by the American authorities and colonists. The army and detachments of volunteers slaughtered entire settlements, killing women, old people and children. Whites actively practiced scalping, made souvenirs for themselves from the parts of the bodies of killed Indian girls.Carrying out a formal order, the military easily shot from cannons and rifles the villages of peaceful Indians who received security guarantees from Washington.
By 1890 the Indian Wars were over. The resistance of the legitimate owners of American soil was suppressed. If back in 1800 they made up about 15% of the population of the territory that later became part of the United States, then in 1900 no more than 0.5% of the total number of people living there remained on these lands.
From 1776 to 1900, about 600 million hectares of land were taken from the Indians in the United States, which is about 25 times the area of Great Britain, from where the colonialists came to the New World. This takeover was formally legalized through many treaties. From 1777 to 1868, 368 such documents were signed.
Secrets of American Diplomacy
“You need to understand that, for example, the inhabitants of the Great Plains at the beginning of the 19th century were still practically in the Stone Age. They did not know metals, they did not see the wheels. And when they were offered to sign some kind of agreement, they simply did not understand what they wanted from them, since they had a completely different idea of property. They did not think that someone could own land, “Indianist Andrei Golenkov said in an interview with RT.
According to him, each conclusion of the contract was accompanied by the presentation of gifts. Indian chiefs and elders came, received something useful from the whites and put a cross on the paper, not understanding what they were talking about.
“Everything was happening very quickly. The Prairie Indians, finding themselves on the reservation, did not always have time to understand what had happened. As for the more highly developed peoples of the East, intrigues and bribery were used here, ”the expert noted.
According to Valery Korovin, director of the international non-profit foundation Center for Geopolitical Expertise, the white colonialists initially looked at the practice of concluding agreements with a fair amount of cynicism.
“If the Indians began to simply take land from the Indians, they resisted. The invaders, of course, did not like this. In an effort to avoid war, the colonialists imitated attempts to negotiate. However, those who signed these agreements on behalf of the British and US authorities, initially did not even intend to implement them.As soon as the situation allowed, the whites switched to forceful methods of seizing land, ”Korovin emphasized.

Andrei Golenkov noted that in the 19th century, contractual relations with the Indians were used in American society and for domestic political purposes.
“Politics was nevertheless made in the east, and there already appeared all kinds of human rights movements, which included ladies from influential families. And they were irritated by rumors about the total destruction of the Indians. They began to complain about the brutality of the soldiers to their husbands and fathers, and they, in turn, could influence the military. The agreements created the appearance of legitimacy, ”said Golenkov.
However, according to the expert, when discussing the text of agreements with the Indians, American officials and the military did not particularly risk anything.
“I had to read the texts of these agreements in the original. So, they are written so intricately, with such turns that it was not easy for me, a person of the 21st century with a higher education, to figure out what it was about. And what could the illiterate Indian leaders understand? ” – asks Golenkov.
Experts note that the attitude of the Western powers towards representatives of other civilizations has practically not changed over time, which is clearly demonstrated by the modern foreign policy of the same USA.
