Simmons University was founded in 1899 in honor of John Simmons, a wealthy Boston clothing manufacturer. Simmons founded the college based on the belief that women should live independently, offering a liberal arts education for undergraduate students to integrate into their chosen profession. Simmons is a member of the Fenway Colleges consortium, which also includes Emmanuel College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
The undergraduate program is female-only and had only about 1,800 students in the 2012-2013 academic year. The graduate schools (library and computer science, social work, health sciences, business administration and arts and sciences, communications management, gender and cultural studies, public policy and humanities) have about 3,000 students.
