Step 4: Establish College Placement

There are two basic ways to complete Math and English placement requirements. You can complete Option A: upload documents for previous test scores or unofficial transcripts, or you can complete Option B: complete a self-guided placement process for a current assessment of your skills. Choose one option.

To get started, please complete the Placement Plan Form. After completing this form, return to this page to complete Option A or Option B.

Option A

• Upload your documents into the Placement Plan form linked above for previous tests scores (Accuplacer, Smarter Balance, ACT or SAT), unofficial high school or college transcripts, GED certificate in preparation for your mandatory advising appointment. Accuplacer, Smarter Balance, unofficial high school transcripts, and GED certificates are valid within the last 2 years only.

Option B

Depending upon your academic background, you may need to complete a self-guided placement process for Math and/or English for a current assessment of your skills. Note: Each of these resources is designed to assess current skills and will include opportunities to review and refresh your skills.

Once you complete these processes, your results will be forwarded to you and your career advisor who will assist in placing you at the correct level in your required general education courses to receive your degree or credential.

Bates College, located in Lewiston, Maine is one of three prestigious New England liberal arts schools in the state. A private, four-year school, Bates was founded in 1855 by Maine abolitionists and is one of the oldest co-educational institutions in the U. S. Lewiston started as a mill town and grew into a textile and manufacturing center. Currently, it is home to a regional distribution center for Walmart (the area’s largest employer). The early 2000s saw a significant influx of Somali Bantus and, after an adjustment period, these immigrants are credited with revitalizing the local economy (on a small scale business model). Student Life

The 1,800 students at Bates (called ‘Batesies’) enjoy a quiet atmosphere in the cool New England climate. Bates fields 31 NCAA varsity teams, most of which compete in Division III. The college boasts two woodland and wetland preserves supporting academic and extracurricular activities (the 600 acre Bates Morse Mountain Conservation Area and an 80-acre Coastal Center at Shortridge). Students are familiar with the core values of the school: welcoming men and women from diverse racial, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds; the ideals of academic rigor, intellectual curiosity, egalitarianism, social justice and freedom, and inclusive social character and progressive tradition (noted as being one of the first U. S. institutions of higher learning to admit women and people of color). History of Bates College

Bates College was founded in 1855 by people who strongly believed in freedom, civil rights, and the importance of higher education for all who could benefit from it. Bates was the first college in New England to educate students regardless of race, religion, national origin, or gender. In the mid-19th century, Oren B. Cheney, a Dartmouth graduate and minister, conceived the idea of ​​establishing a Maine State Seminary in Lewiston. Bates College graduates earn a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. Jazz Goes to College is a 1954 album documenting the North American tour of Dave Brubeck’s college quartet.It was Dave Brubeck’s first album for Columbia Records. Background
