The Birth and Evolution of the NBA All-Star Game
The NBA All-Star Game has been a cornerstone of professional basketball since its inception in 1951. This annual showcase of the league’s top talent has grown from a simple exhibition match to a weekend-long spectacle that captures the attention of fans worldwide. Over the years, the game has evolved in format, scoring, and significance, reflecting the changing landscape of the NBA itself.
In its early years, the All-Star Game was a straightforward contest between the best players from the Eastern and Western Conferences. As the league expanded and the level of talent increased, the game began to take on new dimensions. The introduction of fan voting in 1975 allowed supporters to have a say in which players would represent their conferences, adding a new layer of engagement to the event.
Notable Changes in All-Star Game Format
- 1951: First NBA All-Star Game held in Boston
- 1975: Fan voting introduced for starting lineups
- 2018: Team captain format replaces East vs. West
- 2020: Elam Ending introduced to determine the winner
The most recent significant change came in 2018 when the NBA moved away from the traditional East vs. West format. Instead, two team captains now draft their teams from a pool of All-Stars, regardless of conference affiliation. This change has injected new excitement into the game, creating unique player combinations that fans might not otherwise see.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver defends All-Star Game, responds to LeBron criticism
SportsPulse: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the media on the eve of the All-Star Game and explained that economic interests were a factor when deciding whether or not to press forward.
SportsPulse, USA TODAY
After initially scrapping the event during a shortened season and facing criticism at reversing course, the 70th NBA All-Star Game goes on Sunday from Atlanta.
Like the season schedule in general, All-Star weekend was severely impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, All-Star weekend isn’t even an entire weekend. The festivities have been truncated — there was no Rising Stars game — and squeezed into a single day. The skills competition and 3-point shootout will take place Sunday before the game, with the dunk contest at halftime.
The All-Star Game is usually one of the marquee events on the NBA calendar, but it will be far more subdued this year with strict health and safety protocols in place (although some folks in Atlanta aren’t exactly cooperating).
Even so, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver defended the league’s decision to stage the game and downplayed any safety concerns. He also touted the NBA’s pledge to donate nearly $3 million from the events to groups supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Will things go off smoothly? We can only cross our fingers and wait for tip-off to find out. In the meantime, here’s everything to know for Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game:
How to watch
Coverage on TNT begins at 5 p.m. ET with the NBA Tip-Off Show, followed by the skills challenge and 3-point shootout at 6:30 p.m. ET. The All-Star Game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET, with the slam dunk contest at halftime.
Who are the starters?
Starting for Team LeBron will be LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic. The starters for Team Durant are Kawhi Leonard, Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, Kyrie Irving and Bradley Beal.
Who are the reserves?
The reserves for Team LeBron are: Damian Lillard, Ben Simmons, Chris Paul, Jaylen Brown, Paul George, Domantas Sabonis and Rudy Gobert.
Coming off the bench for Team Durant are: James Harden, Zion Williamson, Julius Randle, Zach LaVine, Nikola Vucevic, Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley.
How will the winner be decided?
For the second year in a row, the All-Star Game will use an untimed fourth quarter and a target score to decide the winner. The target score will be determined by taking the leading team’s total score through three quarters and adding 24 (to represent the late Kobe Bryant’s jersey number). The first team to reach the target score wins.
Who is participating in the skills challenge?
Phoenix’s Chris Paul, Dallas’ Luka Doncic, New York’s Julius Randle, Portland’s Robert Covington, Indiana’s Domantas Sabonis and Orlando’s Nikola Vucevic.
Who is participating in the 3-point shootout?
Golden State’s Steph Curry, Boston’s Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, Chicago’s Zach LaVine and Utah’s Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley.
Who is participating in the dunk contest?
Portland’s Anfernee Simons, Indiana’s Cassius Stanley and New York’s Obi Toppin.

On the Road Again at All-Star Weekend
“We all know why we’re playing it,” Leonard said then. “There’s money on the line.”
I, too, thought the risks taken to preserve Turner’s projected windfall of up to $30 million, on top of the untold millions that the N.B.A. and its players avoided losing through an outright cancellation, were ill-advised. Yet I must concede, with hindsight, that it’s a stretch to parrot the line that routinely dismisses the All-Star Game as “just” an exhibition. TNT treats it as the jewel of its annual N.B.A. coverage, bigger than any single playoff game on its air, while Silver said the league was expecting a global television audience of more than 100 million people, along with more than a billion social media views and engagements.
No mere exhibition game generates that sort of hoopla. All-Star games don’t count — except that the N.B.A. can rightfully say they do.
Like everything else in the league (and the world) these days, it’s complicated — and often inherently risky over the past year. Few understand that better than Silver, who is back in New York now for what could be another nervy week as the 400-plus players who were not in Atlanta gradually return to their teams. Coming out of a break is when the N.B.A. has typically had a surge in positive Covid-19 cases.
It likewise figures to be a week filled with somber reflection given Thursday’s looming one-year anniversary of the N.B.A.’s shutdown in response to the coronavirus outbreak. I interviewed Silver recently for a one-year-later project that ran in Monday’s editions of The New York Times, which featured Silver sharing some of his thinking and takeaways from March 11, 2020.
“When I made that decision that night to shut down, I thought of it more as a hiatus, because it was a realization that however long we’re shut down, we need to put in place a whole new set of protocols to deal with this emerging virus,” Silver said in last month’s interview. “It wasn’t so much that, all right, the world has stopped.
“At that moment,” Silver said, “I did not have a sense that we would be having this conversation almost a year later and we still would not be back to business as usual.”
The 70th All-Star Game, however you felt about it, was the latest illustration of exactly that. It became such a divisive issue because business as usual has been replaced by pandemic life for longer than most of us ever imagined.
MLB All-Star Game Economic Impact
The Economic Impact of an All-Star Game on a Hosting City
The economic impact of an All-Star Game in a host city is based on data provided by Major League Baseball (MLB). Fans, baseball players, baseball teams, corporate sponsors, and national media often spend the week(end) at the host city and spur economic activity at surrounding restaurants, hotels, and other local businesses. Each economic impact estimate preserved below comes from annual MLB press releases. No independent studies were conducted by Baseball Almanac.
“When you think back to 1964 (All-Star Game in New York), people came here and left. That’s it, it’s over. Our events will start on Friday and go through Tuesday. Both the economic and sociological impact will be enormous. We’ll celebrate the history of baseball and the history of baseball in New York.” – Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig (Massey, Daniel. Crain’s New York Business: City predicts huge impact from baseball event. 16 May 2012. Source)
The estimated economic impact for Cincinnati, Ohio, host of the 2015 All-Star Game — according to Major League Baseball — was approximately $60 million. The Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau released the following economic impact report:
The All-Star Game economic impact estimates put out by the host cities for the these All-Star Game events (2002 through 2011) averaged $70.5 million. That number was boosted by the 2008 All-Star Game in New York, but the hosting city will most certainly benefit from the Midsummer Classic being hosted in their city.
An economic impact study by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, published on NYC. gov, estimated that the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field would generate $191.5 million in total economic impact. An estimated 176,239 people would travel to New York City for the game and related events, not including an estimated 80,000 New Yorkers who would take part in the event. Total television viewership was expected to be more than 30 million viewers worldwide.

Jeremy Lin: Adding NBA’s Hottest Story to All-Star Weekend a No-Brainer | Bleacher Report
Chris Chambers/Getty Images
The NBA (and really any professional sport) does a terrific job of maximizing the attention that its stars get to squeeze every last dollar out of their fans.
This year there has been no bigger star than the New York Knicks’ Jeremy Lin, and that means he has to be a part of next week’s All-Star Weekend festivities somehow.
According to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News, the NBA is thinking the exact same thing:
According to a source, the NBA is hoping to add Lin to its All-Star lineup by having him participate in the Haier Shooting Stars competition during All-Star Saturday night. The competition features one current NBA player, one current WNBA player and one TNT on-air talent and legend on each team.
Placing him in the actual All-Star game is a bit much, considering he only has five career starts. He doesn’t have the hops for the Slam Dunk Contest, but the Skills Challenge is perfectly fitted for his style of play. For now though, the Shooting Stars competition is what the league is targeting.
Chris Chambers/Getty Images
Lin may have only entered your consciousness a week ago or so, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t deserving. The past week has been one that the NBA hasn’t seen come around in a long time.
Not only has a player come out of nowhere to dominate in the biggest market in the league, but he is one of the more unique players to ever don that famous Jerry West logo.
Harvard educated and of Asian-American decent, Lin is as common as an alligator in New York City. His easy-going personality has translated extremely well to the fans and he’s beginning to receive a Tebow-like cult following. People can’t get enough.
His game-winning three-pointer on Monday night in the Knicks’ 90-87 win was something straight out of a movie script.
After being outplayed by Jose Calderon for the vast majority of the night while turning the ball over eight times, Lin never wavered in his confidence and ended up scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter to finish with 27 and 11 assists.
The entire country is paying attention…even the president, according to ESPN New York:
White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer told ESPN.com that President Barack Obama has been following Lin this past week and watched Lin hit the game-winning 3-point shot that beat the Raptors Tuesday night in Toronto.
The president discussed the shot with aides on Marine One earlier Wednesday on the way to Andrews Air Force Base, before flying to Milwaukee.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said Lin’s success is “just a great story, and the president was saying as much this morning.”
Every other team has been asked about “Linsanity” and he even caught the attention of Floyd Mayweather.
He is the biggest story in sports. What better way to give him the national spotlight than throwing him in the Skills Challenge?
Make it happen, David Stern.

New York. 2020
November – December
In 2020, New York had a splendid spring with such lush bloom, which the old-timers have never even remembered, and a very long and soft wonderful Indian summer. There was a feeling that nature wants to tell people something. However, the meaning of this message was incomprehensible.
Once in the very beginning of November we were walking in Central Park.We spent many hours there every day at that time. The central park seems to be not that big, four kilometers from north to south, from 60th to 110th streets, and less than a kilometer from west to east. But it is very hilly, multi-level, with a whole network of diverging paths, and no matter how many years you walk along it, you always risk getting lost somewhere
That day we went along our favorite route: diagonally from Western 100 to the hotel Plaza at Fifth Avenue and 60th Street. There, in an unbearably stuffy room overlooking Central Park, the final explanation of the heroes of The Great Gatsby takes place. There and around in general, a lot of things happen in the movies and in books.
And the first thing that comes to mind is the scene in front of the hotel building in the old chickflick “We Were Like This.” Where Barbra Streisand says to Robert Redford: “Hubble, your girlfriend is lovely!” – and then, more than a quarter of a century later, in “Sex and the City”, Carrie Bradshaw repeats the same words to Mr. Big at this very place. And he looks at her very stupidly, not understanding. For tour guides taking fat, middle-aged, enthusiastic excursionists from the Midwest to the places of military glory of Carrie and her friends, this was the final point of the excursion. Before the epidemic.
Almost in the very southeastern corner of the park, we climbed a huge rock. It offered a special view of the idyllic pond, which is called the Pond, of the humpbacked Gapstow bridge, and of the new and unfinished (epidemic) needles of two tiny skyscrapers south of the park.On this day, the light was somehow unusually soft and gentle. And it seemed that the skyscrapers were slightly leaning towards each other, and at all did not stick out into the sky arrogantly and proudly, as they are supposed to be for skyscrapers.
And we didn’t even tell each other, but just at the same time thought that it seems that we never loved New York the way we did at this moment. And at the same time we turned away from each other, because we knew that we both now had wet eyes, and it was terribly embarrassing.
On Saturday 7 November, Central Park was the epicenter of the Biden celebration. The elections took place on Tuesday. On Tuesday night, everyone thought Trump was winning. But at that time, only a part of the votes of those who came directly to the elections were counted. On Wednesday, when those who voted in advance by mail began to be counted, the situation began to change, and on Thursday it was already clear that Biden was winning. But the official announcement was made only on Saturday.
It was a warm, sunny, calm day. We did not remember that there were so many people in the park since the most dockyard times. All the lawns are covered with blankets filled with food and wine bottles. People have a very festive look, and some even lay on their blankets without masks. All around was relaxed and complacent.
Pietrangelo’s Star Guide to St. Louis
Alex Pietrangelo has called St. Louis home for over 10 years. The defender has played 737 appearances for the St. Louis Blues in 12 seasons since the club’s No. 4 pick in 2008. Last year, the Blues captain lifted the Stanley Cup, which the team won for the first time since joining the NHL in the 1967-68 season.
In the 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Game at the Enterprise Center, he will play for the Central Division with four other Blues representatives: Coach Craig Beruby, goalkeeper Jordan Binnington and strikers Ryan O’Reilly and David Perron. “NHL Master Show 2020”, presented by New Amsterdam Vodka, will take place on Friday (Saturday, 02:00 GMT). The “All-Star Game” will take place on Saturday (Sunday, 3:00 Moscow time).
We asked a thirty-year-old hockey player for recommendations on where to eat and where to go for a tourist in St. Louis.
You just have to see the arch. I know it’s obvious, but it’s really cool to climb it and see from the inside. I didn’t think about it very much until I got there myself and examined everything about 10 years ago.
When you get there, it seems much more than you expect. Its height is 630 feet. It is the tallest man-made monument in the United States. It rises above the city center and the Mississippi River.
The city has done a good job throughout the area. They reinvented it, spent a lot of time and money making it a pleasure to come to this place. There is the Museum of American History, which tells about the role of St. Louis in the expansion to the west. Of course, there is an exhibition dedicated to creating an arch.
A must see Busch Stadium. Everyone knows about the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and what it means to the city. They won 13 World Series and now has Ballpark Village, a neighborhood of dining and entertainment.
The Cardinals work very hard to make the area special. When there is no baseball there, they show our matches. And during our matches there are always spectators there.
When my wife Jane and I have guests, especially in the summer, we always try to get out there. I think I ate at different restaurants every time I got there. There s fun. This is a great place, especially on weekends.
Jane and I now have 18 month old triplets – Oliver, Theo and Evelyn. And life has become somewhat less carefree.
We recently went to celebrate a birthday at the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station. My back still hurts from chasing children. They love it.
[See also: Panarina will not be at the All-Star Game]
If you have kids, the aquarium is great. They have all kinds of fish. They have sharks. They have a train. They have a water table that my kids played on for about 40 minutes. That is, it is quite interactive, there you can not only walk and look around. They even have a rare blue lobster called Lord Stanley.
I will definitely return there, believe me. We try to find different ways to keep the kids busy.
Since I got here, Union Station has changed a lot. The historic station has just undergone a $ 187 million renovation. It also features the Wheel of St. Louis, a new 200-foot high observation wheel that illuminates at night. There is also a carousel, mini golf and a small rope park.
This is where the NHL fan zone will be located from Thursday to Saturday. It will be possible to take pictures with the Stanley Cup, visit the Hall of Fame exhibition dedicated to the history of the Blues, meet with players, play different games, and so on.
[See also: Weber is ready to roll again]
If you have kids and are going to town, honestly, this is a great place. Children will definitely like it here.
When we go out to eat with three kids, we usually go to McDonald’s or Chick-Fil-A. They are real cars.
But when we get out to the center, we like to go to Hill’s. Charlie Gitto’s is also a great choice. I love homemade Italian restaurants. I have eaten there so many times over the years.
If you want a good steak, head to the Capital Grille or 801 Chophouse in Clayton.
My favorite is probably Olive and Oak in Webster Groves. It’s a pretty trendy place, but it has good cocktails and a varied menu. They update the menu all the time, so it’s different all the time. Nice burgers. If I want to go to dinner with my wife and friends, we go there.
You know, I’ve been living here for a long time. People in the Midwest are very nice. The locals are proud to host the Winter Classics, Stanley Cup Final, World Series.
We are generally very proud of the city. My wife is from here, so I know a lot of people. And, again, the people here are wonderful. If you need something, be sure that you will be taken care of.
Aleksey Zhitnik: “The All-Star Game is better to be held in Moscow than in St. Louis”
About the upcoming stellar weekend in the KHL and NHL – from New York, for Russia-Hockey.ru – Olympic champion, veteran defender 15 NHL seasons
OVECHKIN MAY ALLOW YOURSELF NOT TO INVENT ANYTHING
– In the KHL, before the All-Star Game, we are saddened by the refusals of some masters, as well as by not entirely clear substitutions. What about the NHL?
– Same. The captain of “Washington” Alexander Ovechkin misses a stellar weekend for the second year in a row, and he did not come up with any injuries, but simply said that he did not find motivation.
Ovechkin, with his superstar status, can afford it, but some other stars are more diplomatic, find injuries, and so on.
FOR GRETZKY, HALLA AND CO MATCHES OF STARS WERE A BIG PARTY
– How to explain such a cool attitude towards the All-Star Games in the NHL?
– To be honest, it’s a mystery to me.In my time, there were no refusals. The same “Uncle Vanya” Gretzky took part in such events more than ten times – and each time he was a “party soldier”.
If you dig deeper, you must admit that the qualitative composition of NHL stars has changed dramatically over the decades. In the early nineties, 90 percent of the participants were North Americans – with their special culture of perception of the NHL, with their own humor and traditions. Veterans of the level of Gretzky, Jeremy Renick or Brett Hull knew each other very well, loved to communicate, to play a trick on each other – and they perceived a stellar weekend as an opportunity for mental relaxation and a big party.
It’s different today. There are a lot of Europeans and young people in the league, the atmosphere has changed, the old party spirit, I suspect, has disappeared. Probably, the same Ovechkin, who still found the NHL elite at the beginning of the century, feels it – hence all the absences.
AT OUR TIME THE TRIP TO THE MATCH OF STARS WAS A BUSINESS
– The captain of “Washington” because of his decision will be disqualified for one game, and for the pass he chose a match after a stellar break. Was there such a clause in the collective agreement between the trade union and the league in your time?
– Yes, there was such a paragraph in the agreement, but, I repeat, it was not applied in practice, there were no volunteers. First, it would result in a loss of 1/82 of the annual salary – for one missed championship game. And secondly, participation in the All-Star Games guaranteed the player the best terms of the new contract, in fact, such a trip was good business. Now it seems different.
– Should the KHL, following the example of the NHL, disqualify refuseniks?
– It is up to the League to negotiate with the trade union, negotiate whether we are fined for failure to appear or not.Judging by the fact that there are no fines, it means that nothing has been written on this topic in the collective agreement in the KHL. In general, I do not see any good or bad in such refusals – this is a player’s personal business.
IN NEW YORK NHL PEOPLE WOULD FLY WITH HURRAY
– In Russia, many grumble that the choice of Moscow as the capital of the All-Star Game is not entirely correct, they say, Muscovites are spoiled by spectacles. Support the grumblers?
– I look at this situation from the player’s perspective.I think that nine out of ten hockey players will choose the megalopolis as the capital of the All-Star Game – everyone needs big city lights, infrastructure, restaurants, communication. In this sense, it is better to spend a stellar weekend in Moscow, and not, for example, as a week later in the NHL – in St. Louis. In a good city, but one that doesn’t compare to New York, Los Angeles or Toronto.
By the way, I also explain the low interest of NHL players to the Match in St. Louis by the controversial choice of the city. I think people would fly to the same New York with a bang.
FORMAT “YOURS AGAINST ALIEN” IS INTERESTING FOR FANS
– Do you like the current format of stellar holidays – in particular, the matches of the national teams of the divisions?
– Personally, I was a little more impressed by the North America format against the rest of the world, that is, our own against the legionnaires. In my opinion, it would be possible to return it.
On the other hand, for the NHL, it is very important to promote not Europe or other parts of the world, but internal confrontations, advertising its divisions, its structure, and so on.This is the correct business approach, it led to the fact that a few years after the Olympics in Nagano, the Europe-America format was canceled.
Probably, in the same KHL, the story of “friends against others” would have aroused at least the fans. Let’s see how the All-Star Game will be held in Moscow, maybe there will be some changes.

90,000 Hurricane Henry derailed an ambitious New York City Central Park concert – Worldwide – Culture BPH

CNN has been promoting for weeks the grand all-star Saturday concert We Love New York: The Homecoming Concert , which was scheduled to be broadcast from Central Park in New York. The event was supposed to mark the opening of the city after the coronavirus lockdown.
Instead, performances by the biggest names of the evening, including Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and others, were canceled as rain and an eerie thunderstorm ahead of the approaching Hurricane Henry forced the concert organizers to interrupt and then end the show.
The New York Philharmonic Orchestra set the mood for the evening with a set of instrumental compositions inspired by Gotham.Andrea Bocelli and Jennifer Hudson managed to perform. However, when singer Barry Manilow sang his mossy 1978 hit Can’t Smile Without You on stage, the performance was interrupted. The skies opened, rain, thunder and lightning ended what was announced as an epic event.
The downpour quickly cleared the public from the Great Lawn of Central Park. As if Mother Nature had announced that it was too early to celebrate the victory over covid amid the rise in the number of cases due to the Delta strain.
Look how it turned out. And when New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a star-studded concert last month, produced by music industry legend Clive Davis and concert business giant Live Nation, things seemed to be taking a much more positive direction. However, a significant increase in infections over the past month has shown the ambiguity of the action.
The scenario was the worst imaginable. Wet and disappointed concertgoers flooded the subway, many of them without masks. And some are also tipsy.
