Jonas Vaitkus: The theater should be like a vaccine, like an injection

During the rehearsals of the play, the Vilnius Old Theater talked with director J. Vaitkus about the play, the motives for choosing, the changing audience and the beast that lurks in each of us, and about how to defeat this beast.

– Why Florian Zeller’s “Father”? Old age, Alzheimer’s disease, memory atrophy, turning into a vegetable… Old age makes a person an outcast, but at the same time returns him to childhood, to that sandbox from which he once came out… What is your attitude towards old age in general and to yourself – to an aging person, and what determined your directorial choice?

– Everyone has to deal with this, it’s inevitable. And with himself – aging. It is good to be aware of old age, to understand that the body is weakening and your possibilities are already limited. When you see yourself from the outside, then everything is different. It is very important that a person jumps over this barrier of inability. Life itself makes you think about old age – people around you are dying, everything happens very organically. It causes fear, and in order to overcome this fear, you start thinking about old age.

The play touches on the idea of creativity, which shows a completely different world, even for a person with Alzheimer’s disease. It brings you closer to what was missed, ignored, dreamed about, albeit unconsciously. The play has a clear storyline. The daughter of the protagonist who died in the accident is an artist, internally free. This girl constantly appears in Andre’s life. Maybe – as a kind of reproach, an example of ideal communication. The play focuses on the relationship between father and daughter.

There are people who have never even thought that they can draw, listen to music, read poetry and perceive their life and work as creativity. In the case described in the play, if it were not for the “senile eclipse” that happened to Andre, the bright side would never have manifested. This only proves that every person has a natural sense of beauty, and the need to give any work a playful creative touch. I emphasize – any. This need gives meaning to old age and even sickness.

– However, along with old age, you are more attracted to universals, human nature, demons, beasts that begin to take over as the human mind and body ages, or at least the high probability of this … Am I mistaken?

– This theme is also relevant in the play: how a person is created, what he encounters. And he has all the instincts, including that wild cannibalism, atrocity. An important process of acquiring consciousness, according to Vidunas, is the path of becoming a Human. When a person begins to realize himself, he can control himself, pacify himself. Because there is a point in taming that beast – you live in society, you have a family, children. A great responsibility falls on the people around the maturing person. Personally, it seems to me that I spent little time with my children, I relied too much on school, the street, the yard … This is not good, you need to show the direction, but the connection between mother, father, children, sisters, brothers, grandparents and other relatives should be more durable. The farther, the less we appreciate the human vertical, we don’t try to get to the bottom of natural things, but plunge into the world of “scale”: into a world of pleasure in which you can just laugh, into a world without obligations with its desire to live, just live … If If you are honest with yourself, then you will definitely reflect on the mistakes you have made. But if you do them maliciously, following the logic, this is already a crime. A person grows only by making mistakes and analyzing himself: through self-flagellation, self-criticism and constant work on himself. If you are not afraid of this, then you can move on. Life has not been and will not be exceptionally beautiful, it is an illusion. And if you deny your nature, an atavistic animal in yourself, then close your eyes – do you see it? .. On the other hand, this animal is a kind of driving machine that makes you experience the greatest shame, feelings, self-flagellation.

– At present, there is a noticeable increase in the incidence of autism, Alzheimer’s disease. .. I think we can also talk here about cultural, historical, emotional memory… How would you react to the desire of politicians and the public to clean up the historical consciousness and public space , to replace one monument with another?..

– Why erect these idols at all, and why have there been so many of them? If, for example, they praise me a lot, then I only feel shame, I don’t know why I should be praised. This also applies to various commemorative plaques, awards, and medals. I want to resist the pressure of the masses. All these decisions are made collectively, one person cannot decide who to honor and who not, which of the monuments to demolish. There is a collective psychosis here, the problem lies in the creation of idols. But still people need authority. Most likely, this comes from the past: a father, a priest, some strong person, both mentally and physically. And it makes an impression. But how to educate a person so that he calmly looks at this social gradation? I don’t know. It’s probably impossible. This gradation exists everywhere – from kindergarten to the club of pensioners.

– Father, ruler, despot… Strindberg’s “Father”, “King Lear”, etc. The theme of father, power, of course, is not accidental in your repertoire. Old age, it seems to me, destroys the ego, which was cultivated in the struggle for power, authority, recognition and respect … In other words, vanity of vanities. Have you, as a person and a director who has come a long way, already figured out some of this for yourself? Who can still control this inner beast, curb it?

– I want to finish the work that was once started, but destroyed by good ministers, theater directors and actors – the Karamazov brothers… .N.). I don’t like unfinished works, especially since this is a continuation of the father’s theme… And it is perhaps the most important at the present time… I have always been impressed by a person who is able to master some skills and through them manage others, influence them . Watching the fruits of his activities, you understand that you will never be able to do this. Let’s say a person carves wood, he creates something incredible very quickly, and you understand that this cannot be learned. It can be a talent for languages, a verbal ability to bring people together, make discoveries, play a musical instrument well. He has a secret that I don’t know. It always drove me crazy. This does not mean that due to these abilities a person should be exalted. I am interested in the principle of management itself. This also applies to tyrants. Why was this particular person given this opportunity?

– There is a scene in the documentary “About Jonas” (film about Jonas Vaitkus, directed by Jokubas Vilius Turas – approx. G.N.): you are cleaning your black shoes and when you put on your shoes, you can see your holey sock… I read it as a metaphor. For me, this is the most organic scene in the film. What is the attitude of Jonas Vaitkus with black shoes and a holey sock?

– You can’t hide yourself. The hole still appears. If it was filmed and framed, they probably thought it belonged to me. I did not interfere with the editing of the film and did not turn to the director with any wishes. If you’re interested in learning about metaphors and their meanings, ask him himself. I would also be interested in hearing. By the way, another metaphor “sounds” in the film – snoring, because of which both I and my loved ones suffer. For the sake of peace of mind, I had an operation, unfortunately, the snoring became even more pronounced. Earlier, during sleep, for a minute or two, I even stopped breathing – I have good lungs. And then, as if he had been under water for a long time, he inhaled again. Like an explosion. I myself found the answer for myself, why this happens – this is psychosomatics …

– If not theater, then what?

– I have always loved the land, agriculture, forestry, plowing, bees. I would probably become a farmer, a beekeeper. When there are bees, there is an aura around. And they work very harmoniously…

– Now they say that the theater is going through a kind of crisis. Do you agree with this? How do you feel in today’s theatrical landscape?

– The theater is directionless, lost because all important derivatives have been destroyed. As well as village communities. The interests of people are so different that the theater cannot understand what exactly people need. Although it becomes clear that the theater should make people laugh, allow them to relax, should not make them think … But, in my opinion, the theater should be like a vaccine, like an injection, it should awaken feelings, even make them sick, ask themselves Is this beast inside you… When the viewer watches “Caligula”, “Richard III”, he must recognize them in himself, see what all this leads to. Watching a performance is like being overwhelmed. Fever, smallpox … There is very little theater like this now. Provocative, responsible, rude, even cruel, not afraid to take on dangerous topics. Now everything is in the hands of politicians, so there is no such theater. They impose a repertoire, explain what and how to do, etc. And everyone, confused, wants to please. Why you need to please, I do not understand. It’s a very strange audience right now. Previously, people came to the theater to communicate, argue, and reflect. If you take the ancient Greek theater, then there is no indulgence at all.

– Do you mean that the viewer is less educated, less understanding?

– I think so. He understands in his own way. The theater is like a jester… But it can have a very strong influence, restore what is fading. It definitely works. I say this from my own experience.

– Perhaps you know the answer to the question why, about 10-15 years ago, the audience, after both bad and good performances, began to stand up and applaud. When it is needed and not needed … What happened?

– Pretenders have become very polite. This is protective armor. And… get up and clap, clap. And try not to clap while sitting among them… People are at a loss, they don’t know how to evaluate the performance. If while watching the production they felt shame or cried, while others did not? .. In order not to stand out, they clap. Or they quietly leave so as not to participate in these bows. These bows should not exist at all. And for what to be grateful? For experienced shame? And that politeness here is like “cheese”. People are afraid to be themselves.

– The premiere of the play “Papa” will take place exactly one year after the start of the war in Ukraine. If you look at the whole war from the outside, from the point of view of the director…

– I always feel uneasy when such events, injuries occur, and most people live as if nothing had happened… There are people who feel, restrain themselves in self-expression, joy. And here’s another one of those unanswered questions – why? All the same, a person gives birth, lives like an immortal, although he buries someone all the time. An interesting phenomenon. survival instinct? And why it is necessary to survive – I do not know. Nature? When I die, I’ll have to think about it.

– What would be the first thing you would do if you were given, say, absolute power?

– I only know that a person must have certain taboos, one must be self-critical and follow professional ethics. If it is not there, then he cannot communicate with other people, he is irresponsible. You can’t change the world, but you can set a certain tone.

– What brings you pleasure, satisfaction?

– A good book… I am pleased to be alone, to be by the water, to see how life flows around, to feel that you are still here. Get in touch with the world of the dead, who send you certain signs. It supports, gives meaning. If I feel a commonality with a person who died 200 years ago, I understand him, then I don’t really need the living ones.
