Holly Black – biography of the author, list of books
American writer Holly Black (née Rigenbach) was born on January 20, 1971 in New Jersey. Growing up in a house full of books and surrounded by mysterious stories about fairytale creatures that her mother told her and her sister, Holly began writing poetry, short stories and plays during her school years. Her early writings also included the fantasy novel Knights of the Silver Sun.
After leaving school, she, along with her friend and future husband Theo Black, went to New Jersey, where she entered college. Graduated from the College of New Jersey with a bachelor’s degree in English literature at 1994, Holly decided to get a second profession and began studying library science at the school at Rugers State University, working part-time as an editor in medical journals in her spare time. In 1999, Holly married her high school friend Black, who by then had gained fame as an illustrator and web designer. She has featured periodically in role-playing game magazine 8d, and in 2002 New York’s Simon & Schuster published her first fantasy novel, Enchanted (originally titled Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale), which received favorable reviews from critics and was included in the American Library Association’s list of recommended reading for teenagers. In the same fantasy world, inhabited by fabulous fairy creatures and located next to the real world, the action of the novels “Valiant” (“Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie”, 2005) and “Resolute” (“Ironside: A Modern Faery’s Tale” , 2007).
The Courageous was awarded the Andre Norton Award for Achievement in Young Adult Literature and was a finalist at the Mythopoeic Awards. Shortly after her successful debut, Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, whom she met while working at 8d magazine, began a series of fantasy novels for children called Spiderwick. Chronicles. In 2003, the first three books of the series were published at once – “The Mysterious Find”, “The Clairvoyant Stone” and “Aunt Lucinda’s Secret”. They were followed by The Iron Tree (2004) and The Wrath of Mulgarath (2005), which topped the New York Times bestseller list. They subsequently released three accompanying books to the series, which provided additional information and talked about the fantastic creatures that inhabit the world they invented: Arthur Spiderwick’s Guide to the Fantasy World Around You, Arthur Spiderwick’s Notebook for Fantastic Observations (both – 2005), Feeding and Caring for Elves (2006) and Songs of Nixie: Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles (2007).
